@waffles To some degree, the first two, "Offensive, Abusive, or Hate Speech" and "Spam" are synonymous. Think about it...

@waffles Hehe.

Oh boy. I get to help my dad clean malware off his pc over the phone. Fun times.

personally I think 1 more option would be fine ... but I can live with it being a canned option on "notify moderator"

Spam is offensive, and abusive, and certainly hated!

If the end action taken by the moderator is the same, is there a point to having it be different UI options? I guess for tracking/reporting/statistics?

5:01 AM
@waffles but doesn't that double the work load? Unless there's an actual canned string like one or two options that mark it as what's intended

I mean "1 click" -> flag for mod attention -> "2nd click" not an answer
I agree the difference between spam / offensive is not that big
@RebeccaChernoff if we can categorize then we can act on categories in one go
for small sites this matters less, but SO has so much volume

Oh come on. WA doesn't have that much less traffic than SO.

:)

In fact, you might wake up tomorrow and WA could have more traffic than SO.
Oh, sorry, I think I dozed off. Was I dreaming? (;

In fact, I could organize that ... all I need to do is run a few delete statement on the SO db

5:07 AM
LOL

@waffles ... or drop a HTTP redirect from SO to WA :P

WA's traffic has been going up though. Steady wins the race!

@YiJiang yerp totally, I will get our sysadmins on it ASAP

@YiJiang Would only be fair after the chat plot was foiled.

Q: SE site-specific chat doesn't work properly for all host values

Popular Demandhttp://chat.stackexchange.com/?tab=site&host=chat.gaming.stackexchange.com doesn't work as expected. I thought it would show me the chatrooms related to Gaming SE, but I only saw the Web Apps SE room. Another user saw the XMPP chatroom and nothing else. http://chat.stackexchange.com/?tab=sit...

5:14 AM
@waffles I'm sure you saw plenty more bad posts with please: stackoverflow.com/review/…

Is it safe to assume that most people belong to about 2 social networking sites?

@TylerChacha Why would you think that?

@MPelletier Im actually working on a moderator only "batch delete" option in /review :)

@TylerChacha Only one here, unless you count SO as a social networking site. And I don't even go to that one frequently

I'm proposing an idea that for every social network created, all the existing social networks are devalued

5:16 AM
@waffles Might be easier that way.

to do that, I need to create an imaginary world with set rules
One rule needs to define how many social networks a single person can belong to
Belong = Actively participate in over long periods of time

@TylerChacha 42.

@TylerChacha Sounds like fun. Can I tweak the physical constants of the universe instead? I'd like pi to be a nice, round number...

I like how all this new mod stuff is being added now and pro-tem mods on WA are coming to an end. (;
WAY TO TEASE ME

@YiJiang There is no gravity or physics in this universe. Everyone is glued to their chair
Anyway, anyone know of a better/more accurate number?

5:17 AM
@TylerChacha Interesting theory, but what about cross social network integration, like the #fb hash on twitter, and vice-versa?

@TylerChacha pi?

they both feed eachother

@MPelletier I'm putting that factor in the outlier range
Statistically, I'm guessing not a significant number of people actually use that
Besides, when has science ever been about finding the truth anyway..

@TylerChacha There was a formula used in the ealy 90's about the expected power of the Internet. Like 2^n, where n is the number of users...
but maybe not by that much...

5:20 AM
@RebeccaChernoff You really should use the reply feature so I know which of my messages you are disapproving of (:

maybe n^2...?

If I don't, it is generally safe to assume it goes with the one directly on top of it. q:

Don't we have a SE site for these types of statistics?

There's stat.SE but not sure what you mean by these types of statistics.

Ok, well I'm going to work with my number and then research it more later

5:23 AM
There, now I just wait:

 The Overlook Hotel

General discussion for writing.stackexchange.com. Writing exer...

Anyway, @TylerChacha, I was originally asking because it seemed like you were just pulling a number out of a hat. In that case, no I wouldn't say it is "safe to assume". Hehe.

Either way, I'm going to finish writing my proposal and then I'll post it in here and you guys can find all the problems with it

Hm, that didn't actually work

5:44 AM
@waffles I just thought of an interesting filter. But now that I think about it, it's probably well known. Anyways, it would be "low-rep user self-answers". There's gotta be a ton of garbage there.

check against the data dump

Since Facebook was created, all sorts of social networks have popped up over the web. You have Foursquare, Twitter, (various copies of Twitter), Flickr, Friendfeed, Delicious, and a hundred or so more. Each network claims to have its own purpose and benefit the internet. I'm here to claim that more social networks actually are a detriment to the internet, and here is why:

I propose that for every social network that is created on the internet, every other social network becomes less valuable. In an ideal world, you can see this claim play out very easily. To demonstrate this, we are going

@RebeccaChernoff will do. But I really wanted if this was covered already. Most likely is.

Doesn't seem to be a current metric in /review

6:25 AM
@TylerChacha not sure what your proposal is
i read a paper once

I'm proposing the idea that every social network that is created devalues every other one

which was proposing a way of cross-social-n/w integration via some protocols
not sure if it came to life

and that the more networks that come into existance, the less useful it will be

all i have now is OpenSocial and some patent by Yahoo!
the original doc was by a googler i think
humans are very tribal in nature
facebook will succeed in getting together all the humans if they play their cards properly

Do you think my thing makes sense?
It is more of a theory than a proposal for something..
I didn't really know what to call it

6:37 AM
the there will be other rebels who want to be a part of a different tribe which specialize in something.
after all our desire to be unique is not so unique at all
thats why you cant unify all social networks , simple human nature
Yeah i understand it :)

installed the userscripts on her chrome portable installation on her usb key

@Reno That would be @RebeccaChernoff getting annoyed, which would be a good time to run, in case she appears out of nowhere and sabotage your house's plumbing

Ah, 3 am...good time to be waking up, apparently.

sounds more like a bedtime to me (;

I was already doing that whole bed thing. Didn't turn out so well it seems, as I'm up now, heheh.

please wait while Yi Jiang is been resuscitated after been force choked by @RebeccaChernoff

Yi Jiang in progress, please wait.

8:03 AM
Now, to figure out when I actually left..

Anyway, does anyone want to test how well this works?

A: Bring back the 'oldest' sort order for answers

Yi JiangGreasemonkey to the rescue - I've built the StackExchange Oldest Answer Sort Order script that implements the oldest sort order on the client side. Install - Source A few caveats: The script will not run on questions that have more than one page of answers 1 Since the sorting occurs clie...

no, because you're a zombie now

Oh right. @RebeccaChernoff, I loaded the script in Firefox earlier and it just doesn't work. Not sure where the issue is.

@radp Plausibly, but that doesn't mean you can't test that script

8:06 AM
@radp Cute, but I don't play die2nite

@TimStone o: ):

Also, what is that game? Saw a few questions on gaming, but I don't play browser games these days

@RebeccaChernoff It wasn't throwing an error though, so I'm confused what the problem is...I was going to investigate, but I think that's when I got sleepy. Lemme check now. :P

Yeah, I didn't try it in anything other than Chrome. >_<

@TimStone GM hasn't been throwing errors for me when I was writing scripts after the update

8:09 AM
Lemme find out what other browser someone's been using it in.

They might have changed how errors are handled for the last point update

@RebeccaChernoff Well, it worked before. So must be something minor.
@YiJiang I know, that's so damn annoying!

works in firefox 3.6 so i'm told.

@TimStone Hugely - I'm now adding a lot of catch - throw blocks into the scripts I'm debugging

@YiJiang a social browser game that I wouldn't recommend playing over the christmas break, while the "good players" aren't around :P
Also -- it doesn't use jQuery and writes directly against the DOM.
How rude.

8:17 AM
@RebeccaChernoff Hm, it seems to work on the questions page now, I guess, but on the SO main page it seems to be throwing an error

I'm having one hell of a time figuring out what it's talking about though O_o
What the hell..

Hey, a star :)

@radp Erm... userscripts are sandboxed by default - to use jQuery what most GM scripts that run on SO, including your live rep update one do is to inject their source code into a script tag in the body - which is bad, since there's always the possibility of colliding against existing scripts

8:34 AM
@RebeccaChernoff My conclusion is that Firebug is an idiot, and now everything seems to work :p

@YiJiang that's why you limit your functions to scope
@TimStone, no there's an error. The code that checks whether you're on a listing page vs post page is not compatible with the home page >_<
But I totally use the Home page all the time and have totally tested it thoroughly...
Yup.

Oh really?
I'm even more confused then
@RebeccaChernoff There's also a console.log() in the command function for help :p

vicious lies!
hides

Heheh
We all get one free pass, don't worry.

Per hour, right?

8:38 AM
Rather, we all get as many free passes as I happen to need free passes, which I believe totals one right now.

;)

Git Extensions is freezing up every time I try to push my changes. ):

Hm, that's pretty uncool of it :(

@RebeccaChernoff, did you ever get round to trying SmartGit? 2.0 is just out.

8:46 AM
I think I saw that SmartGit cost money and didn't get any farther. #:

"SmartGit can be used free of charge for non-commercial purposes"

I may or may not have seen that line.

puts his money on not

Didn't ask you q:

Although I hear @RebeccaChernoff makes millions from these userscripts, so it's a moot point anyway.

8:48 AM
I'd definitely recommend giving it the benefit of the doubt. It totally blows out of the water the 'git is naff on windows' argument

Have you used Git Extensions? That's what I've got.

@RebeccaChernoff, I did try it briefly, but to be honest by that point I'd got out of the habit of integrated source control
and it felt a bit clunky at the time - but I was in git-apprenticeship-phase, to be fair

Am I gonna be able to figure it out in under 5 minutes?

Yup
I'd say so, mind you it depends - what do you use for compare/merge? You might have to configure that. And tell it about your github accounts
I only drop out of SmartGit now for the real 'heavy' stuff - interactive rebase mostly

Alright, installed and opening. Who has their stopwatch? (;

8:54 AM
we're not going anywhere, take your time :)
(I lie, company nosh-up starts shortly, so I will definitely be going somewhere :)

@RebeccaChernoff I'll use the chat timestamps that Yi Jiang hates.
Also, WTF medical insurance application form.
"The value entered does not match the format of the fied [ C. dob 1] (but we won't let you insert the forward slashes that we use in the formatting example, so hahah)"

Fail @Benjol. Fail.
hides

you're behind! you need to move with the times :)
or install an older version of smartgit...
I upgraded from a far older version of git, with no bad side effects, if that helps

gonna take 4 minutes just to download the newer version of that.

I can stop the stopwatch for that bit :)

8:58 AM
Hehe, that's cheating!

Out of interest, what do you use for merging?

KDiff I think?
Whatever is default most likely, heh.
I've done one, maybe two merges.

takes care of most of the dirty work in advance :P

dunno, I use p4merge, very nice, but you have to fiddle with bash scripts and stuff like that.
I do quite a lot of merges, so...
@TimStone, yeah, I was gonna say, pulling in modifs must create some conflicts surely..

Well, in the case of the userscripts it's usually not that bad given that people work on their own features in separate blocks of the code. Occasionally there are some issues though.

9:01 AM
I have merge conflicts with myself!

Heh :P

Boo. Didn't work the first time.
I might actually have to think.

:O

Unacceptable!
0 right, 5 wrong, 0 ignored, 170 exceptions
Hmmm....
That doesn't seem particularly encouraging :P

@TimStone that means you've been bribed in I guess

9:11 AM
Oh, it's actually not as bad as I thought, I think.

Gah it won't accept the private key file I used in GitExtensions. >_<

:o

Enough for tonight.

Oh, doh!

@RebeccaChernoff, ok. Sorry 'bout that then :)

9:27 AM

I'll get it figured out. Just not now. (; winding down and brain is shutting off hehehe.

Well I'm winding down to Christmas, be my longest break from SO in a while :)

@Benjol The sad part is I probably won't take a break from SO at all during that time, heh. :P
0 right, 175 wrong, 0 ignored, 0 exceptions
\o/

Dammit. I'm stuck in a login loop on chat.se on my iPhone. Won't actually log me in for chat.

9:37 AM
I doubt much is being said there at the moment anyway. ;) That is rather annoying though... tries to repro
status-norepro
You don't seem to have a terrible amount of luck with chat.SE, heh.

@TimStone being away from home is going to help :)

@Benjol I told my dad that I'd come visit him for a few days, but that's not going to change much in my routine, hahah. Are you going somewhere nice?

@TimStone, eh, going to my parents' in the UK, which should be nice, except they've been having horribly sub-zero temperatures recently.

Ah, well enjoy! Hopefully the weather won't be too terrible. :)

thanks.

Last night he was hunting "thank you" answers from newcomers. Using the data dump, I was able to find the first one ever (still in the system): stackoverflow.com/questions/134/…

That's before comments, right?

1:48 PM
@spoulson Oh, could be
I wasn't around back then
That explains why there's a single Posts table too!

Morning everyone

Morn'

@TheUnhandledException Hi

It was a late night last night but, the code I was working on is ready and after I release a new version today and finish up some other misc business tasks, I can take off for four days! Yey!
How is everyone today?

Meh. GF gets to stay home while I go to work
Today and tomorrow morning

1:52 PM
Ug. No fun.

Which oddly feeds the misconceived idea that canadian holidays are all on different date
compared to their american equivalent

I really should look at playing around with <canvas>, but it looks stunningly similar to Flash's drawing API, only worse

@YiJiang Inspired by @Fosco and I?

@TheUnhandledException No, just want to play around with something new

Maybe the three of us can learn together. We should create a chat room to share our creations
@YiJiang cool. I only said that because he and I both mentioned that yesterday
@YiJiang have you seen... (checks bookmarks)

1:56 PM
raphaeljs.com/scape is awesome :)

@TheUnhandledException raphael isn't the same as <canvas>

@DanGrossman I know, that blows my mind
@YiJiang I know, it's more abstract, but it is vector-based drawing inside the browser
I believe it uses canvas on browsers which support it?

@TheUnhandledException Don't think so - <canvas> doesn't support any sort of primitive shapes other than the rectangle

Maybe I am mistaken, it's been weeks since I looked at raphaeljs.com, and months since I looked at it in any detail
@YiJiang You're right, I don't know why I got that idea. Probably because I first discovered raphaeljs.com when researching <canvas>
Morning @mootinator

@TheUnhandledException Mornnin'

2:13 PM
Good morning! Enjoy this image of a robot under an umbrella playing a guitar for a cat in the rain.

Thanks for that little anecdote @Dan... :-)

2:28 PM
OK this makes zero sense

What's that?

I just found a bug with the code I was about to release this morning relateded to zooming in... when I disable the code which scales images up/down as you zoom in, suddenly it magically works
My code has become self-aware...
I no longer need to tell it how to do things, apparently just what the functions are, and it knows how to do them on it's own
that scares me

How are you zooming in/out?

By multiplying the left/top/width/height of all elements by the zoom ratio
Well, all elements except the new elements that I just added for this project
those elements apparently cave in to peer pressure and scale themselves. If I scale them like I do the others, they scale double and are incorrect
(In other words, I am probably already scaling them somewhere else in the code and forgot where because I was tired last night)

Ah ha, hahah :P

2:35 PM
(but my code being self aware is a much cooler explanation :-)
How are you @Tim?

True, true. As for me...I'm awake, which is good I suppose.

Depends. If it's 4am, being awake is less good.

Helpful as always @Dan!
;-)

:snickers:
I think US/Eastern is a deprecated zone name in PHP 5.3 :(

2:39 PM
Well I was awake at 4 am to harass @RebeccaChernoff about leaving a console.log() in the userscript or something, but I'm also awake now, so win-win :P

Eventually that script will break

@TimStone Uh huh... well why not just create a bot to do that or something?

@DanGrossman Somewhere some server is crying
@YiJiang Because you're so good at that already! ;-)

I wonder if I could create a realtime interactive video for this chat room by dynamically generating frames of an animated GIF and trickling them out on a long connection

@DanGrossman You could do that using SVG

2:41 PM
that sounds ... incredibly ... annoying

indeed
I'd keep seeing "oy"s fly by and be unable to star them!

@Zypher You wanna give this teleconference for me to teach people how to prepare this production server? ;)

sure .. lemmie just pull up my notes here

@Dan I know the open source firewall PFSense generates realtime SVG graphs of your bandwith which just continually update

@DanGrossman Sounds interesting, though my low tech method would just be grabbing a screen capture tool and keep the computer on all night

2:43 PM
interesting!

1. Remove A/V
2. Disable Firewall
3. Connect Directly to Internet
4. Do not patch
5. ???
6. PROFIT!

fires up his pfsense vm

Hahahah

Does anyone of you happen to speak Italian?

2:45 PM
Who's a good virus? You ar! Yes you are!

To @radp!

@Pekka @radp there is Italian I think

@Pekka oh hi

Hi @radp, can I ask you a quick language question?

2:45 PM
Sure

Does "saluti invernali" really mean "Seasons greetings"?
I'm updating a web site for a client, I have this translation here and can't reach the translator :)
It sounds so... infernal

@TheUnhandledException You're a Kitty! Yes you are! And you're sitting there! Hi, Kitty!

sounds... salutations of winter?

Sounds like "infernal salutations" which is why I was unsure :)

invierno is winter in spanish, isnt it?
i dont know italian, but theyre similar...

2:47 PM
yeah, it seems to be correct, just googled around

@Pekka We don't have "Seasonal Greetings", too politically correct
"Buon natale!" will do.
(Merry Christmas)

@radp all right, thanks! That's perfect.

If you really need political correctness
"Buone feste!"

move to America
oh sorry, wrong answer ;-)

2:48 PM
@radp Cheers. I think natale will do.
@TheUnhandledException you mean for more political correctness? :)

wtf is that computer the kitty is using?

@TheUnhandledException I keep saying that to the kittenBot, for some reason. I think the presence of it has made everyone a little less intelligent

@Pekka I'm seeing less and less reasons :-)

You have to admit.

@DanGrossman A CatBook

2:49 PM
Encrypted .zip e-mail attachment worms were an ingenious idea.

@mootinator sad but true

oh sorry @TimStone those are the troubleshooting directions comcast gave me when my internet was out

You're a Kitty!

real men debug with <?php echo() ?>
lots of clarifications that "echo is not a function and doesn't require parentheses", but they keep referring to it as echo() instead of echo.

@DanGrossman not required but can be used ... i prefer to use them for formatting consistancy

2:54 PM
the inconsistencies PHP are an acquired taste...
@Zypher likewise

@TheUnhandledException "the inconsistencies of PHP are an acquired taste ... " FTFY

@Zypher Thanks, much improved :-)

@radp You only popped into the JavaScript room to say that? :|
