4:00 PM
Heh. I was actually just questioning whether or not you're calling me a redhead? (;

Again, this is what I get for trying to debug and chat simultaneously. Why isn't the system reding my fonts? What kind of readhead joke can I make here in chat?
@RebeccaChernoff Hard to tell, your Gravatar has a slight reddish tint. But that could be @YiJiang 's Christmas script playing tricks on my eyes ;-)

:home from buying 7 christmas cards, 4 amazon gift cards, a lowes gift card, a visa gift card, wrapping paper:

bah, my backyard is flooded
and we can't find the drain..

your yard has a drain?

4:04 PM
yes

:pictures a half acre bath tub:

Argh. I found the bug I was looking for, it's a nasty one. grumbles
Looks like you'll be free of me for a while @Rebecca ;-)

PARTY TIME!
3

HAMMER TIME!

@TylerChacha Can I negative star that?
5

4:07 PM
(;

Can't touch this :)

Oh, not my message?
In that case, I believe it is called a flag. (:

LOL. I think the mods' patience with me flagging stuff has worn thin ;-)

Who are the mods?

hides
@DanGrossman the people in blue!

4:10 PM
@DanGrossman Their names appear blue
Hey @balpha! Say something!

something

@balpha Thanks. see @Dan? :-)

How much do they pay you for that?

Hey @balpha! Ban @MichaelMrozek!

@Dan ALOT OF MONIEZ

4:11 PM
@DanGrossman $85,000 internet dollars a year is the going rate, I think
wow @Dan has the magic touch, all the mods speak now :-)

Where do I have to move to obtain this job?
Do I get stock options for when Microsoft buys out SO to replace MSDN?

@DanGrossman This comment fills me with such fury I am at a loss regarding how to respond

"You have fully used your vote allowance for today" NOOOOOOOOOOO...!!!

@RebeccaChernoff Wait, what'd I do?

rut roh, you are here. q:
I didn't do it! It wasn't me!
(;

4:14 PM
Quickly @MichaelMrozek, to the dev tools!

@TheUnhandledException some of use get more than internet dollars :-D

@Zypher Oh yes, I know :-)

@Zypher Yeah, there's unicorn dollars too!

exactly ;-)

exactally!

4:16 PM
teehee

@Zypher also get lots of fun servers to play with :-D

Hey Josh, check this link: books.google.com/…

i love me some servers

@drachenstern checked it, sure does appear to be a link alright

I could probably be convinced to work for SO for reputation instead of money. Which is a bit sad

4:17 PM
@drachenstern Oh, you meant read it?

@Zypher ever run into a situation with multiple PCI bridges chained as in video cards?

I have a very important question to ask all of you:
.user-140548 + .messages .content:after {
  /* What should go here? */
}

@TheUnhandledException the first page or two if it comes up to a book scan

@YiJiang OY! of course

4:18 PM
I know, sorry, I'm giving you a hard time :-)

@TheUnhandledException ;)

@drachenstern errm what? who thought that was a good idea?

Which is a bad idea since you're trying to help me, LOL

@Zypher video card vendors

sigh no i can't say I have run into that

4:19 PM
as a way to put more processing on PCI lanes back when there were not so many options (aka PCIe)

When I saw PCI I assumed it was a book about the payment card industry.

@TheUnhandledException in this case I am just stuffing your head with more hardware knowledge

@drachenstern as much as it embarrasses me to admit it, this is somewhat over my head, LOL

@Zypher just a heads up if you WERE to come across any then ;) LSPCI would show the devices, but some apps (X used to be this way) won't be able to talk to them. Windows needs a hotfix/patch

hahahaha grreeeaaat

4:20 PM
And not the kind of patch you can download from MSDN, the kind you have to have correspondence and get a link privately

@Zypher This is re: a weird USB camera crossover issue I am experiencing on my new anti-crazy-stalker security system I have set up :-)

@drachenstern ehh talking to MS is not an issue for us :-D

Since it came up I thought I might share some things I learned once upon a time

1
Q: What would cause "crossover" between two USB2 webcams when using motion?

JoshI am using the Motion package for linux to act as a security system with two Microsoft LifeCam HD-5000 webcams. In general it's working very well but I'm experiencing a weird issue. Every now and then the feed from one cam will exhibit "crosstalk" or "crossover" from the other cam, in sweeping ba...

@TheUnhandledException bah, you just gotta learn more hardwares ;)

4:21 PM
@drachenstern This is true :-)

@Zypher hehehe, I know, but I've seen it happen in both MS and Linux lands ;)
@TheUnhandledException plus I'm good at stuffing useless knowledge into people's heads.

excellent ... and more knowledge is always a plus :D
2

@Zypher Agreed!

And if you REALLY want to learn hardware, I can suggest no better starting place than arstechnica and Jon Stokes articles from when he was doing the CPU articles (mostly only findable via google, not via arspaedia)

@The: Go to your local computer shop, spend $10 on a PCI usb adapter, and try it...

4:23 PM
actually they might have finally fixed those now that I look at the page again
/afk
@ircmaxell yeah, that was my tl;dr version ;)

@ircmaxell I have one in the G4 server next to it, I will cannibalize that one to test with. I just don't want to power them both down right now.
My precious uptime!!!

nope, it's broken still :(

Woo Hoo, thanks to whoever just upvoted that question, I can now cast close votes on Unix.SE!

Hmm. Skype was down? I didn't notice getting kicked off.

ok good, so it wasn't just us. My skype (and my bosses) just crashed about 15 mins or so ago
meh, 30 minutes?

4:26 PM
Though I wasn't on a call or anything.

My laptop (where Skype lives) is asleep, so I'll just assume it never happened.

@drachenstern sweet, thanks, I'll check that out sometime. when I have time, LOL

@TheUnhandledException lol, that's what I always say ;)
I have a list of 70+ links on gmail that I want to read or revisit :S

hehehe

4:29 PM
@TheUnhandledException but when you goto read them, try and dig up articles from as far back as you can for him and read forward. He does a really good breakdown and from my EE and CS formal education I'ld say he's pretty spot on but he explains it well. It'll carry you through Celeron's into Core series and cover a bit of the entire architecture along the way.
I've also learned northbridge/southbridge stuff from poring over Intel documentation amongst other sources, which is always fun, when you have NO clue what you're looking for ;) ... I do know that they have some complex silicon on those boards tho.

@drachenstern northbridgs/southbridge is SOOOOOO 1990's

@Zypher I know right? However, I still had to support 486's at my last job (industrial stuff that hasn't changed since that day) and plenty of ISA boards.

ooo nice

Did you know you can get a system with a Core series CPU and a set of ISA slots?

By the power of Flying Spaghetti Monster, **please** let there be macaroni & cheese for lunch today!
^^ YES I agree
@drachenstern wait what? Where?

4:34 PM
@Zypher ooooh, I actually do get some :D .... we're doing the office luncheon today and I'm the one bringing the Mac*Chz :D
@Zypher I knew that would picque your interest, working on a link
pair this board (with appropriate CPU/RAM chips, etc) advantech.com/products/PCA-6011/… with this backplane: advantech.com/products/PCA-6114P7-0D3E/… and stuff it in this chassis advantech.com/products/IPC-610-L/… (but if you were gonna order this stuff tell me I got the hookup)

@TheUnhandledException Updated. Although, seriously speaking, the color scheme is extremely gaudy, I assure you it is completely usable - I've checked that all of the colors don't clash - I used it for about two hours now... and I want to dig my eyes out

That would give you up to 5 working ISA sockets, or 7 working PCI sockets, depending on where you put the SBC on the backplane

Hang on, I just found a bug. Hmmm...

Sadly I don't see an option to pair the latest PCIe backplanes with ISA, hopefully they've figured out it's a lost cause
*they being "the end customers needing ISA boards"

oh my i can run dos 6.2 on a core processor ... hmmm

4:43 PM
@Zypher need a 300MHz CPU to run only ISA apps on an ISA only backplane? try this puppy out advantech.com/products/PCA-6742/…

btw pet peve hardware vendors make you boot to DOS to flash your firmware but give you no way to boot to DOS so you have to go searching all over the intertubes for a boot image that doesn't require a floppy

it's the only way to travel man

f that noise
i don't even really use cd/dvd's anymore

I used 'em for 4 years on floppyless systems with no problem

oh no i know ... i just ... hate them irrationally
it's time to move on from floppies man

4:45 PM
@Zypher well yeah, we all do ;)
@Zypher I know a guy pushing USB media as the next distribution channel for rental content

although what is worse is places that ONLY give you a windows EXE program that you have to hack the files out of

he figures rotating media is dead

@drachenstern nah online man on line

@Zypher I know right?
@Zypher I didn't say I thought that. I've argued him till I'm blue in the face

Why would you replace cheap discs with expensive flash memory? Plastic and foil versus extremely complex (tolerance-wise) microscopic circuitry...

4:47 PM
god just thinking of the infrastructure to run an online streaming service makes me drool a little

@DanGrossman size and capacity and durability
@Zypher only the pipes make me drool, well that and the disk arrays ;)

haha, oh man the disk arrays are fun ... but man the core networking to do it right ... drool

nobody even runs their own
if you want to run the networks that run online streaming, you work for a cdn
netflix = akamai now, level3 soon

You ever play with any distributed computing there @Zypher? I know some guys into big supercomputing, like condor or I know some guys doing crunching on the LHC data ~ I got to attend ISSGC'09 and talk with these guys and gals

@DanGrossman yea i know ... work for them never (why would i leave so ? :) but just designing how i would do it as a mental exercise
@drachenstern nah not really supercomputing is nifty but never really got into it

4:52 PM
@Zypher you might actually like it ... lots of raw power being directed at one task, lots of SANs and backend stuff

my cable box doesn't have HDMI out, and my google TV box only has HDMI in

@YiJiang LOL
I mwill check out the new color scheme later, need to finish bugfixing first

of course, when the LHC is turning out TB of data a day, and it's being processed in real time for specific events, well, that takes a lot of pipe ...

mmm
geek porn

yep, and so back to SQL trudging I go ;)

4:57 PM
i'm constatntly hitting refresh on my mail client waiting for the lunch email

Comast support chat is so odd. They inject ads for xfinity into the conversation at random intervals.

hahaha
I avoid those chat support systems like the plague

I just asked if I could swap my cable box for one that has an HDMI port. She says yes, sure, just go to your local cable office and they'll do it on the spot. Hope I solved your problem today!
I add... "Just to be sure, this doesn't cost extra?"
"It will be $8 per month"
oh... shoulda said that!!

hrm? is your current box not an HDTV box?

5:04 PM
no, just "digital cable"

ah yea
HDTV boxen cost more

my digital is not digital enough

it's also about 4x the size of a regular digital box

gawd
I've got enough boxes, no thanks

haha
yep .. oo lunch ... awww no mac and cheese

5:06 PM
messy

5:18 PM
@Zypher Even the HD boxes aren't/weren't all HDMI
They pulled a Microsoft and used those annoying component cables

Any Flash experts around?

@TheUnhandledException I haven't touch it in two years and have never worked with AS3, but erm... go on

Q: Can Flash detect missing embedded fonts and/or replace with available fonts?

JoshI have a flash application which loads external .swf files containing embedded fonts, so that these fonts can be used within the main application. However, sometimes the requested font is not available in the external .swf file which is loaded -- this often happens when someone makes changes to t...

Stoopid sister :( I can't even keep track of her long enough to get her a christmas card

@TheUnhandledException Way beyond my level, sorry.

5:26 PM
No problem :-) Thanks anyway

@TheUnhandledException It doesn't do that automatically?

@TimStone Nope. If I set the text to a font that's not available, it just disappears
@Tim as you know of my product, this is for our card customizer, and the issue is, version 2.1 which I we're working on will allow website owners to change fonts available at will
but the issue is, if they remove fonts that customers are/have been using, then the customers' text will just disappear! And then I get called :-)

Hm, how are you setting the text? The Flash Player should fallback to some default font, but I guess it doesn't in some circumstances.

Skype is down!!!1111 says the intarwebs. I'm logged in fine though.

@TimStone textBox.htmlText = htmlVar
or

5:33 PM
And the font?

var my_fmt:TextFormat = new TextFormat();
my_fmt.font = font;
my_fmt.size = size;
my_fmt.color = color;

editorMovie.Editor.activeTxt().setNewTextFormat(my_fmt);

Ah

er
@TimStone On initial load, we just send the textbox the HTML containing the font(s), color(s) and size(s)
so a customer might have <P ALIGN="LEFT"><FONT FACE="Myriad" COLOR="#FF0000" SIZE="24">Merry Christmas!</font></p>

@TimStone oh i know ... they "ran out" of HDMI ones when they came to my house to set it up a while ago even though i SPECIFICALLY requested HDMI

but if the font pack .swf no longer has "Myriad" due to website owner removing it, then textBox.htmlText = htmlVar produces a big nothing
text is there, just invisible :-)

5:38 PM
Ah, yeah that would make sense in this situation, since you're feeding in an HTML string. I have an idea, but I've got to run out to meet someone for lunch now, so I'll test it when I get back and let you know if it works.
@Zypher Ugh yeah, and trying to shove one of those ridiculous cables they use behind the box was...problematic. Like some massive ribbon or something. Bastards :P

@TimStone awesome, thanks!
I'm headed to lunch also
@Tim, I just edited. We're using: txt1.embedFonts = true;
if there's any way to detect when this happens, I can handle the rest! :-)

@Zypher did you get mac & chz?, oops, nm, just saw :410262

@drachenstern yea :(

@TheUnhandledException is there anyway to do something like this: maratz.com/blog/archives/2006/08/18/… ?
Also, when you call ExternalInterface.call("flashReady", _root.lcId, true); you have a commented out line. Does that line not work?
Can the ExternalInterface not give you a list of what it JUST loaded?

they'll probably have it next week when i'm not in the offcie

5:50 PM
@Zypher they always do
@TheUnhandledException can I suggest w3schools.com/tags/att_font_face.asp just putting a DEFAULT font as a fallback when you generate the tag? That would alleviate part of the concern. Then make it a training issue when your text shows up in Comic Sans you didn't follow the directions
/afk, FOOOOOOOODDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD

Hah!
I herd they like tiers, so I put tiers in their tiers to they can delegate while they delegate.

@drachenstern but lunch was still tasty

Interesting choice by the oneboxer

6:11 PM
@MichaelMrozek why so?

@Zypher It truncated the left side of the image

'ahh

I guess it's twitpic's fault, not the oneboxer

6:28 PM
that's the spirit

Hello

6:43 PM
Hi.

7:12 PM
@drachenstern Damn, that was a great idea but it looks like that only works in Flex, not Flash (AS2)
@TimStone in case it helps, I edited my question to add the short, short version

@mootinator What reason?

@MichaelMrozek Looks ,like it's a secret :-)

Bwahaha.
Said 3 instances of the same SSN is 3 duplicates, not two.
But you don't normally consider 1 row a duplicate of itself.

Yeah I upvoted to compensate, it made sense to me

I just deleted my whining because I whine too much.

7:20 PM
@mootinator Ha! I guess you haven't been around when I am, I think my whining tops yours ;-)
isn't that what this room is for, to vent your frustrations? :-)

@TheUnhandledException I thought it was for starring oy and talking about unicorns.

that too :-)
OK. Headed to a meeting, bbl!

@TheUnhandledException what? You can't override the OnRender of the tagwriting? That's bogus! New idea, use more jQuery! ;) ... no but seriously, you can't either override it on generate or just before displaying and add that on the XML nodes? It is like XHTML yes?
@mootinator nah, it's for whining about yourself. Ya want starring, ya goto chat.SO/javascript. Ya want unicorns you goto MSO. Ya want Oys ...well you're in the right place for Oys
@TheUnhandledException tis a tavern after all ;)
@TheUnhandledException I'm sure you've seen this, but just in case not, here 'tis: actionscript.org/forums/…
@TimStone @RebeccaChernoff @YiJiang @mods WHY OH WHY OH WHY does the damned chat window blow away my text if I paste something (nominally a URL) in? I like to type logically, pasting when needed, rather than pasting, then typing. Heaven forbid if I want to use two pastes ... (notepad comes in handy). Is this a chrome issue?

Heh.

Also, who killed Skype?

7:34 PM
Guilty as charged.

Oh so you did it?
Good thing we just got Communicator installed ... otherwise I wouldn't be able to talk to my team (oh wait, is that a bad thing?)

We've got our IRC bot saying "Ho Ho Ho!" 10% of the time. Turns out that gets old really fast

What's the IRC channel for?

Just talking

lol, I guess I meant the topic/group?
guess you could use an IRC for a MUD or DnD tho eh? or a really crazy ascii movie

7:44 PM
@balpha (I guess that was you) that's... cute!

@radp If you mean what I think you mean -- yes, that was me :)

@drachenstern Just general conversation. We were all in the same Linux group in college

wonders what shenanigans @balpha was/is up to

@RebeccaChernoff your cache is outdated

7:57 PM
@RebeccaChernoff I want to know too ...
Do you mean the shooting star?

No that's been there hasn't it?

yes, for about two hours
:)
