They're arrays of length six, so I assume six-dimensional points.
But... really? Six-dimensional points?
OP says they are six-dimensional points. Okay then.

sqrt(pow(arr1[0] - arr2[0], 2) + pow(arr1[1] - arr2[1],2) ...) up to 5
that should work right?

@Fosco Your comment for some reason didn't trigger the inbox, so no test case yet. I'll let you know when I get something.

@DanGrossman Yeah. I just couldn't believe he wanted six-dimensional points. I figured one of us wasn't communicating properly.

@LanceRoberts Ok

Shouldn't be that surprising. A lot of math happens in higher dimensions. Even relatively concrete stuff like computer vision.

9:07 PM
anyone interested in playing with HTML5 and isometric tiles?..

^ Image produced by code I wrote using 9-dimensional vectors

@Fosco This isn't that coloured-line thing again that I wasted over an hour on a week or two ago is it?

@TimStone colored line thing??

We'll go with no, then. :P

@TimStone I think it is
@Fosco got a link for us?

Q: Java Sort by Distance

SevI have a 2-dimensional array like this: {1,3,5,6,2,2} {6,2,4,7,2,1} {17,28,32,1,35,45} ... I have a function that can calculate the euclidean distance between any two arrays. Assuming that the distance function operates correctly, what's the best way to sort the 2-dimensional array so that...

Have at it.

@drachenstern Not really, I'm just starting to experiment with it myself... I made some tiles (used the wrong dimensions) and some JS to lay out a sample.. using Canvas

@Fosco that sounds like a lot of fun!
I wish I had more time :-(
I want to learn more about Canvas elements and possibly rewrite our software to use those, maybe for version 3.0
but before 3.0 I need to get 2.0 out of beta, HAHA

:)

I need for other people to stop coming up with crazy things that involve me rewriting code, heh.

@Fosco have you seen raphaeljs.com ?
Things like this amaze me :-D
or this one. SOOO COOOL

9:19 PM
@TheUnhandledException Yeah... pretty awesome stuff!

@LanceRoberts, SE userscripts are welcome in github.com/rchern/StackExchangeScripts (:

@rchern Good Idea, Fosco can post it there so it's under his name.
(If Git works that way).

/me is tempted to post the /me script

(Though if you do it might be nice to make the formatting match up and it must be Chrome compatible).
Oh whoops I got it mixed up. Thought it was @Fosco's question and @LanceRoberts' answer. Sorry @Fosco!

haha. I was joking @rchern, I have way too much to do on XMPP and way too little time already :-/

9:28 PM
She says that first part like it's a suggestion, but in reality... does the backhand slap thingadongdong

@TheUnhandledException hmm?

@rchern nevermind me, I am probably in my own world as usual, LOL
The "Tunes" room is still underused

A: Java Sort by Distance

drachensternAs I think about the problem, I believe that you need to calculate the distance from every point to every other point to know which is closest to which. So you have to effectively have a NxN grid for N points, no? Then once you have the distance from Nsubn to ever other Nsubn, you need a ranking...

/me cheers
Which one @Jin?

Somebody feel like checking me on that answer? I think I got it correct.

@TheUnhandledException That's not a complete sentence.

@drachenstern I still have no idea what that OP is truly asking for.

I need to start using that site

I was halfway through writing an answer that discussed the weighted median before I realized that probably wasn't what he was asking for.

@PopularDemand see if my answer clarifies what he's asking at all

@drachenstern I read your answer before sending that message.
You made a reasonable guess, but it's still just a guess.
I wish he'd answer my comment, but I've just stopped caring.
I hit 2k on Meta long before 2k on SO; man, editing questions on SO is a losing battle.

Yes it is just a guess, but I think I'm right ;) ...

A: How should I abbreviate "versus"?

SubniCHello Mehper, I allways use "vs." (i don't know if this is very usefull jeje) but i quote here an answer from Yahoo Answers that maybe help. Spell out the word versus unless you're reporting game scores, when you would use vs.; when you're citing legal documents, use the abbreviation ...

Should I downvote for quoting Yahoo! Answers?

@TheUnhandledException You should downvote because (just from the onebox) it's clear that that's not a well-worded, thoughtful answer.

Bah, don't have enough rep

"hehe" is bad enough, but misspelling it as "jeje"? Come on.

what?
oh
I didn't even realize that's what he meant!

10:03 PM
It's not a misspelling, that's how it's spelled properly in his native language

@Dan jeneeze?

@DanGrossman I can't tell if you're being sarcastic. I've never seen it before.

Spanish or its relatives
j has an h-sound in those languages

@Dan j is next to h...

@DanGrossman True, but is it ever typed out that way?

10:04 PM
@PopularDemand +1 @Dan -1 ;-)

@PopularDemand Yeah, I've seen it a lot before.

He's located in Spain; yes, they always use jeje in informal online conversation, not hehe

OK. I recant, you're both +/- 0

@DanGrossman Fair enough.

10:05 PM
jajaja, too :)

@Dan answer me this: What's he doing using Spanish colloquialisms on an English StackExchange Site? Downvote please ;-)

I clearly don't know enough people in Spain.

"Good news: you now have 3.0 GB of storage space in your Dropbox!"

@TheUnhandledException The topic of the site aside, SE has an English-only policy... but I think we can forgive an occasional laugh.

dropbox.com/free if you have an account and want an extra ~gig of free space
If you don't have an account, you should definitely ask me for my referral code so I can get more free space ;)

10:09 PM
HAHAHAHA

@DanGrossman I'm there.

@PopularDemand I found something else to be made note of in that question ... hmmm, what if a triplet of points is found to be equidistant from all other points by some mirage of fate, then what? Does he take the first one he comes to?
I don't know how likely that is, but if we assume that the points all lay on a sphere surface, then it could be done. Equally if he had a perfect n-gon in space

According to this webpage I'm reading, the sixth dimension in his arrays is the Christ Conciousness. Earth was originally sixth dimensional, and only became three dimensional due to human drama and the law of karma.
His code is operating on an ascended plane we must all strive to reach.

@PopularDemand I think this is the upper matrix of the set you posted:
a (1,1)
b (10,1)
c (20,1)
d (22, 2)
e (22, 3)

      a      b      c     d     e
a     0      9     19 21.02 21.09
b            0     10 12.04 12.21
c                   0  2.24  2.83
d                         0     1
e                               0
and since lower just mirrors upper on x=x I won't clutter the whole screen with each point. All that calculated using the whole sqrt( (x2-x1)2 + (y2-y1)2 ) formula

How do those free connection bonuses add up to a gig?

10:23 PM
They don't, 768MB

@Jin \o/ though it looks like StackFlair isn't picking it up, hrm |:

250MB more if you refer a new user

I know they don't. That's why I was asking. (;

There was a ~ in my original statement!
the powerful squiggly operator

If you write in a message of appreciation, some extra 128 mb earning opportunities open up, I think.

10:24 PM
75%ish is a generous ~ (;

@rchern 75% ish? Isn't the basic plan 2GB?

?

It is. I said "an extra ~GB"

It's 37.5% extra on that page alone.

@DanGrossman wow... words fail me

10:26 PM
Which isn't too bad anyway.
Considered that you can get 250 more MBs by completing the basic setup stuff.

what does "connecting" accounts do anyway?

The biggest boost is if... you accept a job working at Dropbox. They give you a few terabytes.

@rchern No idea tbh.
@DanGrossman I thought it was just unlimited :(

and i just meant the 768mb vs 1gb

@rchern on SOIS or on some other network?

10:28 PM
1. We won't publish to facebook or twitter without your explicit permission.
2. We ask for information about your facebook profile because it will make Dropbox better. It's mainly about learning about our users without annoying surveys. We won't mandate facebook connect on signup so this is likely going to be the main path in the near term for people to facebook connect. Facebook auth also makes it really easy to post to facebook when you want to; the user experience is better.

@drachenstern huh?

what does "connecting" accounts do anyway?

I tried to play a game of connect the dots between the last series of messages, but there appears to be too great a disconnect. :P

@drachenstern They'll read your tweets and your wall, while you sleep!

@TimStone a -> B -> ZZ123sAA3ass##

;)

@drachenstern I was talking about Dropbox per the current conversation. (;

At any rate...
> it isn't clear at all from this post that the page isn't done. There are important but missing steps, for example. Also, there is no link currently from the normal web experience to /free.
Probably, exactly two of those.

10:47 PM
efffing-a...if i didn't actually post a comment, cause i didn't notice i was under the min, why should i wait 15 seconds to actually post a freaking comment?

@GeorgeMarian because you're a good sport? I posted a comment earlier, or so I thought, and then it wasn't there on page reload... speaking of effing-a's

@drachenstern Hehe..."comment rejected!"

Wes
Is there nothing going on or has my browser crashed.

@wes it's just you

Wes
@drachenstern okay good I can't see your answer then. Oh wait. em......

10:58 PM
Hello

that is probably equal to ( null ?? null || null ) ;)
What's up tyler?
didja make any more progress?

on my website?

in general

well, photos.tylercarter.org shows up now

I feel like I haven't done three damned things today
@Chacha102 woohoo

10:59 PM
@drachenstern I know how that goes. Sucks

I managed to get some sleep.

I'm constantly looking for descriptions for images

Welp, I wasted an afternoon.

I currently only have a description/inspiration for the first picture

@GeorgeMarian would that be before this morning? As of 6am I had had 6 hours sleep :|

Wes
11:00 PM
@Chacha102 nice photos.

@Wes Thanks

I'm considering building a family-only database backed photo tagging system like facebook's (but with a lot more privacy natch) so the family can all backup their photos and tag them with each other and give details on the photos. I haven't decided yet if that's a worthwhile project, and haven't looked to see if anyone has done something like that already
figure it will give me a chance to play with MVC

Wes
@Chacha102 no problem. You take them yourself? @drachenstern Dunno how bigs your familly?

I figure the next biggest thing is going to be getting all my themes to be consistant
@Wes Yes.

Tyler where's the link to your flair??? chacha102.com/resume
@Wes like let's say 30 people?

11:02 PM
@drachenstern It was late this morning into early afternoon. Stomach ache kept me from getting any sleep last night.

@drachenstern Click on Resume on that page

I'm also considering how to branch it and let it follow a family tree sort of thing, so you can define who can and can't see it, etc
oy, too much clikcing
the earl says resume

@Chacha102 where's your StackFlair??? MUST BE ON EVERY PAGE! ;-)

Wes
@drachenstern they probably wouldn't tag too much. Its difficult to get people to do that. But the project sounds good.

it should be da resume

Wes
11:03 PM
@Chacha whats the Canon PowerShot SD790 IS like?

@Wes no my wife wants it now that I described it, she would be the gatekeeper, and I could easily make a "show me an untagged picture" function

@Wes I like it. It doesn't give me as much flexibility as I'd like to have, but it gets the job done.

and with my sister in law breaking her laptop recently, and another one losing hers to a fire last month, then they would figure out pretty quickly that it needed to be done. I could setup an auto-uploader tied to their account that would go through the my pictures every so often and upload new ones. I haven' thought it all out just yet, but I'm thinking about it

there are some things I can't do with it, but I figure to ignore those and do the things I can
@drachenstern I'll probably change my resume to be locally hosted

Wes
@Chacha102 what type of things? entry level DSLR's aren't much more expensive

11:08 PM
@Wes I've seen some entry levels around $800.. which ones you talking about?

@Chacha102 you could always iframe the SO one in a tab :p ... idk how that would look, and then there's issues of themes conflicting, I would just put the flair and a link around that paragraph somewhere. Maybe a separate <p> at the end of that paragraph with the flair and a link "go see that page" into a target=_blank

Wes
@Chacha the 1000d or whatever its called in the US. Assuming your in the us. Rebel something I think.

Off-topic wasn't the complaint I was expecting about the band-saw/onion question.

@mootinator Someone suggested posting it at DIY.se? I hope they were being facetious.

awww @mootinator got downvoted twice? Sorry to hear that :p

11:13 PM
I might have thrown them off with my comment that food safety wasn't a primary concern.
I suppose it is off topic if I don't intend to eat the onion.

I wonder if there's something to this link: diy.stackexchange.com/search?q=bandsaw+onion

of course my biggest project this week is going to be making my blog, photos, resume, and about page all run off the same theme

@drachenstern Exact duplicate!

so we can close then :)

Q: What is a postback?

P.Brian.MackeyThe best explanation I've found for a postBack is from Wiki. a postback is an HTTP POST to the same page that the form is on. While the article does explain how a second page was needed in ASP, but no longer needed in ASP.NET, it doesn't give much detail or background. I am looking for a freak...

I don't know whether to be curious about an 800rep user asking what a postback is, or if the first three responses were all from sub 200 rep users ... did all the high-rep users go home for the night? :p

Wes
@drachenstern I don't think there's anything too strange about this??
So do you post things in here to get attention?

Q: How do i dump all the tables from a single database in a sql file except for the ones mentioned?

robert.zHi, I wanted to know if it was possible can do a db dump of all the tables in a database, but leaving a couple of tables specified on the command line. this is for mysql. i know there is one for adding specific tables on an sql, but i dont know if you can exclude specific tables. Thanks in advan...

@wes how long have you been on SO? With 149 rep I'm going to guess not long. Normally a question like that one of the 10k+ users jumps on pretty quick

Wes
pretty sure thats a dupe
@drachenstern 1 year 5 months.

Yes, sure for 1 year 5 months, but how often are you active?

Wes
Oh I'm not. Eventually I'll have a question that isn't better served on one of the mailing lists I'm a member of, and a google search doesn't show anything. I'll come ask a question maybe stick arround on and off for a couple of days.
Then I go back to whatever it is I do. Times a problem. Too many things to do to stay involved in many things.

11:30 PM
@Fosco, it worked, thanks.

@Wes gotta keep an eye on it :-) StackOverflow can get addicting!

Wes
@TheUnhandledException yeah I know it can. However I've a toddler that doesn't sleep. I'm busy at work. I'm trying to keep up photography as a hobby. So its hard to fit everything in. SO really isn't a priority. In fact I don't really know why I'm in this chat room. I'd love to have more time for code, family, hobbies, work, sleep etc.
I guess I just felt like a technical chat, but thats not what I'm doing :P

@Wes I'm sure a toddler doesn't help :-)
@Wes I'd love to have more personal time for code and such too... I find that now, all my personal time goes to this chat, LOL
I hardly even answer questions anymore :-)

Wes
@TheUnhandledException yeah it doesn't. He's nearly 3 and he didn't go to bed 'till 11 here. and then only cause I took him for an hours walk in the pram.

hence my comment that it can be addictive ;-)

Wes
11:35 PM
its now 00:35 approx

Wow. That's rough!
Have you asked on that SE 1.0 parenting site? (Is that even still around?)

Wes
@TheUnhandledException usually its not that bad. No you see SE wouldn't even enter my head for non techinical questions.

Wes
probably. Anyway we were told he's on the autistic scale last week (they don't know where exactly) and its a common problem in those children.
:S

11:38 PM
is this a crap answer?
0
A: What is a postback?

drachensternSo far I've seen the right answer alluded to repeatedly, and almost everyone has come shy of what I consider subjectively to be the mark. Let's start with the basics: An HTTP request can be any of the HTTP verbs, but the primary two people use are GET and POST. Well, those are the two a program...

shamelessly looks for attaboys
@Wes best to find out where on the autistic scale, I'm diagnosed/treated ADHD and I have my concerns that it's not entirely genetic ...

@Wes that would make life difficult! My youngest brother had some sleep issues, I know it was touch on my parents. If he's on the autistic scale I'm sure therw will be other behavioral things to address. I wish you and your family the best!
We don't understand nearly enough about Autism, and I think there's tons of misconceptions out there.

Wes
Thanks guys. I guess the psycologists will find out where on the scale he is. I mean I suspected TBH but its different thing hearing it from a pedo.

@drachenstern I was diagnosed ADD, but not ADHD. My brother was ADHD. We're both adopted

is it just me or is pedo on this side of the pond a negative slur?

Wes
sorry I'm dyslexic

11:42 PM
uh yeah, I'm not sure where that came from, LOL!

@TheUnhandledException that's remarkably close to the environment I think breeds ADD/ADHD diagnoses

Wes
not pedo(phile)
pedo-a-trition

lol, just making sure, I figured you meant pediatrician

@TheUnhandledException really I just think there's some emotional construct that we're omitting in our families nowadays, so broken homes, orphans, emotionally disturbed homes, etc
or it could be that it was always there and nobody cared to measure it....

11:43 PM
@drachenstern Hasn't been helpful at all lately, but still expects a kickback
That came out wrong.

I agree. Plus, I think a lot of what's this "increasing number of ADHD cases" is really just bad parenting, not some strange new disease

Wes
You know I've my doubts about those increasing cases things I think ADD and ADHD wern't recognised till reciently. So as more doctors read up on them and learn about them theres going to be wider diagnosis. Hard to explain

I also think ADHD and Autism are totally different but I an not a psychiatrist

@mootinator lol, I think I know what's meant :p

Does anyone remember the name of the parenting SE 1.0 site for @Wes?

11:45 PM
@TheUnhandledException I don't think they are, but I too ANAP

@drachenstern Does the same thing, but violates that concept of only using GET for requests. (possibly) No possibly about it. GET requests should not have side effects. They should merely request (hence the name GET)data.

@drachenstern I didn't really mean what I meant :P

IANAP == I Am Not A Pedo? ;-)

@GeorgeMarian I know, and it's why I put that caveat in there twice. Some people will argue till you're blue in the face that GET is for submission

Wes
@drachenstern their meant to be idemnopotent. Damn my brain

11:46 PM
Ah, found it in an Area51 comment. @Wes see: moms4mom.com

updated

i need ideas for a resume page...

Wes
@drachenstern I'm not sure if it wouldn't be better simplified.

@GeorgeMarian you had a glitch, edit the comment?
@Wes he's said he's struggling with it :p
I felt that the ASP.NET lifecycle and the wiki article were sufficient

@drachenstern Yah, I fubared that real good.
Don't ask me how.

11:48 PM
how does one associate an SE1.0 site with the SE 2.0 profee?

Can it be done?

idk, I presume so

@drachenstern I never could on gamelegend.com
er

Wes
How do I associate my account with the moms4mom site?

@Wes what we're discussing now, I don't know if you can

11:50 PM
@Wes I think you can't because it's an SE 1.0 site

Wes
Okay

0
Q: Associate SE1.0 sites with current profile?

drachensternRead: Associate Accounts with other SO family sites? Did not answer my question. Can SE1.0 sites be associated with our current profiles? Similar to gaming.SE or P.SE?

time for homegoing. May be back, may not.

Ah, much better @drachenstern -- anyway have a nice night!

@drachenstern See yah later.

Wes
11:55 PM
@drachenstern see you later
Okay see you all later. I'm tired.
