Q: The two things about stackexchange

ashwinFirst thing, I see that stackoverflow has been remodled into number of other sites like superuser.com , serverfault.com, and lot, lot more. I think this stackoverflow design is excellent. The UI is awesome. But do we actually need so many sites. For example superuser , serverfault , unix, askubun...

and "adolfs" comment on this is a little...odd...meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/96017/…

2:26 PM
lol.. I enjoyed it.

Oh Great Jon! My Flag weight is a float number :D

@Mvy never mind your flag weight being a float, my hair is a bird.

I didn't get that one... what do he mean by this?

I've got no idea.

he's high?

2:32 PM
or he has actually got a bird nesting in his hair.
in The Comms Room on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 33 secs ago, by Chopper3
I like that comment - makes more sense that 20% of the questions we get on here

Flag weight should be a multiple of some transcendent number.

2:55 PM
Hum, I've earned a new badge on meta, welcome the :

Dear Meta User, you are brassing air. Grats.

@Mvy Stick a ! at the beginning of the line

oh for the image?
argh can't edit anymore
It used to be automatic, wasn't it?

Awesome, I love down-votes on my accepted and correct answers. stackoverflow.com/questions/6441665/…

@Mvy the URL doesn't have an image extension

Q: How can I convert this jQuery handler on pure Javascript cross-browser?

markzzzI have this jQuery handler : $('a[rel="entra_handler"]').hover( function() { $(this).children().fadeOut(200); }, function() { $(this).children().fadeIn(200); } ); and I'd like to convert it to pure Javascript, that works with every kind of browsers. Is it easy a...

You have to scratch your head at some questions...

Well, the answers already suck.
And... this is the top "related" question, which is even more dumb.

3:17 PM
lol, pure jQuery
@Shog9 word... they aren't even answers, unless his real question was "is it possible and easy?" in which case I think it's off-topic and have voted to close as too localized

@Fosco Closed, linked to this as a reference.

@Fosco does that mean you want one more? Bwahahahahaha

@Pekkasseriousaccount :) Please no!
@Shog9 Cool, relevant and well done.

You have no idea how much I enjoy being able to just close stuff that bugs me.

Haha! Not hard to imagine.

3:21 PM
voted as dupe with link, and posted a LMGTFY link just for fun...

SO is becoming so big, you can talk about any kind of question, and you can be fairly sure one has been asked during the past hour or so.
Fascinating.

Closed as a dup of another dumb question... "But I don't want to call a function!!"

Neil is such a rep whore, answering that question... lol.

I've seen exact duplicates being asked within the same five minutes from each other from completely (verifiably) different people

THE FIRST MAN TO GET ME AN ANSWER TO THIS QUESTION KEEPS HIS JOB... GO!

3:25 PM
Which question?
What do I do if I don't want to keep my current job?

your comment put this image in my head of some autocratic team leader sending his peons out into the wilds to search for treasure.
MY DAUGHTER'S HAND IN MARRIAGE TO THE MAN WHO CAN BRING BACK TEH CODEZ!

@Shog9 plz to send pics thx

(if his profile is right, Shog9 is 31)

That makes him fairly unlikely to have a daughter of legal age.
Is this an arranged marriage kind of thing then? Like, in 20 years...?
I'm not sure whether I'm comfortable with that to be honest.
I think I'll go look for someone else's codez.
I also liked PLZ SEND TEH L33T CODERZ as a meme for badly written job ads. From here

Arranged marriages are best when they involve disturbingly young brides. Anticipation always trumps reality.

3:48 PM
(y'know, that reads a lot more wrong than I intended it to...)

I figured you were filling in for @random since he never comes in here

@Shog9 Are you per chance, married?

He is. But it doesn't look arranged.

SOMEONE'S BEEN SPYING ON ME!

That would totally explain what he just said. Nothing more to see here, move along, move along
@Shog9 Nope, my henchmen are on vacation

4:02 PM
So hard to find reliable henchmen

@Shog9 there ought to be a web site.

It really is. They want BENEFITS and stuff like that, as in full access to a shrink ray isn't enough.

And stuff like "Global henchman day" .. meh
Wow, I actually didn't regret suggesting someone ask something on SO:

Q: Having trouble wrapping functions in the linux kernel

Corey HendersonI've written a LKM that implements Trusted Path Execution (TPE) into your kernel: https://github.com/cormander/tpe-lkm I run into an occasional kernel OOPS (describe at the end of this question) when I define WRAP_SYSCALLS to 1, and am at my wit's end trying to track it down. A little backgrou...

Cool.. it does look like he got a helpful answer.

4:17 PM
Is there an easy way to get to the rep recalc or do I just type it in by hand?

@jcolebrand /reputation and click the button at the bottom

@Fosco which requires typing in /reputation, yes?

@jcolebrand which is mind-numbingly easy, yes? :D

@Fosco yes, but clicking is brain-dead easy :p

I assumed when you said type it in, you meant the extra part the button adds, like &reprecalc=true or something.

4:24 PM
ahhh, gotcha

How exactly does one score 13 out of 12 on the Joel test, with only 10 checkmarks?

I just asked the careers devs precisely that question
My bet is that LOLcats give bonus points

Hm, it reads "10/12" to me

Mystery solved: It's a bug!

Those are the 2 extra credit questions on the Joel Test... Can you haz Cheeseburger? and Can someone set up us the bomb?
@balpha ok.. it was posted today... has it really been viewed 5,333 times already?

5:00 PM
Here I was, content with toast ....... then someone had to say cheeseburger.

Makes me think I should have a cheeseburger (with bacon!) for lunch

@TimPost Here I was, content with my cheeseburger... then someone had to remind me that I could be having it on a toasted bun.

I happen to have all the constituent parts in my fridge ready to go, fwiw

You people are brutal

@PopularDemand better is to toast the bun and immediately put on the cheese

5:01 PM
Im in ur chatroom.. messing wit ur appetites

I only have this to say:
bacon

I made bacon cookies earlier this week.

@TimPost WHAT?!
Were they any good? (is this a stupid question?)... is there a recipe online?

Yep, you wrap bacon around partially cooked (something), stick it in the oven on 400, wait for it to crisp, DRAIN THE FAT then eat.

5:04 PM
I made mine with shredded potatoes.

@TimPost ah ok.. i don't really consider that a cookie.. but, Nice!

@Fosco Well, if a cookie isn't defined by it's shape, what else is it? :) It can be savory you know.
I promise you, bacon cookies are much more wholesome than cookies you get from porn sites.

What is going on in this room today?

I assumed a cookie meant it was a baked sweet, involving a cookie dough of some sort. I pictured a chocolate chip cookie, minus the chocolate chips, with added bacon.

@PopularDemand apparently salivation

5:08 PM
Well, you can do them sweet
Apple filling , cinnamon and brown sugar

But, lean bacon is the best for that, and everyone knows that's not real bacon
You want the granny smith apples (sort of tart) if you do that, depending on your bacon.

I may attempt some sort of bacon cookie in the near future. The attempt may be scrapped mid-way due to eating all of the bacon.

You could throw in oatmeal for some crunch, too. I'm not done experimenting.
Today I deep fried Tang. That was awful, but the bacon cookies turned out well.

> "2002? That's not that long a..." looks at clock in lower-right corner "damn."

5:17 PM
Firefox 4, released 3 months ago, is now at End of Life, out of support, and no more patches. lol.

I'm going to attempt a bacon basket tomorrow morning, basically a small basket made out of bacon holding some scrambled eggs. That should stay with me longer than Firefox 4.

@TimPost photoblog it!

Bacon basket, nice.. I've seen a bacon weave pattern before...

@jcolebrand yeah if I manage to do it. I'm hoping for something I can top off with a whole breakfast.

@Fosco would you assemble before cooking?

5:20 PM
The handle is going to be the hard part.

There was a recipe online for the most incredible thing I've ever seen... it was pounds of bacon weaved in a quilt, filled with ground sausage, wrapped and folded up, then covered in BBQ sauce and grilled.

@Fosco I don't want to die soon

@jcolebrand Absolutely before. To attempt to weave bacon afterwards would be hilarious.
Let me see if I can find it...

sweet

It's pretty simple. Weave it in a bowl, put ANOTHER bowl on top of that, stick it in the freezer. Heat the deep fryer extra hot, blanch it in that. Now you have your shape

5:22 PM
Yes,.... bacon lovers check this out: bbqaddicts.com/blog/recipes/bacon-explosion

The hard part is the handle, as that means two strips of bacon that have to join.
A lot like lisp: E.g. ( )

I clicked, but closed it before it could load.. afraid of what mr baconpants might do on my work computer screen.

There is, in fact a podcast that covers bacon extensively.

> try placing a couple Bacon Explosion slices on a warm Pillsbury’s Grands Biscuit. You’ll reach pork Nirvana in no time flat!
my arteries are clogging just reading the article

reading is bad for my heart? TIL

5:26 PM
@Fosco I hate to break it to you bluntly, but Mr. Bacon Pants is your space dad.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

@Fosco Go toss some cars around, and behold the power of pork fat.
I think I have it well planned, tooth picks initially to hold it all together, syrup once it forms

mm... i want pictures after.

Just working on how to get the 'arch' in the handle without undercooking the bacon
It has to be pliable enough to bend, but not sag

sounds like a couple of well placed toothpicks will handle that as well

5:36 PM
@jcolebrand Maybe, but I'm hoping to reproduce this by just using a frying pan
Sure, I could make the best bacon basket ever for a photo op, but a video on how to do it would kill, err, help a lot more people.
I will put myself in the line of danger and test the tensile strength of lean vs regular bacon first.

What is going on in this room today?

@Fosco Ick invented a new virus and this happens to be Kent's room.

Sadly I don't get the references =\

@Fosco Real Genius

Ah.. haven't seen it.

5:43 PM
@Fosco It is worth watching.
(old), I think it was Val Kilmer's first real movie

Ok, I'll look into it, thanks.

(@balpha, @jcolebrand)

@TimStone sucks!

@TimStone Oh yeah, but can you do this?

What is it that I'm doing? :P

Oh nothing, just wondering how long it would take you to ask.

The Zombie Invasion has begun! notalwaysright.com/five-days-later/2904

@TimStone Why are you pinging me for that?

> I am now concerned about the quality of Stack Exchange writing implements. Were the tooltips written with either the Official SE Pen or the Official SE Sharpie? If not, why aren't you dogfooding? If so, will I experience similar issues with my writing when using your products? – Popular Demand jun 6 at 15:56
So basically for no particular reason.

@TimStone Ah, very good. I got some SE Sharpies myself. Love that they're clicky-tops.

Good job guys... now I'm going to browse the SE Store.

@TimStone I'll see your cups and raise you 10,000,000

5:53 PM
Touché. I only have 1,000,000 Unicorn Dollars

=\ $8 to ship $12.. guess i'll add more items..

I had more, I give them out to people who notice my T shirt and stop me asking for swag

@TimPost You're going to have to break those into smaller bills if you intend to survive DevDays.

I'm imagining @TimPost walking down the street with a monocle, top hat, and SO t-shirt, and some kid runs up to him and says "spare a unicorn bill, sir?", and he responds "of course my good boy!" and pulls out a wallet stuffed with unicorn bills

@PopularDemand It's unlikely that dev days will reach The Philippines. I'm working on seeing what interest there may be in a local version

5:57 PM
@TimStone The variant title got autocorrected in my mind for a long, horrible moment.

Order placed... woo!

@MichaelMrozek Impossible. SO never minted schillings

@badpssockpuppet same here

I do get stopped on a semi regular basis. Someone asked me if I was Joel Spolsky ...... now THAT was tempting.
There are a lot of users here who get a lot from SO, but feel intimidated when it comes to participating.

@TimPost If random people on the street in the Philippines know who Joel Spolsky is, I think I'm living in the wrong country.

6:01 PM
@PopularDemand not on the street, in the PC markets

@TimPost I don't think that's country-specific.

@PopularDemand I'll take pics the next time I go. Imagine a three floor warehouse with about 300 10x10 stalls on each floor, everyone selling memory, HD's, processors, etc

I meant feeling intimidated about SO participation. But that sounds cool too.

That describes SM City, North Edsa .. Wikipedia link coming (one sec)
SM City North Edsa is the largest mall in the Philippines, and the world’s third biggest in terms of leasable area (482,878 square meters). It is operated by SM Prime Holdings, a local holding company in the Philippines, the biggest retail and mall operator in Southeast Asia. Located at the intersection of North and Epifanio Delos Santos avenues in Quezon City, SM City North Edsa opened on November 25, 1985. The original concept offered a variety of tenants and flagship stores (i.e., department store, supermarket, bowling area, a foodcourt, and cinemas). The mall's redevelopment began wit...

anybody in here do hibernate on their java?

6:06 PM
Most, if not all of the "blue" building is PC vendors

@jcolebrand Yeah

does it generate the tables for you if they don't exist or do you have to create the DDL SQL for that?

You can tell it to, yeah

thanks

oh god.. hibernate, creator of the worst SQL ever, killer of database engines.. run while you still can!

Q: Need some modern best practices for database development

sangfroidSo, I'm starting a fresh new project with some new tools, and I wanted to get an idea of what some modern best practices are. In the past, when I've done DB work, it was always pretty ad-hoc. This time around, I want to do things the Right Way. FYI : I'm writing in Java, using Hibernate. I'm r...

@jcolebrand I am relieved it was not for personal consumption..

@Fosco indeed
I'm a sproc man myself

shrugs We don't have any (immediate) issues with Hibernate. We don't let it create our tables though.

Argg .. DIE! I just got a bug report from someone using a version of gcc sufficiently old enough to think -1 == 1 due to abs()
I wish modern cut offs were made into law
At least I asserted it.. sigh

Once again, I found something to post to Regulator HQ just moments before it would have been frozen (I imagine).

6:17 PM
That post got annihilated apparently.
Oh, no, just all questions on the site are now inaccessible.
> Hashtable insert failed. Load factor too high. The most common cause is multiple threads writing to the Hashtable simultaneously
tsk tsk
Quickly @RebeccaChernoff, resort to yelling!

@TimStone That's happened like 5 times now

Link?

Hmm?

6:44 PM
Windows XP haunts me. Running chkdsk yet another time in my life.
I don't even own a PC with XP on it.

me either... 3 machines all windows 7'd up

Windows ... tsss.

You guys are crazy, I've been happily browsing SO/MSO for the past half hour. (Well, not happily, some of these questions are terrible, but the site functions, is the point.)

You can browse it happily for more than 5 minutes?
In which tags?

@OctavianDamiean Refer to parenthetical statement.

7:03 PM
There's a file in my SVN repo that I foolishly deleted my local copy of at some point in the past. Now when I run an update, that file doesn't get pulled down. I'm guessing it's because there's some metadata file somewhere that recorded that I deleted it manually. How can I get it back without running a dummy commit?

The delete isn't still registered as a pending outgoing change?

Move to git :D

@TimStone I don't think so, but I don't know how to check to be sure. It's an automatically generated service stub. When it regenerates, it gets "new file not under version control" status. If I add it, it gets "versioned file that needs to be added to the repo" status. At no point can I do an update.

Stallman is going to visit our university, and then our LUG, this Friday.
Got any requests?

7:15 PM
Get a picture with him.

Ask him to end the GNU/Linux discussion.

@PopularDemand Oh, and you're sure it still exists in the repository?

@TimStone Yes, I can see it there in the web interface.

@badpssockpuppet I thought he didn't visit LUGs unless they called themselves GLUGs (seriously)

Are you serious serious?

7:17 PM
super serial?

That's what I heard; maybe it was a joke wherever I read it and I didn't realize

@OctavianDamiean Not a chance in hell, when our president wished Stallman happy birthday via email, he noticed our association is named "Politecnico Open unix Labs." He complained about "Open" and said it should've been called "Libre" instead.
I don't think he got a reply explaining that POLL ("Chicken") would be a good name for our association after all.

@PopularDemand Hmm. And if you update to head, it doesn't pull it down? If you're doing it from inside Eclipse, what's the command that it's using that gets printed to the console?

@MichaelMrozek Chat hates you.

7:18 PM
@badpssockpuppet Ah, thanks

update C:/ProjectName/modules/more/folders -r HEAD --force

work --dammit

Well if he is that anal about those things then he should gtfo and not leave his house ...

He's a man of strong opinions.
I guess.

Such a behavior pisses me off. Sorry for that outburst.

7:20 PM
@PopularDemand Hm..

I just hope he won't start singing "You are free, hacker"

@OctavianDamiean We had a fight on UL early on about somebody wanting to change Linux to GNU/Linux in a question

is that why edits have to be longer than 6 characters? :)

Did anybody end up writing a userscript that does just that? :P

He does have a sense of humor: "'In toto' is how Dorothy responded when the witch asked her where the magic sausage was." (source)

7:22 PM
@MichaelMrozek We had that very same fight over at Ask Ubuntu.
with the result that there is no solution for that issue.

Also "There was (or should have been) a travelling pair of exhibits about automata theory that was called the Turing Circus. (Two-ring, touring.)" (source)

I mean I told him that people just won't go for that naming scheme just because it is too much to type. No one will ever say Today I drove with my Daimler Benz/Ford/Focus to work.
meh whatever, I'm not going to start that discussion, yet again

7:37 PM
Stallman?
Mmm chkdsk and vanilla yogurt for lunch.

That was quick, Stack Exchange... my order has already shipped.

8:01 PM

@TimStone The files in question (there are two) are not listed in /.svn/entries.

8:25 PM
Anyone have O'Reilly book recommendations? I was thinking of picking up a couple of their books, and they're running a "buy two get one free" deal right now.

Well they have a couple of good Java books
They really have? That means I'm going to order my Python books then.

@OctavianDamiean "Buy two books direct from O'Reilly and get the third free by using code OPC10 in our shopping cart." -oreilly.com/oreilly/cs/b2g1f.html

nice
thanks for the tip
oh well it won't save me anything
the shipping costs for three books would be approximately 60$

anyone have a bead on how long FX3.6 is going to be supported?

by mozilla or by SE?

8:39 PM
Mozilla
I figure sites are just gonna support what they support :p
If only there were a website where I could ask questions and get authoritative answers regarding the use of desktop software ....

well, mozilla is going the google route now, so they've probably alreay forgotten that FF 3 ever existed ;)

@jcolebrand "for a short amount of time," according to Google.

and hope that everyone else did too

Q: How long will Firefox 3.6 be supported for those who choose not to upgrade?

jcolebrandHow long will Firefox 3.6 be supported for those who choose not to upgrade to versions 4 or later?

@balpha I figure that as well

That's only 3.6; 3.5 and 4 are already past EOL.

8:42 PM
hey @balpha, while you're here
How tricksy are ya'lls retags at the db end? Do you have a script or somesuch?

what do you mean?

I guess it's a dumb question :p I'm gonna flag the outstanding Q on the child meta for the site-mods to look at :p
@PopularDemand > You can accept an answer in 10 minutes

Hi all, what are you supposed to do when a number of people answer your question and spend lots of time on it, but are ultimately wrong?

@demongolem you're supposed to reword the question
because obviously you didn't make it clear what you wanted out of people

@demongolem one option is to politely but firmly tell them that they're wrong.

8:48 PM
Try re-reading this: tinyurl.com/so-hints

@demongolem Depends on why they're wrong. Is there a specific question you're thinking of?

Or as @jcolebrand says, re-word... Depending on who's to blame

I can give you a specific question, but ultimately there may be no legal answer
er I mean valid heheheh

@Pekkasseriousaccount everytime (every) that I've come across this it has been because the asker asked some hand-wavey question and didn't provide specifics and existing code and existing data.
@demongolem valid = legal unless legal means consult a lawyer ;)

@jcolebrand yeah, most of the time that's true. But there are occasions when answerers indeed read a question too quickly, and post dumb answers

8:50 PM
@Pekkasseriousaccount that's different. That doesn't seem to fit the mold of what has been pre-supposed in here already. Additionally, we're playing the same game, we're answering a hand wavey question.
I'm waiting on a link, and can see I'm gonna have to go digging
somebody doesn't have a linked account ... whynot ffs?
Greg you should really associate your accounts by putting the same openid on two of them

Hehehe, yes I emailed today to ask that same question, I did not do that on purpose

either that or you've gone and mangled up two different accounts

So the question in question is The link I am thinking about is stackoverflow.com/questions/6445561/…

Greg shall I ask someone with modpowers on meta to merge that for you?
@Shog9 be summoned if you may

yes great!

8:53 PM
demongolem, United States
108 2

What now?

@demongolem so what did they do wrong?
@Shog9 can you merge the user on the left and the user above?
see :657487 and :657484

I still see 21 at the top, do I have to logout, or change to my other openid?

@demongolem it takes time for the magic to transpire
Back to the question at hand.

Ok
There's only one user now.

8:55 PM
How/Why did they answer the problem incorrectly?
@Shog9 merci beaucoup. You are a gentleman and a scholar.
