4:00 PM
Hm, it might have been deleted.
checks history
Ah, yep.
But the title is actually "PLZ EXPLAIN THIS CODE"

@drachenstern A classic, but there are now far too many answers on it.

As I said, just for kicks

@TimStone Oh, ha. I do remember that one, now.

Remind me to never allow myself to write a Swing GUI again.
This code is..horrendous.

@TimStone Please don't say that. I'm just starting my first Swing project.

4:04 PM
Well, your code doesn't have to be terrible. Just...don't do things like I apparently did. ;)
Also, if you have the choice, use MigLayout, as it is great and does all things, like the jQuery of Swing.

@TimStone I was dangerously close to flagging that for being an actual, legitimately useful message, but then I saw the jQuery reference. Thanks for the rec!

The guy who wrote it happens to also be a Swedish fighter pilot, so you know things are starting out on an awesome foot.
Hm, somewhere within these 1.8K lines of code is the text box I want to change..

@TimStone does your interface language not have handy things like .Text = that you could grep on?

The GUI is hand-written, and I couldn't remember what the field was called. :P
But I found it.

4:16 PM
Wow, that's pretty coincidental.
> "It just happened. It really did. It is a huge coincidence, but it just worked out that way," said Lee.
"Nah, we waited. Wanted to time it right. Figured we'd go for the buzzer beater"

> "I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of rootkits suddenly cried out in terror."
ooooh, OBing /. posts ... interesting concept

Hahah

> No, "obligatory" is not a synonym for "predictable" or "unfunny." Cut it out.

And wow, really? They couldn't even correct the title of that post?

Yeah I noticed that

4:18 PM
Slashdot commenters -- always a paragon of civility

go kill ten minutes htwins.net/scale

it saddens me to see that he forgot the turtles :(

I wonder if this is the right place to do A/B testing, but here goes... dl.dropbox.com/u/1722364/Garden/garden.html - click on the small 'White Background, Black Font' button at the bottom of the nav bar, ignore the nav

@TimStone Slashdot articles being edited are pretty rare.
@YiJiang I prefer the original colour scheme personally.
@YiJiang Also nice work on the nav I'm ignoring.

4:35 PM
@YiJiang what's the A/B test? Which do we prefer? I like elements of both. I think the code highlights getting darker is "bad"

@YiJiang I prefer the colored background version. Also, the nav transitions are cool, even though you said to ignore the nav. =P

@YiJiang article code's font-size rule should be relative -- see "The length property"
(also, I personally already had adjusted the default size for code fonts, so the page looks fine for me without that rule :P)
obviously not something you can assume of the internet at large.

GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH
seriously? What do I have to do, regex on the server?
the server gets etss\\cbrand

@radp What do you mean by that?

@YiJiang article code and article h3 code are both large the same.
One example of article h3 code is that header I quoted.

4:49 PM
@drachenstern that's awesome

just wish it were mine :p

5:11 PM
@drachenstern Sweet
Vector graphics FTW!
I feel like I'm in Brainstorm, LOL
Brainstorm is a 1983 science fiction film directed by Douglas Trumbull and starring Christopher Walken and Natalie Wood (in her last film appearance). Plot A team of scientists invents "The Hat", a helmet that allows sensations to be read from a person's brain and written to tape so that others can experience them. The team includes estranged husband-and-wife, Michael and Karen Brace (Walken and Wood), and Michael's colleague Lillian Reynolds (Fletcher). The team demonstrates the device and gains financing for more development. One of the team members creates a "sex tape," which he ...

whoa, I'll have to get that ... thanks

Classic computer sci-fi movie. Filmed here in RTP if I'm not mistaken...
Yeah:

Oh, the survey results were released!
I was supposed to have gotten an email!

5:30 PM
@Josh me too
:(

Wow, Web Application Developer beat out all other occupations by a whopping margin. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised by that, but the difference (40.3% vs 15% for Desktop Developer) seems larger than I expected
@drachenstern Link's on the blog
Posted by Alison Sperling on January 11th, 2011

In December we launched the Stack Overflow Annual User Survey in order to measure the user demographics that Google Analytics can’t provide us with. Finding out the user demographics became necessary due to the growth that Stack Overflow had in 2010.

Of the 2,813 surveys started, 2,532 were completed, for a completion rate of 90%!  Thank you to everyone who participated.

Now, for some interesting facts ripped from the headlines:

Job Satisfaction ReadWriteWeb reported that according to a Gartner analyst, more than 1/3 of IT professionals are interested in switching jobs. …

Wow. I just posted a "Hi new user, this is a dupe" comment and OP deleted the question before I could vote to close.

Hmmm... do you guys prefer serif body font or sans body font? dl.dropbox.com/u/1722364/Garden/garden.html Second option in the bottom nav thingy

@PopularDemand Wow, a new user with respect? jaw drops

I kinda wish I had a way to tell him that it's okay to have occasional dupes with different wording.

5:31 PM
(j/k)

@YiJiang again, I prefer the default.
@PopularDemand "see also ..." "related question: ..." "similar question: ..."

choose a different font for the sans, the current sans is not as nice as the current serif

@radp ?

Yesterday I saw a new user who posted a non-answer. Someone commented that this is not how Stack Overflow works; he should have edited his question instead. And you know what? He actually did!

@MichaelMyers Screenshot, or it didn't happen!

5:33 PM
@drachenstern Erm... it's Arial. You're not on OS X by any chance?

@PopularDemand That is, choose a different wording that doesn't match the close reason

I'm not

... I wish I remembered who commented on it.

@MichaelMyers link so we can upvote the noob
2

scratch head seriously? Arial not looking good?

5:34 PM
To @MichaelMyers's activity list!

Just a drive by post to advertise a 2nd hand 'Happy Hacking Keyboard Lite II' for sale in the UK (see stackoverflow.com/questions/687/keyboard-for-programmers/…) - 50 squid o.n.o. black with markings ...

I didn't take any action because none was necessary, so I don't know if I can find it.

not to me, not in this case, too narrow
the spacing is wildly different on the letters
(comparing sans to serif)

Wow only 7.7% of users surveyed are developing SaaS projects. That really surprises me given that 40.3% are web application developers!

@drachenstern Not possible, hmmm... You're on Windows, right? Not using Chrome, yes?

5:35 PM
I guess I'm in the minority there!

I am using chrome
If my product gets installed on their server does that make it a SaaS?

@drachenstern Try using something else, we're still trying to work around a Chrome bug

I figured the SaaS were Amazon EC3 etc

Apropos of nothing, I finally got around to installing the For the Glory demo. It looks... involved.

@YiJiang oh, mkay.

5:36 PM
Though it shouldn't have anything to do with letter kerning

@drachenstern No.
@drachenstern My company develops SaaS. Our customers pay us a monthly fee in order to use our software
I.E. it's hosted on our servers, you can't install it on your server
Like Salesforce.com

Need to sleep, gosh it's bloody late. Bye guys, though still ping me with your comments on that page, yawn

@YiJiang Goodnight!

@Josh yeah ours doesn't fall into that
@YiJiang oh dear, I was about to upload an image, ttyt
I prefer the one on the left

HA! Looks like only 16 other cool kids besides myself took the survey! Only 0.7% of us call Meta our favorite place XD

5:39 PM
@Josh I was wondering who the 17 sad people were.

@MichaelMyers 16 more to discover ;-)

@Josh And they -- I mean, we -- all hang out -- wait, no, I did mean "they" -- here in The Tavern.

@Josh I think I answered SO, and then realized that was actually very wrong. :P

LOL

"Chat" wasn't a choice, was it?

5:41 PM
Yeah I figured chat counts, so my Meta time far exceeds any other site now, LOL

@MichaelMyers I don't think so ... and was that survey before I started hanging out here? :p

@MichaelMyers Nope. But since this is Meta chat I counted it as Meta
@drachenstern I don't think so, I took it in December

So Josh I remember what I was gonna ask you about the movie you posted earlier, is it anything like Primer?

@drachenstern It appeared in advertisements on SO, in a post on Meta (I think), and also in a blog post. :P

oh I took it, I just forgot when it was out
notice the overly inflated stats for LA :p

5:42 PM
Oh, hahah

we are an important cross section OBVIOUSLY

I was actually quite surprised by the number of people who responded from my state, heh

(actually I think it just happened that the owner had a home here because we have a second office of nearly comparable size in Austin)

I thought there'd be more from NC!

CSS was an option on "languages"?
>_>

5:46 PM
So was SQL! >:o
@TimStone Because it was so low or so high?

@Josh It was higher than I expected. ;)

if everyone knows SQL why is dba.SE getting so little love? :p

Actually, CSS deserves to be treated a little bit more like a programming language. People tend to say "meh, just copy/paste/type/delete/rinse/repeat/add "!important" until it works. If CSS was treated more like code, it would make working with it a little easier.

@balpha and if it was treated more like a design language then people might understand it's about layout and treat it differently too :p

@balpha When people start treating CSS like code, you get people who assign a unique class to each element.
@drachenstern Because there are only 23 DBAs :P

5:49 PM
lmao

WTF?

23? why the clarification?
wtf wtw?

interesting behavior, I cannot repro ...

/blames @balpha

5:51 PM
damnit, one upvote from a "Nice answer" 10+ badge :(
ah well
in other news by staying off dba.SE I jumped up 10 spots yesterday :S

@drachenstern Just going by the survey :P

@TimStone I just can't figure out where you are, LOL
ok headed to lunch, bbl!

my boss has magic powers
he knows that I posted an out of date version of the software when I cloned it from the hg head

@Josh I know. Conveniently that response covers all of the applicable states.

of a week ago ... seriously, what's outdated?
I should run a directory diff on the old source and the just downloaded head version
for the record, there is one difference in one file in the whole effing project
> you posted an outdated vs of PRODUCTNAME please post the latest ... thanks
GAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH WTF

6:05 PM
Hey, user profiles have tag scores now.

@PopularDemand queue the meta on those have hand cursors and they're not actionable
or should I go ahead and put it up so it's a matter of record?

@drachenstern It's all you!

Q: Mouse pointer turns to hand icon on tag score [Profile Page]

drachensternRELATED Mouse pointer turns to hand icon on favorite icon [Profile Page] User profiles page now includes tag scores, the score turns to a hand on hover. It's not an actionable item. I figure if we're tracking one we're tracking another.

6:25 PM
@shog, let me know when you drop in

@radp In case you're interest I can give you commit access to the garden repo

@IvoWetzel I suck at Javascript :)
I belong to your audience more than anything

@radp I suck at writing :D No really, I could need some help there, YiJiang already did some copy editing here and there but he's mainly focused on the stylesheet of the resulting website

6:42 PM

Just dropped in to agree that Ivo sucks at writing

lmao
@Shog9 see :447940

@Shog9 !

@IvoWetzel!
@LanceRoberts Oddly enough, this didn't push a notification to the SupercolliderDropdownMadnessConglamorator
@balpha, your code sucks
(who else can I annoy... Hmm...)

Once again... I think kitten should join the tavern

6:45 PM
...

@Shog9 What my code does in its free time is none of my business
3

@Shog9 because you hadn't been here in a while or you logged out

@IvoWetzel I object. (:

if anything deserves a star ...

@drachenstern well, that's lame

6:46 PM
@RebeccaChernoff Don't worry, it will stay in the tavern to provide us with programming quotes

@Shog9 I didn't write the code ;)
In other news: LUNCH
:p

Just finished breakfast!

says the salaried employee who doesn't really adhere to a "lunch schedule"

(waffles, with blackberry syrup)

Yeah, really don't think we need that bot in here.

6:47 PM
@drachenstern No, it's because it hadn't gone unacknowledged long enough to get pushed to the multicollider. :P

We need Welbog to port Kevbot to Chat.SO

oh lord, a newb EVEN on MSO? What is the world coming to? ...

Q: How do I add code while writing comments?

CHIDHow do I add code while writing comments and how do I enter a newline character?

@TimStone are you sure? Mine seem to hit the collider pretty quick
check the comments on the post ... hmmm

Yes.

@TimStone but it was at least twenty minutes, no? ... I'll have to time those in the future

oooo
:( i was hoping for hardware pics

6:52 PM
@Zypher Me too :(
Oh employees, interrupting my Forza playing..

comment flags in 10k tools has reintroduced me to the illustrious Col. Shrapnel.

Ah so close! I only need +3 before I can edit on SF!

@MichaelPetrotta Don't you feel so fortunate?

ever so.

Josh link me to something ;)

6:56 PM
@MichaelPetrotta So you're telling me that it's a bad thing reaching 10k nowadays? :P

#VotingRing what where?

@drachenstern Ring? I thought it was called the voting Mafia (at least over in the JS room)

@Ivo: only if you've got a bit of OCD, like me. "There's something wrong on SO, I must fix it!"

@MichaelPetrotta :(

Oh yeah Ivo, you're getting kind of close there, huh?

6:59 PM
Anyways I should answer some JS question instead of rewriting the guide...

@IvoWetzel The mafia is a different creature:
10
A: The Many Memes of Meta

Jon BMeme: SO Mafia Originator: Unknown Cultural Height: Throughout 2009 Background: Originally known as the TDWTF Mafia, the SO Mafia is a group of users led by HE WHO SHALL NOT BE NAMED who hang around on IRC (#somafia on slashnet) deciding which users get to live or die. @PopularDemand Yea, but that's the SO Mafia, I was talking about the voting Mafia

@IvoWetzel Bah. There isn't enough room for two mafias here.
@IvoWetzel As for your reaching 10k question...
3
Q: Has anyone out there tried to stop gaining rep so as to not surpass 10k?

Popular DemandI recently discovered, or possibly rediscovered, that all deleted items are "forced-visible to all 10k users all the time." I never considered rep gain to be something with a downside before, especially because there's no way to directly message a non-diamond 10k user to ask for something to be ...

Not without a protection fee at least

What's up with this auto completion?
Typing @ P <tab> results in "Josh"

7:02 PM
@ P

status-no-repro

Nope...

@Ivo: nope, I see Pop

Now it only gives me Pekka... strange
Maybe an issues with the latest FX Nightly who knows

@drachenstern sorry boss in office BRB

7:04 PM
Can the mafia help me "remove" MichaelMyers and MichaelMrozek? I'd prefer to be the only Michael here.
too much notification spam

@MichaelPetrotta Who's got the blue name here?

oh, CRAP! runs for cover

@MichaelPetrotta You may want to talk to Marco Gravell.

@Shog9, It turns out the fix didn't work for Agent Ransack, the config file had already been set right. I took a screenshot, but forgot too bring the stick it's on to post it.
@Shog9, On the thin client issue, one other point is that if the network goes down, then everyone is unable to work, instead of just those who need network data.

@LanceRoberts yeah, it's a trade-off.
save some maintenance headaches, at the cost of proper maintenance being that much more important.

7:11 PM
@Josh it's ok, I'm on mobile safari
@Popular - I see what you did on MSO ;)

Thanks @drachenstern!
Now it's time to clean up serverfault!!

7:33 PM
Does anyone know what "PADSS" means?
My boss just asked me, said someone asked if we were PCI compliant and they said that no, they meant PADDS compliant

Errm
PCIDSS is the Full abbreviation of PCI
Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard

PA = Payment Application
DSS = Data Security Standard

oh god it's getting worse

@Fosco and @Zypher Great, thanks!
@Zypher what is?

PCI

7:40 PM
Oh. heh
it's a pain in the ass :-(

status-here
I just reposted an old app that I removed for a while.

@YiJiang Out of curiosity, how come do you have all those crashes? I've yet to have any... although my air traffic really isn't that busy.

The website was down.
It is going back up.

Ugh, people expect us to convert their Java encryption stuff to JS? ...

@radp ... He does it by the power of jQuery of course

7:50 PM
Ah, I love those random down votes on my answers

@IvoWetzel - Where?
...waits for it...

The title is... strange, his question looks like he wants to work with plist files in node.js

Things like that are why chat gets accused of being a vote ring

@MichaelMrozek I don't see a problem there.... I see a way bigger problem with "how do I get the width of an element with jQuery" questions giving people +10 in under one minute

@IvoWetzel It's not like those are mutually exclusive

7:57 PM
I always thought of Chat as a down voting ring.

@radp Or a close voting ring
