Hello chuck

1:51 AM
Hello, who is here?

I suppose I am, but only if you're about to bring a party about.

Hey, @Popular?

@GraceNote Uh oh.

I got something funky in my inbox.

@GraceNote Okay?

2:02 AM
It said, and I quote, "Besides -- and more importantly -- I'm targeting @Grace Note, not you. I mean, have you seen this comment thingadongdong?"

its kickin' off in 'ere son

@GraceNote Ah, yes, that.
You have bested me for the severalth time!
But, I am sure, not the last time.

Yeah, that last one with the comment was a pretty humorous trouncing.

Another MSO question about code golf rules? I hope this doesn't become a thing.
(For anyone who might be lurking, @Grace is referring to his infuriating defeat of me at meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/66888/… )
@rchern ping

pong!

2:11 AM
fancy spin move
Is StackFlair supposed to report on accounts of <200 rep?

sure

Can you pick which account StackFlair uses as the main?

status-nothing-to-see-here-move-along-move-along
> It's not just you! stackflair.com looks down from here.
(@rchern)

@Grace, not currently, but you could add a feature request (:
@PopularDemand whaaaaat?

2:15 AM
@rchern Initially I was pointing out that my bug report was not, in fact, a bug; but now I can't reach stackflair.com and DFEOJM confirms.

Well, prior to that, do you pick the gravatar and the display name from the same account?

@Grace, yes - the site with the highest rep

Ah. That's better than SO's global flair, then

Sooo.... Anybody willing to help me out with a few C Coding issues?

Hey, it's SonorK!

2:17 AM
It should be some simple stuff
@Shog9 lol

@PopularDemand, still down? loads for me...

@KronoS I'll give it my best* shot.
* not meant to imply quality

@KronoS No, but I'll happily post links to SO questions that answer them

so i get an error "invalid operands to binary %"

@rchern Back up for me.

2:19 AM
if you want to look at the code

oh, that's easy
damn, it's actually gonna take me longer to find a SO question than it would to just type the answer

@Shog9 I'm just starting out...
mwa ha ha ha

@rchern The hard cap of six icons is also by-design?

status-by-design

well, shoot
the answer is that % only works on integer arguments
and you're giving it a double

2:23 AM
note that pretty much everything people have mentioned i'm willing to change / add configuration options for if people want them

use fmod() or similar if you want to use floating-point arguments

@Shog9 Oh! I see... thanks!

or convert your double to an int before asking for the modulus

Whooosh!!!!! Right over my head....

Ahh, hehe. I see Pekka's comment now

2:26 AM
@KronoS ;-) that's why I was after a SO question... Unfortunately, I'm finding them for every language BUT C...

@Shog9 That's why I actually check with the guys at SU... This is more basic stuff than what's found on SO (Chat I mean)

well, you'd get a good answer, it's just that there are a lot more [C#|Java|Python] newbies on SO than there are for C
the basic question you have to answer is, given an expression like this
3.4 % 2
...do you expect to get 1, or 1.4 as the result?
if you expect 1, then use (int)3.4 % 2
if you expect 1.4, then use fmod(3.4, 2)

whoa! that's way cool...
changing it to int originally is what i did and no longer gets the error...

here we go:

Q: How Can I Convert Float to Int with Modulus in C?

HollerTrainI am so confused with Modulus in C. I am writing a small script that allows the user to input their two number vars, then they can either add, subtract, multiply, divide (easy) or modulus (haven't caught this one yet). What would I be doing wrong in this? I get the "invalid operands to binary %" ...

sigh
y'know what I really hate about VB?
EVERYTHING
But, for VB.NET in particular, the VS IDE's habit of inserting a newline when I hit enter after selecting an Intellisense item
Newlines are so rarely the appropriate next character in VB

2:45 AM
hit tab instead?

@Shog9 : Do you recon Vi+autotools would be an apt replacement lol

@AidenBell Heh! probably would annoy me less. But then again, if I had that choice, I wouldn't be working with this code and would be less annoyed to start with.

@Shog9 Can sympathize there. Mind you I only started using Eclipse rather than the "traditionals" of Vi, Make etc less than 8 months ago
Vi didn't eat 900Mb of RAM just to edit Python files. That's for sure.

@rchern yeah, that works, in that it eats the key. But I'm used to using Enter for C++ and C#, where VS kindly eats that key as well, so it's a hard habit to break.
@AidenBell yeowch!

2 hours later…
5:07 AM
Database migration starting in 3 ... 2 ....1 fingers crossed

Tim
Heh, good luck.

@Tim - the script actually displays that image too lol

Tim
@AidenBell Nice, hahah

Usually followed by an exception and a backtrace :P

Tim
I'm actually in the process of picking a database server right now..no data to migrate, though, heh.
That sounds...less nice.

5:11 AM
not this time, oh no, been good and tested
@Tim - Ah the database decision
you going to get "down with the kids" and go NoSQL?

Tim
@AidenBell Nah, someone decided to go with MySQL, but I'm tempted to switch it to PostgreSQL. I don't think that NoSQL is particularly appropriate for this scenario, though I'd have to read more about the various offerings out there to be sure.

@Tim Your gut is probably right ;) Not used PostgreSQL much but I hear nothing but good things. Not looked at clustering on that end much though. MySQL is pretty much staple these days, just not sure about the 'quality' of it at times
Or which branch is best lol

Tim
@AidenBell Yeah, we're fortunate in that we only have to serve a limited number of users
We do have a pretty sizable amount of data though
@AidenBell Heh, that's true too :P

@Tim - My choice, Relational-XML on disk with Memcache and 3pc jokes ;) Good luck with it

Tim
@AidenBell Hahah, thanks

1 hour later…
6:21 AM
ok chat house ads are up on webapps, gaming, ubuntu, rpg

@JeffAtwood - [woken]

Tim
Nifty

@JeffAtwood The chat ads on meta.gaming points to the non-existent chat.meta.gaming

yeah, I am administering punishment to Kevin right now for that
it's for his own good

6:24 AM
yeah yeah

@JeffAtwood - Question: Any downsides to the OpenID route for logins? I like it in principle, but has it caused any headaches?

Q: About your f***ing website.

Jeff AtwoodPresented for your enjoyment-slash-amusement. Email received by team@stackoverflow.com from Name Jesus Christ Almighty, what a f***ing mess of a website. I'm trying to post a question. Just the one, you know, f***ing question. So I sign up for an ID and I'm sent an email that doesn't real...

that's an upside!
<mentally adds a letter to Yi's first name>

@YiJiang - Lovely stuff
I mean f****ng lovely stuff

6:45 AM
@YiJiang the meta chat links are fixed

@radp Bored are we?

10:40 AM
@Diago linked from Jeff on Twitter
I'm having fun otherwise:
Go figure, I remove the nVidia drivers and next thing I know I get a proper bootloading sequence (and no X.) Yay!
oh and today's nightlies of Chromium crash on launch, yay!

Q: Why should the FAQ be community owned?

David SegondsI have noticed a lot of comments indicating that FAQs should be community owned. Why is this a good practice?

A question that started CW has non CW answers...

Tim
I'm not sure that I'd want to see what my development visualization looked like, heh.

11:47 AM
@Tim Interesting approach. Not sure I understand the vertical axis in the graph. The referenced XKCD uses vertical to represent relative physical location.

Tim
@spoulson Yeah, I was a little confused about that as well.

12:02 PM
I also reported this in the survey

Decided to try out some MFC C++ coding yesterday. Man, do I feel like a fish out of water. Haven't touched C++ in so long.

is the inbox broken? not just taling about meta...on other sites the link is there just empty, even though i have a red number saying there should be somtehing.

Tim
@rchern Seems alright for me (though I don't have any new updates)

yeah, mine isn't even showing activity i've read

Tim
Hmm

12:23 PM
weird, seems fixed now

[gripe]I hate how arbitrary parts of Windows and certain apps can't handle more than 256 character long pathnames[/gripe]

need feedback

Someone created a project with a 63 character long name, now build fails because pathnames are too long

Tim
@rchern Maybe the MultiCollider SuperDropdown caused a rift in spacetime that temporarily gobbled up your messages?

is the above understandable enough? do you get no-glyph-squares there?

Tim
12:28 PM
@spoulson Heh, I remember one of my favourite instances of that
MSN Messenger used to try and create directories for itself that were too long for it to handle.

I'm convinced the only reason most apps can't handle long pathnames is because of: #define MAX_PATH 256

@radp This is incredible.

We migrated from TAR to PAX archives because our tools produced too long pathnames...

@PopularDemand as in unbelievable as in hardly believable as in I doubt this is even possible?

Tim
@radp I second the incrediblity

12:30 PM
@radp No, I wasn't being literal.

oh, okay.

It's... awesome.
@radp As for this, it was migrated. Were the answers also migrated from SO perhaps, when it wasn't CW?

No clue, the timeline doesn't show the migration event

Yeah... all those answers are from Oct 17, 2008 though, so who knows what the heck was going on.

I wanted to use ╳ instead of ░ for the area that should never be used by the OS but I don't think that glyph is covered well enough

Tim
12:32 PM
@PopularDemand I had originally thought that, but the edit history suggests the question started as CW, got non-CW answers, then was migrated (almost a year later)

Is there a link to the timeline view, or do you have to punch in the URL manually?

punch in the URL manually or install greasemonkery that puts the link for you

Tim
Originally I had thought it was migrated first, but then I realized that I can't read dates.

basically turn question/{id} into posts/{id}/timeline
no idea why it's posts/{id}/timeline instead of questions/{id}/timeline, given you can't have timelines of answers.

Greasemonkey is you people's solution to everything.

12:37 PM
@PopularDemand Why not? I mean, for everything else there's jQuery....

@YiJiang I'm not a fan of external scripts. There's... uncertainty there.

@PopularDemand You can put up a [feature-request] for it, but we all know how those end...

Tim
@YiJiang ...with someone providing a Greasemonkey script and that being used as a reason not to implement the feature?

@YiJiang I don't actually care about this feature one whit. I just don't like how people always jump to Greasemonkey as the solution to everything.

@PopularDemand Agreed. I dislike Greasemonkey and prefer not to use it.

12:41 PM
@PopularDemand I didn't, actually.

it has its uses. if it is being used as an excuse for not officially implementing, that's meh.

@PopularDemand Also there is situation, like at work, where we are not allowed to use it.

@PopularDemand I'm don't really care. The "features" are minor enhancements that can't do any harm. And the scripts are fully open - it's not like they're obfuscated or anything

Anyone want to recommend their blogging platform (in the process of shortlisting some)?

Tim
Ah, that's a little less ambiguous :P

12:53 PM
@AidenBell Wordpress (duh)

@AidenBell ComicPress (way more fun for your readers)

@YiJiang Noted, @PopularDemand noted, @Tim hehe

@AidenBell Expression Engine

@AidenBell A lot of paper, a webcam and a dedicated team of employees who flip the pages based on real-time user requests.

@PopularDemand - Top of my list already, next to Tumblr ;P

12:59 PM
@AidenBell Good man. My work here is done.

@AidenBell And also (shudder) Blogger.com

@YiJiang - Yea, blogger is the 'if you are retarded' option

@AidenBell Hey now, I used to use Blogger. It's idiotproof easy and I didn't need any features besides "publish."
Why bother with a nice setup if you're just writing a series of quick notes?

@PopularDemand - <strike>True, but might as well just cat an email into a .html</strike>
or something
Scratch that, the sentence was dangerously close to : "roll your own blogging engine"

@AidenBell Ooh. That could be fun.

1:06 PM
lol

@AidenBell On the topic of email, there's always Posterous

@YiJiang - Yup, just looking at them now.

There is a lot of stuff on the "legal" page. I don't think I ever noticed that it had tabs, before. Or maybe an earlier version didn't have them.

Tim
There's a "Writing a Book About Stack Exchange" section?

I see a film: "The Answering of Questions Network"

1:19 PM
haha

Good morning.

1:41 PM

Tim
@AidenBell Hahah, brilliant.

hahaha
what's it say at the bottom?

@AidenBell You forgot the CC Wiki logo and copyright logos :P

@rchern - Just random text to look a bit like credits. Couldn't be arsed with anything more than copy-and-paste. The actual text is: "starring some dude with a big hat -- directed by some guys who couldn't care less"
lol
@Diago - I know, Jeff and Joel need their billion dollar yacht

@AidenBell Doubt it. They'll just get some more VC funding.

1:50 PM
@AidenBell Really, not bad. But you didn't get the "Social Network" style right. What you really need is to typeset it in Helvetica, justified, then make the last line italics.
On second thought, to capture the SO Meta style
Drop some freehand circles, arrows, then add some totally wacky drop shadow
And a slice of waffles for good measure. Or two.

Tim
Don't forget the marquee-like animation.

Oh, and before I forget. The hot dog stand color theme. That should do it.

It needs up/down-vote buttons there as well, perhaps in front of each sub-title
-11: They said it shouldn't be asked...
-7: They said there was no answer ...
+73: They were wrong
-3895: In Cinemas in 6-8 weeks time

@LasseVKarlsen @YiJiang - Yea, that makes it better hehe
This isn't a CW ffs lol

@AidenBell Stop it! I'm running out of stars!

1:59 PM
@AidenBell And then you post it on Meta for Always Friday and.... Profit!

Tim
There should be an obligatory
[status-bydesign]
Hmm

Q: Are rumors of a film true? I hope so by golly!

Aiden BellI heard that there is a film being made. If so, please consider my poster: Then people at the Tavern had some suggestions: Anyways, I hope people make some good suggestions for plot etc ... Good luck with filming and stuff. Aiden

I better not get downvoted-to-hell lol
Also, people with privs, add tags
@Diago ^

lol, that's where that images is comming from

@AidenBell Cool!
@LasseVKarlsen I think you need to make the votes points an answer!

2:15 PM
hahaha epic

Tim
Heh, that was much more entertaining than working on this damn database schema.

2:30 PM
Morning everyone

Tim
Hello

allo

@TheUnhandledException Mornin'

How's everyone doing this fine morning?

procrastinating -ly

2:32 PM
Yes, especially when we have some entertainment on MSO this morning

@HoxLyxVierx Ha, I missed it, what is it, what @AidenBell linked above?

@TheUnhandledException yes

@TheUnhandledException Unicodily

@radp Would you like a rainbow with that?

unicode rainbow? why yes please!
can't wait to use U+FF0000 to set text to red :P

2:35 PM
@radp it would be amazing if a multi-color, multi-codepoint rainbow spewed forth from nowhere

maybe with enough cleartype abuse...
@AidenBell for now you can enjoy going all the way with mother effing text shadown

@radp - awesome :) Rainbowy

Crap, my Ubuntu VM won't boot after a software update

@TheUnhandledException what's your error?

Somehow it's not finding my root device by UUID
Entgering GRUB and changing to root=/dev/sda1 worked...
oh, crap, no it didn't

2:49 PM
:S

Can you mount the virtual drive?

About to netboot and see

Ah well, here's my take:

@YiJiang Have a star :-)

2:51 PM
@YiJang and another.
Morning people.

Does Jon look sinister enough?

@YiJiang - Nice

@TheUnhandledException - I got some stuff done, so I may reply to your email early next week.
Managed to get the title of a shout cast stream showing in an app. It was very hackish though.

I don't like the title

Loading HTML into an embedded browser and calling a webpage like that

2:53 PM
The Chronicles of Atwood maybe?

skeetwood?

Skeetwood Mac

skeetwoolsky

The Chronicles of Skeetwood. The King of Teh Reps

How do I star in mobile view?

2:54 PM
@TheUnhandledException - I am sure you found this: ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1566630
I think it should just follow the plot of "The Blues Brothers" with a few alterations

@AidenBell Ah, had not seen that yet, thanks!

Gotta go. Enjoy your moviemaking. I can edit if y'all want. I have premiere pro. (and experience)
