7:00 PM
Is there any of the XMPP gear driving this anyway, even if it isn't the whole shebang?

@mmyers ^

@AidenBell ping @balpha
@BoltClock You only made one? Stingy!

@PopularDemand - It can be removed from the cat.

@BoltClock What is it? I've got a little red X in a white box, but that can't be it.

@BoltClock yeah well, back in my day, there were no cats in irc... and we liked it :)

7:03 PM
@mmyers A lolcat.

hiding images at work? priceless... javascript:$('img').each(function (){$(this).hide()});

Heh, some of us don't have to hide the images.

Wuts goin on

7:06 PM
Chat looks so empty without images

@AidenBell: Wai u askeen uz hoominz, u nidz to ask of teh wisdum of teh Ceiling Cat!

@BoltClock - My eyes! The jauntiness

That looks to me like someone took a photo of a cat poking its head through a hole in drywall and rotated it 90 degrees.

@PopularDemand No, it's a cat poking its head through a hole in the ceiling. THAT IT MADE.

qwerty ftw

7:10 PM
@PopularDemand - You know ... you are right

What? Lolcat pictures are manipulated? Say it ain't so!

qwerty ftl

Out of curiosity, does giffage work? Not wanting to spawn chan-esque arsery

@AidenBell I understood all the words in that except the three most critical ones.

dvorak > qwerty (;

7:13 PM
@mmyers - Does the chat system support the rendering of animated gifs via upload, without wanting to devolve interactions into those reminiscent of chan-chats. That would be arse of the lowest order ;)

@AidenBell I think Imgur sticks to PNGs. You can post animated GIFs in here, but it kills people's browsers so I would be very likely to delete them.

actually, at 1.5mb I don't think I will even try
@mmyers - Yes

a test!

Q: Why is it that my account is locked in 5 minutes but not deleted several hours after I requested?

Ian QuigleyApologies to people I've annoyed tonight. My SO account has been locked after I spent 10 minutes or so vandalizing my questions. I did this because I emailed support asking to have my account deleted. Why does it take so long to delete an account yet it can be sin-binned in 5 minutes? 98% of yo...

@shog9 - Mine was a dude coming within 1mm of death, but yours is better

7:18 PM

@PopularDemand - sigh some people!

I fully expect that tomorrow he will have gotten over whatever is plaguing him today.

@mmyers - What rep was he on before he went postal?
SO rep

Dunno. Somewhere north of 5k, I think.

5K-something, according to the rep graph

7:22 PM
@Shog9 Woo Children's!

Woo.

@shog9 @mmyers - Maybe someone went "We are sorry to inform you, the position has been filled by someone who could answer question #29389 better than you." and he raged lol

Why does NB's old SO account show 1.7k rep?

Seems to have been brought on by
-4
A: Can printf() produce "-.5" for the value (-0.5)?

Ian QuigleySee the printf spec, and the precision section. You can do printf("%+0.4f", -0.5);

@PopularDemand I don't think they ever figured out how to completely delete him

7:24 PM
but really, looks like he just had a bad day and took it out on SO
I don't know what Neil's status is.

he's a ghost in the machine now, alive with no soul

Ah well - sin-bin is probably a good cool-off

@Shog9 I suppose that's fair.

@mmyers Neil? The one who turned anon?

The same.

Q: Why use a for loop instead of a while loop?

ZiggyWhen should one use a for loop instead of a while loop. I think the following loops are identical, except for their syntax. If so, then why choose one over the other? int i; for (i = 0; i < arr.length; i++) { // do work } int i = 0; while (i < arr.length) { // do work i++; } Thanks!

that must be a duplicate...

Tim
40 upvotes and 29 answers? That makes me sad.

eh... It's just the sort of newbie question that SO was created to answer
(because no one reads The C Programming Language anymore)

wait, that was asked yesterday?

That is correct.

I thought SO had grown out of that pile-on answering the trivial questions

7:37 PM
@shog9 - shuffles mine into a draw of course not

and, that's probably a dupe. :)

@GregHewgill laughs hysterically

"There is one reason to choose for over while: Readability" not sure about that

@GregHewgill that's what I've been looking for. So far, nothing language-agnostic
(not that for and while loops are language-agnostic to start with...)

well I just added one
it happens to be java, but shrug

7:40 PM

Q: Loops in C - for() or while() - which is BEST?

aksfor() or while() - which is BEST? for (i=1; i<a; i++) /* do something */ OR i=1; while (i<a) { /* do something */ i++; }

well, while you're at it...

AAAAH I hate the meta SE logo so much right now

@MichaelMrozek - The collider is like some kind of psychotic clippy

@MichaelMrozek That just happened to me 10 mins ago!

@MichaelMrozek Slow day at work?

@BoltClock It happens continuously, that's the whole point. The flag is unclearable
@PopularDemand Something is messed up and builds take like 10 minutes

7:43 PM
@MichaelMrozek surely you could just clear it from SO...

No, it only shows up on meta

What Michael said.

@MichaelMrozek Lucky. My builds always take 7-12 minutes. But now the repo's gone wonky again.

It's presumably because of this:
4
A: Account association doesn't work, and Inbox link is missing?

Kevin MontroseThis is (temporarily!) by-design. We've basically split the data center in two, with Meta serving as our canary for the eventual migration of all remaining sites. Accordingly, alot of the "cross site" features have been turned off (like Inbox) or don't really work (like associations).

glad I'm not active on MSO then!

7:44 PM
You're very active, but downvoting posts doesn't trigger the inbox

My task isn't even terribly difficult, but it's trip-up after trip-up lately.

@Fosco Just got back from a meeting. Know any Ruby?
(Re: Bounty for XMPP)
Oh, you're not even here, LOL

@TheUnhandledException To be fair, that is pretty rare.

@PopularDemand What is pretty rare?

@TheUnhandledException Who are you talking to?

7:47 PM
What's funny is that you still get the notification red spot, but no inbox.

@MichaelMrozek so wait, they're still migrating it?

@TheUnhandledException Fosco not being here.

@PopularDemand Oh HAHA

@Shog9 No, it's migrated, it just has some bits turned off.

7:48 PM
@Shog9 Somebody said they'd finished migrating Meta and were using it as a guinea pig before migrating all the others.

oh... So meta is all alone...

@Shog9 What else is new?

In New York...

farewell, innocent bucolic Meta that we knew

@MichaelMrozek awww, somebody changed my title
huzzah! StackFlair.com now has diamonds for mods again

7:50 PM
@rchern fixed

+1

oy

Rrgh, why can we flag for spam and offensive but not noise?

@PopularDemand because you don't find noise offensive

That policy has been not so much skirted as completely ignored

Hm, no onebox. Must have already been deleted.

@PopularDemand Has been. Can't see it :P

@PopularDemand So neither you or Jeff can in good conscience flag a post for noise. You have no one to blame but yourselves...

deleted by Community♦ 9 mins ago
Yeah.

8:00 PM
> "If we see a pattern of this sort of behavior from users, we will consider it abuse."
I'm not trying to get binned, here.
Although I take it from your collective reactions that this has either changed or is not being enforced.

Oooo, yay:
> NB: This has been rolled out across all network sites, but right now the privilege pages are only editable wikis on meta.stackoverflow because we’re still nailing down the default content for each privilege, and would like to deploy the privilege wikis globally across the network again over the next week or so.
I thought I missed the last call to edit those
@PopularDemand I don't abuse offensive flags; I do abuse spam flags in that I flag posts like "jaweuifhaiuefnakwjelnfuioaw" as spam, which is apparently not an intended use
I don't know of anyone that's ever gotten in trouble for it, but I make no promises

@MichaelMrozek It's all you! Five hundred Internet dollars with your name on them!

I posted this a little while ago, but nothing came of it; as Shog9 put it, the general opinion seems to be "meh":
3
Q: Educating people who misuse flags regularly

Michael MrozekThese posts all have spam flags on SO right now (some more than one): http://stackoverflow.com/questions/109325/postgresql-describe-table/109331#109331 http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3526311/baby-names-for-programmers-closed http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3526311/baby-names-for-programm...

I hate it when people flag for spam or offensive when it's neither. Those words aren't that hard to understand.

Agreed, Lance. Few things on SO anger me more than that.
Anyone who watches the #stackoverflow Twitter hashtag should know what I mean :)

8:08 PM
@MichaelMrozek Not sure what to do about it, but have an upvote.

my usual luck, I make an app looking at a single number off the API, the traffic stats

@BoltClock Can the non-Twitterers get an executive summary?

@PopularDemand: [EXPLETIVE] [EXPLETIVE] SPAM FLAG [EXPLETIVE] NOT SPAM [EXPLETIVE] [link to question] (with some common words here and there)

@BoltClock Gotcha. I'm sorry I asked.

@PopularDemand No big :)

@mmyers Is that from a real game?

@mmyers Shame 10k users won't ever see those notifications.

@LanceRoberts I hate it when people flag things as offensive that don't offend me. But they persist in doing it anyway...

8:15 PM
@BoltClock Well, join one or two of the new SE sites then.

@mmyers speaking of which...

Q: Reputation requirements have not been changed

badpAs much as I may enjoy the fact I can still inline retag posts and access the 10k tools, I must report the rep requirements haven't changed yet from the public beta. Are we sticking with close at 500, edit at 1000 and tools at 2000 for the foreseeable future or is it simply an overlook from the ...

@Shog9 Yeh, I hate it when people don't find things offensive, when they obviously are...

StackFlair PSA: i'll edit the StackApps post in a bit, but y'all can switch to using stackflair.com instead of stackflair.somee.com. Ready to work on feature requests (and any bugs of course) github.com/rchern/StackFlair

@LanceRoberts Obviously, the only solution is to use the offensive flag for posts that I don't find offensive, on the assumption that someone, somewhere, will be offended. And refrain from using it on those posts that offend me, because if The Powers That Be Don't Agree, I'll be boxed.

It works.

8:19 PM
that's the idea (;

@rchern the favicons still look broken :)

That Glitter theme sure is shiny

@radp, create an issue so I don't forget?
@Oded, yeah...it was implemented as a joke, will probably just remove

what? you created the issue!
:P

):

8:23 PM
Is that freehand font, @radp?

what are these shenanigans!
what'd he remove >_>

@rchern I'm uploading the images to imgur so I can have a snapshot for the issue

o ok

Whew, making progress for a change.

8:26 PM
would be better if you used the same theme for both (;

I was also going to complain about Gaming not having its favicon yet, then I noticed the official flair also isn't up to date :)
@rchern I can't choose the theme for the official flair :/

Who designs the graphics for the SO sites?

my default is similar to their default

which is why there is value only in non-default settings!

@radp What? My home computer had it saved as of last night.

8:28 PM
@PopularDemand I'm talking about the flair.
notice, no pixelated heart

Actually I don't see it next to the URL right now.

@radp well when you're doing things with colors and images over backgrounds and comparing them, shouldn't they be similar? (:

okay
status-completed

refresh your flair
notice anything different?

@rchern aye aye
much better

8:39 PM
^__^

finally I can use it!
now I just need to give away 800 meta rep so I get my Gaming username and info instead.

i thought about letting that be customizable
but it just seemed meh to me

@rchern You should allow custom rep and badge counts as well, for those of us that want to misrepresent our accomplishments
6

LOL

And a custom name and gravatar, for those of us that want to misrepresent other users accomplishments

8:48 PM
rofl
i'd say create a feature request...but...maybe you shouldn't.

Question - where is a good place to use my flair?

blog profile, forum signature, your website, your SOFUE profile, anywhere?

Ah, ok.
Thanks.

anywhere you can toss an image or dynamic html (:

@Moshe I'm using it in my game forum account signature to promote Gaming

8:55 PM
Just spent 15 minutes debugging an incomprehensible issue. Somebody had written a loop which ran x from 0 to 1, with an inner loop running y from 0 to 1.

(I keep using "my", I don't think it means what I think it means)

@rchern - feature request: Can you display 15 bits of fair at a time?

o:
15?

@mmyers - um? just run the same thing twice with a different argument/parameter?

And of course, after much debugging, it turned out that the 1 was actually a lower-case l.

8:56 PM
backwards smiley - starred again. That's a good way to get rchern to flip the smileys over. Star all of her smileys.

(;
(:
q:

where l was a variable merely holding the length of some array. But that would take too long to type, I guess.

:D

(:)

@mmeyers - that is a little crazy. Wow. How'd you figure it out?

8:57 PM
oops i forgot that one
Ɑ:

Too bad there's no backwards es-tset

@rchern, when you load up SuperUser do you get {) as the site's icon?

@radp - lol

I'm afraid somebody's been pulling an upside down ternet on you for the last few years :D

@Moshe We knew x was reaching numbers greater than 1, and there was only one possible way for it to happen -- which is for that x < l to somehow be true. And the only way it could be true is if the 1 wasn't actually a 1.

8:58 PM
well, it must have been really annoying.

@rchern - yeah... or 37... can't recall the minimum flair one is supposed to have

If an argument for limiting how many stars people have per day ever comes up, this will be an excellent demonstration for the proponents
3

Single-character variables other than loop counters are now banned, and "l" is banned even from that.

well, lowercase i, should be okay, no?

Somebody got annoyed with his flag counter... :D

9:01 PM
i is okay. l is not.

Hey, MODERATOR, who removed those ridiculous smileys?

for l in range(i): #get a decent font dammit
2

@radp, what do you mean? i see the SU icon just like everybody else... {]
2

ok, back to work, i was taking a break from some work that wasn't totally not working.

@Moshe, i don't get what your saying about 15 and 37?
there's no minimum rep score for a site to be included in StackFlair if that's what you're asking

9:02 PM
@rchern - I didn't say anything aobut 15 or 37

errr
@Oded
):

@rchern - thinking about "Office Space"

@rchern - But if you want to explain where my stars on those frowneys went, you may.
@radp - I was thinking about fonts too. Anyone ever coded in a "fantasy" font, like Zapfino? (EDIT: I hope not.)
Now really, I'm back to work.

@Oded with a broken video :/

9:07 PM
@radp - at least Jeff provided a transcript :)

@Oded, hm? still not getting it?

@MichaelMrozek Stars are already limited to 20/person/day.

@rchern - never mind... my sense of humor fails me yet again

@Oded I got it.

9:12 PM
@PopularDemand - Not all is lost

Joanna:
> That's where you know, suspenders and buttons and all sorts of stuff.
> We're, uh, we're actually required to wear fifteen pieces of flair.
> quite stupid actually.

@PopularDemand Oh, ok. That's probably a bit high

Stan:
> Now, it's up to you whether or not you want to just do the bare
> minimum. Well, like Brian, for example, has 37 pieces of flair. And a
> terrific smile.
@MichaelMrozek Actually, I was wrong. Twenty stars per person per day per room.

@PopularDemand - you win a red Swingline stapler

@PopularDemand Please don't limit my staring ability!

9:16 PM
@PopularDemand - and the wreck from the whole PCLOAD LETTER deal

I have successfully set up Nagios, so I grant myself 10 minutes of chat-time as a reward!

Also, for those who still doubt that Wikipedia knows all:
> The actual meaning of the message is convoluted: "PC" is a two-character abbreviation that stands for "paper cassette", the tray that holds blank paper for the printer to use. These two-character codes are a legacy feature carried over from the first LaserJet printers, which could only use a two-character display for all printer status and error messages.

ohhhhh
i remember that scene now (;

@PopularDemand gah, jimmicky and no uppercase

@TheUnhandledException, all clear for using stackflair.com

9:22 PM
liberated yet another image from flickr and is happy

@radp Console@12px ftw

I've been liking WenQuanYi Zen Hei Mono

that's quite a font name

anyone think that Microsoft and Adobe will merge?

Be glad no one said anything like Helvetica Mono lol

9:27 PM
@PiersMyers do not want

@radp think they will do it only to annoy Apple

Pardon my Python

heh

@rchern Awesome, thanks :-D
Er
How do you say :-D in your language @rchern?
2

That said, I've been trying elastic tabstops + non mono fonts

9:30 PM
People really like the tall, thin programming fonts, huh?

it works pretty well

@PopularDemand Not I!

in my language? o:

@PopularDemand I like the pixelated font in Gaming, so...

@TheUnhandledException let me rephrase: @rchern how do you laugh without drowning?

@rchern My, what a square mouth you have!

So, I think I have you @rchern

wait, seriously?

@rchern yeah

what's that codepoint called, @rchern?

@radp "codepoint"?
@rchern's drawing those each by hand!
They're individually numbered, if you look at the backs.

9:37 PM
@rchern That just looks... weird. And is apparently unportable :-)

@AidenBell Are you licking something out of your eye? ;-)

A: Is the combined flair image broken

Jeff AtwoodWe will now be showing this image when you don't have any network accounts with 200+ reputation. Sure beats a 404... (note, I'm not kidding, this is really what we're going to do.)

@radp - yes head and trunk

StackFlair++ to be honest (;

@rchern - nice touch with the frowny

@AidenBell, that image is the official flair. I personally think it is silly. JMHO

10:06 PM
Just went to a Google presentation, really makes me want to go work there.

10:19 PM
so somebody can find issue and rollback faster

Thanks.
Well, I'm out of here. Going on a two-week vacation starting roughly whenever I make it home tonight, so it's time to wrap up some loose ends and head out. See you guys in a couple of weeks.
