@jcolebrand Thank you. I'll take a look.
Also, finally caved - downloading Portal 2

is there a reason I can't language hint the xml portion of my answer to this question:
1
Q: How do I add an attachment to a response payload in Spring-WS?

Mark ElliotI'm building a Web Services server that's designed to share content. I'd like to serve the content through a SOAP response containing an attachment. Right now, I'm using Spring WS to handle requests and serve responses. My service resembles something like this: @Endpoint public class Service{ ...

@MarkElliot You were missing a newline between the hint and the code

ah wow
that's not intuitive
thanks!

Sure thing.

That's generally what we're here for, when Tim doesn't beat everyone to the punch

1:58 AM
@jcolebrand Huh. That's interesting. O_o For some reason I thought the thumbnail was a cheese-filled pretzel, though. I should probably eat.

oh, haha. Yes, you probably should. For that matter I should go home and eat too

I also need to buy some beer so I can get proper use from this stein.

That sounds like a wonderful plan. I should do that too. I don't foresee it in the near future tho.

2:14 AM
@TimStone Heh, I can see that.

Ooooh, a shiny new generalist badge. (:

Hi, @RebeccaChernoff - long time no see.
So, you're now part of the team that is responsible for that "Hey, you use Apple.SE, have some swag" email, huh?

@RebeccaChernoff Meta generalist. :o Nice.
Argh Jin, making me have to do more work.
WTMF?

3:42 AM
o:

Gosh. Chapter 3 is neauseating.

@RebeccaChernoff Indeed. ):<

I was trying to fix this issue, but both Firefox and Chrome have totally screwed me with their incorrect behaviour.
They both set document.styleSheets[0].cssRules to null, I guess because of all the nasty browser hacks in the newer SE sites' CSS.
That's definitely not the spec'ed behaviour though.
Of course, if the CSS wasn't .post-menu > a to begin with..
Hmm, no, it's broken on SO too.
Apparently it's taking offense to the CDN.

4:00 AM
how is it I have neither cartoon network NOR the history channel (I know, what a combination)
for point of reference I should have those, I have them every other day
Mythbusters it is then

Huh, that is odd.
Yeah, so apparently we've decided that CSS is subject to cross-domain security restrictions now too. Good job, browser developers. claps

huh what who?
are you serious?

Yeah
I can't access .cssRules from a stylesheet loaded from a different origin, because somehow that would be a security hole.
reverts script changes and sighs

I really don't get if you are serious

4:13 AM
How is that even possible?

mornin'

@TimStone thank I'll take a look!

Giving that a SecSeverity label of Medium is just asinine.
@Sathya G'morning

@Sathya you on a little early or am I just creeping towards really late?

4:28 AM
@jcolebrand the latter
@TimStone Sounds like big headache, going by the tracker entry

Okay, now looking for a coop player for Portal 2.
:-D
I suppose I'll look in the Bridge.

@Moshe As long as I won't regret it, I suppose I can play co-op with you :P
adds another bug to the to-do list
@JeffAtwood By the way, do you have a link for whichever headset you were referring to in the podcast the other day? I'm in the market for a new one, and am open to recommendation.

Today is my Birthday :)

Happy birthday to you, then. :)

Thank You @TimStone

4:40 AM
Well Happy Birthday @Manjot

@jcolebrand Thank you :)

4:50 AM
@tim Thanks. How would we work that out with the auto system? I suppose I need to add you as a friend, yes?

These are good questions, I actually have yet to play coop :)

Happy birthday, @Manjot

Huh, is the iOS browser Safari Mobile or Mobile Safari?

Safari Mobile, officially
.

SO uses the tag , shouldn't it be reversed?

4:51 AM
Yes it should be.
Good catch.
@Tim what is your username? It randomly picks unless you're on my list.

darktalisman

Ok. See you.

@Moshe Thank you

Launching portal 2.
@tim server just booted me.

Yeah

5:04 AM
Yet again.
Once more and then I'm off to bed, okay?
Actually, please try inviting me this time.

One sec, I got stuck in the loading screen.

Ok.

@Manjot birthday wishes

@Sathya Thank you :)

did you read those links?
WTF???
People give you links on your question to help you out

Even I read.

so if he keeps up I just won't help him
the guys on the question asked him the same thing I'm asking him right now

Heh. :D

5:18 AM
@jcolebrand: I have read @Shog9's letter. It was in my inbox as he marked me

@TimStone just got kicked again. Apparently Steam only likes people with uber fast connections. Well will have to try again some time.
Thanks for trying. It was fun.

Sure thing

@genesis ok. But you were gone when he sent it.

It's all JCO's fault. Let's just agree on that and move on.

And now, bed. :-) Tschuss.

5:19 AM
@jcolebrand that's true

G'night
@Shog9 You and your stating the obvious.

Just next example @jcolebrand : are duplicate accounts allowed?

@TimStone Everyone needs a vice! Liquor and smokes just aren't doing it for me.

@genesis they are preferred not

@genesis If you have to ask, no.

5:21 AM
But it's not a crime. Thanks

Only if you use them to inflate your own rep or crush your enemies. Otherwise, meh.

Okay, thanks for ans :)

Then it becomes a Class A felony

Just ordered a half-gallon of Grade B maple syrup off Amazon. How great is Amazon? I mean, they were sorta amusing back when they sold books, but syrup by mail?!

You can even schedule recurring deliveries of food from Amazon.

@TimStone It is at this point that many of this room's occupants realize that they may never have to leave their house ever again

@TimStone I saw that. And then I thought, "this is how you end up being found dead in a pool of syrup".

Q: C++ - local variable can be accessed outside its scope?!

AvrahamshukI have the following code: int * foo() { int a = 5; return &a; } void main() { int* p = foo(); cout << *p; *p = 8; cout << *p; } And the code is just running with no runtime exceptions! The output was 5 8 How can it be? Isn't the memory of a local var...

@RebeccaChernoff Hm, perhaps it's time to freeze the Maths THC?

I don't know if my search-fu is weak, but I can't seem to find any reference to its official name. Apple just calls it Safari: apple.com/iphone/features/safari.html

status-unsupported

6:33 AM
@YiJiang They tried to throw me off the trial with this
In this article they indirectly call it Mobile Safari, and refer to it as Safari on iPhone.

I've only ever heard it called Mobile Safari or Safari Mobile (normally the prior)

Whatever then. Huh, I've always thought that they had a different name for the mobile browser.
Then again Microsoft also calls their mobile browser IE.

I think they want to pretend that the mobile browser is just as good as the desktop version, for varying definitions of good.
Man, this EBS snapshot is taking forever.
Hmm, I was going to use my shiny new mug, but I've just remembered that I'm out of half and half. -1 to me.

That is great style :)

@jcolebrand crikey. words fail me.

@TimStone out of half and half? What does that mean?

A: Is there a webapp to create ASCII art tables?

SensefulNow there is: Format Text as Table. I've been meaning to create this utility for a while. I was actually inspired by MySQL's command line utility and the lack of tables on SO. So thanks for reminding me to make it. And thanks to @Lipis for the Unicode char idea. Here's an example of the output...

Google Earth would be so boring without the "Buildings" layer.

Is this real or just an image

@Manjot The building with the black face should be a dead giveaway

10:53 AM
I once modelled my old old old workplace and submitted it, it got refused as it wa too detailed :( I kinda went over the top as I was learning SketchUp for the first time.

Fun fact - bookmarks in Google Earth still work if you change planets - you can see what's on the Moon, or on Mars, at the same latitude/longitude as your home.

dead giveaway means?

I for one end up in a place with "-3.8km" elevation in Mars. Whatever that means, there's no sea level in Mars.

which is this place btw

@badpssockpuppet I was going to say, the moon is smaller than the earth so the long + lat of some places won't exist on the moon.
I'm going to say Italy or Spain?

11:00 AM
It's no secret I live in Italy.

Spain might be

If you're talking about the screenshot there's latitude and longitude at the bottom to the hundredth of second.
Surely that should be enough to determine it's Venice?

but that would have required effort.
(I guessed by the language in the bottom left)

Another sip of scotch...
Today is my bday as all you know
Its fun...I m lovin it :)

@balpha The post I just posted above

The Stack Exchange Performance-o-Meter is showing up on the top left hand corner of data.stackexchange.com. Is this normal?

yes, that's the demo site
Logged on users at http://data.stackexchange.com can have a sneak peak at the #stackoverflow profiler http://goo.gl/ZBrrv #opensource

After all it's the open source profiler running on the open source data explorer
It makes sense
Although the profiler isn't always that useful.

@Shog9 How old-fashioned. What if a woman brings back teh codez?

@tombull89 that it is morning time
@PopularDemand then he would procreate and have a daughter as a fulfillment of the code. However, after at least 16 years of waiting she may have grown bored by then and moved on...

@PopularDemand Surely you've heard - there are no women on The Internet. Therefore, although a woman might indeed claim the prize, we wouldn't encounter the contestants on SO.

@Damodar This is hyperbole of the best kind
Hyperbole ( ; Greek: , 'exaggeration') is the use of exaggeration as a rhetorical device or figure of speech. It may be used to evoke strong feelings or to create a strong impression, but is not meant to be taken literally. Hyperboles are exaggerations to create emphasis or effect. As a literary device, hyperbole is often used in poetry, and is frequently encountered in casual speech. An example of hyperbole is: "The bag weighed a ton." Hyperbole helps to make the point that the bag was very heavy, although it is not probable that it would actually weigh a ton. In rhetoric, some opposi...

@jcolebrand Nope.

1 hour later…
5:47 PM
Apparently the answer to my question: "Is this something that we users of the Stack Exchange network can work together on?" is "No. No we can't."

@jcolebrand is that regarding your Wikipedia suggestion? I have a long, rambling answer to that which I may or may not find time to post any time soon... But the gist is, we don't like list questions because they're useless - exporting our expertise in generating useless content to Wikipedia isn't "making The Internet better".

@Shog9 yes, that one :p
@Shog9 how is "asking domain experts to contribute knowledge that not everyone has to a central repository that is focused on accumulating that information" not "making the Internet better"?

Questions that are useful and also happen to produce lists tend to be ok on SE. It's the general "I'm bored and want to see a list of things I have a passing interest in" questions that kill.

People don't need to ask the questions that generate lists, but there are some things that need a list (such as which languages offer support for a given feature) and some lists that don't need to exist (order of laptops that you should consider purchasing if you have a budget of X and a deadline of Y)
@Shog9 and in this case, a useful question got killed

@jcolebrand Did you see my answer to the question that prompted your suggestion?

5:57 PM
@Shog9 I vaguely recall it, lemme go redig
redug. And?

If I want to do some maths, I'm gonna pick a language that I know and figure out how to make it do maths. OR, I'll go look for a language well-suited for the type of problem I want to solve.

I agree, and the fact that he asked a mod to burninate it was unforgiveable to me. He should have left it alive
However, I saw virtue in what he wanted so wanted to have a discussion on meta around it ;)

I'm NOT gonna go find lists of all the languages that happen to support the features I need, perform an intersection on them, and pick one that falls into the result set.
And I'm definitely not going to impose arbitrary restrictions on how the features are implemented.

And for this particular case, I agree, but I can't rule that out for all future requests. Also, his restriction on libraries was entirely dumb.

"Hey, I need to do some disk IO - but Java and C++ only provide that via library support. BASIC it is!"
@jcolebrand So don't rule it out then. There's no rule that states questions asking for solutions to real problems can't result in lists.

6:02 PM
@Shog9 yeah, but SO has adopted a mentality of "kill lists" and also, wikipedia is better suited in general to maintain lists

@jcolebrand Yes. If the "problem" you're looking to solve is, "I want a list of stuff", then SO hates on it.

but sometimes a list should exist and doesn't and if you don't know all the details about a problem then you certainly can't create the list yourself

SE actually works pretty well for doing up lists (but not maintaining them)... However, since they're not real questions, they tend to degrade pretty fast.
@jcolebrand Give me a concrete example.

but what if there was a way to accumulate those domain experts in one place and ask them for five minutes of help?

"How can I get the path for Program Files on Windows?" - there are probably half a dozen or more ways to do this, some better than others. So you get a list. And you pick an answer that works for you. Win.

6:05 PM
@Shog9 I can't do that right this second. I don't have any good examples that need lists that I'm looking for.

I gave you one.

I happen to be at that point where I know how to ask the questions to get the answers I need.
@Shog9 that's not really a WP style list tho

Now, you could ask that same question in a profoundly stupid way: "What are all the different ways of getting "C:\Program Files\" in Windows?"

that's a SuperUser list probably

@Shog9 I think there's a right answer to that (%PROGRAMFILES%)

6:06 PM
@MichaelMrozek do you want 64 bit support?

@MichaelMrozek That's wrong in some contexts. (^^^what JCO said)

Doesn't it account for that? Isn't that kind of the whole point?

@MichaelMrozek That depends entirely on who you are and what you intend to do with it.

...it gives you a different answer depending on what you intend to do with it?

If you're a 64bit process intending to find a 32-bit installation, or some other combination of those two, you're in for pain.

6:10 PM
Anyway, it's not like it matters; the point is I think there's a correct answer to that question, even though apparently I don't know what it is

yeah, 64 bit is in C:\Program Files and 32 bit is in C:\Program Files (x86)

We're getting sidetracked...

The real point is that the community seems to be of the opinion that enhancing Wikipedia does not benefit the stacks.
That's fine, I've opened my yap, I've gotten some answers ;)

My point is, if I were running Wikipedia, I would be less than enthused about the idea that some other site was going to send folks over to build up a list of their favorite text editors.

Well, I certainly have no idea what Wikipedia has to do with SO at all; it's like randomly trying to get a group of people to go to another website because they happen to be around
@Shog9 Forget that; if I'm on SO I'm less than enthused about the idea of it randomly badgering me to go to other sites

6:12 PM
And for useful questions, there's no good reason not to host the answers on SO
@MichaelMrozek reminding you. It's a reminder (nudges @JCO)

@Shog9 remember that time when we were reminding people needlessly?

@jcolebrand Nope.

@MichaelMrozek AnnaLear suggests you goto Quora
@Shog9 I'll remind you later.

@jcolebrand Ok. Only because AnnaLear suggested it though

@MichaelMrozek haha, I know right? :S
