@Diago It happens when you grow up. I took a whole course on this in college.

Thus I am only impressed by people who learned new languages after they lost the "I'm a child, it's easy for me to pick up new languages" part of their brains.

His family spoke Russian around the house, the kid knew both languages. I was the first to ask him to translate between the two :-)

@Josh Actually I never really noticed the switch. It was almost automatic. I just spend less time around people that speak my native tongue. It's the same reason people develop accents. If you had to hear my voice you would be shocked and struggle to understand me, although I speak English fluently.

I know one person from South Africa. He sounds pretty much English to my untrained ear, but it took a little getting used to.

@Diago I have spoken to people over the phone after emailing/IMing with them for years. It's often a shock to hear their accents after reading their words in "my voice" :-)

@JoePhillips How does that site work? That was one of the first SE sites I saw... it was before all the "new" SE way of doing things. Do they pay a hosting fee?

@Josh They don't pay. But I if they don't maintain their current membership they will get shut down. They have the option of migrating to SE 2.0 thought.

I know both them and MathOverflow are thinking of moving to a clone since they are not happy with giving up ownership

I checked it out, seemed like they were building a good community. I think it's a great idea for a StackExchange site! But not being a parent I didn't have anything to contribute, LOL.
