3:01 PM
I figure this is a perfect time to use @RebeccaChernoff 's Christmas present:

Pfft.
Trying to pass those low-quality, blurry oys as my gift?

(It's an unclear Oy!)

@RebeccaChernoff I'd be offended too.

...
wow @TheUnhandledException

14 hours ago, by Rebecca Chernoff
@The and @Tim, I got the chat room an unclear supply of oys. No mailing address needed.

3:02 PM
UNLIMITED!

Not a supply of unclear oys?
I am disappoint.

@RebeccaChernoff Hence the iOs autocomplete reference being the perfect time to use it ;-)

headdesks

@RebeccaChernoff Don't do that. It's painful!

3:04 PM
I had a super weird dream.
We need DreamAnalysis.SE!

To Area 51!

I would totally use that site

@RebeccaChernoff No, we need rchern.SE to answer all of rchern's questions, specifically for her!

Heh, oy.

And @Rebecca I think my weird dream beats yours, LOL.

3:06 PM
This is a screenshot of my dream.

Well maybe not, actually, on second thought you do an immense capacity for weirdness

That was fucking disgusting.
Where was that from?

Hahah

From my dream. This happened as well.

Yuck
Your dreams have quite a good resolution. What is that, 5-6 Megapixels?

3:09 PM
It depends how close to morning it was. There was a point where everyone was upside down.

Actually this dream isn't all that complicated or weird I suppose. I was a radio dj but that my coworkers from the job I just left were my coworkers at the radio station. I was doing the 6am-?? on-air shift and it snowy and icy and took longer to get to work and so I was running into the studio booth at 6:01. And the HR lady was standing there at the door as I raced in and ... pauses
@DanGrossman, seriously?...

.....:)

Not what I want to see at 9am. Even for a few minutes.

@DanGrossman Thinking too much about rchern here now, are we?

Or 3pm.
Or 10pm.
Or 4am.

3:10 PM
Those all sound like times I wake up.

@RebeccaChernoff Do continue, pay no mind to the nightmare images ;-)

Anyways. Hrmph. So I sit down and the overnight dj has some songs queued up so I let those play and all is good. And just as a song is ending and I'm getting ready to speak on-air, HR lady comes back and asks if I'm busy because she needs me to come with me. So I explain that I'm about to go on-air and she says that isn't important. So I get up but then she sits down and starts looking at the computer. So then she tries to use the phone and even though it's the studio phone...(too lengthy)
It is disabled because it is mine. Or something. So then she's mumbling to herself about it being disabled already. So I'm thinking to myself I'm getting fired and my former boss walks up to me and jokingly asks me what's going of and if I'm getting fired. To which I pretty much reply "I think so actually." But he's good buddies with this boss, so he says that won't happen and not to worry. But then they make me go sit in the break room and mostly shut the door but I can still oy length

takes notes

blah blah blah some of my coworkers come through the break room giving me sad looks and some joke about how silly it is I'm being fired, and then I woke up. >_<
And that took way too long to explain lol.

LOL
Well that kinda makes sense, having a dream about being fired while you're in-between jobs

3:18 PM
Apparently you feel weird about transitioning jobs, and you're really looking forward to being able to listen to the radio without headphones :P

Yeah, like I said, really not all that complicated actually hehe.
@TimStone LOLOL

Apparently my dreams of chat have gotten... worse. I had a dream that I was hanging out with Jeff and Joel, and one other person... not sure who it was, someone from here... but all three were ridiculing me for my lack of seriousness in chat and my lack of intelligent contributions to the community, LOL. I remember trying to defend myself the whole time while we were driving around some city. It was weird!

I'm sorry, but I have to interrupt this dream interpretation session with a small script I wrote:

@TheUnhandledException I'm skeptical it was someone from here then ;)

3:19 PM
var html = ['oy', 'oy', 'oy', 'Oy', 'Oy', 'Oy!', 'oy!', 'oy.'],
    tag = ['span', 'span', 'span', 'span', 'span', 'strong', 'strong', 'em'],
    colors = ['#426F9B', '#81CE39', '#333', 'orange', '#922828'],
    w = window.innerWidth || document.documentElement.clientWidth,
    h = window.innerHeight || document.documentElement.clientHeight,
    limit = 200, count = 0;

function randomize(choice){
    return choice[Math.floor(choice.length * Math.random())];
}

var t = setInterval(function(){
    if(count++ < limit){

@RebeccaChernoff I swear that's the truth, this was Tuesday night :-)

@YiJiang You've already shown that.

Thus one of my New year's resolutions will be to get back on the parent sites ;-)

3:20 PM
Y'all are gonna be like lost little lambs if new job doesn't allow me to be on chat. (; (;

@RebeccaChernoff It's a different one, as you can see

@YiJiang ROFLMAO. The imgur URL for that is "jewMA", like a Jew from Massachusetts... who might say "Oy" XD

@RebeccaChernoff A job which disallows chat hardly seems like a job worth having ;)
2

@RebeccaChernoff No, we'll just hook you up with Grace, who's devised a way to get chat activity without logging in

@TheUnhandledException So uh...normally we stretch things a bit far in here...but uh... :P

3:22 PM
...and move to Chat SE.

Not disallow it. But maybe I'll have actual work to do. Actual and fun work.

@RebeccaChernoff I have that too and clearly it's not stopping me. I just sleep less. :P

@TimStone OK. Maybe it's just because I'm Jewish and from MA that I found that amusing ;-)

OK, fair enough ;)

Yeah...I like sleep.
I may do it at weird times, but I won't do less of it.

3:23 PM
@TheUnhandledException Does that mean that for a few weeks per year you don't get to chat till sunset?

@RebeccaChernoff not allowed on chat! oh noes i don't know what i would do with my day if i couldn't chat ... it fills in the "waiting" (status bar from hell) gaps

@radp I'm not a practicing Jew :-) But ordinarily, yes, sundown on Friday to sundown on Saturday, orthodox Judaism says you can't turn on / off lights, cook, drive, use computers, etc...

patpats Zypher It'll be alright...we'll just all take up (more) drinking.

@Zypher your position is cheating. You can claim you're working on chat.
You know, intrusion tests or load testing or some such.

@radp shhhhh ...

3:25 PM
"What if I chat really hard?"

although i don't think i could get away with that here
nothing work related happens here
nothing NORMAL happens here
2

@radp He already did intrusion tests, did we already forget when chat.stackoverflow.com was password protected?

@Zypher sneak us in Bonfire. Problem solved! :P

3:26 PM
there is no bonfire

They infiltrated our castle. ):

erm i thought we pwnd it

Oh, which reminds me...for some reason.
@RebeccaChernoff Did you see the feature request on GitHub? I lolzed. :P

Yeah

3:27 PM
or is there a newer one?

No, that one.
Someone even commented on it.

Yeah, I told him on chat that it wouldn't be able to do that.
Just haven't closed it yet.

Ah, OK. :P

@Zypher pffffffffft

I figured you were even more on your way towards claiming credit for chat, what with people coming to you with features only the actual chat could support ;)
In which case @Zypher could just claim to be in here keeping an eye on us on Marc/balpha's behalf :P

3:29 PM
I've had people thank me for writing the chat. Before the userscript I think.

By the way @Rebecca:

Sleeping

Proposed Q&A site for sleeping enthusiasts about sleeping patterns, power napping, sleeping positions, waking up, dreaming, etc.

Currently in defintion.

But "What does my dream mean" is voted as offtopic

I'm not really sure that dream needs all that much analysis. q:

but we are geeks we over-analyze everything
sheesh

3:30 PM
That's the problem, dream analysis is by definition subjective
So I doubt there'd be a SE site about it, much to my disappointment

Well it took me around 4 full chat messages to explain it. Go forth and over-analyze if you must. (;

Dream analisys of @rchern's dream I haven't even read: not enough jQuery.
Correct with more jQuery.

> This event is late by 30 minutes, 30 seconds
Hmm...
shakes head

^ After a few runs of the script. I think we can safely say that we do have an unlimited supply of oy s

3:32 PM
@YiJiang thus making each one of them worthless.
A good reason to stop starring "oy"

@radp They're like the cobblestone of chat.

Y'all are the only fools who think they're worth anything. (:
'Tis just a word!

@TimStone do they offer good resistance to creepers?

@radp That appears to be a pretty thick wall of oys, so perhaps.
I'm not willing to test that scenario myself though.
I wonder when this meeting is going to start... yawns

3:42 PM
They work together! :)

For the record, I used to say oy before it became a trend. Carry on.

I don't say it because it is a trend.
But apparently I say it a lot.
Heh.
I've said it for years. shrugs

Dunno why it is such a big deal.

Hahahah

3:45 PM
@RebeccaChernoff It's ok :) I'm just kidding

@RebeccaChernoff I'm sure someone's to blame.

I wasn't defending. Just kind of shaking my head at the ridiculousness.

@RebeccaChernoff I'm sure Jon Skeet also does that sometimes

Ha. Probably. (:

@RebeccaChernoff of Jeff Atwood not liking "oy"?

3:48 PM
It is pretty ridiculous that every single time I say oy, it gets starred...
11
Just saying. (;

I'm starring that
done

oof.
Like I said.

I guess it's just funny

Maybe the first billion times. q:

@RebeccaChernoff Maybe the stars are agreeing with the ridiculousness. ;)

3:51 PM
Heh.

@RebeccaChernoff ... or maybe it's my script doing it's job.
Oct 16 at 15:59, by Yi Jiang
$('div.signature:contains("rchern"').livequery(function(){
    if($(this).siblings('.messages:contains("oy!")')){
         $(this).siblings('.messages').find('.stars .vote').click();
     }
});

|BEGIN| ...................... | WHEN NORMAL PEOPLE STOP| ...........................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................................|WHEN CHAT.META STOPS|

@RebeccaChernoff Bad news, people here never got tired of unicorns. Even after the first several billions.

The search claims that your first starred oy by itself was this one, in which case it's @TheUnhandledException's fault for encouraging oy starring. For some reason I'm highly skeptical though, since I can't believe that none were starred before that.

@Zypher the message length restriction prevents this scenario from being accurately represented. q:

3:54 PM
@RebeccaChernoff i know
:(

@Zypher Looks like a clusterf*ck to me, seems like an accurate representation. :P

haha ok then
uhg, so we are back to download managers now ... activex and java instead of C++ this time around
sometimes the computing industry cycles make me sad

Download managers inspire so much hate in me.

3:57 PM
amen.

Oh crap, I have to show my screen... hides chat

Accurate enough?

Heh.
Probably not if it is too scale. q:

Maybe it's logarithmic...
@RebeccaChernoff Last night I mentioned self-answers as potential fodder for cleanup. I started fiddling with SEDE. There are 124k self-answers :/

@RebeccaChernoff Unstar!
Oh hey, that wasn't the last message.
These oys covering my screen are ruining everything.

4:11 PM
How's this for accuracy then?

4:34 PM

Well that question, well, yawn just your typical "OMG WHAT IS JON SKEET DOING NOW" question

Yeah, as opposed to asking when he sleeps and getting his daily schedule. (;

Hmmm... what's the worst combination of tags possible on a SO question? Something like:
in JavaScript on Stack Overflow Chat, 1 min ago, by lonesomeday
I always get nervous when I see a question has both the javascript tag and the sql tag

Oooh, yeah.

[java] + [javascript] is an obvious one, although there are legitimate questions

@YiJiang Like, "How can I use JavaScript to communicate with my applet?"

[regex] + [html] is another obvious one, of course.

5:26 PM
....aaaaaaaaand Flash crashed inside Chrome :-(
That sucks
[regex] + [html] == Massive Rep Gains
In one specific instance anyway ;-)

hah

[div] + [html | css | javascript] usually reduces the likelihood of me opening up that question

Let's see if it's just Flash/Chrome under linux which my system crashes...
Yey! Works on Mac
Now to put the product through it's paces....
Awesome. I now declare Chrome to be supported by our product
Why didn't I do this before the Holiday season? :-/

@YiJiang but it won't backspace anywhere before the point where is quite funny

5:50 PM
I am fairly new to OOP with PHP.
What variables do I need to declare at the beginning of a class?

I am fairly experienced with OOP in PHP -- how can I help?
@user10926 Depends on what the class will do
can you give us more detail?

You can see what I current declare in my classes at bre ndantho mas.m d/relea se (remove spaces) under the control arch
I am not sure what to declare, or when to use private, public, protected

for example if I had a Student class I'd probably want public $name; public $birthday; public $address; public $schedule;
@user10926 What does one of your classes represent?
I'll walk you through the logic of what to declare and what visibility to use

thanks

Although I have a meeting in 5 minutes, so I don't have too much time :-)
Give me an example of what kind of class you're trying to create
For example I see you create a class Registry. What is a Registry? What data is it comprised of?

6:02 PM
the register contains meta data for any particular page

OK. Then you'll need a member variable for the metadata
Can any other code change that metadata, or is it in a specific format / does your register class need to take specific actions when the metadata is modified?

No code changes the meta data
I do declare private $store;

Good. That's correct. Then, you can expose the metadata read-only via member functions
If you made $store public, other code could change it, which is not what you want

ok
that makes sense

Feel free to give me more examples, I have a few minutes more

6:07 PM
well, in my ActionController, do I need to declare a pageDir or template variable?

What does ActionController need to do?

I use a $this->pageDir and $this->template but I do not declare them

You should always declare any member variable you use

It checks for an action, and then displays a view through a template

unless, of course, it's a "virtual" member variable (provied via the magic functions __get() and __set() )
@user10926 So yes, you should declare those variables

6:10 PM
You people are way to techy for me

again, if other code can change them (I.E. to set the template to be used) make them public
If other code cannot change them, make them protected or private
Or, if you need to take an action when they're changed, make the member variables protected or private and create methods which change the member variables and take some action
You may then want to expose those methods through function __set() to create "virtual" public member variables
For example, if pageDir must be a valid directory at all times, you could do:
private $pageDir;
function setPageDir($newValue) {
  if(!is_dir($newValue)) throw new Exception("Invalid Directory");
  $this->pageDir = $newValue;
}
function __get($key) {
  if($key == 'pageDir')  return $this->pageDir;
  return null;
}
function __set($key,$val) {
  if($key == 'pageDir')  $this->setPageDir($val);
  return null;
}
@user10926 ^^

A: Can I use regular expressions to search for multiples of a number?

ircmaxellHere you go (In PHP's PCRE syntax): ^(0*|(1(01*?0)*?1|0)+?0{4})$ Usage: preg_match('/^(0*|(1(01*?0)*?1|0)+?0{4})$/', decbin($number)); Now, why it works: Well we know that 48 is really just 3 * 16. And 16 is just 2*2*2*2. So, any number divisible by 2^4 will have the 4 most bits in its b...

Also, I always name protected / private member variables my Whatever, so I'd say myPageDir, but, that's my convention.

@TheUnhandledException - thank you, that makes sense

@ircmaxell Very crafty, that.
Doesn't help him search his source code, but +1 for cleverness

6:18 PM
hehehe...
I realized that long after, but was too taken aback that I could do it...

@user10926 You're welcome! I am going to head to my meeting now. @ircmaxell is quite knowledgeable in this area as well, so I'm sure he's be happy to help you also :-)

A: Why I can't see a real point for using OOP?

ircmaxellHere's the crux of the issue. As has been said before, there are tradeoffs to each and every paradigm. OOP has a lot of benefits, but it also has some negatives as you point out. The key is weighing them. OOP is founded on the principal that developers are expensive and hardware is cheap. It...

Oh ok, I met a very talented young programmer (15 IIRC) at a conference and was curious if it was you. (there was another, younger person there as well, 12 and ran circles around most other devs). Really impressive...

@MichaelMyers It is a lot like Google's Web Search. I nailed one really great answer, and am looking around for the next one
Actually, most of my answers are great .. they just aren't as public
One of the reasons that answer got such a great reception is because the question is one of the highest voted PHP questions

There's positive thinking!

@Tyler: I'm similar. I use "frameworks" as a set of libraries. Tools to pick from rather than a scaffold... I build the architecture to the needs of the project...

@ircmaxell I had to look that one up.
