12:12 AM
hey @GeorgeMarian if I send you two wmv can you watch them and give me +1 -1 feedback?
@The ~ 10MB is too large a file for emails? WTF?

12:36 AM
@drachenstern heh

eh?
ah, yeah
Okie people, I have succesfully finished the two tasks I wanted to get done today at the office. Now I need to goto the grocery store... uh, do that tonight or tomorrow?

@drachenstern Depends on how empty the fridge is.

I've always got soup. That's about it.

Tonight. Buy real stuff. Like ingredients to cook. Avoid all cans of chili.

I could dig some bread tho
@RebeccaChernoff :p

12:45 AM
@drachenstern I'm going to assume this is also from a can and go ahead and tell you it's been poisoned. |:
2

@RebeccaChernoff lmfao
I'm glad I'm the only one in the office today
So maybe some sausage and some noodles and a few tidbits from the veggie section up front and some sort of tomato sauce as a base and a little bruschetta or something ...
@RebeccaChernoff I would laugh my tush off if I ever came to your house and looked in your fridge and found a lot of boxed meals like ...
that would be hilarious.

you wouldn't find any!

lol, nice catch ;)
Ok, I'm off to go walk me mutt and figure out what I need from the store before I go

I just logged into my online banking and realized how broke I am... :(

@Jacob you're ... 15?
My lord, at 15 I barely had a checking account. That lasted for about a year.

12:51 AM
@drachenstern Your point?
@drachenstern I'm a really smart 15 year old :)

We'll be the judge of that... ;)

Full disclosure: I earned more in HS than most kids parents gave them. I also worked most summer's straight through. So I had cash too ;)
@Jacob perspective Jacob. I was a terribly precocious 15 year old as well ;)
Ah, that reminds me, I have a bit of a challenge for you.

@drachenstern I had to google that...

And there's at least 8 years of reason I give you this challenge. (aka one of my PhD buddies was struggling with this, aka this gives you a good head start on what PhD candidates are working on)

@drachenstern OH NOES... bring it on?

12:52 AM
@Jacob see the problem with saying you're a really smart 15 year old?

@drachenstern I remember the pronunciation of a word to its definition not always the spelling... I'm an hearing learning person.
@drachenstern Challenge? what does it relate to?

@Jacob doesn't really matter after a certain point. You should always recognize words from their spelling and pronunciation ... Ask the chaps over at EL&U
@Jacob it relates to networking ... hang on, I'm still typing it.
I want you to build a VM network,
* that is entirely self contained,
* that has one head node,
* that has at least three children nodes,
* that each child node has no VHD or similar "hard drive file" and
* that each node can be booted to a working shell and supports a full linux headless (meaning it doesn't have to support X but does need to support SSH) install.

The clients should be able to load their resources from the "master" node, and should be able to boot in parallel or in serial, depending on what you initiate from the master node.
That may seem like it's "too hard" (it's not, I can do it in a couple weeks of dedicated work, from start to finish) and it may seem pointless (it's not, this principle is being used in real world applications from universities and companies) and it may seem like it doesn't accomplish anything, but it does.
I had to explain to my PhD friend how to do all those things. Granted, he's looking to acquire his PhD and doesn't have it yet, but if you can do all these things, and well, then you'll have an excellent project for your portfolio as a sysadmin, and I can show you a few companies and Universities to apply at as a sysadmin ;)

@drachenstern That looks like containers?
like openVZ

Can you build it without looking at their work?
Or at least, without duplicating it?
Do they do diskless nodes?
I hadn't ever paid attention

@drachenstern I'm(or want to be) a sys admin so no not really
@drachenstern You'd have to define disks

1:04 AM
@Jacob no vhd file per machine, no requirement to have /dev/hda1 be a phsyical device

I don't have programming skill to that end, but thats not a good VM idea honestly
@drachenstern Yeah, OpenVZ would fly

It is a good idea and I'll tell you why
The project they're working on involves live migrating datacenters across the country
To copy a bunch of 10 or 20gb disk images for a rack full of CPUs would take literally forever
to copy 4-8GB of RAM is much much faster

@drachenstern Yeah, but I can easily break out of OpenVZ due to the fundamentals for design. Well maybe not easily but its still possible
@drachenstern although that appears to be for a HPC system?

They're using racks of machines with between 8 and 32 CPUs (age dependent purchasing) and each CPU gets it's own VM and they load the machines up with as much RAM as they can stand, so if you figure you have a rack of 512 CPUs, and you want to migrate all that, well, you can't wait on disks
@Jacob it is
Good catch.
Altho, my explicit MPI declaration in there should've said that

@drachenstern I honestly don't really want to work with HPCs.
I haven't studied them much

1:09 AM
You don't want to work with HPCs or you don't want to program them?
Consider these datacenter specs:
100s of racks, terrabytes/s of fiber, and working with some of the most cutting edge research groups in the world

@drachenstern Both really.

Honestly maintaining them is easy
Programming them is more difficult

true

But ask @Zypher or any of the other guys like him, ya gotta be able to code at some point as a sysadmin

But all my skills are acquired through what my budget allows, what fits in my rack at my dads office and the amount of data 35/35 FTTP allows
so not much HPC

1:12 AM
be back in a bit ya'll
True, but this way you can explore HPC

@drachenstern I can code just not a HPC VM system

you don't have to do anything interesting with it
@Jacob so learn how ;)
Honestly, what I really wanted to see is if you knew how to install to a RAMDISK from a network store

@drachenstern So run OpenVZ?:)

That's the one that tends to throw people off
Here, I'll be back in a bit
gotta go walk the dog and such
We can talk more

@drachenstern Currently I know alot more about Internet routing protocols and whatnot

1:23 AM
@drachenstern yes

2:10 AM
@Zypher no

@drachenstern I hope you have some good material for those 30-seconds of spinner watching. ;)

That's a "default" setting, I'm not a big fan of repolling webservers often for something that I don't know how long it will take.
Besides, I'm sure we can come up with something. I just wanted a "demo" so people could see the workflow.
Did it look totally dumb?
It was unscripted and off the cuff

Ideally you'd want to edit that out, but that'd more involved. But, it shouldn't be big issue.
It looked fine.
Kinda hard to tell w/o audio. :)

Ideally I want to let the sales team look at it, cos they're the ones that would use it without being edited

Ah, it's for internal consumption?

2:16 AM
er, they're the ones that would use it, before I would consider editing it
or something
Initially, but it may be distributed to customers
We can't always actually run these things live.
So when I have an opportunity to do a demonstration and record it, I thought I should do that ...
So how does my overall workflow and page response look, neverminding that a) I've got a crappy graphic for "unkown" and b) it's running on the debug instance so everything is slower than I would like it to be.
is feeling rather self deprecating tonight
And in case it wasn't OBVIOUS this is what I was working on yesterday too when I was soliciting advice

what's up kev?

If you ever need advice on testing MPEG streams, I've almost completely forgotten everything I knew about that.

Wait, you know how to decode/encode MPEG streams?

2:22 AM
and I'm back

The flow seemed fine to me. Other than the long wait for connection/disconnection the page response looked ok.

Like what they mean and such?
@GeorgeMarian yeah, that number was devised by the boss

@drachenstern Yeah, my job four years ago was C developer on a device which converted MPEG2 streams to QAM.

@drachenstern What are you doing with videos?

So you know about MP3 encoding/decoding/recoding/etc?
@Jacob in re: Mootinator's comments or in re: my discussion with George?

2:24 AM
@drachenstern Not enough anymore to be particularly useful.

@mootinator can you tell me where to start? I want to work with the low level stuff, not the high level stuff

I was just reflecting on how I went from MS hating C developer to C# obsessed .NET guy over four years.

I don't want a library to do it for me, I want to understand the underlying stuff
@mootinator happens to a lot of people
@Jacob reading != understanding

@drachenstern I hit enter before you said that...

@Jacob :p

2:26 AM
I gleaned most of the knowledge I needed from the specification docs.

So who has not seen the moon tonight?
@mootinator interesting.
I want to transcode and I want to do pattern matching to the tune of looking for similar works
More specifically I want something completely automated, or as much as can be done
Present me with a list of choices and say "this looks like it may be a duplicate, verify?"

@drachenstern Ah, nifty.

I've seen it done on photos
figure if it can be done with photos it can be done with music

I don't know whether having access to the ISO specs would help much with that.
The DSP would be the more difficult problem, I would think.

then I want to take a secondary part of the work and have a library of highly encoded work and stream it at a lowerbitrate sort of like all the other streamers do, but to allow storing of "master" songs based on uploads, and only giving people access to the work they've uploaded, but discarding their uploads ... it's a concept, so I'm working on it
@mootinator how do you mean the DSP?
Make sure I'm on the same page as you
But first is comparison of two songs

2:31 AM
@drachenstern Evaluating whether the samples are similar, independent of the actual file format.

@mootinator yeah.

Well Its time to nuke from orbit my monitor/NS/cacti server..

I figure it's not an easy problem, but it's definitely a concept to work on
@Jacob why is that?

@drachenstern It can definitely be done. I remember using a service my cellular provided where you play a short clip of a song into your phone and it would text you the title/artist.

@drachenstern I'm redoing alot of things and It'll just be better to NFO it verses fight to change everything

2:33 AM
@mootinator well yeah, but I want to compare two local files, not stream them off to a server ;)
Consider where I have studio mixes and stage mixes. It would be nice to have it isolate chunks of them and figure out that they match up.

@drachenstern The two clips in that service were local to someone.

Especially when tracks don't have names
@mootinator yes, I want them to be local to me ;)

@drachenstern I've always wanted to know more about DSP, but alas my work with streams mostly revolved around reporting bits of statistical information extracted from the PSI tables.

If my startup takes off(yeah right...) I'll hopefully get some nicer Hardware with ESXi. So everything will be virtual.

Well then what say after the summer we consider a group project @mootinator? I've got some others that might lake to play along too
@Jacob what precisely is this startup?

2:37 AM
@drachenstern Sure, keep me in the loop.

@drachenstern Mobile applications and Games(more games...) and potentially a Facebook app or 2

@mootinator will do
@Jacob that's not much of a defnition

@drachenstern Trying to be quick, and not so complex that I type rm -rf or something
but
Of course BIND won't update new records :(
@drachenstern If I can find that description I wrote somewhere... I think that was pretty good
there we go thats set... now to setup cacti
@drachenstern Ok, what do you want to know?

2:55 AM
17 mins ago, by drachenstern
@Jacob what precisely is this startup?

I could have used a co-working space about 10 years ago so my startup could have failed more gracefully.
;P

We have this excellent coworking space here in Shreveport that I never even knew about
if I ever don't work in an office and I live here I'm gonna probably look to work there ;)

Heh.
I should have taken the head of the CS department at the university seriously. I probably would have tried opening my own if that were the case.
I asked him if we could rent time in the lab during the summer when it was mostly empty.
He told me if he did that, all sorts of companies would be banging the doors down in order to get in to their high class facility.
I had the insight to realize that any old idiot could create a more useful work space than a CS lab for people to work in, but not to realize that would actually be a viable business model ;)

Well there's the matter of capital

@drachenstern We are a company that intents to change the way you look at your Smart phone with our games and apps(that cause you too become a zombie?)...

3:06 AM
If I had the capital to do something like that I would easily do that, on account of the basics are incredibly simple to provide.
@Jacob who is we?
@Jacob how do you think things need to be changed?

@drachenstern Peeps :) Moshe, Josh and myself currently

@drachenstern Capital would have been easy to come by back then. The gov't was handing out startup loans to CS grads with remotely reasonable sounding business plans like candy back then. :P

Interesting. I was under the impression Josh had too much work to do to start doing iPhone and FB apps.
remind me to smack him on the head later ;)

@drachenstern He does, not currently sure why he said yes? I think he just wants to play some Node.JS...

@mootinator people are still starting them up today. It's a matter of being in the right area to provide people that sort of workplace.
@Jacob probably

3:09 AM
@drachenstern Yup.
We had two open up locally in the last year.

@drachenstern I'll be doing the FB apps, I think. and porting to WP7. I also will manage the servers.
but if I got to choose I'd only manage the servers

@Jacob So that's great. We've established that you're going to have servers, and you're going to have node.js, and WP7 and FB apps.
What are you going to do?

@drachenstern as in myself or as a company
I assume company

@Jacob you assume correctly

@drachenstern There was a great blog post about that somewhere...

3:15 AM
It's 11? What the hell, me.

@mootinator huh?

@TimStone It is indeed 11. AM. For me :P

@TimStone hi. It's 11. Have you been asleep?

@mootinator What?

@drachenstern Developers' strange habit of picking the tools they want to use before deciding what they want to build.

3:17 AM
@YiJiang Yeah, yeah ;)
@drachenstern Apparently...I'm very confused how this happened.

@TimStone you need that you know
@YiJiang Happy Sunday

@TimStone You were drugged, just to see how you'd react.

@drachenstern Hehehe Happy Saturday :P

@mootinator do you see what I'm getting at then? I'm totally confused what the hell he wants to do, but I see he already knows how to solve it. Node.JS and WP7. Too sweet.
@YiJiang ;)

@drachenstern I slept a reasonable amount last night...not sure why I fell asleep. Also not entirely sure when I fell asleep..

3:20 AM
@drachenstern Exactly why I am still planning...

@TimStone My advice would be to sleep more regularly and for longer periods of tiem

Never!

@Jacob I'm still confused what problem you want to solve
@TimStone I can see this

@TimStone flaw 1, define reasonable
2 hours?
maybe 3?

activates the voting ring

3:23 AM
@TimStone /me needs a target

But no, if you happen to agree with the quality of the answer, this could use a little love.
I have zero idea why the OP accepted the other (partially wrong) answer, and then the other answerer apparently revenge down voted or something.

@drachenstern Well most app markets are full of ad ridden "Ifart,Igun, non quality apps. I am going to fix that. I reference an xkcd comic

@Jacob ... I'm ... I'm trying to understand ... how are you going to fix those markets? Are you going to hire a team of elite SWAT to storm into datacenters and run littlebobbytables scripts?

@Jacob So, you're making an independent app market? Or a really good app.

@drachenstern option 2 sounds really awesome, I think I'll do that

3:29 AM
@drachenstern This reminds me of the Barnes & Noble Ninjas.

I suggest an app which reverses my ill-advised purchasing decisions.

@mootinator sorry?

@Jacob I'm sure jQuery can handle unilateral reversing of contracts. It can do anything.

@mootinator rm -rf

Can't afford that mortgage? iRenege to the rescue! (Powered by jQuery)
6

3:33 AM
@mootinator only the cool kids use jQuery.

@Jacob hence why you would be using it ... duh! bi-winning!

So nice to NFO a server...
I giggle when I type rm -rf; for the fun of it

rm -rf /
Alt+F4

4:00 AM
Ah right, SUPERMOON!

@TimStone it was rather large here
I managed to catch it low on the horizon

Yeah, thankfully it wasn't overcast here tonight.

@drachenstern supermoon???

@Jacob you should go outside more
It would be beneficial in so many ways

4:03 AM
@drachenstern I'm a sysadmin;what do you expect?

@Jacob you to go outside
come with me over to the comms

honestly, I do work on stuff outside... I just don't watch the news because our local stations suck

It doesn't look very "SUPER" to me...

@drachenstern I'm always in comm room :P

@GeorgeMarian Here, lemme readjust your standards bar to a lower level.
2

4:05 AM
Yea but I'm not. Also, I'm blue over there ;)

@drachenstern why?

why ... what?

@drachenstern Why do you have teh modz?

dba.se

@TimStone hehe

4:09 AM
@drachenstern and DBA.SE means you get modz on SF how?

because all the chat's except mso and so are on chat.se
and getting mod on any one chat.se applies to all chat.se

@drachenstern thats definitely a bug...

@Jacob it's by design actually
there's a mod chat on chat.se and because we all have mod we can all collaborate in one room
technically MSO should be on chat.se as well
but the team@SE uses this server for private comms
so they won't merge them

@drachenstern And I refuse.
Which of course is relevant.

4:11 AM
status-bydesign

So there's no reason for us to not have mod power on all the chat.se sites
here's what I can do as a mod on a chat.se:
ban users
delete posts
edit posts
pin posts
edit room descriptions
respond to flags
and clear stars / unpin posts but really ... who does that?

@drachenstern I agree there take a look at the SF comm feed hahaahaha

what am I looking at exactly?

@drachenstern Only fascists.

@TimStone oh, that's right, that's why I do that ...
I'm waiting till I have that power on chat.mso .. I can think of about 5000 stars I can remove :p

4:16 AM
@drachenstern All the stars are about boobies
in The Comms Room on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 2 days ago, by DanBig
"Boob" is the perfect word. The B looks like an aerial view of them, the 2 o's look like a front view, and the b looks like a side view.

I see that
That would be an excellent reason why you need to go outside more
Also, girls are outside.
They talk to geeks more than geeks think
Hey Tim go play a game on your iphone

@drachenstern eh, lets say that doesn't apply here and leave it at that

@Jacob that only leaves two reasons, and the only reason not to talk about them at 15 is purely shyness. I bet this room is a lot more accepting than you might think. I bet I'm a lot more accepting than you might think. But I'll respect your request

@drachenstern Just wandering around aimlessly, surely. Also, what's this about a game where I don't have a particularly good move?

@TimStone that's not yet stopped you from whooping my ass by like 80 points
and who's GiantOrangeHead?

4:22 AM
I think you're winning right now

He's much better than @GeorgeMarian
@TimStone for like two more turns maybe
make that one turn
also @RebeccaChernoff needs to play too
also, @RebeccaChernoff needs to see :574417

@drachenstern Well I'm over weight( I do exercise, I have lost some), I have a brain/muscle disease called CP and I am somewhat of a jerk
:This article is about cerebral palsy as an overall umbrella term. For the most common type of cerebral palsy worldwide, see the article on spastic diplegia; for spasticity more generally, see spasticity and spastic quadriplegia. For specifics on other types of CP, see their corresponding articles. Cerebral palsy (CP) is an umbrella term encompassing a group of non-progressive, non-contagious motor conditions that cause physical disability in human development, chiefly in the various areas of body movement. Cerebral refers to the cerebrum, which is the affected area of the brain (althou...

She'll whoop 'em into shape
@Jacob means nothing to girls as a general rule

Yeah. I should've played more Scrabble when I was younger. Would've probably helped with my spelling.

The ones who are worried about those things you don't want to be associated with in the first place
True for guys as well as girls

4:24 AM
@drachenstern I haven't found anyone who isn't yet...

Study ... Study? @TimStone STUDY? ... ffs
@Jacob then go outside moar :p

@drachenstern Well, and not to imply that I agree, but that last item can be fixed :P
@drachenstern I thought I was playing "Words describing things I never do"?

@drachenstern I'm not social, thats another "disorder"

@TimStone lol
@Jacob and now we get to the real problem
So what does your therapist say?

@TimStone I'm working on that one...

4:26 AM
@TimStone I'm gonna pretend that I have a viable play

@drachenstern I only have OP and PT not a therapist in that sense

So, when I see that...

@Jacob well if you have a "social disorder" you should get one. I see a therapist about every three weeks (scheduling is such a bitch sometimes)

I don't expect to get that.

@TimStone there's your problem. It's "powered by Oracle"

4:28 AM
golf claps Oh Oracle.

@TimStone Surprise! the help site is broken!
@drachenstern :|

@Jacob I take it that's a "no thanks"?

@drachenstern more or less

@Jacob one less thing for you to bemoan then. No excuse if you acknowledge it's broken and refuse to want it fixed.

@drachenstern Honestly, its one more thing for my parents to deal with, and they really don't need that.

4:42 AM
@Jacob backwards. It's one more thing for you to deal with and it's something they can do to help you and to take care of you, and to prepare you for the real world. You'll also quit being such a dick, so you'll get along with them better, so it will make ya'lls relationship a lot better. See how with the right perspective and not being 15 it suddenly isn't a CRAPPY idea?

@drachenstern Thats a good point,I'll bring it up tomorrow
@drachenstern Well I can't not be 15; but sure ?
Hello @Moshe

@Jacob it doesn't have to be tomorrow. But as someone who grew up without the physical handicaps but with all the emotional mental ones, I needed it and never had the option to know I needed it. I needed mentors.

@drachenstern I use tomorrow as later :)

Hi folks.
@Jacob Hi.

@Moshe Hello (again)

4:46 AM
@drachenstern - What's up?

I was early diagnosed ADHD and should've been diagnosed Aspergers and or Autistic. At this point I've had a lot to learn and I've done my best to learn those things, so if I were to be considered Aspergers I would be High Functioning. So ... therapy works best
@Moshe in re:?

@drachenstern nothing in particular. I've submitted the update to Apple, as well as Nippon Xtreme.

@Moshe Nippon Xtreme?

Nippon Xtreme? :D

the "free" version?

4:47 AM
@drachenstern Yes. 10 days, 1,000 yen, less random events, five locations. Oh, no Game Center support either.

@Moshe why "Xtreme"?

And a slightly different icon.
@drachenstern It's more difficult. Less money, less time, same debt.
It's essentially a functioning demo.
I threw it together by copying the Nippon source code and reworking a bunch of the game engine. Mostly deleting stuff.

GRRR
Opsview won't install correctly

@Moshe So you're updating icons? ;)

@drachenstern oh, no.
The icon you saw went out.

4:50 AM
lol

I think "Nippon: Edition for Losers" might drive sales of the paid (Game of the Year) version better.

lmao
don't be mean Kev

:O
Not trying to be mean :\/
I'm a "MARKETING GENIUS"

He's just playing Marketing Manager!
was slow on the draw

4:53 AM
^_^

@Moshe mind signing into GTalk?

I think my body has finally adapted to the time change. I'm gonna walk this mutt and find my bed, I think.

@mootinator For sure.
@Jacob - Hang on.

@Moshe ok

@mootinator - Hehe. Puleez.
:/
Oddly, someone bought and rated Uncle Fred.
Does anyone here want to claim responsibility?
