D'oh.

oooh, Balsamiq Mockups 2 -- eh, nevermind, it's been around for a while now.

Hm, mail to team@ coming up :)

Hmm...I wonder if that excludes items made for personal use?

take rcherns permission ;)

@GeorgeMarian, I'm guessing it does, but it doesn't cost much to send a mail to ask.

12:04 PM
@Benjol See dl.dropbox.com/u/2332843/garden/index.html in Chrome again, does it still exhibit the same problem?

@YiJiang :(

Erm... ctrl + f5? No effect? Damn...

sorry. doesn't seem to have made any difference

Ah well, will try something else.

@Benjol stackauth has all the logo paths

12:08 PM
@MarcGravell, not really big enough for a t-shirt though :) svg is the way to go, I guess

Hmm...I wonder if this is @RebeccaChernoff's old job I'm seeing floating through corp-corp.com. It's rather light on the details though. What was her old job anyway? I know she codes in JavaScript.

@Reno Really?

@Reno do not want

i know right :D
im so happy i dont have an account on both

12:13 PM
meh, Twitter isn't that bad.

Meh, I've found both to have their uses.

so I guess having Gaming's heart on my Minecraft skin is a problem? :|
1
Q: Gaming.SE Minecraft skin

badpTo celebrate Fosco's moment of madness that lead to me really owning Minecraft, I've quickly made a Gaming/Minecraft skin for you to use. Download the skin. The skin is available also in .xcf version, should you want to tweak it (say, move the heart to the back, reduce the heart's o...

@Benjol methinks thats for apparel manufacturers

@Reno, me to, but IANAL :)
Anyways, if I can just work out how to convert this svg to a png without downloading and installing too much 'stuff', I'll be well on my way.

12:17 PM
@Benjol The GIMP supports svg.

Your browser supports SVG ;)

Will that convert it to png? :P

Well, not if your browser is IE, but heck, those aren't really browsers anyway
@GeorgeMarian Take screenshot, crop. Yeah, I'm lazy

.svg links won't onebox automatically, but they will if you force them to (!http://foo/bar.svg)

12:19 PM
@YiJiang, that, sir, is a smart idea. Though I'm limited in zoom to about 180-ish pixels

@YiJiang For some reason that makes me think of taking a picture of printout...ala TDWTF.

ah, Web 0.1, those were the days.

@Benjol Only? Surely you can zoom more if you want to

Hmm...I wonder why Pidgin is reporting me as having been idle for over 9 hours...

12:22 PM
now hold ctrl-+
(press ctrl-0 to go back)

I did, though in a page on its own. you get to about 200px and it stops zooming - on my machine anyway

Or, ctrl+scrollwheel

@Benjol You're right, weird. Firefox seems to have some arbitrary limit set in place

@Benjol yes, that's because browsers will only zoom in so far

@YiJiang, chrome too

12:23 PM
yup

Damn, plan foiled :(

@YiJiang, nice try anyways.
Next up - hacking the svg directly :)

new plan: right click image, 'open in inspector', add style: height: 500px; width: 500px: to the HTML.
bonus points if you tick off the max-height and max-width rules :P
after you do that, you can Ctrl-+!
and bring the zoomination to 11

It looks like it just changes the overall size, but doesn't scale the logo. That or I'm doing something wrong :)

Hello everyone.

12:28 PM
'ello

@AidenBell Hola.

now you could take that image and zoom into it, but it's no svg sadly :(
you can click for original size though :P

@GeorgeMarian hello sir

@AidenBell There was some Python related question I had wanted to ask you a while ago, but heck if I know what it is now.

@GeorgeMarian - lol, not been around these parts for a while

12:31 PM
@AidenBell How could you stay away? ;)

@GeorgeMarian - it was a struggle, and I cried myself to sleep most nights

@GeorgeMarian - off to get android SDK to play nice, if that question comes back to you, give me a shout ;)

Greetings

@AidenBell Will do. Have fun!
@AndyFugard Greetings.

12:35 PM
@AidenBell i dabble in android too

Do you guys have any thoughts on this: http://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/74738/recruiting-participants-on-stack-overflow-for-an-empirical-study ?
Playing it gently lest I suffer the wrath of the entire community (hell hath no fury like a software developer scorned, or something)

@AndyFugard, I guess you could do worse than try on programmers, slightly more tolerant there...
The problem with chat is that at any one time you're only likely to reach around 10 people - in the post busy rooms (at this time of day, anyway)

@AndyFugard trustworthiness.. um are you talking about code ?

@Andy best of luck with your research btw.

12:39 PM
as in trusting someone elses code

@Reno :-) well let's see what people talk about... yes trust of code and/or the people who wrote it
@radp Thanks!

user image

@Reno :-)

Dang it. I really like Feedly, but gray on white is a pain to read.
@Reno Nice.

@Reno Do you currently work as a professional software developer?

12:41 PM
Yeah i do

@Reno Excellent! If you'd like to chat then, just send me an email to andy.fugard [at] sbg.ac.at and we'll set it up from there

sure , i'll follow your questions on Programmers

The number isn't a big problem at this stage - want initial impressions to start with, so it really will just be a chat
Thanks for the pointer!

@AndyFugard Why does it have to be current? (i.e. are the unemployed developer's opinions not valid?)

thats the place to start

12:45 PM
@GeorgeMarian The main issue is time - it'll be retrospective, which is already a problem in terms of remembering reasons for decisions. So unemployed would be fine so long as not too long ago.
@Reno The interviews would be via Skype, phone, or email - not public
@Reno (Or in person, if you're around Austria!)

@AndyFugard I see your point. However, how detailed do you believe this information will be? How many different reasons can there be? How much detail can they give you without it being problematic for them? I can certainly see why you wouldn't want to be interviewing hobby programmers.

@AndyFugard, I think if you want more than a handful of people, your best bet is to ask that question somewhere like programmers, providing a couple of dates/times when you'll be hanging on a chat. Then they can come and ask you questions to see if they're interested.

@GeorgeMarian These are all good questions. The issue of detail, number of reasons, etc, will vary depending very much on the context, of course... Concerning confidentiality, we have strict guidelines on this, which will be explained should participants agree to assist us.

@AndyFugard, the biggest deciding factor will be TIME, how long will this take. And time ZONES I guess too.

@AndyFugard What about opening a chat room for this?
Just an idea, I have no idea how well that will go down with the community
That way, everyone could answer the questions whenever they please
Assuming it's a limited number of questions. How many would they be, and what kind? Multiple choice, or more prose?

12:56 PM
@Pekka Well, that's where email would come in. I sure wouldn't want to pick through all of those answers in a chat room, unless it was an interview.

And there's not much confidentiality in a SO chat room :)

@GeorgeMarian yeah, it would have to be in one bloclk
@Benjol good point too

@Pekka I like the chatroom idea, though the problem is that everyone would be able to read each other's answers. Initially it will be a semi-structured interview with open questions. This will feed into iteratively more refined questionnaires which we can distribute via clicky-box-style web forms. But a little way to go before we get that far!
@Benjol Indeed...

@Pekka There's a limit to the size of the chant messages. I ran into that tonight. Surprisingly, for the first time.

@AndyFugard I see. Confidentiality is definitely an issue of course

12:58 PM
@AndyFugard If your budget allows it the single best way to do the last step would be an ad :)

@GeorgeMarian what is the limit?

@Pekka Heck if I know, a bit more than the size of the input area.

I don't know who's in charge of SO ads anymore. It used to be Alex Papadimoulis, but it probably isn't anymore.

@radp, even the SO survey only got 2800 respondents. Not much as a percentage of daily visitors...

@Benjol Nothing to sneeze at either.

12:59 PM
@Pekka Well, the default size.

@GeorgeMarian Solution: Shift-Enter
(you need to give up formatting then, though)

@radp Eh?
That'll circumvent the limit?

If you put in multiple lines, the length limit is waived.

However, the transcript may not show your message in full, for some reason.

1:01 PM
@radp Hmm...that's kinda janky.
Well, so much for there being a lot of activity on corp-corp.com. I do believe it has picked up a bit, but there is still a lot of reposting. Grrr.

...I just tried reproducing in Sandbox and couldn't.

@radp Sounds like a good plan - will keep in mind!

@radp LOL
I need a freaking printer.

@GeorgeMarian buy a Lexmark! The printer is cheaper than its own cartridges!
When the printer's out of ink, you buy a new printer. Couldn't be simpler!

1:10 PM
Hmm...after the my experience with a sub $100 dollar HP, I'm a little wary of cheap printers.

Yeah, I wasn't being serious.

@radp The environmental engineer in me would frown on that.

I've got a B&W laser printer - so far, after about 4 years of not-very-frequent use, the toner hadn't needed replacing yet

For a moment I read "I've got a BMW laser printer"

Yeah, I've wanted to buy a laser printer for a while. The budget doesn't allow it, currently.

1:14 PM
print stuff at a typing office, use budget of this and next year for a laser :P

@radp Over priced, with poor snow handling?

(again, I'm not serious; while it might work hefty markups say it probably won't)

heh
I can print at friend's house, when necessary. It's just not every convenient, especially for things like dilbert, xkcd, etc.

@GeorgeMarian, get it printed on a t-shirt :)

1:24 PM
@Pekka Silly question: HOW does one setup a chatroom? My reputation is at floor as I just joined - is that what's stopping me?

@AndyFugard You need 100 reps

@YiJiang Crikey

Odd. It's supposedly gotten warmer outside, yet I feel a bit colder.

@AndyFugard, you're almost half way there :)

@Benjol :-) Not on the main site, I'm not - and I guess the chat rooms are separate

1:37 PM
@AndyFugard, yes, Stackoverflow and meta have separate rep

@AndyFugard whatever you do, it might be a good idea to show people beforehand the number of questions they have to expect. Most developers have little time, so their willingness will depend on the size of the questionnaire

@Pekka, and they're lazy :)
The only way to get them to work is to show them something shiny. Or feed them waffles. Or bacon.

@Benjol Bacon is for Jin. The rest of us will happily accept waffles.

Request forwarded:
> Know a good link to give to a service who just sent you your plain text password in an unencrypted e-mail after password recovery? A short horror story would be good.

@YiJiang I'd accept both.

1:50 PM
Jeff had a blog post for that, or several

Or, I guess, either.
Dang it. Now I wish I had waffles. Thanks @YiJiang
2

@GeorgeMarian You're welcome ;)

@GeorgeMarian I think I never had waffles, if it brightens your day.

@radp Really?

@radp Ever? (Gasps)

1:53 PM
Aren't they supposed to be a breakfast thing?

They're good any time, but they're traditionally a breakfast thing.

Not really, no. I can have them at any time I want, the local bakery has waffle irons

Yeah, well, breakfast here is a cup of milk. If you're feeling fancy add cereals.
I guess this doesn't count as waffles though:
(the lower half I mean)

So, have you ever had pancakes? Bacon and eggs?

@radp Erm... no. Those are just ice-cream cones

1:56 PM
Bacon and eggs, maybe once in an hotel
pancakes as shown on Google Images, never.

@radp, you poor poor soul, all your life and just that crummy italian food :)

Hey, pasta is awesome. =)

i don't know what to say. I'm actually...speechless.

@GeorgeMarian Yeah, how could someone not ever have had waffles?

Or (some kind of) bacon and eggs.

1:59 PM
By the way I think this applies to most Italians. They just don't fit our breakfasts and aren't, erm, good enough to be had on their own at lunch.

@radp By the way, note that there are waffles, and then there are gaufres, if you've got a choice, try the latter
@radp, you stuffy lot, you have to wait for mealtimes to eat? :)

@radp Well, most (I think all) people here won't ever had Youtiao or Cantonese style porridge for breakfast either, but still

@Benjol Nah, we do import junk food :P

Youtiaos are brilliant. Strangely, some moron went and stuck the 'Doughnut' template at the bottom of the Wikipedia page for youtiao. They're not in anyway related to doughnuts, erm... right?

@YiJiang Dough, fried in oil.

2:07 PM
@Benjol I just confirmed gaufres are those used to make ice cream cones.
At least, here in Italy.

@GeorgeMarian Oh, is that the definition of a doughnut?

Sure, they're much thinner and have nothing on top.

@radp, I think it's probably a terminology thing. In French "gauffré" is the 'square holes' shape
so that can apply to either.

@YiJiang Yeah, pretty much. Though, we tend to think of doughnuts as sweet.
A doughnut or donut (, ) is a type of fried dough food popular in many countries and prepared in various forms as a sweet (or occasionally savory) snack that can be homemade or purchased in bakeries, supermarkets, food stalls, and franchised specialty outlets. They are usually sweet, deep-fried from a flour dough, and shaped in rings or flattened spheres that sometimes contain fillings. Other types of dough such as potato can also be used as well as other batters, and various toppings and flavorings are used for different types. The two most common types are the toroidal ring doughnut ...

@GeorgeMarian, and I think of them filled with Jam, and without a hole :)

2:10 PM
Anyway, yes, the Italian Wikipedia confirms waffles and pancakes are not part of Italian cuisine.

@radp, correction "gaufrer: to emboss, to crinkle", so it's even more generic

This discussion has me craving my grandma's "doughnuts." Which are kinda diamond shaped and twisted through themselves. Well, when she gets fancy with it.

Although there's something kind of like pancakes in Tuscany. I've never been there however.

I wonder, how do crappy recruiters stay employed/in-business? Is it a numbers game?

oooh, Google Traffic now also available in Europe.

2:13 PM
@radp you ought to, Bistecca alla Fiorentina, yum :)

@Benjol Oh, I've had Fiorentinas :)
Well, yes, I've been in Florence. Twice. I guess then I just didn't try the local version of pancakes.

You just have to get used to the 'accent' ("andiamo a la hasa") :)

I must admit, I've never had pancakes before living in the states. But, we did eat plenty of crepes.

Crepes are delicious.

Yes, yes they are. And all this talk of food does nothing to relieve my hunger.

2:15 PM
XO sauce is a spicy seafood sauce used in Chinese cuisines especially in southern China such as Guangdong province and Hong Kong. History It was developed in the 1980s in Hong Kong for Cantonese cuisine. The sauce is made of roughly chopped dried seafoods, such as scallop, dried fish and shrimp that has been cooked with chilli, onion, garlic and oil. Once a prestigious concoction confined to gourmet seafood restaurants, XO sauce can now be found as a pre-made product on grocery stores shelves, produced by Asian food companies like Lee Kum Kee, ANJI, and Amoy. Etymology The name XO sauce...
Isn't it amazing that these sauces don't actually contain any XO?

Crepes, I've eaten those.
Usually with nutella. :P

@GeorgeMarian, this might help to cut your appetite :)

Q: Chocolate and Garlic

Neil FeinI hosted a potluck dinner some years ago, and I set the theme as "chocolate or garlic" -- guests were to bring one or the other. One person was a wiseacre and bought chocolate covered garlic. (It was hideously unpalatable.) I've since wondered if there's any way to combine chocolate and garlic ...

@radp Oh my goodness. You know of Nutella? It's a miracle! ;)

Speaking of cutting appetite
@GeorgeMarian har har har :P

@radp sugar and lemon for me :)

2:17 PM

It's almost as funny as the Singapore Fried Rice they sell everywhere but Singapore

@Benjol Interesting. I would never think to try to combine those two.
Now, chocolate and bacon, that's a different story.

I had a cheessteak crepe a few months ago, that was awesome.

@radp I did wonder whether that question had inspired him :)

Also, to be fair, while I don't usually eat eggs and bacon, I do eat eggs and bacon on pasta. I guess that's why "just eggs and bacon" doesn't cut it for me.

2:19 PM
Hmm...never had meat in a crepe. But, cheese a plenty.

@GeorgeMarian yeah, sounds about as bad as blue cheese and honey to me

If you really want to lose your appetite, I've got a few ahem interesting dishes they serve here. Probably not as bad as haggis, but hrm...

@YiJiang Did you mean... Huggies?

By the way, for your general culture, UK pancakes are closer to crepes than US pancakes: images.google.com/images?q=english+pancakes

@radp I'm not a big fan of pasta. Certain dishes I love, but not pasta in general.
Haggis is a dish containing sheep's 'pluck' (heart, liver and lungs), minced with onion, oatmeal, suet, spices, and salt, mixed with stock, and traditionally simmered in the animal's stomach for approximately three hours. Most modern commercial haggis is prepared in a casing rather than an actual stomach. Haggis is a kind of sausage, or savoury pudding cooked in a casing of sheep's intestine, as many sausages are. As the 2001 English edition of the Larousse Gastronomique puts it, "Although its description is not immediately appealing, haggis has an excellent nutty texture and delicious...

2:21 PM
@GeorgeMarian, remind me to remind you not to go to Italy :) Pasta is Italy's rice

@GeorgeMarian Fair enough, just sometimes I wonder how do you keep variety without it.

@GeorgeMarian It's pretty good. A friend took me to a place on UPenn's campus that serves them and I was pleasantly surprised.

@Benjol And rice is... China's rice

Rice is a godsend.

@GeorgeMarian I mean, usually I eat pasta once a day with the other meal being either eggs meat or fish.

2:22 PM
@radp Variety, w/o pasta?
I don't understand.

@TimStone Once you're eating it everyday, you don't really value rice anymore

I have a hard time seeing much variety with pasta.

I almost always eat noodles outside because... well, rice is cheap.

@radp erm, you're going to have to rephrase that one...

@radp So, what's your definition of variety?

2:24 PM
@YiJiang shrugs Rice is my side dish of choice for most meals. :P

@GeorgeMarian Ricotta; Pesto; Salmon; Crumb; Carbonara; Garlic and pepper; Seafood; Mushrooms; ...
@GeorgeMarian I guess it isn't meat all the time :)

@TimStone Side dish you say? :P I go through several bowls each day.

Ah, I don't eat quite that much. I normally go half seafood, half rice.

@radp Ah, ok. We eat a lot of meat in the states. :)

I had an awesome burger yesterday, from Five Guys

2:26 PM
@Fosco I've never tried one, but I hear they're great.
Wish there was In and Out Burger up here. I'm on the right coast for it, but I don't think there are any in WA.

I haven't had one of those (Five Guys burger) in a really long time, heh.

BTW if I had owner and this was on SE, I would've migrated this to the Cooking chatroom half an hour ago :P

42 mins ago, by Benjol
@Pekka, and they're lazy :)
That is an appalling allegation.

@GeorgeMarian Haggis is delish - (lived in Scotland for 4 years)

...so you should be glad neither applies I guess.

2:27 PM
I'd like to see some proof of that before I believe one bit of it
Outrageous

Speaking of something I haven't had a while, I have a hankering for some good stuffed cabbage.

@Pekka I could but I don't care enough to.
3

@radp ahahaha

I just woke up and you all are tempting me with food! For shame.

@GeorgeMarian I don't know about you, but I don't usually stuff my cabbage with anything

2:29 PM
@TimStone What are we trading sleep schedules here? ;)

@TimStone Again, it could be worse, you could be Italian and all your breakfast would be a cup of milk. :P

Is that what happened? I was wondering why I passed out at a little past two last night.
@radp My breakfast is generally nothing, heh.

(Maybe toasted bread with butter and marmalade if you're feeling that fancy.)
@TimStone Bad boy.

@radp That would be criminal! Though I'm not an average Singaporean
Most of them don't have anything. I tend to disagree, and stuff myself before going to school.

@YiJiang It has the great advantage of being consumed in approximately five seconds. This means extra sleeping time, or at least having to work harder for finding an excuse to not have breakfast in the morning. :P

2:31 PM
@YiJiang It's a Romanian staple. Meat, rice, some tomato sauce, and I'm not sure what else. They're delicious. Especially with pickled cabbage.
@TimStone I went to bed at 5 AM and woke up at 3 PM. I trying to just stay up and this point to get back on track. It's already failed once this week. lol

@radp I usually get muffins from the local bakery for breakfast. One is usually enough, though I think I can stuff down two if I wanted.
Oh, and together with milk, of course

Good morning everyone

@GeorgeMarian In that case perhaps you have borrowed my sleep schedule, and then some, hahah. That's rough though, hopefully you can even things out.

@YiJiang Yeah, I could do that on Sundays.

A cabbage roll (also stuffed cabbage or Hungarian pigs in a blanket) is a dish consisting of cooked cabbage leaves wrapped around a variety of fillings. It is common to the ethnic cuisines of Europe and Western Asia, and has also found popularity in areas of North America settled by Eastern Europeans. The filling is traditionally based around meat, often beef, lamb or pork and is seasoned with garlic, onion and spices. Grains such as rice and barley, eggs, mushrooms and vegetables are often included in the filling as well. Pickled cabbage leaves are often used for wrapping, particularly...

2:34 PM
If Chacha was here he would do this:

Dunno about "Hungarian pigs in a blanket" but pork is typically used, so I guess it works.
@YiJiang heh...no hot linking.

@GeorgeMarian Odd, I can see it. Caching, eh.

@YiJiang Yup.
I had this girlfriend who had an incredibly fat cat. It went on a forced diet, because it was too scared of a new cat (which eventually became my cat). It ended up sweeping the floor with the flap of skin which hung to the floor.

@YiJiang Mmmmm mufffins...

@GeorgeMarian lmao. I was going to pull up a picture of the cat we had at our apartment when I was in university, but I think that wins hands down. :P

2:39 PM
@TimStone It was hilarious to see it run across the kitchen.

Morning.

@Moshe Yeah, I guess it is morning.

Can anyone test: dl.dropbox.com/u/1722364/Garden/garden.html for Chrome on Windows

@YiJiang, better. much

@Benjol Screenie?

2:46 PM
Anyone here have close powers on SF?

right menu not like it was before though

@Benjol Eh... hard refresh there. I don't think that's the latest version...

Rats, sorry :(
I take back what I said then... still pretty much the same

Ouch, okay, this sucks.

2:49 PM
@Josh @Zypher is here, summoned by your calls of SF :P

haha

He also has a flag ;-)
How goes @Zypher?

@GeorgeMarian oh man, a Romanian friend used to make these all the time. Want!!!!!1

hanging in there ... happy i only had to spend like 5 mins on jersey roads today
god they have to learn how to plow

I'll bet, I hear they're nasty

2:51 PM
@Benjol Okay, how about now? (Hard refresh please)

everything was fine until i got off route 1 in jersey ... even the small back road was nicely plowed in pa
but jersey uhg

@Pekka I've been trying to get my mom to write down her recipes. Not that she doesn't want to share them, but she measures by eye.

just another reason i hate jersey

@YiJiang, no difference as far as I can see, sorry

@GeorgeMarian yeah, there are so many treasures in the older generations, it's definitely worth trying to document them!

2:52 PM
@YiJiang, I'm leaving soon too...

Sigh... it's okay, lemme see if I can reboot into Windows

@Pekka Yah, I'm not very hopeful that I'll find a woman that can cook as well in here America. :D
So, I need to take matter into my own hands.

@GeorgeMarian Yeah! :)
Do you have eastern european roots then?

My gf cooks more than I do, but still admits that I cook much better than she does.
@Pekka That I do, Romanian & Hungarian.

@GeorgeMarian aha! Nice. Where did you grow up?

2:56 PM
@Pekka All over the place. Born in Romania. I grew up in New York (both the city and the state).

@GeorgeMarian right! Interesting.

bye folks....

@Benjol bye!

@Benjol Later!

@Benjol c'ya

Err...umm....for what definition of "now?"

You might've seen this.

So what's the best way to deal with asshole answerers with high rep posting nearly useless answers and trying to defend their practice by saing "I have high rep, I know what I'm doing" again? I know that there was a meta on it somewhere, or am I just hallucinating again?
