Oh, well that unicorn is ok to eat from I suppose.

Although, I guess it is a bit tough to pay attention if you're drunk, so, your story is believeble @Zypher ;-)

12:10 AM
yes but hitler drank!
/conversation

@drachenstern So long for now :P

Q: So eclipse and xdebug walk into a bar, and then my apache server dies

MattI am using windows xp, wamp, apache2, php 5.3, eclipse php, and xdebug, running on localhost as both a virtualhost and an https virtualhost I had sucesfully managed, somehow, to setup eclipse and xdebug and all was well. Then I had to make an svn branch of my project, and reconfigure apache wit...

since there's a serveradmin and several php'ers in here, anybody got any ideas on that one? and I LOVE his title.
ciao

12:13 AM
real men debug with <?php echo() ?>

@drachenstern Am not.
I was wallowing in self-pity over not having a drink poured for me and not doing something else at all.

am i the only one that still writes interpreted language code in .. you know ... a text editor ??

I use jEdit for everything. Everytime I try an IDE I get fed up before I even get things configured

12:17 AM
I wrote a program that takes all of my thoughts and converts them into flawless code
that was the last time I ever used an editor

Whan I was writing C I still used vi.
But that's so 2007.

@mootinator i still write 90% of my stuff in vi ;)

The reason Triton exists is because I decided to test out the program while sleeping

ah that explains alot
:-D

bbiab

12:27 AM
@moot leaves and everyone stops talking ... are you all his sock puppets?

Mebe
I'm only here for a moment before leaving again of course

@Zypher I am following his instructions and working
That, and also I want to have Christmas off, so...
My code has teh bugz

aww that is sad
but why does you code have teh bugz

because the programmer made teh mistakez
I blame the sock

hrm

12:32 AM
@TheUnhandledException A better explanation would be because the programmer was chatting all day instead of working...

Welcome @Remou

Terrible reason there sock

LOL
I am headed off to find some food, that will help me code beter. catch you guys later!

@The Hi
A bar, hmm a good place to lurk and read :)

Q: How to recover reputation and badges from when I was an unregistered user stackoverflow.com

IberoMediaI posted some question in stackoverflow.com, I got some badges and reputation; I cleaned cookies in browser and now I am not able to continue asking under that unregistered user. Is there a way for me to recover that reputation, badges, and history?

Q: I posted some question in stackoverflow, I got some badges and reputation; I clean my cookies recovery

I posted some question in stackoverflow, I got some badges and reputation; I cleaned cookies from browser and now I am not able to continue using the same user I was. How can I recover, register and recover, this user?

Deja vu
Or should I say "Deja qu"?
You can edit on the iPhone, for the last one

Someone convince me not to recklessly spend money. :P

1:08 AM
@Zypher I have to assume so.

Give it to me tim
Pretend you're going to

Hit the rep cap on Meta. \o/

@drachenstern I'm not sure that has the same cost-benefit ratio..

Yatta!
I was trying ... iPhone

shakes fist at temptation

1:12 AM
Ok Tim 5 why's you should buy it
Rubber duck the analysis

You want to be talked out of it, let's hear it ...

I just want a unique shiny thing, but I know it's not worth putting up this kind of money for, heh.

I think he already bought it, taking so long
What unique shiny thing?

I'm playing NFS to distract myself.
Eh..
Looking at the amount again I think I've convinced myself just to let it go. :P

1:19 AM
So what was the gewgaw?

You're going to think I'm insane :P
I matched the bid on this
But that's an excessive amount of money for just that, so.

HELL HATH NO FURY LIKE A WEB APPLICATION DOWN ALL DAY!!!!

@drachenstern Just to be clear, I'm normally very, very conservative with my money, which may have been what provoked me to try, heh. :P

room topic changed to The Tavern (General): Hell hath no fury like a drunken man with a keyboard.

500 I would tho, on account of the charity. A new boxed set is normally 60-80 especially for with lots of extras. A complete set is usually worth slightly more too. With posters for a collector, not overly egregious at 500. 700 I too would stop

@drachenstern Yeah, then I got the gambler's logic where "Well, it would suck if I didn't win just because I didn't go $10 higher", but :P
In unrelated news, my university ranks #12 on the list of top paying colleges by PayScale.com apparently.

You work for a uni?
Gamblers logic does suck

1:37 AM
@drachenstern Nah, it was based on average mid-career salaries by university attended

@moot +1 upvote on the comment to Jeff re tipping

1:58 AM
cricket sounds

Heh :P

Don't blame me I'm on my phone

Don't blame me, I voted for Nader

Don't blame me, I'm italian..

2:15 AM
@drachenstern Does my compromise sound workable to you?

2:34 AM
Link me?

A: Tip Feature for Helpful Chatters/Commenters

Jeff AtwoodI think this runs counter to the entire philosophy of chat. It is a "third place" that has a different flow, and a different set of dynamics than "home" (Stack Overflow) and "work" (Meta Stack Overflow). http://blog.stackoverflow.com/2010/04/do-trilogy-sites-need-a-third-place/ Chat is more aki...

Oh gawd, "CityVille" just bugged on me. shakes fist in Zynga's general direction

I'm personally still not 100% on that one. I think Jeff is ignoring that we commonly have our friends to our house and we routinely go to the pub with same said friends. We may or may not work with our friends, but we assuredly ask our friends for work advice. Same set of general scenario for our coworkers. More complete thoughts when I get back to a real keyboard.

a tip feature?

@RebeccaChernoff My next suggestion is going to be a rep blackjack table and rep VLTs.

2:50 AM
I like blackjack. ^__^
...and... very large telescope?

@RebeccaChernoff Why not? It could be useful for the astronomy proposal :P

Obviously.

Hehe :)
A Video Lottery Terminal or VLT is a gaming machine that allows gamblers to bet on the outcome of a video game. A VLT is similar to a slot machine, except that it is connected to a centralized computer system that determines the outcome of each wager using a random number generator. Although the outcome of each wager is random, VLT operators are able to program in advance the total amount and number of payouts that its central computer system will allow at its connected VLTs. In this manner, VLTs can be thought of as computerized scratch-off lottery tickets. Canada New Brunswick was the ...

@drachenstern Hm, damn. Looks like $700 is going to win it after all. But, I can buy those new graphics cards I wanted with that money, so. :P

Matt ShermanThis one was my fault. UPDATE: Our 5 Why Assessment of the situation Problem: there is an alert on every page of Stack Overflow Why? @RebeccaChernoff Well played :P

3:03 AM
Hey @TimStone, you test out the new version of SEKeyboardShortcuts by any chance? Just curious, no pressure.

Hello

Im probably late to notice, but [firstname] [surname] convention seems to be growing

Do you really think my surname is Chacha?

Who knows ... isn't it?
People round here have surnames like shufflebottom and fingersniff so

Click here and find out goo.gl/AQBqE

3:05 AM
@RebeccaChernoff Hrm, no... writes a note to self
Would probably help if I stop sleeping so much, not sure what's up with that :P

Ah. oh well, makes no odds to me lol

I need to clean up my blog

Any drama been happening lately?

it looked alright for a while, but it should look cleaner/more in-line with the rest of my sites

saving the usual @YiJiang hijinks, smileys and stars

3:07 AM
@TimStone You could just install it now. (;

@AidenBell We couldn't be up to proper shenanigans without you around, of course ;)

Enough Drama for you?

@TimStone - well I have been boring reading code.google.com/web/ajaxcrawling/docs/specification.html and dreaming of pure HTML+Javascript+REST apps that are google friendly
@TylerChacha - the usual then lol
Also "Fatal Error: Class DateTime not found"

blink

@AidenBell Ah ha, I see.

@TimStone - Don't know if you recall an API+Parallel Front-end development model I was banging on about a while back. The crawling issue was a show-stopper. That article is interesting, though using HTMLUnit is a bit dirty, id rather see a dedicated DOM generator like a headless Firefox, only without the 200year startup time. Google "pywebkit GNU" is interesting, but early days.
Can't be that hard, V8/Jaegermonkey+DOM bindings+buffer maintainer
Also, question to all: Does anyone really use SSI?
as in Server Side Includes

3:28 AM
Ah yeah. I hadn't even considered that at the time.
Heh, I haven't even heard anyone mention that in the longest time :P

@TimStone - well, I want to serve just HTML+JS ... but that leaves server-side templating. I don't want to bring PHP or Python in there really
I would rather use a sed script! Which is practically SSI

3:45 AM
Peace. I hate the word. As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee.

Quoting Shakespeare are we?

Crap! Somebody reboot @mootinator. He's gone all offkilter.

I had a dream last night. And it hit me like a druuuuuug.
Dammit!
That's not even a real lyric from that song. Wow, talent.

4:02 AM
@Dan u on?
Curious to see what IP I report as and get geolocated to
Somebody on a pc able to link me to his script easily?

4:18 AM
@drachen sorry ... but that room was meant to be private ... turns out SO devs do not know how to use chat

Lol, no prob. On my phone being nosy ;)
Was curious why it didn't want to load
Figured it was my Edge connection

My finger is itchy on the trigger today ... been having a deletion party stackoverflow.com/review/…

Leaving before I make a further spectacle of myself.

Greetings. Quick question, perhaps not the most appropriate place, but perhaps the only that's open. Do mods have the power to convert an answer into a comment?

4:24 AM
@MPalletier ... no
but to be honest the need for it only rarely pops up

@waffels. Damn. they should. That Review thingie is pretty telling

LOL
oh man

gah, sorry for the misspelling

keep in mind ... quality is much improved with the new answer EULA and size restriction

4:25 AM
I pulled my old WinBook out of the closet.
Used it in college. Until I spilled Dr Pepper over the keyboard.
Laptop works, keyboard doesn't. So I have the laptop on my lap with a wireless keyboard on top of the laptop keyboard.

@MPelletier look at the first answers from today: stackoverflow.com/review/… ... very few are horrid
a week ago when I was looking at the list almost everything was rubbish

@waffles: I looked at the last answers. Incidentally, the first 2 are "thanks" and "me toos"
So, there's a new EULA? People read those? ;)

@MPelletier well ... I need to start logging how effective it is ... we are only logging when people click the "submit this crap anyway button"

@waffles: I still see a lot of thank you's as first posts. What were they like last week?

they were much worse when we were allowing 15 char answers

4:30 AM
Thank you so very much kind people!

OK! So, now, based on some voodoo text recognition, that text pops up when there's a warning of bad content?

@RebeccaChernoff you feeling any better ?

@MPelletier not that voodoo ... you can see the scores we calculate here: stackoverflow.com/review/low-quality-posts ... less than 80 means warning

Not 100%, but I'll go for 90%.

4:32 AM
the warning/eula only shows up for new users (aka less than 15 rep)
@RebeccaChernoff good to hear

This is all on the blog and I'm making you repeat, I'm afraid :S
But now I'm curious as to how the score is calculated

mainly string entropy with a few customizations that penalize ? and so on

"give me teh codez" == -30 points? ;)

probably :)

@waffles Thank you. (:

4:34 AM
ingenious!
Ever notice how many questions in the tumbleweed badge page are of the same format: long story, sample code, log
I actually did one of those (my last), not as a test, but now I'm guessing it's going to tumbleweed

@RebeccaChernoff can you please refrain from using the phrase "thank you" I am kind of burned out ... stackoverflow.com/review/… :)
I kind of dislike tumbleweed ... not sure it encourages good behavior + its totally random

@waffles BTW, what's the policy on "thank you" answers?

@waffles Dear sirs.... tank you 4 implementing teh review pagez :) ,, now can you haz gave me teh codez to ma homeworks!!!? - Yi Jiang

@waffles Hahahaha. Fine. I take back my gratitude and appreciation. q:

my policy is delete without prejudice ... we floated the idea of adding a notification in a users inbox about it ... but that would only lead to more grief

4:39 AM
Tumbleweed is random, but at the same time I kinda saw that trend, that format: long story, code, log, means it flies below the radar. Better yet, "How do I" must have a better answer rate than "What's happening here"

I am trying to convince Jeff that its a good idea to allow for the immediate recovery of a (-1) penalty when a shitty answer gets deleted
that way people could downvote them more freely

Does downvoting really have an effect though?
New users with 1 rep don't get a rep penalty.

yes ... it floats the crap to the top of the /review lists
makes it much easier to find stuff to delete
and flag for mod attention is ... more work

Well, I suppose I meant in terms of helping the post author.
But that too. (;

Hello

4:41 AM
@waffles OK, I won't flag anymore :(

@waffles Oh, so downvotes are part of the algorithm too? Can't we have that old suggestion for 'flag as non-answer' or something like that

What Yi Jiang just said

50 secs ago, by Yi Jiang
@waffles Oh, so downvotes are part of the algorithm too? Can't we have that old suggestion for 'flag as non-answer' or something like that

@Rebecca ... well the eula helps there : stackoverflow.com/questions/how-to-answer

@RebeccaChernoff Oh haha...

4:42 AM
@Yi can you link to that suggestion ?

@waffles Do you have statistics on how many people click each link?

That certainly has been suggested dozens of times on meta...

@Yi, the downvotes are just the sort order ... eg: stackoverflow.com/review/…
that allows us to find all the mess that should be deleted
@RebeccaChernoff working on it ... need to start storing it in redis

Ah, was just curious.

Q: Add option to flag "useless" answers

LapTop006It would be nice to flag "useless" answers, those that aren't really spam, but still are junk. For example see the OP's post on: http://serverfault.com/questions/75499/how-to-install-enable-ftpcopy-binary-and-mysqldump-binary-on-whm-cpanel If it's been removed the OP left an answer of just: ...

I'm quite sure there are duplicates

@YiJiang Thanks. Now plz get out of my brain

Also, @YiJiang please - @Yi doesn't work
@MPelletier Seen that too many times :P

4:48 AM
Well I just asked @JeffAtwood ... I like the suggestion
it would help us find stuff to deleted ... then we can have a "mega batch delete" screen for mods

@YiJiang I know that 2 letter @ mentions don't flag (I think I learned that from you months ago actually). But I didn't know about the tab auto-complete. I just hit enter thinking I was in Visual Studio...
@waffles Your query with "thank" and sorted by shortest first was indeed very telling. glad to see more and more tools are available to you guys to keep the place clean

yeah it works well ... re the "flag as not an answer" Jeff does not want to drown people with options on the flag menu

4 options is drowning? q:
