Hello

Welcome, @Chacha102. Pull up a char!
I meant chair but I don't have the heart to edit out char :-)

Don't you mean pull up at foo at the bar?
2

@Chacha102 I consider myself bested!

Yeah, looks like this place will be called The Foo Bar soon.. very cool name, I'm kicking myself that I didn't come up with it.

well, 'The Foo Bar (General)'

3:06 PM
@Fosco Thanks, It's now the 6th highest voted feature-request.

@Fosco "The Unhandled Exception" would be #1 if it didn't have -7!
That answer is underrated. Everyone vote for meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/63536/naming-the-tavern/… !

I'm hoping something rises above 'The Foo Bar'
it just doesn't have the feeling I'd like the tavern to have

Then choose a name yourself :P

That's what I'll probably do..

@Chacha102 Well, it's your tavern and your contest... you're under no obligation to select the winner of the popular vote.

3:08 PM
I voted for "The Unhandled Exception", I wish they'd set up these poll votes so only upvotes would work.

@Chacha102 I agree; it also doesn't follow the "The adjective *noun*" convention

@PopularDemand I'm under no obligation to select the winner of the majority vote either

@Josh -7?! how did that happen...

@PopularDemand And you forgot to capitalize the 'P' in 'Popular'

@LanceRoberts Well the question asker chooses which one to accept, maybe @PopularDemand mcan ignore downvotes?

3:10 PM
@Chacha102 Aren't those the same thing?

@Fosco Sorry not net -7, +27/-7 for a net of +20

@Fosco A lot of people don't like it because it's programming-specific; this room isn't just for SO users

@MichaelMrozek And "The Foo Bar" isn't? :-)

@Josh foo is a drop-in replacement for dang near anything. Noun, adjective, preposition, article... it'll be whatever you want it to be.

@PopularDemand It was making your statement into a pun. The 'Popular' vote (your vote)

3:11 PM
@MichaelMrozek ok, makes sense.. but it's just a name, doesn't really impact the discussion that happens inside

@PopularDemand True. But I want a real adjective, not a placeholder :-)

and it will always have (General) after it

@Fosco Then we might as well call it "The Tavern (General)"

@PopularDemand I mean it's clever, but
@MichaelMrozek LOL

I'll be ignoring downvotes BTW

3:12 PM
The C# Major (General)

@Chacha102 foo bar still leads with 28

@PopularDemand It is the very model of a modern Major-General...

This argument has come up before; downvotes have a purpose in questions like these
Upvotes are "this name is awesome", downvotes are "what are you thinking, this name sucks"

Now that you said so, @Chacha102, I'll go upvote everything I didn't downvote :D

@MichaelMrozek You're right. I'm just whining because the answer I like best is downvoted :-)

3:13 PM
@badp No it doesn't. They are tied. I'm giving Unhandled exception +1 because I can't vote for it. (its my post)
@Josh What did you like?

@Chacha102 That applies to every post on the page -- the poster can't vote for it, but presumably likes it if they posted it in the first place

(BTW, I'm really more interested in what you guys like, its your tavern for the most part)
@MichaelMrozek Ya but I'm special...
:P

I'm cool with either of those top 2, I even upvoted the foo bar.

@Chacha102 My favorites are "The Unhandled Exception", "The Prancing Unicorn", "The Premature Optimization" and "The Flipped Bit"

3:16 PM
@Josh I like that 3 of those 4 were mine.. wish there were more contests..

@PopularDemand I don't think that qualifies as our turf :)

@PopularDemand Yahoo Answers is in all turfs, SO's characterstic is being just in one :P

@Fosco Yours were some of the best :-)

(Remember to sort by newest and see the newer submissions)

How's Facebook Answers going?

3:18 PM
So, tomorrow I'm going to get a group of people in here to decide the winner, and then we'll change it

@Chacha102 What time? I'll be here :-)

around now

@badp Way to appreciate that golden link I provided you.
@badp It just occurred to me that that'll be great for subjective stuff like "best Italian restaurant in Boston."

I hate Facebook.

If I understand the description I was given secondhand, you can rely on all your friends at Brandeis and BU and MIT for great results to that question.

3:22 PM
@PopularDemand You should ask that on Programmers.SE...

@MichaelMrozek It's really suboptimal for CW stuff though, where you might end up only owning a small piece of the post after some time.

be back after lunch

You know, that didn't sound like a good feature request in my head, but now that I write it out, I kind of like it.
If you're giving up ownership of a post to the community, and you no longer gain rep for it, you should also be able to vote on it. Yes/no/only after someone else has edited it?

no

Still torn on whether they should continue to show up in your questions/answers lists.
@Chacha102 Why?

3:30 PM
@PopularDemand Couldn't you use TripAdvisor for that?
The ticker got marginally less horrible

@badp It was just a random example, not a question I actually want to ask. But TripAdvisor doesn't know Hypothetical Userman's personal tastes like his friends do.

In other news, since I now have more meta rep than so rep, I'm going to call a bounty!
except I can't call it on what I wanted to call it on :(

Q: Open Source Advertising - Sidebar - 2H 2010

Robert CartainoIt's time once again to support your favorite open source project through our Free Vote-Based Advertising for Open Source Projects. We are clearing the leader boards to start the second half of 2010 anew. Here is your chance to create a Free Vote-Based Advertisement for an Open Source Project. C...

@PopularDemand I'd be only slightly ok with this if it didn't kick in until you lost the majority share and your name wasn't on it anymore

Make a Bounty on the Naming Thread
:P

but... At that point, you might as well just let people "disown" posts, something that's been requested for years now, and skip the whole mess

3:34 PM
the FOSS advertisement thread would be more worthy
I just don't know why I can call a bounty on the naming thread question (CW) and can't on the FOSS ad question (also CW)
oh wait I can

@badp I was about to say.

There's the Bounty :)

D'oh. I took the time to explain something last night and another answer got accepted. grumbles
:P
good thing it isn't accepted answers only that count towards my commitment!

@rchern Don't you know? You need to ignore all the fluff like actually helping the person, and just give an answer that looks correct.

And now things are more like they should. Although tis just a matter of time.

3:38 PM
Heh.

Any Xen Virtualization experts in here today?

@rchern yeah - his specific question was, "Why would I want this?"... if you'd answered that first and then gone on to list uses for various ovens, it might have been more clear.

@Chacha102 I 50-upped yours :P

@Shog9, I was going for the you-can't-determine-why-you-want-it-unless-you-understand-the-differences :P Oh well. It's an answer. I might get a commit token back one of these days!

Is that news feed popup necessary?

3:48 PM
@MichaelMrozek yes.

Amazing comment to that answer :°D

@rchern Heh. Ways you know that Jeff Atwood isn't a big fan of you, #18: you never seem to get any commit tokens back.

Going AFK, anyone needs me I'll be back in 45min

Heh. If the level was 5 posts instead of 10 I'd be golden! 7, 6, and 3. I initially thought meta counted also. (;

@rchern Don't be silly, there's never any important content on meta.

3:55 PM
oy

@rchern Seriously though, how do you know it's 10? I don't remember that being in any official announcement. Is it just worked out through trial and error?

Don't remember where I saw it honestly.

Q: What is a bad feature of Stack Overflow?

Chacha102I know that lots of people get help from the site everyday, and in general it is a great site. I love answering questions and getting answers for other knowledgeable programmers. But..... There is probably one feature, one thing about Stack Overflow (or related sites) that gets me annoyed. That...

A: What is a bad feature of Stack Overflow?

EtherMeta questions describing clearly broken behaviour closed as "status-bydesign" when Jeff really means "closed-because-I-say-so".

btw -- does SE warn you if a bounty of yours is about to expire?

@badp MSO gave me a three-day warning and a 24-hour warning for the bounty I had last week.

4:33 PM
@PopularDemand Thanks

1 hour later…
5:47 PM
Hello

The hour of silence is dead! Long live the... wait, what?

So, hows the fish?

Bountiful

I'm listening to Owl City. I feel so unhip...

5:55 PM
@Chacha102 Nothin' wrong with that.
Can any room owner move messages to the trash heap?

Um, you're asking people to essentially spam?

Ok, all of the junk messages have been removed.
@PopularDemand Yes
@rchern Yes

Can I ask why?

Wait a second, I'll get Google Scribe up and running

@rchern Sadly, this isn't the first time

5:58 PM
....
You can migrate the migration message

You can also edit the migration message.

Like I just migrated the migration messages from the last migration

@Chacha102 How is this achieved?

You click on it when you migrate the messages
It acts just like any other message

@PopularDemand room → message admin

6:00 PM
Hi

Hi
Would you like a beer?

@Michael, heh.

Too bad. We are out.

If I were working from home, I'd already have one
or two

So, have we decided on a topic for this room yet?

6:06 PM
isn't the topic general?

"Why Chacha102 is the right lord and master of Ye Olde Tavern (Working Title, Proper Name Pending)"? That would explain why it's been so quiet.

@rchern So specific stuff, in general, is off topic.

uh?

@badp No, specific stuff, in specific, is off-topic. Specific stuff, discussed generally, is in a gray area at worst.
Specific stuff in General, however, is certainly off-topic.

ok...why does this room need a topic then? I thought this was the room without a topic

6:09 PM
Strictly speaking the topic is, «Here we have our fill of bread and wine, and then tell of tales of other times we've had our fill of bread and wine. Name the Tavern: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/63536/naming-the-tavern»
which prompts migration reasons not bread related, not wine related and not unicorn related (unicorns are always on topic)

Um, I think you may be overthinking this just a tad

@badp What about not tale related?

@PopularDemand Good point, poems are right out.

@Chacha102, people keep asking about drinks, but how's the tavern food?
Can I get some waffles?

@rchern if you want I'll create a topic-less room. I think I'll call it b
(ta bum dsssh.)

6:14 PM
crickets

recorded cough

@badp I believe you're looking for instantrimshot.com.
But I don't get the joke.

@PopularDemand The room url would be chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/rooms/somenumberhere/b/

@badp I still don't get it. Wouldn't it make more sense to call the room \0 or ?

@PopularDemand Look at the end of the URL.

6:22 PM
@badp Based on the graphic that briefly displayed, I think the problem is that I don't know what 4chan b is.

4chan is an English-language imageboard website. Launched on October 1, 2003, its boards are primarily used for the posting of pictures and discussion of manga and anime. Users generally post anonymously and the site has been linked to Internet subcultures and activism, most notably Project Chanology. 4chan users have been responsible for the formation or popularization of Internet memes such as lolcats, Rickrolling, "Chocolate Rain", "Pedobear", and many others. The site's random board is by far its most popular and notorious feature. Known as "/b/", there are very minimal rules on po...

Horray for 4chan

Who's that guy in the onebox?
Looks like a guy I went to college with.

"What a 4chan user may look like"

I liked the attack on scientology they had with Anonymous..

6:28 PM
@rchern Did you get the joke and it just wasn't funny, or were you also confused?

On meta, how do you see the # of up and down votes instead of just the net?

@Fosco Click on the net.
Not you, personally.

@Popular, the former.

You have <1000 rep, making you an ineligible reciever downfield.
@badp, I defer to @rchern's expertise: crickets

@PopularDemand it doesn't do anything when I click the net. oh ok, rep based.. got it, thanks.
nice football reference
I took 2nd place in a football trivia contest at work yesterday.. My Google-Fu is intense.

6:32 PM
@Fosco Some of us are excited about the start of the regular season.

@badp great answer on the search 'intitle' question!

@fosco, I thought the question was a great idea, and hope they take it to heart. I don't think it'll conflict with 'i' since it would have the colon qualifier after it.
We should always be trying to make user's jobs easier.

@LanceRoberts I agree with you on principle. In practice, about that specific request... why should intitle:1 be i:? Why not intitle:0? Or inquestion:1? Or isaccepted:0?

@PopularDemand The 4chan founder.

I see, that makes sense. Thanks.

6:46 PM
He gave a 10 minute speech on TED, which, unlike his own site, is SFW

@Fosco Any trivia contest that allows Google is not really a trivia contest. </smugness-from-winning-last-week's-office-football-trivia-contest>

Oooo.
We need to do a trivia contest here

@mmyers what did you win? I got a $20 gift card to TGI Fridays, lol.

Why was the Roman consular year moved from the Ides of March to the Kalends of January (January 1)?

@Fosco Smugness, of course.

6:53 PM
@Chacha102 ... it looks bad to start the year off with a regicide?

@Chacha102 There was a lot of confusion with the prior calendar, years were varying lengths and it was somehow politicized.

Yikes, they're using Delphi to build Android and iPhone applications now
Way to infect thousands of unsuspecting developers

(Impericide?)

Really? Delphi?.. what version?... I have 2006 installed here at work ;)

Hi! I came up with a few more names. Do you like any of these? The Gold Badge - The Unicorn Rider - The Overflowed Cellar - The Trilogy Inn

6:57 PM
@Pop, I'm not hung-up on 'i', I just think that we could have a shortcut (still keeping 'intitle'). We should actually have any qualifer able to be shortened to the minimum needed to specifiy it, so maybe 'int' for 'intitle'.

@mmyers you can keep your smugness.. I'll keep my Jack Daniels Chicken
@NickMeta Hi. None of those strike me... love the foo bar though!

0
A: Need abbreviation for 'intitle:1'

Lance RobertsI think all qualifiers should be able to be shortcutted to the minimum required to define the operator, so for intitle: we could use int:, for inquestion:, inq:, etc.

Really? "intitle" is too much to type?

@Shog9 It requires both hands!

@LanceRoberts clearly you're hung up on it :)

7:01 PM
Figure out how many hours per second abbreviating it will save, and post that.

I'd recommend a macro tool.

@Fosco He meant he's not in love with the specific abbreviation Tony suggested.

@Fosco, actually it looks like I'm hung up on int.

don't let a little number get you down..

@LanceRoberts Floating point numbers aren't so bad, once you get to know them.

7:02 PM
@PopularDemand ;)

yeh, floating point is just int in disguise

@Fosco To be honest I'm kind of irked the question was in CW mode, which meant I got 0 rep instead of 95

I'm back for a moment, did I miss anything interesting?

I don't understand why anyone would even oppose the concept, since it won't break anything, and it's just a small matter of programming.

(I myself have however made questions likely to attract much downvoting as CW so I guess I don't get to complain)

7:05 PM
A very small matter of programming.

What is a small matter of programming?

In software development, Small Matter of Programming (SMOP) or Simple Matter of Programming is a phrase used to ironically indicate that a suggested feature or design change would in fact require a great deal of effort; it often implies that the person proposing the feature underestimates its cost. Such underestimated costs are common during cost estimation, particularly near the beginning of a project. The Jargon File describes an SMOP as: :#A piece of code, not yet written, whose anticipated length is significantly greater than its complexity. Used to refer to a program that could obviou...
See the intitle link above for the specific topic.

@badp Concern about your rep aside, I did find it unusual that that was a CW question. I've seen Tony post before, he should know by now that discussions on Meta don't require CW. The only reason I can think of is that he got downvoted a lot in the past, anticipated that it would happen again and wanted to preserve his rep.

So... It would probably break SO for days...

@Shog9 yeh, probably.

7:07 PM
Nice reference to "Airplane" :)

@Josh No. There's never anything interesting going on in The Tavern.

@PopularDemand "I can down-vote him all day without hurting my fingers!"

@badp -1 in spirit.

@Fosco, oh just saw your comment. Hmm... ok :-)

@PopularDemand LOL. Never anything interesting when you or @Diago aren't around, you mean? :-)

7:09 PM
@Shog9 Sorry, I'm not getting that reference.

@PopularDemand Yeah, the point is that one in particular wasn't a real thread in particular, just a "happy 200k rep Jon Skeet" gone very wrong

@Josh Yes, that's correct, and it's also true when I am around, and also, when Diago is around, and in addition, when Diago and I are both here.
@badp Please. Don't clutter Meta with that junk.

@PopularDemand old Simpsons quote; Nelson can punch a padded Bart all day without hurting his fists

Everyone knows the next big milestone after 100k is 250k, not 200k.

@PopularDemand I beg to differ about the "when Diago and I are both here." part :-)

7:11 PM
@Shog9 Ah, I remember it now. Good work. That whoosh was entirely my fault.

@PopularDemand Tsk, 250k doesn't get you the signed painting of unicorns

I haven't watched The Simpsons in... close to 10 years... so I can hardly fault anyone else for not getting a random misquote

200k does.
Just the same way you get edit rights at 2k, not at 2.5k!

All I ever hear about The Simpsons anymore is that it's not as good as it was in years [3-9; range varies depending on speaker] and that it's no longer worth watching.

bah, the real edit rights come at 2,560

7:13 PM
But they keep putting out new seasons. Who is watching these episodes?
@Shog9 Shh, don't tell him about those yet!

oops
nevermind, bad P

@badp Nah, he only got a print of the signed painting. The real reward will be at 250k. It probably won't even be announced publicly.

w00p.. interoffice mail delivery with my TGI Fridays gift cards! << #breakingnews

@Chacha102 I wasn't paying attention before; why did you put a week-long bounty on the naming question and then say you're going to pick the name tomorrow?

@MichaelMrozek I was wondering that also!

7:18 PM
You don't have to wait a full week to award a bounty. After all, you don't get to choose how long the bounty period is; it's always a week.
He could have announced the bounty five seconds before picking a winner, or two days afterwards.

@PopularDemand True.

@PopularDemand Oh, ok; I thought you had to wait a while

@MichaelMrozek I believe there's a waiting period to award it, but he's free to choose a winner in his head whenever he pleases.

Nah, you can award it instantly

@Chacha102 Since when?

7:21 PM
Since forever..?

Oh, never mind, you know what, I'm thinking about how long you have to wait to accept an answer.
So... since that rule was implemented.

15 mins

(In the overlap between when bounties were tied to acceptances and when the "no immediate accepting of answers" was introduced, that is.)

2 days if it's yours.

Gah.
English.

7:40 PM
so wait... What are the limits on bounties now then? What stops them from being used to funnel rep from sockpuppets?

@Shog9 ... hawk-eyed users?

we're doomed
3

The sockpuppets would have to perform well enough to earn sufficient rep to offer the bounties in the first place, which is not the hardest thing ever but not insignificant, either.
And it would be worth looking into if one answer was awarded multiple bounties, though the sockpuppets could just award bounties to different answers.

@PopularDemand Yeah, it's a lot harder than getting 15 rep and upvoting the parent account endlessly.

Perhaps a page listing recent bounty awardees would be helpful?
Just to see if the same people keep showing up.

7:44 PM
I expect anyone trying to gain serious rep would show up on the cross-voting report fairly quickly, but it is kinda sad that SO now effectively allows rep to be treated as currency.

@Shog9 Can you really call it currency if it has no value?

@PopularDemand I hear tell you can cash it in for stuffed toys at the counter.

@PopularDemand these pieces of paper in my pocket have no intrinsic value either

@mmyers Where is sed counter? I need to go cash in!
it's like the arcade when you could cash in your tickets! Can I redeem mine for a plush server?

with the tickets you have, I'm afraid you're limited to a comb and some waxed paper
not both though - gotta take your pick.
the comb is Genuine Nylon...

7:47 PM
@Shog9 Damnit! Why does all the good stuff always require like 250k tickets?
I'd better head back to the games then... :-)

@Shog9 Yes, but it's understood that they are valuable to people from whom you may wish to obtain goods or services. What's SO rep good for?

that's how they get you - unless you cheat, you're effectively working for like $0.02/hr
@PopularDemand beats me. But supposedly, there are folks answering bounty questions...
...which means if you have enough rep to offer a bounty, you have this perceived advantage.
that gives it value

@PopularDemand I find it's good for getting better/faster answers to difficult questions

i mean, there are actually people who pay legal tender for virtual gold in certain MMORPGs - economics doesn't have to make sense

@Shog9 Proof I'm in the wrong business :-)

7:51 PM
@Shog9 yeah.. game currency essentially becomes a function of time, and people are willing to pay to save time gathering currency.

@Josh just think... You could be this guy

he could be a ... broken image?

@Shog9 HA!

dammit, @balpha - when comes the auto-imgur support?

Actually I'm this guy:

7:53 PM
@Fosco For once, I'm the one who does see it; it's South Park computer nerd guy.

@Josh This one is broken for me.

@PopularDemand It's South Park's "Safari is down" guy :-)

If you're sitting in the first 10 rows... there's something you ought to know...

@Chacha102 Rain gear recommended for this show?

7:56 PM
@Josh You must be from California

@Chacha102 Boston, actually, but I was referring to a warning that was given to a friend of mine before he shot video of a Guar concert... an indoor concert... :-)

...
It is the first 10 row song from Seaworld

Whe he asked why rain gear was recommended he was told that "liquids" would be shot on to members of the audience. He was doing a piece for Hard Copy xD
@Chacha102 Ahhh. I missed the reference in chat which you were referring to...?

> “If you’re sitting in the first twelve rows, there’s something you ought to know…there’s a 50/50 bet you’ll get 100% WET!! So don’t look so surprised when the water splashes in your eyes. I just thought you like to know about the imminent H20! …. If you want to stay drier, won’t you please move higher!”

LOL
