Does anyone remember a swastika gaming reference on either the blog or meta?

Ah thanks.
Yes, I saw your score. I would love to know your technique.
As far as bank/credit union buttons, I can implement but I don't think they existed in the original game.
Erm. Actually, perhaps.

goto the CU on day 0, borrow the max, buy as much sushizushi as possible in the 400k-750k range, fill in the gaps with 10k-15k sashimi/maki/inari (in that order) and sell on the next stop (tokyo tends to pay out higher)
rinse repeat

I see. I was working towards that. I just noticed my sashimi prices were too good.
I could mess with that between updates :p
Okay, gotta run.
Thanks.

For the third time, quoting popular pop references get me flag suspended from chat. I'm sorry if "I'm on a boat" is too awesome for your delicate eyes. That won't stop me from quoting it.
Please stop using the dictionary and start using the brain.
Thank you.

@badp ...what?
What's wrong with boats? I don't get it.

4:26 PM
What I hate the most is that messages take ~30 minutes to be flagged to oblivion
which means that if it was offensive, deleting it won't solve anything now.
Except it wasn't offensive, but your dictionary can't tell you that.

@PopularDemand it's from the Old Spice commercials

yawns Good morning. Why are people harassing poor @badp?

idk, just got here myself :p
trying to figure out a webreference issue on my end :\

@drachenstern But that's not offensive.

@PopularDemand hence my confusion. It may have another reference to which I'm not privy :\

4:29 PM
hey somethings wrong the edit toolbar?

@TimStone We have to get it in now before he becomes a Gaming mod and kills us all

Q: How can I retain modal views and alerts across rotations?

MosheI'm using willRotateToInterfaceOrientation to swap views when my iPad rotates. If I have a modal view or an alert view open when my device rotates and swaps views, the view swaps and the alert disappears and does not reappear, even if the alert is "presented" again later. What can I do to fix ...

@NickCraver Ah, there they are. And the color returns to Meta. (Well... relatively speaking.)

@NickCraver Thanks

@PopularDemand yeah same here!

Hmmm, what a problem :\

hello hello

@OctavianDamiean Hey there

4:54 PM
@Moshe nope why? lol
@MichaelMrozek couldn't try I'm away from the desktop, I fired my laptop and it works fine there =S??

@giddy I have an iOS question.

Oh no, Words with Friends for Android has arrived.

I used to harbor illusions of crushing @RebeccaChernoff at that game, but I've now learned just how bad I am at scrabble

I've been on a pretty big winning streak lately, not sure how I managed to pull that off.

I have got to get a modern phone so I can crush you people at Scrabble clones.

Jonathan ChuSo I've got ratings for items by users in a mysql database, and I was wondering whats the best way to check if a list of items has rated by a user. Selenium

Proposed Q&A site for users and contributors of the Selenium open source projects

Currently in commitment.

A51 oneboxing!

@PopularDemand yeah, I was just looking at that. I have no clue what Selenium is aside from browsing that page

@drachenstern Test tool for web apps. My lead just told me to learn it.

Selenium is..big enough to warrant its own site?

5:13 PM
Not that Selenium isn't full of win or anything, just seems kind of limited in scope.

@TimStone open a discussion about it.

Those discussions seem to not go well, mostly because they're only seen by people already supporting the site

Simon BrownWhen I go to a per-site meta without visiting the parent site (and thus being auto-logged-in there), I am not automatically logged-in. Would it be possible to do this? @TimStone huh, special tags don't show up as special in the oneboxes. I never noticed that before.

@TimStone Psh. It's just lazy.

According to the B&N website, mine has a "Teen Book Club" that meets at 1PM on Thursdays. Wouldn't all teens be in school at 1PM on Thursdays...by law?
Maybe it's secretly a Twilight book club for middle-aged women.
Anyway, I'm headed there since I don't want to be home all day.

@RebeccaChernoff oy the easter eggs

@PopularDemand That's also a possibility :P

@DanGrossman you're ... you're headed to a teen book club because you don't want to be at home all day? :p (I keed I keed)

@DanGrossman Indeed. It is a club about (teen books), not a (book club) for teens.

Computer Science

Proposed Q&A site for the current cstheory site is for research on theoretical computer science only. This site would be a general site for computer science and theory for professionals, undergraduates and enthusiasts alike. (And hence *not* a duplicate of cstheory).

Currently in defintion.

sighs

5:48 PM
@MichaelMrozek Why the sigh?

@PopularDemand As far as I can tell it's identical to cstheory, except more general

@MichaelMrozek So it'll have the same questions, but with worse answers?

No, it'll have the same questions plus some additional ones, with identical answers

@MichaelMrozek Sounds like MO vs. Math SE. Which I haven't paid much attention to, but last I heard it seemed to be working out okay...?

That's exactly what it is, and I'm not fans of them either
It's almost comically elitist. "We're too good for your peasant questions"?

5:52 PM
@Pop
46 mins ago, by Popular Demand
You wouldn't believe the things they do with computers these days!!!

@Pekka I hear the computers started talking to each other on some sort of Inter-Network.

@PopularDemand that's going a bit far. Maybe in 20, 30 years....
@MichaelMrozek true, and I'm sure sharing a site with people who think like that is no fun at all. But on the other hand, I can kind of understand... They don't want to be swamped with tons of newbie questions, that is a somewhat valid motive

I think the trick is to move your entire arm instead of just your wrist.

Still, I'd like to see a nicer solution to that issue.

If people think it's bad now trying to figure out which site a question belongs on, wait until we have the crossproduct of sites for every topic with sites for every skill level

5:56 PM
@PopularDemand pop yeah! I broke my ultra-super-definition laser mouse recently... Need to get me a new one so I can compete
@MichaelMrozek hahahaha, true

Somehow we went from SO's policy of "let's try to attract experts" to "let's group all the experts in one place, and keep everyone else out"

Yeah. I don't understand why that still works on SO, but it does
Despite the lot of newbie questions that come in.

@Pekka it's called critical mass

@drachenstern yeah, but how did they reach it? Apparently mainly through the blogging audience back then

@MichaelMrozek Have you seen the black magic they perform with maths? For the good of the people, they had to be locked away in isolation.

6:00 PM
I'm asking myself what the SE sites that are clearly failing to reach that mass (yet) can learn from that

@Pekka Indeed, I grow more convinced with each passing day that the x-factor of SO's success was the fact that the community was seeded with Joel on Software and Coding Horror readers.

@Pekka much better question, but as I recall it was by a) being stupid simple to use in the face of the competition, and b) being open to newbs coming and asking questions

I think to myself every few days that we need to find similar blogs or existing communities for other SE sites to symbiotically pair up with, but I can never think of the right way to make it happen.

@drachenstern yeah.... but both factors are not really bringers of experts, as such...

@TimStone I have; think how much intro math students could learn if they were permitted to intermingle

6:01 PM
@PopularDemand so what you need then is a similar group of pleebs for the other sites. Which generally means a group of people that aren't computer enthusiasts as a general rule?

Sorry, "pleebs"?

@MichaelMrozek they're allowed to read tho :\
@PopularDemand lowest common group of citizens (apparently I had one e too many? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plebs)

@drachenstern Oh, you pronounce it differently than I do. Interesting.

@Pekka too true

@drachenstern Actually, I think we need similar groups of experts. Find a place where people who are good at X already congregate, and introduce them to the SE model somehow.
Their enthusiasm -- or lack thereof -- towards computers shouldn't matter.

6:05 PM
@PopularDemand I meant enthusiasm loosely. My wife is not a computer enthusiast, but she uses it all day every day. Introducing her to a new website, whether she has interest or not, is trivial.
My mother, on the other hand, eschewed all things digital outside of Excel until she opened her own business, and only in the past 4 months did she sign up for anything more than a basic email service (she's finally on Facebook, for instance).
While she would have plenty of positive insight for OnStartups (having launched two successful businesses from scratch in the past) ... getting her to the site would take more know-how than I have
(assuming the simplistic model that OnStartups doesn't have to be about IPO oriented tech-savvy companies trying to corner the next .COM bubble)

@drachenstern Oh, okay, I see what you mean. In that case, we just need younger people. Computer enthusiasm seems to correlate with age groups; I'm not convinced that it correlates with expertise in other fields.

@PopularDemand but expertise does not correlate with youth

But if we're finding communities of people already on the Internet to work with, this is all moot.

True enough
but how many other groups live and die by the internet besides activists and computer/IT people?
You're not going to find the real experts (like my mom and startups or my dad and DIY - he's a general contractor) to get them on the site in the first place. However, people like Jon Skeet are going to be found on the internet. Because that's their primary place to exist. My dad's is in the workshop across the road from his house.

6:22 PM
@drachenstern I refuse to believe "You're not going to find the real experts" without some proof. We don't need all the experts, just some of them. And we don't need to cover every topic, just some of them. I could see it being easier to find existing communities based on hobbies (gardening, cooking) than on professions (plumbing, medicine), though.

@PopularDemand that's my point right there. You're not going to find subject matter experts in professions that don't naturally already occur on the internet. You're going to find hobbyists in plenty on the internet, because that's where people go in their downtime and to decompress. But for people who's business needs don't intersect with the internet, the business matter subject isn't going to lead them to look for a place to share their knowledge.
Their business subject isn't going to also be their hobby subject. For us that tends to be the case.

g'day, can someone here help me with this one:

Q: Copy Editor with too few revisions?

templatetypedefI just earned the Copy Editor badge on Stack Overflow, but I don't think I have 600 edits! On my profile, under "Activity > Revisions," I only have fourteen pages of edits, each of which has 30 edits on it. That's less than 450 edits. Did I somehow get this badge prematurely? Or do not all ...

seeing this yellow dot i didn't deserve makes me sick :P

This is interesting. Someone has left a browser open pointed to a page of one of my websites for over 3 weeks straight. Not revisiting or reopened, never closed, for 3 weeks.

@DanGrossman sounds like the other guy in the Tunes room
He's been in there for weeks, hasn't said anything and is always idle

Someone should let his boss know about the electric he's wasting leaving his work computer on all night!

The devs are mysterious like that. :P
I've had a SO question open since November...But I have restarted the browser numerous times since then.

When I worked at DuPont, we got yelled at for having lights on in our office. While in the office. They wanted to reduce power usage in the building and put up real-time usage displays all over.
If you managed to get hurt at work, you'd basically become the enemy of every other employee at the facility, too. They were working on some kind of 2 year safety record or something, with funding bonuses attached.
It was an odd place to work as a programmer

6:51 PM
@DanGrossman lol

@TheRenamedException Brace for excitement: meta.cooking.stackexchange.com/questions/999/…

@MichaelMrozek Thanks!

Cell phones were not allowed in most of the buildings at the facility. That went hand-in-hand with the monthly vapor cloud drills. If a reactor malfunctioned, a chemical vapor cloud could form and drift down halls. Dropping a cell phone could dislodge the battery, causing a tiny spark, that would ignite the cloud and kill everyone.
I was issued a set of safety goggles on my first day of work. I still have them, still sealed in the plastic they came in.
:shakes fist at his half-assed Windows Apache setup without proper SSL support:

@DanGrossman I refuse to believe someone decided the solution to that was to ban cell phones

@MichaelMrozek you would probably be amazed then

7:00 PM
@MichaelMrozek If I recall correctly, cell phones were indeed banned inside of many of the buildings.

@TimStone That's true of lots of places; cell phones are banned in part of my building. It's so you can't use them to make phone calls or record things, not to try and avoid sparks from dislodged batteries. That's the craziest thing I've ever heard

7:43 PM
@TheRenamedException Ah, that's annoying.

C'monnnnnnn, OP... just accept my answer and I'll get Tenacious!

@TimStone really was. and I have no idea what made it suddenly start working

Hmm..

Must be that the guest is Windows XP, LOL

@Moshe come up with some super starving-indy-artist excuse to post it on Reddit

7:45 PM
@DanGrossman since when did people need an excuse to post on Reddit? ;-)

@DanGrossman I'm not on Reddit. Does someone care to post something there about "An indie making a remake of an incredible classic"?

Heh, well, it's the headline that gets the upvotes

@DanGrossman That or voting rings

Point taken @Dan :-)

Just looked at reddit for the first time.
I'm shocked.

7:48 PM
Gaming Town Hall Chat ends tomorrow. Has everyone here voted for @badp yet???

VOTE FOR GRACE!

The homepage is very customizable, so what you see isn't necessarily what other people see. Once you have an account, you choose which subreddits (basically topics) you want to see.

VOTE FOR JUAN!

Speaking of reddit, here's some breaking news: reddit.com/r/programming/comments/fko6l/…

By default, you mostly get politics, funny and pictures ;o
@MichaelMrozek :lol:

7:49 PM
@DanGrossman riddle me this: I have 1 link karma. How do I get to 2?

@DanGrossman I'm shocked at the blandness of the layout actually, not the content.

Apparently everything I post ends in spambins...
unless I own the reddit, that is.

@Moshe It's like SO but even less complicated. Minimalist design, just lets you do what you need to do.

I've only posted like two links ever; I have a bunch of "comment karma", which is apparently even more irrelevant than link karma

Digg tried jazzing up their layout, look what happened.

7:50 PM
brb

I really wish there was a meta reddit because most of the time I have no clue about what does what.
...there is a reddit called 'meta' but that's not the same apparently

What's there to ask about? There's upvote, downvote and report. That's it.

So your post on reddit itself got no activity, but a post on webapps got a response from a reddit developer?

Do I need to pay $20 to post a link that people can see?!

7:54 PM
Lots of distracting cute girls here.

@MichaelMrozek yes, although that's because Jeff twitted my question

That's like needing to go on Quora to get answers from Jeff

@badp I posted one of those links for you, that showed up as [removed], remember?

@DanGrossman yeah

I posted more links later and they weren't [removed]. The spam filter trusts me again. No payment required.

7:55 PM
To get a question answered from a reddit dev, I needed Jeff to tweet about my SE question.

@DanGrossman Don't get banned from Teen Book Club. (I'm assuming that it's Thursday where you are through some sort of illogical time zone magic.)

Or you could send a message to the dev. It's not SO, you can talk to people privately. You don't post in a "meta".

It's always Thursday where I am. Is that abnormal?

@DanGrossman How would I know who's who? Why would I need a dev to answer my question?

Well, not a dev. An admin. Their names are red.

7:56 PM
I always thought /r/meta actually was for help, I just never really followed it

@MichaelMrozek Indiana: Unsupported!

@DanGrossman Always or only when they distinguish themselves? And it's not like there's a user list

> Are your submissions not showing up? Subreddit marked as spam? Is the spam filter acting up? Send a private message to the admins. (We really do want to help)
"feedback" is linked under "help" on every page of the site

Oh, yeah, the help system that was down that night ;)

7:57 PM
It's a normal company where you contact them for support, as opposed to make a public post somewhere.

Reddit really pays Python no good publicity

reddit was originally written in lisp

Yeah, I read that while trying to get help.
Are you mistaking me for someone who doesn't search before asking?

it also has 5 developers for 1 billion page views a month
it's also open source

We should probably stop implying that reddit might in any way be confusing or bad, before @DanGrossman kills us

7:59 PM
I see what you're doing there
the FOSS STFU maneuvre

well I'm sorry for asking people on the internet help what the fuck was I thinking

nah, but I think it's great PR for their stack
a billion page views a month that only takes 1 sysadmin to run

Next time I'll try asking one of the 5 devs help I AM SURE I AM WORTH THEIR TIME

@DanGrossman I'd be more impressed by that figure if I didn't spend more time looking at the reddit "sorry, we're down page" than reading articles

8:01 PM
> New rule: To get to call yourself "Pro-Life" you have to be "Anti-War." (self.politics)

Do I need to ask a dev what "self." means?

You could either read the FAQ, or simply infer its meaning by using the site as most people do

Oh, I could start using the site by drowning myself in the flood or comments or by posting stuff in spambins.

:has new comment replies on reddit:
We call that an "orangered".

Just sent a review request to engadget despite the fact that nippon is not a gadget

@DanGrossman "we don't like playing to an empty room..."?

No, where?

Hi there! :)

8:12 PM
Jan 28 at 20:12, by Josh
Pandora, why do you offer to let me pay for ad-free radio? Don't you know that using my outgoing firewall I can already make your service ad free? :-D
Jan 31 at 21:13, by Josh
@PopularDemand I closed all browser windows except Pandora and disabled all existing permissions for my browser on my outgoing firewall, so it asked me to connect to anywhere. I then very selectivly allowed rules that had .pandora.com in the name and were clearly things I wanted, like audio-blah.pandora.com or autocomplete.pandora.com and denied anything related to ads like doubleclick :-)
Ad free radio for free! \o/

Oh. Well, I don't want to deprive Pandora of revenue or misuse their service. They barely exist already, their royalty payments for streaming increase every year, and in 4 years their contract expires and they either renegotiate or go out of business (again).

Even better idea :-)

This chair is becoming uncomfortable. Maybe I'll find somewhere else to work soon.

HAHAHA
I already registered for the Cooking THC, posted my answer to the THC question, and set up the Google Doc to be used as a workspace for gathering questions
THAT'S COOKING TOWN HALL CHAT, NOT COOKING SPECIAL BROWNIES

@TheRenamedException Good work, Nigel. You're done for the day, you can go home now

Don't anyone get the wrong idea here
@MichaelMrozek awesome, thanks

I'm going to need a mod to edit that to say "@MichaelMrozek Very good, sir"

@TheRenamedException yeah right
status-do-♥♥-work
no they dont. Alpha characters only
lame

That might be a way to test the waters on Cooking.SE

@TheRenamedException, That will be the only THC this round as well.

Asking for special brownie recipes

8:51 PM
I was just thinking that, LOL
What if you live in Amsterdam? :-)

Or why they get stronger through fat
@TheRenamedException yeah!
Special brownies are nasty though

@RebeccaChernoff Sorry, I do not understand what you mean here

I ate more than I should have once, and have never since

Hmm, may be getting time to replace the wireless keyboard batteries.

@Pekka College was a long time ago... That's all I have to say on this topic LOL
;-)
@RebeccaChernoff this round as in, this round of elections?

8:54 PM
in the set of 3: cooking/photo/webmasters

@RebeccaChernoff You probably wore them out with all your Dvorak usage; it's well established that Dvorak burns through batteries 2-3 times faster than qwerty

@TheRenamedException yeah, same for me. Although I'm occasionally thinking about trying again! We shall see.

@MichaelMrozek bull.

@Pekka college, or brownies? or, actually, we should probably cut this conversation out, LOL

@TheRenamedException brownies! :) Never been to college.
@TheRenamedException long enough ago to be of no legal consequence any more :)

8:56 PM
@Pekka You probably didn't miss much, my favorite part of college was the special brownies anyway ;-)

@TheRenamedException hahahahaha

(Either people aren't paying attention to us, or everyone is out of stars for the day... or maybe I just don't know you people, lol)

Yeah I don't know you people anymore!

By the way, I discovered a starring bug, but ssshhh
you can star messages in private rooms you're not invited in
