Anyone seen any info about whether the new home page has increased the number of answered questions?

@Benjol Hmmm... too early to tell?
The powers that be holds the data. The rest of us will have to hold till the end of month data dump before doing our own statistical analysis

I'm certainly seeing more questions I know how to answer - even if most of the time someone else still gets there first ;)

7:47 AM
Was the Ctrl+s hotkey to save drafts dropped? Or is it just not working for me locally

@MichaelMrozek It's dropped, yes
Jeff said that supporting that shortcut was using too much code, which is slightly odd, but okay

@TheUnhandledException - a little something for you on the way...

: Gardening and Landscaping

Proposed Q&A site for gardeners and landscapers of every kind. From those just looking to care for their lawn, to those who want to grow fruits and vegetables. This site is for any kind of gardener and/or landscaper. (Vote in comments about scope change.)

I'll take a look at why the Q&A is a bit wonky...

@rchern fix: gain less rep!!
I'll look at the timer logic.
@MarcGravell woo Area51 oneboxing :D thank you.

@MarcGravell Nice - but what's with the unescaped HTML entities?
Also, when is the A51 api coming out?

10:05 AM
I already noted that...
build server is doing it's thing - give it a few minutes...
AFAIK there are no current plans to add an Area 51 API. Not even for chat.

happier?

@MarcGravell It doesn't tell us what stage the proposal is in, and what that number beside the title mean
Wait, it does. But it's still less intuitive than, say questions or answers

@MarcGravell Yes, if it was easier to know if it's in definition/commit/beta/launched status. Maybe replace the follower/committed/day counter with the overall progress pct?

balpha is prettificationiong it as we speak

Jin
11:08 AM
anyone up?

@Jin aye

Jin
❴❵ can you see those as unicodes? supposed to be a pair of curly brackets
i can see them, but PC people can't... i wonder if it's because i have certain fonts installed on my Mac

I'm on Linux and I can.

Jin
Windows users can't for some reason... i wonder if I have to specific certain fonts in the CSS

TURN OFF THAT DAMN MICROWAVE
@Jin My WinXP is pretty much vanilla and I got squares :(

Jin
11:19 AM
can you see them ok on that url i linked?
i was able to see them OK on my PC laptop, I noticed that site has font-family: "Arial Unicode MS","DejaVu Sans",sans-serif; for those unicodes

@Jin I can see them on Ubuntu Linux Firefox

Jin
@YiJiang you mean on that site i linked, or the ones I pasted in chat here?

@Jin Both

It'd be faster if my connection didn't drop every thirtieth second.
@Jin everything below "Common punctuation" gives boxes on Chrome WinXP

Jin
@radp bummer.

11:25 AM
Trying IE8. Same.
@Jin I know, Webfonts ftw?

Jin
yeah i won't go that route then. once again, font > me

That's odd, because I'm pretty sure Chinese brackets would work

Math.SE does load correctly.
@YiJiang Probably they do when you install the optional Chinese i18n support.

《》<- The brackets used for book and poem names

Jin
it has to be curly brackets
due to a bug in our css minifier, i can't use }

11:27 AM
Indeed Math.SE does load correctly on WinXP vanilla + IE8/Chrome7

@radp Can you see those brackets I just posted?

@YiJiang Nope. Not on vanilla WinXP.

@radp That's odd. I'd swore I could type those on Windows and see them without any problem

Jin
i can see them fine

Oh, right. XP doesn't come with East Asian Character support by default. Is that the reason?

11:30 AM
@YiJiang I'd say yes.
@Jin I know you can, I know I can't.

Throughout Wikipedia, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese and Korean characters are used in relevant articles. Computers with older operating systems with the default language set to English or other Western or Cyrillic language settings will require some setup to be able to display the characters. Newer computer operating systems do not require any additional steps to view languages other than English. Check for existing support If you see boxes, question marks, or meaningless letters mixing into the first part, you do not have support for East Asian characters. Chinese #; This is Traditional...
Check?

Only use I've had for this WinXP partition is installing Steam to use its IM :D

@radp Helicopter pad! Hello world! Help needed! Helvetica!

Jin
i think typeface wise, the TeX site is my fav so far

Jin
@YiJiang some may call it hell..

@YiJiang Helvetia. (= Switzerland.)
(just continuing the list of completions.)

Jin
i'm using Palatino+Lucida for the TeX site, I think it's a pretty good combo

11:37 AM
@Jin So you're actually inserting those tag brackets with :before and :after

Jin
yeah. the problem is, minifier bugs out for after{content: "}";}
it thinks "}" is the end of that statement

maybe HTML escaping?

Jin
doesn't work in CSS

@Jin Escaping?

Jin
i tried

11:40 AM
@Jin, if it's any help, on FFX, XP (in French :):

did you try hitting it really hard and swearing? maybe a few choice threats?

That's odd... how are you going to do the inset letterpress effect for the individual question titles?
I don't think text-shadow accepts inset

Jin
multiple text shadow
but i decided not to use it, because it skewed the shape of the font
text-shadow: 1px 1px 0 #fff, -1px -1px 0 #000;

@Jin Oh yeah, and one last thing - how did the divider between the toolbar buttons for wmd disappear for all of the new SE sites?

Jin
11:50 AM
because i removed them

@Jin Erm... leaving the rather ugly gap? What was wrong with the dividers anyway?

Jin
i just feel if there's white space to separate groups, then there's no need for |
i also removed | from the topbar too. but you can see them on the trilogy sites still
going ZzzZ. thanks for testing the unicode for me.. gn

@Jin You're going to bed at 7 in the morning? :P

A: Can I use C# Serialization to read a binary file in custom format?

Marc GravellYou can't do that with BinaryFormatter - it will expect additional meta-data/padding around object. You would have to read manually either from a Stream or similarly via a binary reader. @Jin, was going through my meta questions last night and saw this one. Did it get shoved under a rug?

Nothing like a dental cleaning at 8 in the morning to really wake you up.

The fact that I'm up this early anyway is nothing short of amazing. Hopefully today will be productive. :P

@YiJiang +1 for troll-face, -1 for typos in graphic :/

liter, heh.

"liter than" "going threw" ← just because your spell checker doesn't complain doesn't mean your spelling is right

@radp Yeah, it's a really amateur attempt at disproving several centuries of physics

@YiJiang "-1 not enough muons"?

2:40 PM
Have a look at this ^ It's basically a giant game of space invader

with Gaming hearts.

3:04 PM
Bah, I just found out my router has a telnet interface.
Except it doesn't seem to be useful at all.

@YiJiang I am optimistic that some day we will find a source of relatively free energy. I don't expect to violate any laws of physics, however.

@MarcGravell Awesome glad to see those oneboxes working now!

@radp This does not seem like a good fix.

I agree. You should continue to gain rep, but then just filter it all over to me.

@rchern Good enough for me :P

Q: How to learn Erlang framework?

DonaldIsFreakHi,buddy~~~ I had two question about Erlang. Is design pattern of concept to be suitable for use in Erlang? Want to understand the architecture quickly. Could you recommend any great framework and how to learn? what view-point to explain this erlang framework. Thanks for you.

> I'm not your buddy, friend. – Fosco

I'm not your friend, guy.

:)
damn I thought we could close to migrate to Programmers.SE... guess not.

I thought it was "I'm not your friend, pal!"

@TimStone This also does not seem like a good fix.

It's possible, my memory is notoriously sketchy.

3:15 PM
they went through like 4 different things

@TheUnhandledException "Sirius Cybernetics Robots are plastic pals that are fun to be with!"

@rchern I looked at the available options and it seemed to be the best there was to work with. I know, I know, I'm not happy with the solution either, but sometimes it is what it is. ;)

11 hours ago, by Yi Jiang
@TheUnhandledException Ahem... three letters, how can you forget? (Or are you been deliberately obtuse?)

You'll sacrifice yourself and do the hard job because someone has to do it though, right?

3:17 PM
@YiJiang I wasn't being obtuse, was trying to use your first name only. But I thought two letters worksed in chat if we'd spoken recently?

@TheUnhandledException Three letters for @-mention, don't make me go bash you over the head with a giant "YI"

@YiJiang Use the ideograph. Remember, short names for the win.

@TheUnhandledException I was going to link to the Family Guy reference for this, but the YouTube clip I found was crappy. :P

@TheUnhandledException It doesn't. Also, "Yi Jiang" is my given name

woohoo + got +10 rep on meta, I'm so a king around here ;)

3:18 PM
Yi shall now be referred to as 150097.

Borrow a lowercase L from me if you need it.

Then @YiJiang it is from now on :-)

@rchern I feel it's the right thing to do

@TimStone How noble of you.

@rchern You're right, I agree that's better! Don't you @150097?

3:19 PM
I try, I try.

@TheUnhandledException @rchern Oy.

hmmm, does /highlight search the message too?
You could use highlighting so you don't miss messages directed @150097.

@rchern What do you mean?
No, that won't work

Hahah
But it should :P

3:20 PM
Well it should.

I actually toyed with the idea for a while, highlighting @-mentions from people other than yourself

Ok thanks for the morning amusement. Time to dive back in to work for me.
@TheUnhandledException me if you need me, it makes Jabber light up
that's my highlight :-)

@TheUnhandledException like this?
@TheUnhandledException so we should fire jabber randomly for you?

@drachenstern Exactly :-)

10-4 @131541.

3:21 PM
@drachenstern If you want to be ignored... :-)

lol, I figured you got the gag on the first one, thought I should clarify on the second ;)

@TheUnhandledException (jab) (poke) (stab) Oy!

@rchern There are two exclamation points. It's my version of the interrobang :)

hehe

3:26 PM
yay for walking in this morning to a dead monitor on my desk ... how am I supposed to get any work done with only one monitor? I've already been bemoaning the restriction to merely two monitors

@drachenstern Take a roll of duct tape, run it through the middle of that monitor and pretend you've got two in there. Mission accomplished!

time to go filch another monitor from an unmanned cube (I tried pulling my third from there, but that was strictly vetoed in a timely fashion [boss walked up mid pull])
@YiJiang I've a 4:3 and a 16:9
already awkward (but nice for testing layouts)
oh, /facepalm, misunderstood

@drachenstern Every time I add a monitor, I feel like I could use another one, heh. Going in the opposite direction is definitely worse though, I have a hard time getting things done if I have to work on just my laptop.

thought you meant to join them

i used to have a landscape and a portrait monitor setup next to each other.. that was cool for a while.

3:30 PM
@Fosco That's my current setup!

I didn't know the interrobang was a thing. I've learned something new. And am now going to use the interrobang. That cool‽

Wow, maybe I am crazy.
@rchern How did you not know about the interrobang until just now?

(Also, y'all can see it right? You're not getting empty boxes?)
@PopularDemand Apparently pretty easily?

@rchern Well, duh. (Snark will continue until use of interrobang character is discontinued.)

@rchern Yes. No. Yes. No.... yeee... nes....!

3:32 PM
..

@PopularDemand, you don't like the interrobang‽

@rchern Nes!

@drachenstern Well look at you, fancypants rich " merely two monitors" guy.

@rchern I prefer the alternate term "quesclamation mark"

@TimStone I find this acceptable.

3:34 PM
Hooray!

@PopularDemand I wouldn't work with less than two .. (excepting laptops) ... haven't for the past four years now
Also, upgrade! the other desk had a 19" 4x3
Trying to get them to swing me a 22" or larger 16:9 tho might be tricky before Jan1
@YiJiang wouldn't yo and nes have been better? just sayin...

@rchern I love the interrobang. Which is why I can't stand your abuse of it.

Abuse?

@PopularDemand as a matter of record, I actually bought the two for my desk at my last job, because they wanted me to use a space heater ... I mean CRT ... and I was like "um, no." When I went to leave they decided the desk needed two monitors so bought them off me for original price.
pretty sure I still got shafted there somehow

@drachenstern Programming on a space heater would be interesting.

3:38 PM
Might have been more productive too

@PopularDemand +1 for edit comment :P

I won't continue to quote the thread, but it's hilarious
ok, moderately funny

Jin
@rchern that's an IE7 issue, we don't support IE7 for pixel perfect anymore. IE7 = IE6

@TimStone Which?

@Jin Ah, right. Just wasn't sure since it was back from July. I was going through my meta questions last night accepting ones that I could and noticed that one didn't have any responses.

3:52 PM
uh, changing from 17" 1280x1024 to 19" 1280x1024 is a bit of an eyestrain

@TimStone Ah.

@Fosco was that necessary? ;)

probably (;

3:53 PM
@rchern I thought I was told the game was to have no accepted answers?

@drachenstern Do you have eye trouble?... at 19" I would have 1600x1200 or close to it...

@Fosco crap dell monitor
native

@drachenstern Yuck.. ok.

I'm gonna make you cry in two pieces with one image upload ...

at least 3 things wrong with that photo... OS, Monitors, Video card

3:57 PM
@Fosco and yet it's where I pay my bills, so meh

@drachenstern no worries.. im sure you have more important hobbies that get your disposable income.

indeed.
and the companion snapshot

mine would show windows 7 ultimate x64, a 40" and a 24" double monitor setup, and a GTX460 video card... alienware sickness.

and yet you're not ;) ... yeah, I'm sure the thread doesn't care about our hardware ... but do it anyways

@drachenstern That's... wow... That's like my 7 year old computer... except with more RAM

4:00 PM
@YiJiang yeah...

@Fosco If mine ain't that I can always Photoshop the numbers in

Hahah

hehe

4:02 PM
oh that's not specs on the screen :p

@Fosco (cough cough) Show off (cough) :P

@YiJiang :) I have to get my moneys worth somehow!
notice the fins on top..... active cooling!

Hm, I need to do some upgrades to my machine, but I'm always hesitant to spend the money, heh. :P

I applied on dell for financing and they gave me a 3k limit.. i used it all.. paying it off within a year for no interest.
$150 auto deduct every 2 weeks
hurts a lot like a car payment...

4:08 PM
Mine doesn't look as cool on the inside :P
Also cut my hand up getting that damn heat sink seated, heh.

@TimStone that's a nice rig tho
heh

I could use an upgrade in the hard disk department though. And now that I have three monitors I want to upgrade the graphics cards as well, since I can't run Cross Fire.
(since one card can't run all three monitors...No EyeFinity :()
@drachenstern Thanks, by the way :)

4:24 PM
You people and your hardware.

I like shiny things.
shrugs

Oooh...geek porn.

'Ello @GeorgeMarian, how've you been?

Hola, Tim.
Still unemployed, but doing well otherwise. :)

Ah, that's unfortunate, but good to hear everything else is well. :)

4:29 PM
Well, I could use the vacation and I'm still getting unemployment, so it's all good.

Hi everyone, sorry for the interruption. I have a quick question:
How can I use zero-width spaces in the comments?
Using the form someone told me (also available in WP) doesn't work (and this is in FF).
Sock puppets everywhere will thank you.

Er?

shrugs

@drachenstern That doesn't sound like much of a fun game.

4:32 PM
Oh, you mean you're trying to cheat the minimum character requirement?

@rchern yeah, I'm pretty sure it's been mentioned in irony every time ;)

Sadly.

I'm guessing you have to use a UTF character

@TimStone I'm trying to achieve the minimum text necessary to get a point across.
I wouldn't say "cheat" is accurate, because it is simply a non-displayed character, but you still have to do work to get it in.

@MarkC apply judicious use of a clue-by-four

4:35 PM
Hello

@MarcC
The zero-width space (ZWSP) is a non-printing character used in computerized typesetting to indicate word boundaries to text processing systems when using scripts that do not use explicit spacing, or after characters (such as the slash) that are not followed by a visible space but after which there may nevertheless be a line break. Normally it isn't a visible separation, but it may expand in passages that are fully justified. In HTML pages this space can be used as a potential line-break in long words as a replacement for the non-standard tag. However, it is not supported in all web browse...

Har har, drachen, du bist nicht am höflichsten heute Morgen.

@MarkC I wasn't really questioning your motivation, I just didn't wasn't sure what you were trying to do.

@MarkC ehwhat? I don't follow. You have to use a UTF character to do a non-printing space

How is it not cheating? LOL

4:37 PM
:D Because it isn't disabled! And because the point of character count is to make you work (minimally) to put in a comment
I have to type FIVE characters just to get one ZWSP

@MarkC keep it polite yourself, the languages of the intertubes is the lingua franca, and in this case that means English

or is it six, lemme try again

@MarkC the point is to make you share something of value

Dude. Just frigging type 15 normal characters and you could've been done 10 minutes ago.
5

Seven
I already explained my motivation.

4:38 PM
I reject your motivation!

@rchern he's trying to setup sockpuppets to spam the system, he already told you ;)

> @TimStone I'm trying to achieve the minimum text necessary to get a point across.

8 mins ago, by Mark C
Sock puppets everywhere will thank you.

@MarkC, the minimum text needed is 15 characters.

It seems no one here has figured it out.

4:39 PM
What are you wanting to comment anyway?

It's a special face that gets a very specific message across.
Your favorite kind!

@MarkC we have no motivation to display nonprinting characters in webforms, thanks
so we're not going to be motivated enough to figure it out
unless pissing us off means you leave faster

The comment length is one of those comical SO "features" that does no good whatsoever. Getting people to type " (15 characters)" after their comment doesn't seem to have dissuaded them from typing short comments

Strange, I'm pretty sure Michael already gave me this

@MarkC, point being, shorter comments can come across as rude. Don't do it.

4:41 PM
Drachen, misery loves company, does it not?

It can be done, of course. Doesn't mean you should.

Stop being such a jerk.

oO

As always, the answer is to use more Markdown.

@MarkC not in this case. And who's being a jerk? We've answered your question, you belabor the question

4:41 PM
@MarkC is this at me?

ANyway,l if you guys can't answer the question with a solution
Please stay out of this. You've added nothing, you didn't even seem to have read my first post.

@MichaelMrozek what that's not part of the game?

No, that was at the guy with the German username

11 mins ago, by Mark C
How can I use zero-width spaces in the comments?

@MarkC, I did. I've asked what you want the comment to be. You don't need 15 characters here, so what's the comment you're trying topost.

4:42 PM
Michael, I'll see you in the sandbox

I seem to be the only one who has answered you, so what's your point?

Please stop spamming, drachen. You're behaving very childishly.
I already noted specifically that the HTML code doesn't work.

who said HTML code?

In my first post, I said "the usage given in WP doesn't work**

so you meant Wikipedia and not WordPress

4:43 PM
And neither did the UTF, or at least i'll try pasting it in from charmap

sighs

see, I gave full expressions when I gave my answers, so that there was no misunderstanding

You simply assumed, I thought it would be clear from the context that is was wikipedia i'm talking about. Wordpress has nothing to do with SE.

@rchern if we don't bait the disrespectful trolls who claim we're trolling, whatever shall we do with the day? I'm just waiting on my scripts to start up

So please stop being so contentious.

4:44 PM
@MarkC I assumed if you wanted us to understand you would give us detail, as all of SO expects
if you want answers, give details
if you want snark, ask how to bypass the filters

@Chacha102, I think it's time for the muffincat.

@drachenstern Not funny.

@rchern maybe so

@MarkC Let's all stop being so contentious.

here I'm /afk

4:46 PM
How is it so hard to give a simple answer, no offense intended?
Some weeks ago I asked the same question but only got the apparently non-working HTML version.

Oh....the drama...

Really.
Nobody's trolling, you've just got a poor attitude.
@Drach

Personally, I disagree.

@drachenstern Oh come on... is so uninteresting. You can just use [ ](http://www.google.com), like this:

4:49 PM
Thank Yi, I didn't know about that 'feature'.

somebody check source on that comment?
check the character counts
I can't seem to use it to actually demonstrate that it's nonbreaking whitespace

sighs

Q: Why the 15 character minimum on comments?

cjavaproIt gets annoying if the answer to another comment is short. Edit: My answerable question: Is there a documentation about why?

@Rchern Re your comment earlier about 10 minutes, I already explained that any additional characters . It's unpleasant to come in here asking a simple question that other people have had no problem answering in comment threads or in chat, only to receive pedantic reprimands.

I'm using U+FEFF

(As usual, Meta had the answer)

4:54 PM
Can anybody else put a blank line to the chat room?
I'm trying in the sandbox

@MarkC, fair enough. Your initial requests to me came across as "I want to be terse and rude, help me." Which... ):

Well, I'm not going to get into an argument here, but I think much of the problem earlier was people reading beyond what was actually written.
