Right Back to the topic! I need a new Meta name!!!!

Are suggestions that require posting a feature-request for "/" to be allowed accepted?

(waits to here the crack of @PopularDemand's neck)

@Diago How about something "who's on first"-y, like "you" or "her"?

Tunes

By their musics shall thee know them

@PopularDemand Confusios says... Even I'm confused
@balpha Name suggestion. Quick, or allow / in the names on MSO

6:01 PM
@Diago Do you know what Who's On First is?

@PopularDemand Sadly no. I live in a third world country remember :P

@Diago Vuvuzela

@Diago Just Google it, it'll be more helpful than any explanation I could provide.

This is just a general off-topic room right?

@BrucevanderKooij Yes... but that question doesn't fill me with hope.

6:04 PM
@BrucevanderKooij please ask this kind of questions here:

The Meta Tavern (General)

For meta discussion about the meta channel on meta stack overf

@Popular: it's just that I couldn't find a room that had to do with user experience design (UX). So, what should I do now?

@PopularDemand Adding it to my list

@BrucevanderKooij Sorry, that just seemed like the sort of question a troll or spammer would lead off with. Welcome to The Tavern.

@balpha As much as I hate them, that might not be a bad one. (I am SO ignoring the hint thought)

:)

6:06 PM
(^|^)

@PopularDemand no problem :)

@Diago I was just thinking of South Africa
I would never suggest that you... oh, nvm

@Bruce, I think there was a UX room at one point, but I can't find it now; the rooms do get auto-frozen after a certain period of inactivity.
No guarantees that we're all experts, but you're welcome to ask... and @balpha there was in charge of implementing this chat, so he obviously knows a thing or two.

there's nothing fitting that comes up when searching the rooms for "UI", "UX", of "User"

I'll wait for the Tavern poll to end and then post it on Meta. Troggy got his pretty image out of it last time

6:08 PM
@PopularDemand right, I could always ask a question on ui.stackexchange about where people go to discuss things (I guess a lot of people are on very specific mailing lists)

@Diago, how about something like Joey Szpolski? No way that could go wrong....
@BrucevanderKooij I don't participate there, but if it's like other Stack Exchange sites, I think they'd frown on that.

@PopularDemand ...unless you draw a mustache onto a gravatar

@PopularDemand I guess I could formulate a specific question
It's just that formulating a specific question can take quite a lot of effort by itself
Instead of just a general "Hey, does anybody know any patterns with regards to being able to integrate 'giving weight' to things in a user interface for organizing video content?"
I'll just knock out a few mockups first

@BrucevanderKooij Your technical language has lost me, but SE is really big on objective questions with demonstrably correct answers. YMMV on UI. The only site I know of where this pattern isn't followed is -- tragically -- cooking. And Programmers, but that's a special case, blah, blah, blah.

I still like @rchern idea. Except they even check for HTML entities in names.

6:13 PM
Holy crap.. these headphones have so much bass, they're moving on my ears!

@Fosco So... are they sentient, or not?

has this turned into Twitter?

@PiersMyers ouch.

RT @Piers has this turned into Twitter?

@Fosco I don't mind, I am a big Twitter fan :)

6:15 PM
DM @PiersMyers What makes you say that?

@PopularDemand Some per-site rooms apparently are invite only with no public read access

(Since @balpha was the fastest draw on that last one)

@badp that's for the mods

RT @balpha @PiersMyers has this turned into Twitter? <<< #sotrue

@badp True, I think it was the public room to discuss their beta in this case, but again, I'm not certain.

6:17 PM

The Tavern has gone of the rails #sochat #madness

<failed-facebook-knockoff/>

@Diago find a way to make it happen!!
My rep on meta is 666. Freaky.

@rchern Hold on, I'll downvote something of yours.

6:21 PM
:P

@PopularDemand Already on it. Because I care

Is it just me or is there a refresh which blanks the entire page?

@rchern Couldn't find anything suitable. Upvoted a post instead.

I remember the good ole days.
The real challenge is getting 42 rep however.
(or 42k)

@PopularDemand, hehe.

6:23 PM
Finally
My spellchecker is using the right English
Or everyone's most favourite reputation count. 1337.

Strangely enough SO only has one user with 42k and several with 41k

@Diago I assume you mean British English?

@PiersMyers That would be correct

I'm halfway to 1337, kinda.

Dammit. I only switched back to my browser to get an API key. That was 10 minutes ago.

6:27 PM
DAKE4-224LA-SEK23
There, now you can go.

@BrucevanderKooij let me guess -- firefox?

Do 10k mods get the red flag counter when spam/offensive flags are raised?
or do we (they) have to manually check the flag page?

no, the counter only shows mod flags

So we (they) have to manually check /tools/flagged
Well, okay, posts that get such flags get handled of quite easily anyway
and in other news if you vote to have a question closed and it gets reopened, you cannot cast your vote again.

@PopularDemand FU

6:43 PM
@balpha yes, 3.6.9 pre, why?

sounds the beta alarm

@Diago you could also take the Popular Demand route and go with "the CW police," "five guys who have too much time," "a tyrannical mod"....

@BrucevanderKooij you're describing a known gecko bug
I've tried every suggested workaround I could find, but none of them worked

@balpha do you have any idea what is causing the behavior?

the sidebar
position: fixed

6:47 PM
@balpha hmm, I just deleted it using Firebug... I guess that fixes it :-)

@PopularDemand says the close police

Bloody GZIP compression!\

I'm back
@PopularDemand Clearly @Diago is more knowledgeable than I, I have no complaints about being called less than a peer :-)

@PopularDemand Worth the consideration

@Fosco those are some crazy headphones!

6:58 PM
@Josh It took me the whole of the last 5 hours to understand why responses from the API was garbled.
When the documentation clearly stated All responses are GZIP compressed

@Diago I've run into that before

I am by NO means anyone's peer.

gzip is great except when you don't know it's there :-)

@Diago You realize I was not referring to hereditary peerages?

@PopularDemand I have not read the transcript yet. Will get back to you!

7:00 PM
damn hippies

@Diago Your reputation begs to differ :-) QUite impressive

@Josh Are we looking at the same profile?

@Diago 9k on SU, 11k on meta? :-)

Diago, you don't have 10K on SU? Slacker!

@Josh 1k on SO and SF. Lolz. Sadly I am a software developer by trade :)
@Shog9 I will NEVER get to 10K on SO. It's virtually impossible.

7:06 PM
Getting to 10k on a site is probably much less exciting when you're already a mod there
"Yay, I have access to tools....still"

@Josh they are the dr. dre beats solo hd's. a bit pricey, but they sound real nice and I want to get back into listening to music constantly at work.

@Diago You're a mod though - what good is power if you don't abuse it for personal gain?

@Diago I finally reached 3k on SO after 1.5 years. It was surprisingly difficult
I don't know how people have so much rep, it's very impressive :-)
@Diago I don't think I'll get there either
and I'm also a software developer by trade :-)

@Josh :) I made 4k within 60 days

@Fosco People like you amaze me :-)
I think it must be your headphones ;-)

7:08 PM
/me blushes

I got to 3k relatively quick, but it's been slow going since then, especially with the Great Rep Recalc.

@Shog9 That's right! You show 'im! I hear they could use a new mod over there at SU.

@Josh Just post a lot of answers. Look at all the top users: they post good answers, but more importantly, they post a lot of answers
/me slaps @PopularDemand upside the head with a wet PSU

yeah I only have 2 questions on SO.. it's all answers.. refreshing the new questions page and sniping the php/sql stuff..

Oohhh, I just saw that I get 16 rep with a recalc on SO, could I get one please (if it doesn't affect the other sites)?

7:09 PM
@Shog9 Answers take me some time to compose, I have trouble getting to easy questions before they're answered

I've slacked off since finding this chat room.

@Fosco likewise :-)

I blame it all on @Shog9

@Josh It's not always about being quick.

@Shog9 Hm, perhaps I'll have cajun-breaded PSU for dinner tonight.
@Shog9 Volume won't help you if your answers are no good, though. If it were that easy, even I would have lots of rep.

7:11 PM
@Shog9 True. But if you're not quick you have to be intelligent ;-)

roomname: The Slacker's Refuge

I admit that volume will help you even if your questions are atrocious, but at least Jeff is trying to fix that. I have a list of a dozen users in my head who should be banned but haven't been yet.
Okay, now that I've had a second to think, it may not actually be a dozen, but there are at least six for sure.

Yeh, I wish I had more stupid questions.
I do have a few though...

Q: Naming the Tavern

Chacha102I think Popular Demand put it best: It's a well-known fact that all the best taverns follow a specific naming convention. "The Brass Lantern," "The Prancing Pony," "The Drunken Clam," "The Mended Drum,"... they're all "The [Descriptor] [Noun]." Unfortunately, the tavern we're in isn't so bles...

@Josh Sadly, I still see users collecting rep from duplicate answers posted late.

7:13 PM
I always check the timestamps on duped answers.

@Shog9 True. If I didn't have to work for a living I could earn much more rep. Stupid bills to pay! ;-)

@PopularDemand "Jeff is trying to fix that." how?

But, assuming you're not scandalous, you don't have to be ultra-smart: there are questions that don't get answered but aren't terribly hard - they just need someone to take the time and understand them

@Shog9 very true

@LanceRoberts Don't forget to check the revision histories, too.

7:13 PM
Speaking of earning a living I need to call APC now and find out how to get rid of the crickets in my new UPS. bbs

this thing is still collecting up-votes - and all I did was read the documentation (two hours after the question was posted): stackoverflow.com/questions/1967537/1967708#1967708

@Josh ... were you... were you serious about those?

I am kicking myself for not coming up with The Foo Bar... I love it.

but @Shog, you used bubbles! Not freehand bubbles but still bubbles.

@PopularDemand LOL, no, it's chirping but the LCD shows no indication of why
I ssupect a bad battery

7:14 PM
oh, yeah, right - pictures help too

@Shog9 I've posted answers with the best of intentions after just reading documentation for things I've never used that turn out to be wrong.

@Fosco wasn't there a column in the back of Byte that centered around The Foo Bar?

the damn thing cut power to all devices last night but we had no power failure... the system on it would have been better off directly connected to the wall!

@PopularDemand Well, ok - actually testing your assumptions helps too

But if it's an old question, you'll still get lots of upvotes with just a "see the documentation at [link]" appended to the answer.
Nobody bothers to verify.

7:15 PM
The Foobar'd Unicorn!

@badp YES!!!

@Shog9 FWIW I did delete the offending answers (I think there have been two of them) afterwards, when I couldn't figure out the real right answer.

@Shog9 I don't remember =\

An unfortunate trend I've noticed recently is a tendency for users to post answers stating that they couldn't reproduce the problem in the question (while others post the code with random changes that either accomplish nothing, or break something that used to work)
you should at least try to verify the problem before attempting to fix it (assuming you haven't previously encountered it yourself)

to be honest I'm surprised the tavern question didn't get closed.

7:16 PM
There are a lot of reading-comprehension-challenged answers out there..

YES

you're not counting the reading-comprehension-challenging answers.

Q: Can we prevent some of the low-quality questions from entering our system?

Jeff AtwoodStack Overflow has been wildly successful. And maybe in some ways too successful. I am concerned that Stack Overflow is being inundated by a stream of low-quality questions from users who are accidentally poisoning our well -- by turning off and turning away the core answerers who do all the rea...

(Sorry it took so long to find the link @badp, I thought it was a blog post, not an MSO post.)
Okay, I know that question's not new to everyone in the room and you're all dutifully reading through all the answers right now.

I left to down-vote stuff.

@Shog9 Ah, good man. Apologies for the interruption. Carry on.
I am tempted to ask on English SE what the proper term is, though. "upvote/downvote vs. up-vote/down-vote vs. up vote/down vote"
Or, some unholy combination of the those options.

7:27 PM
up-vote / down-vote
(not sure if the hyphen belongs when used as nouns though)

@PopularDemand I'd say upvote / downvote...
hey @GregHewgill!

@PopularDemand Thanks, although the problem sounds very limited to SO

@badp Yeah, it's a problem that scales according to the size of the site. More users means more bad users.

Freehand circles does it again.
Amazing
What's the room for closing questions again?

7:43 PM

Regulator Headquarters

Report evil (or more likely, dupe) questions here for closure
You are, technically, already in it.

@PopularDemand Yeah, I decided to attempt the barren wasteland and find it myself

@Diago Interesting, when I clicked on my little blue circle and your message got highlighted, it became two lines long, then reverted to one when the highlight went away.

@PopularDemand That's happened to me

7:57 PM
Well, this has been interesting. My job today has been 95% "go read Joel on Software archives."

I've been fixing a Hudson build problem for about 6 hours
That red circle is so unholy...

How do you like Hudson?

@PopularDemand Is your company hiring? ;-)

My job two weeks ago was "think about whether we should implement Hudson."
@Josh, yes.
Though I kind of want to take a few months off and intern with Fog Creek at this point.

@PopularDemand I would like it if the build servers were configured the same as our dev machines, but they're not, so things break there that we can't reproduce locally

7:58 PM
(Like they'd take me.)
@MichaelMrozek Is that an issue with Hudson or an issue with you not being given control over some of the machines in question?

@PopularDemand I was actually joking as I'm happily the CTO of my company, but I'll remember that next time a friend asks me for work. BTW Fog Creek would be awesome :-)

I like the swipe to hide windows on my Mac.

@PopularDemand I don't think Hudson is doing anything wrong, it's just configured differently

One swipe and the teacher has no idea what I'm doing

@Josh You asked a question, I answered a question. I remember you talking about your job a while ago, I didn't think you were seriously in the market.

8:00 PM
@Chacha102 That's awesome :-)

@PopularDemand A month or two after I was first hired here, I spent a week or so reading Joel on Software from start to finish. That's how I learned about Stack Overflow, which was in private beta at the time.

@PopularDemand Oh, no, I wasn't expecting you to not answer -- it's great to hear your company is hiring, many aren't these days

I think we score a 2 on the Joel Test, though.

mmyers, do you work at SO?

@Chacha102 Ha, no, not by a long shot.

8:02 PM
@mmyers Yeah we're not much better, sadly. Mostly due to lack of resources

can you make me a mod?

I've been considering a MSO post about the difference between Fog Creek and SO Internet Services, Inc. and Joel Spolsky/Jeff Atwood, private human beings. Some people don't seem to get that they're not the same. Though it's been better of late, which is why I haven't actually written that post.
@mmyers We score... four and two halves.
I need to rent a billboard for "In real life when you shout 'shut up!' to two people arguing loudly you just create a louder three-way argument."

@PopularDemand I'd read that.. I have no idea what any of that is.. lol.

@Fosco What are you referring to?

Q: What role does Fog Creek Software have in the ownership of the Stack Exchange Network?

Maxim ZaslavskyA day or two ago, I wrote a Wikipedia article about the Stack Exchange Network only to notice the new legal information pages a few hours later. Now, I want to update the article so it is as accurate as possible. I'm not sure I completely understand who owns the Stack Exchange Network. I see th...

8:11 PM
@PopularDemand I just counted up... one and two halves, counting Visual SourceSafe as a full point for the source control item.

@Shog9 Well, how about that. Another tiny piece of cognitive friction, gone.
@mmyers Honestly, I thought I was doing better, until I actually counted.
I wonder if that's unusual.

@PopularDemand the proposed mso post about fc/so/js/ja

@mmyers huh. Well if you're gonna count that, then I'm gonna give myself a "+1 daily builds" for something being built, somewhere, by someone, every day.

I honestly have no idea how often builds are done. It's ASP.NET, so maybe someone is building every day.

@Fosco Oh, "I would read," not "I had read." Anyways, go ahead and do it, it's what Shog9 just posted.

8:14 PM
yeah... We have build servers for various apps and components, and they certainly could be built daily, but... Some don't change for months at a time, so it'd be kinda pointless.

@mmyers Yeah we're PHP, but we have a way to test code before it goes into production, so I counted that as a yes :-)
when code is checked into subversion, demo site is automatically updated

Okay, home time. Goal for tonight: make my laptop compile Hello World in something .NETtish. Doesn't seem that hard, but my laptop deserves a sticker that says "Doesn't work on my machine!"

Great. Someone has the bug spreadsheet open so I can't mark anything complete.

@mmyers Get Trac!

Trac is free and open source. That pretty much eliminates it from consideration right off the bat.

8:21 PM
@mmyers LOL, why?

"There's a reason free software doesn't cost anything." -- the guy in charge of such things (can't remember his title)

@Josh he's using VSS, a spreadsheet, and IE6 - obviously, his team has a strict "no working software" policy

@Shog9 ROFLMAO

IE7. Please.

ah, sorry - I should have said, "mostly-broken software"

8:23 PM
It really is a great piece of software and much better than an excel sheet only one person can have open at once!

(and yeah, Trac is pretty nice)

but if you prefer, at least move to Access so multiple people can read/edit!

ACCESS FRONT-END ON LAN-DRIVE XLS FTL!!

@Shog9 LOL

I'd rather not discuss Access. I was in our Access group for a while.

8:26 PM
@mmyers Fair enough :-)

night slackers.

@Fosco Later!

9:01 PM
So what's on tap here in the Tavern this week?
almost quitting time for me, I plan to grab a beer and do some XMPP coding

making ice cream, checking in code for a build tomorrow

@Shog9 Yum, what flavor?

vanilla ;-p
mexican vanilla
technically, it's more of a frozen custard - there's cream involved, but the bulk is milk & eggs
i have these peach pies, you see... And they just aren't complete without a scoop of vanilla icecream

@Shog9 Most definitely.

@Shog9 That sounds delicious :-)

9:12 PM
Speaking of food, need to head over to the local bakery 'fore they close - need bread for BLTs.

@Shog9 Enjoy it!

Hmm. I thought Twitter showed it on your home stream if someone RTs you.
Oh, old-style rt. Maybe that's why.
(Can you tell I don't tweet much?)

@rchern I never have, and doubt I will... just don't comprehend it :-)

9:28 PM
I have a personal account I don't use much.
Trying to use it for WA though.

I gave up on Twitter, Facebook, and social networking in general.
Now I just need to kick the habit for chatting online and we will have a Trifecta.

@Diago Good luck with that
I hear they're working on a SO chat patch. Contains unicorn blood and maple syrup :-)

New Meme added. About time

A: How addicted to Stack Overflow are you?

DiagoI recently asked Jeff to delete all my accounts off all 4 sites because I was living and breathing the Trilogy in 4 parts. I have however killed the RSS feeds and try to only come on once or twice a day. Needless to say 2 weeks later he re-linked all the accounts so that I could come back. Howev...

@Diago, I see a problem...

@rchern Hmmm?

9:32 PM
@Diago HAHA I read that a long time ago and forgot about it :-)

Your username is still Diago and not /me.
:D

I decided my addiction was terminal; there was only one sensible option - get a job there.
2

@rchern @MarcGravell won't let me use / in my name

@Diago Really? I was just about to try it

@MarcGravell I am hoping I will come up with something awesome to convince @Jeff of the same soon!

9:34 PM
@Diago, That's not very nice of him. ):

lol. On my local rig my usual name is <script>alert('donk');</script>, or something more abusive
a good way to find the more obvious xss vulnerabilities while writing the code ;p

@MarcGravell better than Marc');DROP TABLE users :-)

@MarcGravell So, how much, will bribing someone to make my Meta name /me cost me?

@Diago /me will contribute to the bribe! :-)

I don't actually have access to that DB from here (well, I could probably jump servers, but I don't intend on doing that), but... tell you what...

9:37 PM
Unless I do the whole new OpenId and not setting my name stunt. But that might be counterproductive....

@Josh, I believe you meant /me will contribute

@MarcGravell I am all ears :)

2 seconds...

@rchern You're right... and you just demonstrated a bug with the /me script :-)

hard F5 if you please

9:38 PM
StartsWith vs Contains?

Woohoo!!!!

hahaha

@MarcGravell You are the king!

@me THAT IS AWESOME
@me I second that!

awww, it says Diago when starred

9:39 PM
Oh Wow

that'll only last until your account decides it needs a refresh - max 1 hour, so average 30 minutes depending on where you are in the process

rofl

Oh well.... It's good enough for now :)

@me The '@me's are hysterical

I am going to find a creative way to do it on MSO. I just have too

9:41 PM
/me is very glad @devinb's not here to see this

Or @PopularDemand or @Shog9
And even in the transcript it's not gonna show.

(what have I created...)

@me I have screenshots :-)
I made a directory on my local machine for SOFU screenshots on April 1st xD

@MarcGravell a friendly little monster that can hug you and squeeze all the love outta you :)
@Josh I wonder how many will notice
With one question I am going to hit the rep cap on MSO today.
That's sad. Really really really sad.

@me Not sad, that's awesome! :-) WHich one?

9:45 PM
@PopularDemand To be honest we've also been having horrible questions like (and I quote) "authorize my game" "How do i make my game work???????????????????????????" [starcraft-2]

Q: Even Google knows SO is the one....

DiagoDoing a Google Search this evening I noticed the following interesting first result. It seems that even Google knows that SO always has the answer, except the link points to the question C# Automatic Property DeSerialization of JSON. I am not sure if this is a bug, or if SO can even control wh...

@Josh

@Diago That's hysterical, almost as good as the OMG PONIES sitelink

Right. Can someone explain this one to me please?

Q: Comments using forward slashes

EricWhen did comments switch to using forward slashes rather than hyphens? What was the rational behind this change? Personally, I find hyphens more logical

Because it's like 23:45 and I have no clue what they are on about

@Diago Umm.... did they switch to C++ from HyperTalk?
I think he's lost it. I have no idea what he's asking either

@Josh You can.... OK, I am not going to finish that sentence, but, I have no cooking clue what he is on about. I suggest we migrate it to the webapps site and @rchern can handle it.

9:50 PM
@Diago I agree!
@rchern you're the mod for the cooking site? I just found that this weekend
Oh, @me just edited his post...

Actually I wonder what is it that sets the #comment-151810 anchor in that page?

@badp Ahhhhh, you may be on to something?

although comment anchors still use hyphens, not slashes.

I should really learn to keep photoshop open

@Diago because it takes like 2 hours to launch? :-)
Awww, the @me wore off :-(

9:55 PM
(and no, don't ask)

@MarcGravell I think you're potentially right about the pencil
I don't know what else he could be talking about

"I installed a broken font, and now all my text is funny. Plz help"

@MarcGravell LOL, probably

@Josh Actually on this MacBook with a VM running in the background it takes about a minute including opening a file
Which I wouldn't consider too bad

@Diago Yeah I'm on an old iMac, so it's slooooow :-)
I liked the FHC you made
nice and wavy

9:58 PM
And I maxed out on Meta. Damn.

awww, no more @/me ):

@Josh I suck at them. But the ability to upvote

@Josh, I'm a mod on WebApps, not Cooking.

@rchern Yeah he edited his post :-)
I have the WebApps site bookmarked in my "Sites to check" folder :-)

Why oh why could all these questions not happen a few hours earlier. Then I could have hit the cap two days running.
(sigh)
Anyway. It's now midnight.
Time to go to bed.

10:00 PM
@rchern I keep meaning to check it out, I could do well there :-)
@Diago Sleep Well!

@Josh, you just can't take @Diago anywhere, eh?

@Diago before you go
I will undo my upvote
and upvote tomorrow :-)

@rchern I will take that up with you tomorrow Miss!
@Josh Yours counted. So No!
