Any ideas on prior art to support my answer to this?

Q: One single best answer or multiple answers in community wiki style questions?

Timo WestkämperIs it considered good practice to accumulate multiple answers into one or should one provide multiple answers in questions where no single correct answer could be defined? I am asking because it feels unfair in this case http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1362748/wanted-good-examples-of-scala-da...

I think Jeff had a blogpost early on where he said that it was absolutely OK to take information from other answers and either improve your own or combine them.
I'll see if I can find it
It was Joel
> There are lots of good ways to edit things. You can improve spelling, grammar, and even copy edit any question or answer to make it better. After all, for the next 20 years, this question will be the canonical place on the web where programmers will come to find out about enlarging fizzbars without overwriting snibbits.
As I said, I have black belt in Google-Fu

@radp - Check this bad-boy out:
"/^(?!(?:(?:\\x22?\\x5C[\\x00-\\x7E]\\x22?)|(?:\\x22?[^\\x5C\\x22]\\x22?)){255,})(?!(?:(?:\\x22?\\x5C[\\x00-\\x7E]\\x22?)|(?:\\x22?[^\\x5C\\x22]\\x22?)){65,}@)(?:(?:[\\x21\\x23-\\x27\\x2A\\x2B\\x2D\\x2F-\\x39\\x3D\\x3F\\x5E-\\x7E]+)|(?:\\x22(?:[\\x01-\\x08\\x0B\\x0C\\x0E-\\x1F\\x21\\x23-\\x5B\\x5D-\\x7F]|(?:\\x5C[\\x00-\\x7F]))*\\x22))(?:\\.(?:(?:[\\x21\\x23-\\x27\\x2A\\x2B\\x2D\\x2F-\\x39\\x3D\\x3F\\x5E-\\x7E]+)|(?:\\x22(?:[\\x01-\\x08\\x0B\\x0C\\x0E-\\x1F\\x21\\x23-\\x5B\\x5D-\\x7F]|(?:\\x5C[\\x00-\\x7F]))*\\x22)))*@(?:(?:(?!.*[^.]{64,})(?:(?:(?:xn--)?[a-z0

@LasseVKarlsen, what did you search on ?

stackoverflow combine answers into your own jeff atwood

Would have been more readable as a Lex definition

12:14 PM
@AidenBell does it check for email addresses? :)

6th or 7th link or so down, post by Joel

those are huge

@radp :P Why yes it does lol

Tim
@LasseVKarlsen "With your answers combined, I am....Jeff Atwood!"
2

@Lasse, cool thanks, I chose a different quote though, more appropriate :)

12:16 PM
Ah, yeah, that was even better :)
You can't go wrong when this idea was part of the charter from day 1 :)

He's not gonna like it, I think it probably shocked me too, way back when. But rep on answers like that is rewarding collators, who are adding value to the site

@LasseVKarlsen Where can I get one of those?

One of those what?
Sorry
If you have to ask, you can't have it
You'll have to find it!
It's a bit of a pun that, it's not too good, I'll work on it
And here is, by popular demand, popula.... ok

@PopularDemand howdy

@AidenBell Hey there. Please hold, catching up.
@LasseVKarlsen You weren't the only one, for a while...
but you have been authoritatively disproven:
132
A: Why Does Jon Skeet never sleep?

Jon SkeetOkay, just so everyone knows my rough routine, here's my timetable for weekdays. All times are UK time. 6am: get up, shave, get dressed etc (no SO presence) 6.15am: Check email/SO 6.30am: Walk to station (tiny SO presence via Android phone) 7am-8am: On train/bus to work (SO presence via 3G) 8am...

So, you know, there.
(Nice, blog.stackoverflow images actually display.)
@LasseVKarlsen Where does one earn such a black belt? I refer to that post a lot, but every time I have to remember where it's from and then Google with site:joelonsoftware.com for it.
@LasseVKarlsen FWIW I think other things that were "part of the charter from day 1" have now been rescinded, revoked, spun around, quietly forgotten... I'd need to read the specific text of the early posts for specific examples though.

Tim
12:25 PM

unrelated

@Tim I close my earlier remark.
Yeah, that blog post also encourages the dreaded What is your single favorite keyboard shortcut in Emacs? (One shortcut per answer, please). post.

Tim
@PopularDemand Please tell me that question doesn't really exist..

Yeah, I did wonder whether quoting Joel as 'authoratative' was a good idea.

@Tim I don't know. But Joel recommended it in that early "SO now exists, please come to it" post.
Also, some of his points are now considered rude/frowned upon, though not banned.
But anyways... breakfast.

12:31 PM
@radp Love that movie

Howdy

@PopularDemand Yeah, read Jeff's comment on here: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/52530/…

@Benjol Ah, yes, that's the one I was thinking of. How'd you find it? It's a comment!

@PopularDemand, haha, that's more than google fu
it's memory foo

12:39 PM
@Benjol My memory fu is way better than my Google fu, but it's not that good.

Tim
@radp For some reason my eyes are convinced there's a green highlight around the question titles, but I'm pretty sure that's not actually the case.....so...kind of.

@Popular I quoted it on meta.moms4mom once, so I knew where to find the link

@radp Some elements are smaller or in slightly different places than they are on "regular" SE sites, so it's harsher for us than for a brand-new user.
I really don't like how small the name/rep/badges/&c. bar text is, for example.

@radp, personally...yes. (;

@radp, it's not that it's unreadable, it's just migraine-inducing
2

12:41 PM
@radp, it doesn't fade well to create a Meta design, either.

@Tim there is one, I blame the screenshotting utility
@PopularDemand I didn't move stuff around; I did make some items smaller though. Also, it applies to both sites...

> Joel has some strange ideas about how things work here, but he's also not here very often is he? Perhaps those two things are related.. – Jeff Atwood♦
haha

@radp Wait, what? I didn't know that was different from the current actual live design.
Hm, how about that.

Tim
@radp Oh, I see.

Morning folks.

12:51 PM
Goodness, gamers must have good eyes, the text below the 'welcome new user' is... small.

Well, the rule I'm going with here is a paraphrase of one I read in a book about Sim City 2000 way back in the day: "Don't sacrifice realness for anything except playability." Here, the pixelated text may fit in more with the "looking like a game" theme, but man is it hard to use it for Q&A.
And I stand by my earlier comment about the small text.

I think the lack of contrast between the light green text and the white background doesn't help either

I don't have the same font as on that screenshot
Is that just a dev site or something?

he wrote an user css for it

In any case, the current look just looks weird with the different fonts

12:54 PM

Q: Bring back pixelation! (a how-to)

badpHere's a user CSS file by myself to bring more pixelation awesomeness to Gaming. Chrome users can enjoy it with Personalized Web, use the following as the match URL: ^http://(meta\.)?gaming\.stackexchange\.com/.* There is a similar extension for Firefox and a built in tool for Opera users. T...

It's like the site can't decide what fonts to use

Tim
@radp Unrelated to your modifications, but if it were up to me, I'd do away with that white border around the boxes in the right sidebar, change the background on the badges in the recent badges list (The black looks weird here/the background image is different than the tags for some reason), and make the smallest font sizes slightly larger.

Wow, question titles are so discrete on question pages, it feels like there's a bit missing - oh, no, that's on the meta, sorry

I'm actually okay with the "theme" font for little static things like the word "Questions" or the label "Interesting Tags." You're not going to be reading them all the time.

@LasseVKarlsen um, they're left to right top to bottom: arial, arial, arial, arial, arial, tahoma, arial, arial, arial, arial, arial, arial, arial, arial, tahoma, arial, arial.
I have complained about the tahoma bits.

1:05 PM
Hm, anyone know how I can use "Personalized Web" for Chrome to override the link colors on this page? (chat, here)
I tried adding css: a { color: blue; }
But doesn't take

@Lasse, probably some other rule is overriding yours

I also tried jQuery: $("a").css("color", "blue");

But i doubt jQuery will work, since I think most of the content here is dynamically built

um, weird, the rule bringing the color is a so it should work

1:07 PM
@LasseVKarlsen jQuery should work. If all else fails, try appending !important s to your CSS rules

@LasseVKarlsen Man, you picked the wrong place to complain about jQuery.

Hehe :)
I'm not complaining
Just my understanding is that jQuery only works on existing elements
If links are added after my script has run, those will not be affected

@LasseVKarlsen You can try binding to those DOM Mutation events

!important works
a { color: blue !important; }

Or just run it every half second

1:09 PM
Nah, I got what I wanted, blue and underline on links
except for the "all rooms" link, need to see if I can avoid that one, blue on red didn't look too good :)

CSS blue is kind of ugly
#3FA9FF maybe, for something milder

there's a couple ways to do it. there's a live query plugin which is basically live() but without needing an event, or you could bind to ajaxSuccess

Nah, that color blue was too light, I'll stick to plain blue
As long as I can see the links I'm happy :)
And "Personalized Web" was a much better extension than the one I've tried before

@LasseVKarlsen Erm... what was the last one? Stylish?

Hmm, let me find it, I just removed it :P

1:12 PM
Also, if you want them to be really visible, do text-decoration: blink :D

@YiJiang Stop it.

Yeah, I think that was it

No cookies for you for the rest of the day.

I put back the static underline
Blinking would be too much :)

@PopularDemand Awwww.....

1:13 PM
oh man, cookie holdout.
harsh!

@rchern You have to nip these <blink> ers in the bud, before they graduate to <marquee> and they're unsalvageable.

oof scary thought.
maybe no cookies for the rest of the week...

Tim
@rchern Heh, I was working on a page the other day and was wishing I had something like that plugin actually, awesome.

How do I get those underlines that are present on links on meta? those dotted lines I mean

I just tried $('body').children().wrap('<marquee />');

1:18 PM
@Tim, i looked it up the other day on SO...i guess i should add the caveat that i haven't actually had the time to test it.
1
Q: Jquery persistent css selector equivalent to '.live()'

DanSo today I just came across the 'live()' function that binds any future and past elements to the whatever event you choose, such as 'onclick'. Right now I'm having to set up buttons like the following each time I load a new button via ajax ... $('a.btn.plus').button({icons:{primary:'ui-icon-plu...

Tim
@LasseVKarlsen They have a border-bottom:1px dotted instead of text-decoration:underline
@rchern Thanks!

The effects are ... interesting, to say the least

@PopularDemand, the situation is clearly more serious. @YiJiang may need permanent therapy.

@rchern Hey, I was just curious

@rchern What's that? It's hard to hear you when I'm running away so quickly.

1:21 PM
Ah, dotted underlines was all I needed, just as long as I can see the links :)

Nice work @rchern, you've slipped past me in chat :-)

Mostly due to my needing to do real work

@YiJiang What have you done?

Tim
@TheUnhandledException Bah, I don't let that get in my way.

1:23 PM
@YiJiang I am confused as to the meaning of your Freehand Arrows?
@Tim I wasn't up until this week, when suddenly I had no choice :-(

@TheUnhandledException "A man chooses; a slave obeys."

And the wife decides

@PopularDemand Exactly. I am a slave to my business, LOL.

@TheUnhandledException They represent strangely hypnotic effects seen from the perspective of a <marquee> victim

(Who knows a few HTML special characters and has been reading about Bioshock Infinite? ← this guy!)

1:25 PM
@LasseVKarlsen Wise advise

But hey, at least I own part of the business. It's recursion!

The entire screen is moving...
(Then proceeds to drool onto the keyboard)

Hm, can larr s be used in chat messages?

@PopularDemand radp/badp does it all the time

@PopularDemand ← ?

1:26 PM
I have no idea how, but, he does

@TheUnhandledException I've done it before, but only by copy/pasting.
(Thanks for the assist @YiJiang; here, have a cookie.)

@PopularDemand It's so pretty... (still drooling)

Ugh. I suppose I should rescind my cookie, but... I don't really want it back, now.

@PopularDemand Less appetizing with @YiJiang 's drool all over it

@TheUnhandledException You have understood my point exactly, sir.

@anyModerator: can we get that "moving meta to NYC" message unpinned, now that the move is over?

@YiJiang Rats. That's a shame

@yiJ, all but 4 of them, for me

@rchern Yey!
What will the new URL be?

look at the url i pasted (;

@Benjol Which 4 so I know which I can use? :-)

1:33 PM
@rchern d= is nowhere near as clear as =p wouldn't you agree?

is it taking my MSO avatar because I have the most rep in MSO?

It's odd that we can have Chinese appearing, yet not arrows

@radp, yes
gotta head in to work, bbiab

1:40 PM
@rchern So you figured out the icon issue?

Too bad animated gifs are disabled here (right?). I mean, it could be just like the DeviantArt comment threads, choked full of them
Well, apparently not

@YiJiang What did we ever do to you?

I don't think you can disable animated gifs?

Okay, the cookie thing, but that's negative reinforcement, not malice!

1:45 PM
Except possibly with browser settings

I love the hot dog theme.

Well, have to get home to my cat
See you later

@rchern I do have to concur, the favicons look pretty ugly on any colored background... ):
Nice work getting them to load though! I'm glad you made it past that headache
I know nothing about graphics in .NET, but if it were PHP I could help you make the icons have alpha-licious blending
@Fosco Again I apologize for my lack of time. Stay tuned for email, same bat channel ;-)

@PopularDemand Just doing my part reminding you what the internet looks like out there

hehe
I'm just curious what's in it.. so hurry up there chief.

@YiJiang Animated GIFs A-OK

@spoulson That's great
@Fosco Aye Aye Sir!

@TheUnhandledException You brought upon righteous fury on Meta
you should be proud!

Haha, thanks :-)
I downvote very little on SOFU
So I balance it out on meta ;-)
Anyone know a quick way to split a string var up into 3 parts in bash? Let's say I have $var = 1234567890 and I want $varOne=123 $varTwo=456 $varThree=7890 ?

@TheUnhandledException, it is mostly me not knowing what to look for. Like, even the term alpha as it relates to graphics...but I'll look into how to use it. (;

Does anyone use GMail gadgets?

2:05 PM
@rchern You want to look for alpha blending
In computer graphics, alpha compositing is the process of combining an image with a background to create the appearance of partial transparency. It is often useful to render image elements in separate passes, and then combine the resulting multiple 2D images into a single, final image in a process called compositing. For example, compositing is used extensively when combining computer rendered image elements with live footage. In order to combine these image elements correctly, it is necessary to keep an associated matte for each element. This matte contains the coverage information—the...

@YiJiang, yeah, I know. the focus was more on the image itself, not the form (;
@spoulson, not really. i just converted the icons to png locally and ftp'd >_>

Sorry, I kinda jumped in in the middle

I love Google Translate
For entertainment purposes, of course
The title of the SE main site gets translated into something like

@AdamWright all good. i kinda went a bit crazy with beta testing six to eight (;

"Free, community based, utilities company Q&A site"

No, that was great. I've fixed a big chunk of it for 1.1
Just waiting for the new icon, then for a few days of testing
Some things will wait for 1.2, but things like tagging searching are in now

2:28 PM
ooooh nice (:

Decided I want to do a "Six to Eight" enthusiast edition that might cost a few bucks
Might make a whole $100 to cover the server hosting cost! :)
But still want to have a top notch free version

it's been awhile since i've looked at pricing/cuts...how much do you have to sell to bring home $100?

depends on the app cost. it's a 70% return to me
so $142 worth
so at, say, Tier 4 ($3.99), I'd need 35 sales

what are you thinking of feature differences?

I've shipped 1000 copies of the freebee, so if I can convert 5%, I'd get there
Push notification, searching with advanced tag filtering, ignored/favorited tags, and an "overview view" that amalgamates all your recent stack exchange activity into one easily digested view
plus anything else I can think of that might be worthwhile

2:34 PM
now you're just being a tease (;

It'll still be a huge time loss. If I make $100, by the time I get those features done, the total StE development time cost will pay me....about $0.30 an hour
but it might cover the hosting costs, and I'd like to have a paid app in the store

mm

need to find a way to get more downloads, really. Need an advertising push :)
One tweet by Jeff accounts for 500 of the 1000 downloads, more or less

so you just need him to tweet weekly

Just finished adding math rendering support for questions from the math/cstheory exchanges. Slowly increasing the viable userbase. Now just need them to download it

2:39 PM
@rchern you're winking with the wrong eye!

I looked at google ads, just for fun. Their system estimated $0.40 a click through!

hmm, it probably wouldn't help much, but i'd could add a link to stackflair.com

No wonder they're coining money
Ah, sweet to offer, but I wouldn't want to clutter up your UI

i don't think this is anywhere near clutter... stackflair.com
(;

@radp I've come to the conclusion that @rchern's name and avatar are red herrings, and that that account is operated by Jake Tucker.

2:46 PM
err, who?

The SE main page's "Featured Users" section includes three Simpsons avatars. I wonder if there's a market for a Simpsons SE.

@PopularDemand Heh.
