Is it worth undeleting things that Jeff deleted by decree?

@PopularDemand Overriding Popular Demand tends to be detrimental to one's business. Just sayin'.

@mootinator Overriding someone who can override your override seems like a waste of time for all parties involved.

@PopularDemand I guess the real question there is why was it deleted in the first place?

Taunting me with your 10Kness, I see how it is.. ;)
But I did happen to read that one before anyway.
Hm

7:08 PM
> Unable to login / Reason: openid.org's SSL cert has expired as of Sept. 17 2010. I have tried to reach openid.org a few times but no use. / My SO account is unreachable.

@PopularDemand I vote to undelete those all the time, he usually doesn't delete them again.

@LanceRoberts I see.

I had already voted for that one. I hate it when they delete bug reports that haven't been fixed.

@LanceRoberts Heh, so did I. I just didn't bother asking here 'til now.

heh I'm still 250 rep or so from having vote options on SO ... meta I'm only forever away

Q: How do I ask a question without it getting closed?

orbfishTired of trying to get information, and having my question closed. 1) My question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/4240366/where-can-i-geek-out-on-sql-closed 2) The "closed" message says to go to the faq. 3) The faq says that if my question covers: software tools commonly used by program...

lol, write a popular answer :p

@drachenstern It's true. Since MSO upvotes mean "I agree with this," all you have to do is follow the popular opinion.

Or be so persuasive as to convert everyone, with the caveat that that will never happen. :P

Perhaps something like "This isn't what SO is for. Stop trying to make SO something it's not. It's like you're using a band saw to chop an onion and complaining when people tell you you're doing it wrong."
Note: I have never tried to chop an onion with a band saw. For all I know, it works great. But I'm assuming that it doesn't, until proven otherwise.

copies and pastes (;

7:16 PM
You already have enough rep! :P

@rchern Hey! No! Bad rchern! Bad! That was for drachenstern!
Note 2: if you actually use that "answer," I am not responsible for any downvotes you receive.

"Bad" and "rchern" do not go together in a sentence unless there's a "not" in there also.

@rchern That's why he separated them with a space.
I'm calling shenanigans. :P

I reject your shenanigans call.

No fair!

Q: Is it okay to chop an onion with a band saw?

mootinatorIs chopping onions with a band-saw a good idea? Or will it just result in having people tell me I'm doing it wrong?

You're welcome.

...

hahaha

any occasion to quote Forest Gump is a good occasion

@rchern I called up four other 3k users and we reopened the shenanigans call.

@mootinator Two upvotes already? I'm glad I stopped participating there.

Chalk it up people, I bet those upvotes came from here. Hehe.

7:29 PM
@PopularDemand No kidding, I expected two downvotes by now.

@PopularDemand Pfft, I'll just use my alleged mod ties and get it re-opened and locked. q:

@rchern Looks like you misspelled "mob" there.

<_<
@PopularDemand I disagree.

I haven't been reading the thread... what's going on, are we shamelessly begging for upvotes again?

@TheUnhandledException You may want to actually read the history, this time.

7:32 PM
Pffft, making me go and do work...

@TheUnhandledException You won't regret it.
Note 3: satisfaction not guaranteed.

Ok. You're right, that was worth it

Wow, finally saw that the kbd tag is back on Meta, woohoo!

+1 mootinator!
@Lance It is? W00T!!!

hello
can I get the lovely feedback from my favorite group of Meta people?

7:36 PM
@Chacha102 I dunno, tell us who they are and we'll try to track 'em down for you.

@TheUnhandledException I'm always shamelessly begging for upvotes. I'll even make it a nicely formatted fixed-font if that'll get people to upvote everything I do :p

@Chacha102 are you going to have those be ajaxian tab headers?

@drachenstern No. Just links

Q: Recent feature changes on Stack Overflow

devinbIt appears that there has been no move to create a formalized official repository of recent changes, so for now, we will be keeping track of it ourselves. RSS feed for this question.

pin the "you can also find me" at the bottom, at the top of about 40 pixels, so that the chrome "statusbar" floats under them, but so that people still see it. But push it down the page

> 2010-11-07: Support for the <kbd> tag re-enabled on Meta Stack Overflow.
You could have been enjoying <kbd> for 15 days already!

I've been too busy using it over at apple.SE

Q: Where does Command-Shift-3 or Command-Shift-4 (for taking screen captures) originate from?

JoshI know that on Mac OS X, you can take a screen capture of the entire screen with Command+Shift+3 and you can take a screen capture of just a selection (or a window) with Command+Shift+4. Is there a rationale for this keyboard combination? What is the history of that command? Where does Command+Sh...

@drachenstern Like that?

@Chacha102 yeah, and lose the body height 100% tag unless you need it for something ... the visible scrollbar looks like crap to me ;)

7:41 PM
@drachenstern but it on for a second .. thought I took it off..

besides, you now have a overflow:[hidden|auto] capable region in the middle of that screen to do something with, as you like

there

gorgeous
Clean. Simple. Effective. I like it.

Me too @Chacha102

I might put something under there. First I wanted to make the network bar
something to tie together all my loose ends on the net

resume goes to about? (;

I accidentally overwrote my main site's style.css with the another file

Missing white arial text

@rchern You mean the big name site?

That image should say, "OH HAI / I CAN HAS UPVOTEZ?"

7:46 PM
@Fosco, are you here?

I mean that when I click Resume, I see About Me and have to click Resume again.

ah

You're hindering my snooping!

that is a little confusing ... I should fix it
I call that page my resume cause it goes over what I've done
but my official resume is on Careers
and that is actually in a 'resume' format

Wes
Just doubled my meta rep in one question bit depressing really.

7:48 PM
I dunno. I need to clean up a lot of stuff on my network of websites this week
and luckily you guys are here!

Why is that depressing? heh
@Chacha102 I feel so fortunate!

Wes
@tim
Sorry I meant I've asked a lot of stuff. To double in one question. Far more than any of my more technically competent answers or questions.

@Wes remember you're talking "meta" rep :-)

I so wish I could hijack this site and not have it blind me ... warning, bleach and eyeball removal gear required after clicking this link: colebrand.com

My greatest jump in meta rep came on April Fool's Day...

7:50 PM
@Wes It was a good question.

@drachenstern That thing at the top, did someone just puke on the page in animated gif format?

@drachenstern <style type="text/css">body * { display: none; } </style> there, fixed that for you

NOT MY SITE. I just want the domain name

gah

Wes
Ahh my eyes

7:52 PM
again: NOT MY SITE for good measure

Serves yinz right for clicking on a link marked "warning, bleach and eyeball removal gear required..."

@DanGrossman bad bad!! naughty
it's a shame what they've done to my good name with that site design

1 message moved to The Trash Heap

thinking of picking up .info just for the heck of it

@mootinator since I have <1k rep on cooking, does your question have any downvotes?

7:53 PM
@LanceRoberts I am now.. what's up?

@DanGrossman Sorry, but that link really did belong in the Trash Heap..

It's just the Google home page. CENSORSHIP! FIRST AMENDMENT!
You don't happen to work for the US government, do you? :(

@TheUnhandledException No downvotes yet.

That's awesome @mootinator

Wes
7:54 PM
@DanGrossman we are not all american.

yeah, some of us are Californian...!

@Wes Your point being?

@drachenstern oh duh, I should have known.

stupid Americans...

Wes
First ammendment

7:54 PM
@mootinator I can help with that...

@Chacha102 Into the Pacific with you!

@Fosco I realized that with the move of notifications from the envelope to the Global Inbox that the tab title change script you wrote for me wasn't doing the job anymore. How would I change it to notify off of the Global Inbox instead of or in addition to the envelope? The tricky part might be changing the right title since the Inbox is global.

Wes
I don't think it can applies to other countries

@rchern Fire away!

Watch out @Fosco because @LanceRoberts wants a refund on his bounty!!!

7:55 PM
@Wes American law applies to all countries. That's why we've forced all but a few into treaties to recognize the parts of it that our corporations most value.

Wes
Gosh my english grammar is all off today

@TheUnhandledException Hahah

Map of WIPO treaty signers ;)

Wes
@DanGrossman I hope your not serious.

7:57 PM
dumb question, doesn't window.event catch the event if it's undefined in all browsers?
too lazy to switch chat rooms

I took @Dan's comment as satirical @Wes

I am most serious, @Wes.
;)

@LanceRoberts It's been a while.. could you re-email me the script? gfosco AT gmail.com

It's not 100% true, but it does have truth to it. The US tends to push our beliefs on others quite heavily...

@Fosco done, thanks.

7:59 PM
@LanceRoberts Are you expecting/desiring for it to be intelligent and highlight the right site?

@Fosco what you don't keep old code!?!

Sigh, I should have told that user to post on SO after improving his spelling and grammar.

@TheUnhandledException XMPWhat? no I am pretty bad with code management..

Wes
@PopularDemand what?

8:00 PM
@Fosco Well, I figured that'd be pushing it. I'd probably be fine updating all the tabs.

Wes
Anyone intrested in participating in the code review stack area 51 project
I'd love to see that one get off the ground.

user153754HI, Recently we have implemented OWASP security solutions with OWASP jar. After this Application is working fine in IE 7 and Firefox 3.5. @Wes I am but IDK if I can commit
I'll follow though
link please?

:facepalms:

Wes
8:04 PM
I think its a great idea that fits the stack exchanges well. Comming up with origional questions (by title alone though is difficult)

Followed. @Wes I've tried to get the same idea strted up as a chat room
hasn't worked that great so far
but I have lacked the time to be a good room owner recently

I run a website where people can buy advertising. One of the rules is that the site to be advertised cannot have popup ads on it. Customer buys ads for a site with popups, and I e-mail him telling him I can't advertise that. His response: I have Google Toolbar with the popup blocker enabled, therefore there are no popups!

@Wes Just auto name everything to "it's not workingz! help!!" ;)

@DanGrossman ROFLMAO

Wes
You just allow them inject scripts?
when they advertise

8:05 PM
@DanGrossman Isn't that more like "Your site can't be viewed in IE"?

@DanGrossman His site should detect if you have a popup blocker and refuse to let you in until you do

:lol:
Unfortunately it's all too common that people don't even know their own website yet they are spending money advertising it.
Lots of people sign up for those MLM programs that give them their own website (identical to every other member's website) and such.

Wes
You mean mambo/drupal wordpress sites?

That would be a step up

Ok @Wes I used up almost all my votes for the code review SE site
saving a few up for future sample questions

Wes
8:10 PM
@TheUnhandledException Okay thanks

:feeds squirrels chex mix:

@LanceRoberts I'm looking at that now, i just need a notification :)
so i'll leave and you can ping me

pings @Fosco ;)

Huh, do I fall out of the user list if I am logged in only via XMPP?
would appear so...

no, you're showing here

8:21 PM
@TheUnhandledException Yeah, because the XMPP bridge isn't POSTing your fkey to the server to let it know you're still around.

I just logged in via my browser so I could....

(I assume)

annoy @Fosco 10...

Wes
So do you post questions here to get them closed?
just looking at the previous questions here.

:-)
@Tim and @drachenstern I am now only logged in via XMPP

8:23 PM
the pings didn't show up ):

Please let me know if I drop off the userlist
@Tim I would assume that posting new messages would keep me up there...

if and when I notice

but maybe it's only when the script polls /events

@TheUnhandledException Hm, it should... But you were also absent for almost ten minutes either way.

Blame my boss @Tim ;-)

8:25 PM
@LanceRoberts can you make a comment on something I've done? need to trigger the notification somehow.. stackoverflow.com/users/353988/fosco

Heheh ;)

that damn guy just keeps giving me more of this "work" crap to do!

@TheUnhandledException Maybe if you stop doing it he'll get the message and leave you alone

Wow @Fosco you only have one question!
LOL @MichaelMrozek

@TheUnhandledException Yeah.. I have all the answers..

Wes
8:26 PM
What are the dotted lines for?
period of inactivity?

@Fosco ok, gave you one on Meta

They exist to confuse you

@Fosco I commented on your most downvoted MSO answer

I just had a meta answer get downvoted in about 30 seconds. I think that may be a record

8:29 PM
nope
10 seconds is the record

nope
my meta answers start downvoted

Well, a personal record

@LanceRoberts try this as a replacement for the if statement:
@LanceRoberts if ($('#portalLink a.unreadCount:visible')) {

@MichaelMrozek We added automation to the userscript so we could downvote you more efficiently.

8:30 PM
@TimStone Economical of you

Like @MichaelMrozek?

dotnetdebug.net/2006/03/21/… - so even tho the C# compiler is case sensitive, the reflector method used by System.RuntimeType.GetField is not ... thanks ASP.NET, find yet another reason for me to despise you ....

@TheUnhandledException Please. I've been downvoted for answers I haven't even written yet.

@Fosco OK, subbed it, I'll let you know how it goes.

8:31 PM
Yeah, that's normally my doing @PopularDemand

Ah, much less confused now :P
@MichaelMrozek Tough times call for improvements everywhere, of course.

@drachenstern Coincidentally I came across this today, but not with ASP.NET, just with reflection in C# in general... GetType I think it was.

@Fosco annoying isn't it? There's sometimes a good reason we want to uppercase one and lowercase another ... something about code smell, etc

@Fosco, it gave me a star on SO with no notification either way

I don't mind if the compiler will catch bad calls for me, but to have another tool do something completely uncatchable by the compiler without draconian rules ... grrrr

8:34 PM
@LanceRoberts ok.. one second, I know what is wrong.

good god coworker, read my fracking skype instead of guessing what I mean ... ffs
thanks the room for allowing me the vent

LOL
I do that here all the time @drachenstern :-)

@LanceRoberts if ($('#portalLink a.unreadCount').is(':visible')) {

DNS IS THE BIGGEST WASTE OF THE INTERNET ON THE PLANET...

hehehe, I think you're the only one with a record of that transaction :p @TheUnhandledException

8:35 PM
@drachenstern In my case it was the other developers intention... fine by me, I just thought it was the reason the process was failing at first.

Only one of many times I've vented in here :-)

@Chacha102 How so?

It's a tavern, aren't we supposed to be loud and rowdy in here? :-)

@TheUnhandledException oh I thought you meant my repeated revisions

@DanGrossman Due to the lovely caching nature of DNS, I can't see photos.tylercarter.org

8:37 PM
@Chacha102 yeah because 64.34.119.12 is so much better

Stick the new IP in your hosts file until the cache expires

@Chacha102 or run your own DNS server, that's the beauty of DNS
You can roll your own

@TheUnhandledException It'll be even more fun with IPv6

can anyone else see it?

@Fosco OK, I'll try that out. I've put another 50 bounty on the original question, so just edit it (if it needs it) and as soon as I can I'll award you the bounty.

8:38 PM
It does not resolve to anything, no

@Chacha102 Yep

@LanceRoberts Can you link me to the question? :)

but I still don't see a site

A: Can we get notification in the tab (change of title)?

FoscoPer an idea from Josh in chat, it could be done with a GreaseMonkey style script. One has been built for this purpose at: http://posiverse.com/grease/notifyMe.user.js

8:40 PM
I was going to guess Pair's internal mappings were still being updated, but @TimStone says he can see it

Ug, can't post code block via XMPP it seems @Chacha102

I see your code block, is it not displaying for you?

8:41 PM
@Tim and @drachenstern looks like I'm not in the user list anymore huh?
Quote Balpha:
> @TheUnhandledException note that you're not considered to be in the Tavern anymore (because you're not polling -- I assume you're exclusively using your bridge?)

@TheUnhandledException No, you're here.

@LanceRoberts Done and done.

no biggie
I have to work on other things anyway
like making tylercarter.org and chacha102.com look similar

@Tim I am? Time for help from my little friend...

8:43 PM
@Chacha102 I'm jealous. I can't seem to snipe either colebrand.com or drachenstern.com

I think I'll be putting together a base CSS file/template and then overriding it on each of the sites

I'm loving the new .co TLD.. just wish it wasn't $30/pop

@drachenstern Notice I had to do .org

OH HAI!
@Tim no @TheUnhandledException here

@Chacha102 yeah, I think I'm gonna have to do that or go .info

8:44 PM
but yeah ... chacha102.com was good
102content.com was a nice one too

I got: iamfos.co

@JoshsSocks Ah, yeah..

@Fosco nice

so many domains, so little time.. I never know what to put on them.

@JoshsSocks There are discrepancies between how the chat handles people who are in the room when you're first joining versus if you're already here. I guess this is one of them.

8:45 PM
@Fosco all my servers are named after Rush songs and have the lyrics on them :-D

in XMPP, 5 mins ago, by balpha
@TheUnhandledException note that you're not considered to be in the Tavern anymore (because you're not polling -- I assume you're exclusively using your bridge?)

There was no event to evict you from the list, but the server doesn't think you're here (so won't add you to the list for people who just enter).

@TimStone Ahhhhhhh
That makes perfect sense

@TheUnhandledException Now I'm hearing Rush in my head, thanks.

8:47 PM
@Fosco our primary webserver: workingman.digitalfruition.com

niice

(Granted, the same user posted the same job listing twice, but still!)

Or, our business / bug tracking / SVN server: mission.digitalfruition.com

@PopularDemand Hahah. As tempting as that route was, I opted for off-topic.
"Distant early warning", nice

@TheUnhandledException You all have too much time on your hands

8:48 PM
@TheUnhandledException Ah, you've re-entered now.

@MichaelMrozek LOL. Not exactly. That wasn't too difficult :-)
@TimStone Had to in order to delete that message as I realized it links to Nagios, LOL

@TheUnhandledException I suspect that the server should have sent notification that you disappeared though, hrm...but you'd have to consult balpha's mastery on that one, I'm just doing guess work. :P

Better yet, I'll add it to Trac as a bug with my XMPP bridge :-)

Hiya
@TheUnhandledException - any solution to the login challenge?

@Moshe I know how I want to solve it, but am too busy this week
It's not an easy solution. Plus wrie support doesn't work at all on chat.SE so something needs to be done

8:54 PM
@TheUnhandledException :)

Whenever you have it fixed just mark it for review @Tim ;-)

I'll put it in line after the SE Script fixes I have lined up. :P

But first I have to finish this huge rewrite, argh.

@Moshe re the login system, I hope to find time this week to document my new plan, hoping to find some help from someone :-)
I am booked nearly solid until February, very little time for XMPP :-(

8:58 PM
@LanceRoberts What's the verdict?

How do you calculate the Euclidean distance between two arrays?
Does that question even make sense?

depends on what's in the arrays I guess..

@PopularDemand I'm giving you a blank stare, but I'm not sure that counts for anything.

I stumbled across an SO question asking how to do that. I'm glad I'm not the only baffled one.

8:59 PM
LOL @Tim. @Popular Demand I learned that in college
but have no idea anymore :-)
