@DanGrossman - Thanks.

@YiJiang -I don't know if it was the right thing to do, but I tried to clean up that iframe thread a little bit.

FEEL THE POWER!!!!!!!!!!

@Chacha102 Chrome = progress? Blah, I'll eat my shoes...
2

@YiJiang You should marinate them in soy sauce first..
or some sort of alcoholic beverage...

3:37 AM
@Chacha102 globaltag-megablender != global inbox
Isn't Black Friday coming up? Where are all the ads? I want to buy stuff this year!

@PopularDemand Ahh .. I see my mistake..
@PopularDemand You agree that GC is the way of the future aye?

@Chacha102 I liked it for a while, but I got creeped out by how it calls home to Google without letting me know.
Back to FF for me.

@Chacha102 You want me to launch into a rant about how bad some parts of it is?

@YiJiang Only if you've finished ur shoe

@Chacha102 Only if you prove your statement to be true

3:48 AM
@YiJiang Google Chrome doesn't have the second annoying search box
Thus, Progress

@Chacha102 Having to go through Google's search pages and get served ads instead of going directly to the most likely search result - not progress

Argh, every time I buy a laptop I think "this will be easy" and then end up realizing... not so much.

@YiJiang Randomly being put at a website I didn't asked for - not progress

@Chacha102 Nah, it's correct 90% of the time, which is good enough for me
But seriously, what improvement does a single giant locationbar bring?

Erm, I use I'm feeling lucky with Chrome's omnibox
I have it as a 2nd search keyword.
So I can do plain google or a direct result

3:59 AM
Also, Chrome has a few bugs that are driving me mad right now - the text-shadow one, and the HTML5 input type one

4:16 AM
Anyone know of a good laptop buying guide?

@PopularDemand As far as?
Also, damn you Slashdot for making me interested in the Kryptos sculpture.

@TimStone Er, "general purpose"?

I guess I mean "What do you want it to tell you?" but I suppose my answer will be no in either case, so you should probably just ignore me. :P

@TimStone Worthless!

Microsoft has an idiot's guide to buying laptop, but I don't think you'd want that

4:19 AM
I'm distracted by matters of cryptography!

Still, it's worth a try I suppose if you're desperate: microsoft.com/windows/pc-scout/…

@YiJiang Thanks. I guess I'm not looking for a buying guide as much as answers to a few subjective questions.

@PopularDemand Search for detailed reviews should be better than

@YiJiang You think? I've always felt like there were far too many models out there for that to be useful.
E.g. "What do I do about Core i3 vs. Core i5 vs. Core i7 vs. whatever AMD is doing these days?"

4:47 AM
@PopularDemand Depends on how important battery life is to you, I guess. And price, heh.
shakes fist at Kryptos and finally shifts attention back to real work

Wow, is HP not selling 32-bit Windows at all anymore?

5:15 AM
Hello

@PopularDemand really?

@PopularDemand All of their machines have 64-bit processors, and I don't think that you can get XP machines from them anymore, so I imagine not.

5:33 AM
They probably don't make new models without more RAM than 32 bits can address anyway.
If you're willing to spend a bit, there are only three choices for good laptops, really. A MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, or HP Envy 14.

6:22 AM
Hey, any of you guys have a copy of IE 7 or 8 that you can test a webpage for me on?

Sure.

tell me if it looks horrible

My window was much wider than the screenshot, the wrapping was entirely caused by the design

k
actually I just found out I have a copy on my computer
what luck
time to debug IE...

6:39 AM
try it now
does it look significantly better?
err
now

nearly the same now
The "Timeline" label and "Life is like a coin" text aren't in the same position

sec, implementing the dreaded IE tags..
there try that

"Silverlight here. I'm gonna go ahead and stay full screen, like you asked me to, while you click on things on another screen. Unlike that Flash fella." Thanks, Silverlight.
perfect

eventually I'll make my blog IE compatible..
meanwhile, as long as that works I'm happy

5 hours later…
11:39 AM
@Chacha102 man, the hover colours for the sidebar are an eyesore if you don't also change the text colour.

@radp A darker color on hover, then change the font color to white

@YiJiang All colours are dark enough for a white text imho, except that yellow... which is a dark yellow anyway.

I'm also seeing two columns because the width of the li elements added together is slightly larger
@radp Funny, he actually set them to white, but because of specificity it's getting overriden

Not sure why you went red with Resume, it kinda makes me feel wary of clicking on it.
@YiJiang then I'm doubly glad I said that, bug-report instead of feature-request :)
Here, have a feature request, @Chacha102: use the quotation dash (―)

@Chacha102 Suggestion: Use blockquote for that quote there in the middle
Also, give the timeline anchors display: block and move the 60+px padding into the anchor so that the clickable area is larger
Because the entire li element has a hover style, it might suggest that the entire thing is clickable
You can also try giving them fractional widths and margins. Chrome will round them down, but other browsers should get you the correct width
:last-child { margin-right: 0} if you want the li elements to fill up 100% of the width

12:00 PM
Guys, I'm looking for examples of questions that ask two or more barely related things at one time.
Like this:

Q: Can this laptop run WoW and SC2?

DemonKiloHi, I was wondering if this computer can run World of Warcraft and StarCraft 2. If so, what estimates on fps would I get. If you're looking for a location in World of Warcraft, let's say you were in Dalaran. I'd greatly appreciate the help. EDIT: If your looking for the computer's specs, there's...

@radp And? What's your question?

(which should be split in "How can I know if my computer runs WoW?" and "How can I know if my computer runs SC2?")
@YiJiang I'm looking for questions like that to justify my proposal of a new close reason
"More than one question"
unfortunately, by their nature, you need to bump into them before you can spot them

@radp I think it's not a very good question to demonstrate the need for that

I don't see how I would search for them.
@YiJiang Why?
The answer is "here's how you can get a trial of WoW and here's how you can get a trial of SC2"
(unless we want to start wild speculations upon how the computer should perform on paper, which I don't think is a good idea.)

@radp Well I don't really think there's a need to separate it. I'm not entirely sure what Gaming's policy on specs questions are

12:04 PM
@YiJiang Based on the close votes, it's "too localized, we don't have your laptop"
One of the many "policies" I disagree with =)

@radp Seems reasonable, it is quite an exclusive situation

@YiJiang not unless you give an universal answer.

I think you guys need a generic "Does my computer run a certain game" question

Just because I ask about my laptop doesn't mean I need to answer about your laptop.
@YiJiang Yeah, and now I can't turn that one to close others as dupe
because it asks two things

@radp True, but the close votes are for the question, not the answers

12:05 PM
I mean, I could, but it's suboptimal.
@YiJiang Which is why I'd like it closed for the specific reason it's bad
asking two things at one time.
Just like on SO you see askers commenting on answers "yeah, but then how can I do this other thing then?"
and then go ahead and change the question

@radp Nah, I've always thought that the policy on asking two things at once is to ask the OP to separate it himself
@radp That doesn't happen very often, and usually the follow up questions are close enough to not justify any additional action

@YiJiang That's why I was asking for other questions, so in the next few days you notice them when you bump into them :)

@radp Is @balpha still running the community size venn diagram thingy? That question is old

@YiJiang I guess so...

Q: Can the "Flag for moderator attention" have a feedback mechanism?

Justin DearingSo lets say I flag a question for moderator attention. What happens after that is pretty opaque. I think the process can be made less opaque by the following: Having a list of what I flagged and the message I sent in the "recent" tab of my profile would let me know what I flagged. Q: Google AdSense bans?

Edward83Hello everyone!!! Please tell me what kind of sites can be banned for AdSense by Google? For example sites like digg.com or reddit.com can be not appropriate for Google's advertising program? Thank you for any advice!!!

4:54 PM
@radp lol, yep.
I don't ask them that often

@AidenBell /o▗_
(yes, that's my half assed attempt at drawing a single facepalm. Since /o_ looks like dancing, I added a "bottle" of liquor.)
(I'm just kidding anyway. I was just looking for a use of /o▗_.)

@radp - I didn't think facepalm when I saw it, i'll be honest

@AidenBell apparently /o\ is dual facepalm so...

@radp Looks like somebody holding a pipe the wrong way around, truthfully speaking

Maybe it could be construed as Fioretto.
Well, what would be your unicode single facepalms then? :P

5:03 PM
@radp Hmmm.... o٩ should do nicely

hello

It's a little small, but... it works
For future references, this question has lots of wonderful examples:

Q: How do I create Unicode smilies like ٩(•̮̮̃•̃)۶

Anirudh GoelHow to make Unicode texts like the one in the title, or like the following? ٩(-̮̮̃-̃)۶ ٩(●̮̮̃•̃)۶ ٩(͡๏̯͡๏)۶ ٩(-̮̮̃•̃). As an aside, note that in your browser the above example should look like:

See, SU has some use after all!

٩(●̮̮̃•̃)۶
that is totally the new tavern name

@Chacha102 Hahaha!! +1

suprisingly it works

Let's see how the chat ad on Meta looks now
Hmmm... looks like the room titles are cached. How long before it changes?

It's changed now.

it works perfectly

On Linux the position of the eyebrows are off
But it's still pretty good

Obviously someone just had to put this one up:

Congradulations @radp. You have posted 6,700 messages in the Tavern, which is higher (and sadder) than anyone else!

5:12 PM
@radp The best ones are the ones which are bad in subtle ways

That is 7.9% of the 84k messages total

The Swastika ones were really bad (erm... I mean good. Whatever)

throws confetti

goes off to make flashing banner to celebrate

@YiJiang agreed.

5:12 PM
err wait..
I think I'm mistaken

@YiJiang who cares about 6,700 exactly?

dang it...
Why is Frequently in this room not sorted by messages?
@TheUnhandledException has the most with 9.3k

Hold it off till 10k then.

throws even more confetti

The tab isn't sorted by number of messages

5:14 PM
@rchern dangit! /me needs to trim the message before wrapping italics around it
My habit of adding a space behind every word is too strong

@Chacha102 it's sorted by activity

I love how many logos get the name actually wrong.

You should be less generous with your spacing :P

Hmm. On A51, do you only get a referrer link once you've committed? What if I want to refer someone to something I have no interest in and don't want to commit to? Am I just goig blind?

Hm, I don't see anything either.

@rchern You need to commit to refer.
I know, it sucks.

It was definitely asked on MSO though.

Q: Can I refer someone without committing?

Mark PimOne of the proposals (specifically the Food and Cooking proposal) is a perfect site for a friend of mine, but not so much for me. Can I send her a referal request without having committed myself? If not is this a deliberate choice or just a not-implemented feature?

No answer here as to why it is so though.

yeah, just found that q

6:55 PM
@radp That's weird. I guess they assume anyone who's qualified to refer would be interested enough to commit?

@PopularDemand Dunno, maybe they want people to use Area51 to spam ruthlessly.
Say, I could create a 1 rep account on any site, then start mailbombing "on behalf of" Area51
...or some such apocalyptic scenario.
No idea, really.
