12:42 AM
Okay, I'm back.
@Fosco Are you around? @GeorgeMarian are you around? @drachenstern? I need some folks to test my latest app. It's very much a raw product, but it's functional.
@Jacob - You here?

@Moshe Yes

Hi

Hello

Got access to an iPod now?
er, iOS device

@Moshe not currently sorry...

12:45 AM
@Jacob ok

iDevice!

@MichaelPetrotta - hehe. Yea, got an iDevice that you want to use to test a new app?

hi @Moshe

I am working on a bookmarker for audio files.

that depends.

12:45 AM
@Moshe I mean, I have the sim...

Say you have an audiobook.
@Jacob I need a real device for this.

right,what I thought sorry

@MichaelPetrotta - Pretend that you have a really long audio file and you want save your place in it. That's what this app does.
@MichaelPetrotta What does this depend upon?

not sure why I would want that... I set the file's options to remember my location, and I'm good.

@MichaelPetrotta But you have to set that in iTunes, no?

12:48 AM
yes, but I add the file via iTunes too

Right, but this is easier.
Adding files in iTunes is easier then right clicking and clicking through multiple menus.
Here, you just tap twice and then you have an adjustable slider to set the place on your timeline.

does it remember my location when I exit the music app, or is it an alternative player app?

Well it can handle remote control events.
I'm kind of going back and forth between two options.
I'm not sure how easy it is to grab that playlist time before changing tracks. That's the challenge here.
I got an answer on this question:
1
A: Is there a way to get information about the previous iPod song?

Jonathan GrynspanSimple: When the song changes, set a variable foo somewhere to the current time, and set another variable bar to the new song's current playback time (usually gonna be 0.0.) When the song changes again, subtract the value of foo from the current time, then add the value of bar; the result is the ...

I'd assume it would be. The player app is not perfect, but it'd take more than bookmarks to pull me away from it

@MichaelPetrotta What else would it have to offer?
There's an event that's fired after the song changes, but not before. That means that I have to calculate the time difference myself.

12:53 AM
I listen to lots of podcasts. I switch back and forth between a limited set of my favorite podcasts, and whatever music I feel like at the moment. You have to click an awful lot to get back to the latest episode of the podcast I listen to 90% of the time

So, how about a favorites panel?

Sort of, yes.

So bookmarking and favorites, I suppose.
For a start.

A favorite like "the ep of podcast X that I was listening to most recently". If that makes sense.

A smart favorites panel...
Interesting.

12:55 AM
No guarantee you'd make money off that, but it's my most common annoyance.

Okay, well @MichaelPetrotta Would you like to start by being a beta tester? You'd help with development in exchange for a promo code when it goes live.

I'd beta test that app, I guess

Thank you. I need your UDID and then I can add you to my Apple developer account's list of registered devices.
Just search the app store for any "UDID" app.
Email moshberm / gmail from it.

will do

Thanks.
I was going to do just bookmarks, but that's a good point, favorites.
I'm out for a bit folks, be back in a while.

1:50 AM
Hi @Moshe, I'm around now. Hah, and you're gone.

2 hours later…
3:55 AM
No rambling for two hours? Unacceptable!
Also, AT&T is buying T-Mobile? Say whaaaaa.

4:32 AM
heh

5:20 AM
Rearranging my room always takes more effort than I expect.. yawns

5:33 AM
Grrr...just my luck, I get sick the day before an important interview.

:/

I'm trying to decide if I should just email them now and give them a heads up or wait until morning and see how I feel.

5:46 AM
Hmm, I'd wait until the morning. No sense in making a deal out of it now.

@TimStone Fair enough. I can decide in the morning if I'm feeling well enough to go through an interview.
That said, the fever did peak at 103.5. =/

Oh, damn. That's rough. :/

Yah, I was pretty close to hospital visit time. But, I hopped in a cold bath and remembered I hadn't taken the Tylenol when I got out. lol

I take it that things have simmered down a bit now then eh? Heh :P

Yah, the last reading was 101.0. Been taking my temp every few mins.

5:51 AM
Hmm, it appears that I cut my toe open somehow...damn furniture.

Probably shouldn't have dropped that tv stand on my foot, whoops. Hmm, hopefully I'll have time to get this letter in the mail tomorrow too... sighs

lol
How'd you manage that?

The tv stand? I was assembling one I just bought at Walmart and I flipped it over a bit carelessly, hahah.

heh oops

5:53 AM
Yeah, totally my bad.
Hopefully when I'm done rearranging, I'll finally have adequate room to use my Kinect. :D

LOL
I guess that would require a fair amount of open space.

It needs a fair amount. It's not ridiculous, but the layout I had before wasn't working out too well.

Jin
6:11 AM
morning

@Jin Evenin'
Well, I guess it is almost morning here, too.

Jin
well it's only 2am here

no, it is 1am!</obligatory timezone nonsense>

2 hours later…
8:10 AM
$ dropbox start
Dropbox isn't running!
Dropbox is already running!
:/

Service announcement. IT (and thus HR) has detected my IP as the 5th most active (out of 200). I'll be keeping a low profile for a while...

@Benjol ah, too bad! Do they count requests? Chat will cause a lot of those

@Benjol Time to isntall a botnet on all other computers on the network

@badpssockpuppet Good point

Jin
@pekka i haven't cut my hair btw.

8:17 AM
@Benjol I suggest becoming a mod on SE, it allows work-safe ninja chatting. Ask @Grace ;)

Jin
@badpssockpuppet speaking of ninja, i watched so many ninja videos on youtube tonight, good and the bad

Sure, you then have a lot of pesky users making pesky flags, reporting pesky posts, making pesky discussions etc.

@Jin I see now!

Jin
@What i just have my hair tied in my twitter avatar.

@Jin yeah! Looks very different. Long hair is a nice instrument to change looks

Jin
8:21 AM
@What you changed your handle to What? I was confused for a sec

@Jin yeah, a silly joke
Welbog (who is "Whom") now commented What? - Whom on one of my questions
So I had to change the name in order to do Whom? - What underneath

Interrogatives as nicknames have whence become uncool.

@badpssockpuppet I would probably say the same, if I was the one who wussed out of joining the fun!
There were so many possibilities

Wussed out? I told you I must wait til the 30th

whence

8:25 AM
Anyone around? :)

whither
@badpssockpuppet well, there is the old copying trick
Hi @Konerak

meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/79110/… <- I really don't understand what Jeff (Atwood) is saying, but I don't want to keep bothering him. Can anyone explain?

@What I have like 35 accounts :/

@badpssockpuppet okay, I'll let that count as an excuse ;)
Although renaming yourself to "Whence" on english.se would be kind of cool.

I'd have to use English first :P
too many Italians for my tastes!

8:29 AM
@badpssockpuppet on English.se? Really? Ah, didn't know that
I was under the impression that most people there were native english speaking folk

Hi @Pekka
(why are you called @what here?)

@Konerak long story
But it allows for nice stuff like
Say @what?

Hehe ok. Say Pekka, spare 2 minutes for an old @konerak? : )
Someone asked on meta what the red text meant on a profile. Jeff explained this is no longer used, but now I'm wondering what the grey text means.
I already asked Jeff, but he told me he already answered... I can't find it though - could you take a look?

@Konerak He means, that this bug report is now 'fixed' as they no longer use red labels for private fields any more

@Konerak I think the red text symbolizes info that is only visible to you

8:34 AM
Read his accepted answer

They removed the colour from the labels

I see that. I was asking why some text is grey.

Eh, all labels are gray now

The contents :) "real name" is black, "visited" has grey text.
Not the labels, sorry.
"member for" is grey, age is black.
/me is colorblind but grey and black still work!

The question was never about the contents AFAIK
The content for 'member for' and 'last seen' has different colors signifying how recent the date is
Anyway, the colors don't mean anything - my age and location is public, but not my real name and email

8:39 AM
The colors don't mean anything? Then why are they there? : )
They removed the red labels because "it was ultimately more confusing than useful" but they'd leave grey/black distinctions without meaning?

Eh, to be fair I'd never noticed that distinction and cared about it

@Konerak that's true
On a second look, I see that the OpenID info is grey instead of red
Doesn't make sense to me, either

Open a then

Thanks guys : )

No problem.

8:41 AM
I just didn't want to keep bothering Jeff if maybe I was just not seeing it.

@Konerak Jeff is that way sometimes. Cryptic answer, no follow-up
But asking a second or third time often helps. :)

Can I punch the person who decided to name the tooltip that comes up when you leave your mouse over an element for a bit of time the 'alt text'

@YiJiang shouldn't that be the "title text"?
In what context?

Q: Report total number of question views not as alt-text on mobile devices?

templatetypedefHello all- I was using my phone to check in on a question I asked that has over 1000 views. I was curious exactly how many views there were, but it's measured in kviews. On a PC I could just use the alt-text to see how many views there are, but on an Android you can't hover over something to s...

There's even a tag, which is incorrectly applied too

Heh, I see

8:46 AM
Oh wow, JavaScript Garden now has a Russian translation

Nice!!

I'll be merging this in today, hopefully git is up to the task

I haven't had the time to look into it in depth, but from my cursory glance, it looks really high quality

You speak Russian?

@YiJiang No, I mean JS garden in general, I was just about to edit
Very nice work.
You were featured on golem.de recently, a german IT portal
Should have made for a spike in traffic, I expect

8:50 AM
It was one of the top referrers, but there are too many 'spikes' in the graph

@YiJiang sweet!

9:03 AM
@What, @Yi Jiang: I posted it as a question: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/84015/… : )

@Konerak You're okay with exposing all of those private information like that?

/me nods.
I blanked them out first, but it's an image, bots won't crawl it.
And you guys are allowed to know my google email addy : )

9:20 AM
So, any news about this?

Q: Should we cap reputation gained from questions at +2000?

Jeff AtwoodBased on: Could we put a cap on reputation earned by asking questions? I am starting to wonder if we should cap reputation gained for questions. I have historically resisted this, but: It does seem nonsensical that users can get 10,000+ reputation purely on the basis of asking hundreds of qu...

In other news, have you checked your SE account?
The rep chart has returned, with vengeance.

it has?! checks

Jin
@badpssockpuppet i don't see it

@Jin Switch to the reputation tab: stackexchange.com/users/…

SE or other sites as well?

Jin
9:43 AM
@badpssockpuppet oh that's on SE.com i thought you meant individual SE2.0 sites.

wow, I'm quite impressed. Like the "drag to zoom" feature

I hope other graphs on SE will also switch to this toolkit :)
It looks and feels much better

10:19 AM
@badpssockpuppet Indeed, I was quite surprised to see that there

2 hours later…
12:22 PM
I just noticed that even after being nearly silent on chat for 5 days, I am still the top user. This is a bad sign.

@TheOutOfStarsException You'll have to try harder, or fail, chatting.

Good Morning

1 hour later…

@TimStone: @GeorgeMarian: @ircmaxell: and @badpssockpuppet: I have a Doubt in Java, can i shoot it here, friends

@SankarGanesh Go for it

No idea, haven't done java in a decade

@TheOutOfStarsException Thanks, Here's My Question, I had created a Java Swing Application, I want to run my applications, eventhough the JRE is not installed in the system, For this i had exported a Jar and used Launch4j for Bundle JRE, i got failure in this mode

Hm, sorry, I am unsure of the answer

@TheOutOfStarsException It's Ok, Now i have another idea, can you tell me whether my idea is correct, i thought that , i can convert my java class to native files such as c,C++ files, so that i can run in the M/C , which donot have JRE, is this idea is a right one or wrong one

1:39 PM
sorry... I am not sure on that either. You might be better off waiting for @TimStone, he knows java far better than I

@TheOutOfStarsException well, this url java.net/node/655012
@TimStone: Friend, Are you here, i need your Suggestions, on your problem

he is not here right now

@TheOutOfStarsException Oh, It's ok, Did you saw that Url

@Moshe:Hi

1:50 PM
@SankarGanesh Hi

@Moshe Any Idea on Question

I just hit 5,400 rep!! \O/
No idea, I'm not a Java programmer. If you want to run Java without the JDK, you may need an Android phone. :P

@Moshe oh

Think you're best asking a question on SO rather than in here to be honest.

@tombull89 Thank you Friend

@RebeccaChernoff Well come on, do you really want a socially awkward 17 year old to go to a pub illegally and meet real people?

> Accepting idea for meetup place.

@RebeccaChernoff I've commited to the Bristol, UK, one, but I'm more of a SF/SU person and not a programmer, so why not a SE community day rather than SO? Otherwise I'll be sat there with a load of programmers and I won't know what any of them will be on about.

Errr, exactly for that reason. With a SE one, the photo user would think "there's just gonna be all these programmers there, I'm not going."

I see where you're coming from, but woudln't it be better to have a SE community meetup? That way you'll meet more people (and more of the community) - something which I'm currently proud to be part of.

3:09 PM
Does anyone know of an approx release timeframe for C# 5.0? We are designing something now and don't expect it to be in production for about 2 years, and were wondering if it is reasonable to expect C# 5.0 to be out by then or not.

@Rachel: and @RebeccaChernoff: Sorry for disturbing you, i m in big confusion how to find wether JRE installed in a System or not via Java code, if it's not installed , My code has to install it in Silent Mode
I had refered this url, but i was not able to understand, do you have any idea guys

What are your thoughts on CompTIA certifications? I'm half debating going for Security+ and Linux+. Either that, or go for another Security cert...

3:48 PM
@Rachel (if you're still watching). No idea to be honest. I'd expect that in 2 years the answer is yes, but I'm not sure that I'd start coding against that and guaranteeing a release date to customers...
@Rachel Which bit are you wanting to use, async?
@RebeccaChernoff, by the way, I pretty much worked out how to do globalstorage, so let me know if you still want that functionality :)

@TheOutOfStarsException Hello

Josh has been in the room? Impossible! He's got too much to do! :p

@drachenstern He finished the migration

@Benjol Yes the async/await

4:05 PM
@Jacob hey there
@drachenstern I have finished the migration as @Jacob says, but, I do still have lots of small fires that need to be put out

We expect to do ongoing work on the product after its initial release since v1 won't be full featured, however the License agreement for AsyncCTP says it can't be used in a production environment without another agreement with MS

ok I'm gone again

like the wind.... wooosh!

@TheOutOfStarsException Fire? that sounds bad

indeed
shouldn't you be in school? ;-)

4:09 PM
@TheOutOfStarsException Sickness

Yuck! I hope you feel better soon

@TheOutOfStarsException yep
@TheOutOfStarsException Can you get on AIM

@TheOutOfStarsException: Hi, I have a Question to you

Go ahead and ask; I am overwhelmed at the moment and my reply may be delayed

4:26 PM
He has alot of server fires that he has to deal with

I have an answer for myself. But I'm not sure that it really matters to anyone else...

i have to install JRE Programmability if the System does not have JRE, i had dected JRE is installed in the system or not, but i have no idea how to install JRE programmtically, some people said you can use installer, but i donot know how to use installer for this purpose i searched in sun documnet, installing JRE in slient mode, there's also i donot know how to use that command iie.fing.edu.uy/ense/asign/desasoft/jdk/docs/technotes/guides/…
@mootinator: Hi, Mate, Any Idea on this doubt

Nope.

19 by the way

@SankarGanesh, what does google say? What does Stack Overflow say? Chat isn't really meant to be a replacement for the sites.

4:31 PM
@RebeccaChernoff Sure it is....

@RebeccaChernoff can't get you, Mate

A: [PHP] global in functions

GordonGlobals are evil This is true for the global keyword as well as everything else that reaches from a local scope to the global scope (statics, singletons, registries, constants). You do not want to use them. A function call should not have to rely on anything outside, e.g. function fn() { gl...

I wish I had a diamond here so I could kill that blue spot with fire.
but then I'd drown in flags like everybody else on SO, so... meh.

blue spot?

@ircmaxell The hell? O_o

Sigh, why is Chrome set always on top

Yeah, it's getting rather odd. He's been deleting comments left and right, so the true history isn't there (just those last 2 posts)

4:58 PM
So there's a PHP voting ring? :P

According to him
There's definitely a PHP CloseVote ring, but that's the first I've heard of a voting ring...

Argh. Decisions, decisions. Reschedule or tough it out...
