12:00 AM
pretty good.. I can't complain really
had a great 2 days on SO (while at work (what's wrong with me!!)), waiting to see the weekly ladder once the day switches over

nice
i hit the rep cap for the first time ever, and then have had 2 < 50 days i think

doh.. i hit it 2 days in a row now, that has to mean something..
it's crazy to me how much Jon Skeet can make in a day, with all the accepted answers over the cap.. 365 rep, so like 9-10 accepted answers after capping.

yeah
ok, i take it back, i got 100 rep yesterday....err, well it is 3 past the hour.

Argh, stupid Greasemonkey.
Well, more or less stupid me, but I'm content with blaming Greasemonkey.
Was wondering why the timestamps weren't showing, heh.
I had installed a local copy of the chat script to test my changes, and that was being run before the one I installed directly off of Github.

ah

Hey there @Fosco, how are you this evening?
in XMPP, 14 secs ago, by The Unhandled Exception
Having a sockpuppet is far more entertaining than is should be

@TheUnhandledException oh hey.. long time no see
How is the XMPP project coming along?

@Fosco Yeah, I was on vacation last week. It was great
@Fosco Almost ready to release an early alpha. Trying to fix my JSON poller right now

woot!

Except I have once again overestimated my ruby skills, haha
Which makes progress slow ;-)

hehe, you'll get there..

12:21 AM
he needs to iron his socks first

ROFLOL
You're right @Fosco and @rchern. I just ironed out an extra {

2 hours later…
2:29 AM
@TheUnhandledException how was SC?

@MarkE It was great, thanks!

awesome
slow night here it seems

@MarkE sure is. sorry, I'm trying to work some bugs out of XMPP integration, so I'm not very responsive atm...

shrug

@rchern So, the next feature we need to add to the userscript is the ability to time travel, so that we can use it to go back in time and recreate the scenario that messed up your message the first time. ;)

hehehe

Bonus points if we can do it in under 100 LOC.

(:
anybody ever see asp.net post an empty form if you hit enter with a DefaultButton specificed? if i actually press the enter button the click event fires and processes the data, but not if i hit enter.

6:37 AM
shakes fist at pgAdmin

2 hours later…
8:22 AM
@rchern Why did you introduce that timestamp feature?
The space to tab conversion has messed up the commit diff, so I can't find the line you added

@rchern webforms? I gave up trying to fathom that beast a long time ago

@Benjol Jeff's Twitter stream seems to be the official announcement area for site graduation

@YiJiang, They started blocking Twitter here 18 months ago - just about the same time I got bored with it :)
@Jin, cool

Jin
the photography theme is interesting...
i hope i'll get @YiJiang's seal of approval later..

9:12 AM
@Jin blushes I'm just a small guy with a very big mouth

@Jin, hm, no preview on meta

Jin
photography has been a challenge for me to be honest.

impatient ;)

Jin
@Benjol i'm working on it now, will post tomorrow

ok. well they would all be a challenge for me. It's so much easier to comment on something that exists that to come up with something from nothing.

once i'm done with the first waves of SE sites, I probably will go back and re-visit. some tweakings will have to be done.

Oh geesh... half an hour and this spam still hasn't gathered enough flags? meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/61960/…

+1 now :)

9:39 AM
Ben kicked it
But seriously... spamming on meta - talk about hostile territory

2 hours later…

We need a picture of Jeff on the MSO homepage with the speech bubble "Welcome to meta.stackoverflow -- it's a little crazy, I caution you"

Q: Feedback wanted: Ability to disagree with flags in chat

balphaJust like the actual Q&A sites (maybe even more so), chat needs a way to govern itself, i.e. put much of the moderating duties in the hand of the community, and not only a tiny group of moderators. That's why chat, just like the main sites, has a flagging system that enables (almost) anybody ...

12:39 PM
@MichaelMrozek "Welcome to MSO - home of the Welbog."

@YiJiang you don't like it? i'm not a fan of the show-me-the-time-sometimes implementation (:
@YiJiang yeah, work project. i'd LOVE to convert it to mvc, but haven't had the time yet, and will probably have to be done on my own time

Did you add showing a timestamp on every post? I should probably sync

i did indeed

@rchern And I'm not a fan of the Let's-stick-this-giant-timestamp-on-every-post feature

):

12:43 PM
@rchern If you can reduce it to the hh:mm format currently used then maybe I'll consider using it

I like it except that it blurs with the post ID, and the existing timestamps are still there

o:
no they're not.

(at least, they shouldn't be. i added code to remove them, and i haven't seen them on mine)

@rchern I think he means that the id and the timestamp is currently sharing a single timestamp bubble

12:46 PM
just FYI, this will add a timestamp to every (currently visible) monologue (not every post):
$(".monologue").each(function(){$(this).addClass("needs-timestamp").putInto(containers.timeTreatmentNeedy);});

Are monologues blocks of posts from one person?

@MichaelMrozek, do you have anything else messing with the elements inside div.messages?

@rchern I don't like them because they take up far too much space

@rchern I don't think so

@MichaelMrozek yes, the "speech bubble" is officially called "monologue"

12:49 PM
hmmmmmmmmmmm, there's a line conveniently missing in my project file than in the live version i'm running off on
$(this).prev(".timestamp").remove();

@rchern Why do you deny me the full power of the userscript? WHY?

um, oops?

and committed/pushed.

Thanks

must've somehow deleted the line between copying it into my installed version and committing? shrugs

"somehow"

12:55 PM
hrmph.

@balpha, re your question, how many >10k users are around in the various chats at any given time?

50% off O'Reilly 'In a Nutshell' e-books, one day only: oreilly.com/store/ddntz.html

@Benjol interesting question, I don't have that data at hand; but of the 40 most active users on chat.SO I count 13 with 10k+

@YiJiang, any ideas on how to better present the info?
heh, i just got very confused
you linked to page 2

@balpha, well, I'm a way off 10k for the moment, but I wondered if there was a risk of having no-one around to handle flagged posts at certain times of day..., but 13/40 seems pretty good to me

1:10 PM
i like chat.meta better but I'll never have rep here.

2

@balpha excellent!

@rchern Like I said, use the hh:mm format, or even better, just leave it be
I don't see the need to know the timestamp of every message to the second!
If I ever need it I can always use the menu on the side

can i get the link to the user script again?

1:19 PM
@YiJiang, is there a clever way to get it from there without having GM eat the html?

ty

@Benjol There's a link on the top where @rchern has linked to a copy of the script on her servers

hang on

Else just turn GM off while you get to the correct page

k my server is updated now (;

1:20 PM
@rchern, I am getting 404 :)

you can also get the raw of the readme and change the filename ala github.com/rchern/StackExchangeScripts/raw/master/…

@TheUnhandledException Hmmm.... needs entities support. Otherwise, brilliant!

@YiJiang Think I agree with you on hh:mm, or something to differentiate - even if it's a pipe between

@Benjol I've already commented out the lines that add in the timestamp. It's just too big and unuseful for me

@YiJiang, with the ctrl+up, I'm thinking I might not even need the post ids anymore

@YiJiang Thanks. Yes, it does need to decode HTML entities, and also needs a lot of other things, like it keeps sending messages when you leave the room, it's read-only, only that rom works, etc etc
@balpha Haha, thanks, going to keep me on my toes huh? :-)

1:43 PM

@TheUnhandledException Nice Work!!
I loaded the script and refreshed, but it's definitely not on.

@Fosco When you install the scripts, did it say that the script will run on * sites?

do i need more than the chatmods script? i use chrome, so it didn't specify sites.

@Fosco It should, even in Chrome
Use the link to the script in the repo descriptions, instead of directly clicking on the file name

k.. installed it from local and it worked.

1:58 PM
@Benjol, not everybody (me) uses the navigation @Tim wrote though. I do sometimes, but not usually

I don't either; I still want to do something where all you need to do is use the last digit of a post ID to refer to it (if it's in the last ten posts)

@balpha it would be more fun to randomly swap incomming messages so that it looks like people are talking to themselves

note to everyone who doesn't know: this is our sysadmin talking :)

@MichaelMrozek, nice idea, let me know when it's done ;)
bye all.

Somebody mass-downvoted that flagging MSO post. That's odd

bah, i don't like coming back to the room and seeing (removed)
what did you say?!

try /history
just a password in the wrong window

we have no /history though i've been meaning to write it. but that won't work for deleted posts (;

3:01 PM
@MichaelMrozek You're right. Why... hmmm...

@rchern Maybe you should make it work for deleted posts :)

@MichaelMrozek /timetravel

@MichaelMrozek and just how will that work? (;

You're the one with the magic script; I'm sure you can figure it out

@MichaelMrozek, you're due for a commit taps fingers

3:10 PM
Oh right, I was working on something too..I remember now, heh.

@TimStone Well, go on... ;)

First I need to finish the database schema I was working on yesterday, heh. :P
Which I'll do now.

This is one of the most ugly open source ads submitted...

about time to cut the # questions on SO in half then, eh @MichaelMrozek?

@radp Hahah ;)

2 hours later…
6:45 PM
Man, if work would just slow down for a bit, I could finish up XMPP and make the first commit!
Damn pesky clients/bosses ;-)

@TheUnhandledException I know, right? Heh :P

@TimStone If only all I had to do was to site in chat all day long, my life would be sublime :-)
Oh, to be @MarcGravell...

;)

How's your day @Tim?

@TheUnhandledException actually, right now I'm driving a RC robot through the offices in NY :)

6:54 PM
@balpha AHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, That's so great!
@balpha video or it didn't happen ;-)

@TheUnhandledException Not too bad, I suppose. I have so much stuff I want to get done, but very little of it seems to be making any progress...it's also obscenely rainy today, meh.
Hahah

driving? helicopters are the hot new thing!

@Zypher would you please be my witness that you guys have to avoid stepping on me all the time?

@TimStone Man I know how that goes
@balpha Equip your robot with a death ray, then people will avoid stepping on you XD

what does your robot look like?

Jin
Rovio!

so...you look at people's feet?

@balpha it can't go up stairs though :(

7:01 PM
@rchern To see if they have sockpuppets or not...
@PiersMyers But @GregHewgill 's heles can!

ah well in that case, just strap an iron on the robot and follow @TheUnhandledException around

@PiersMyers We used to say that about the Daleks too, and look what happened there
eyes balpha's robot with considerable suspicion

Does balpha's robot have a text to speech engine?

@rchern Sounds like something out of The Jetsons

imagines the robot doing live oneboxes on demand

7:08 PM
lol

@balpha yes always in our way
and then you get really creepy and just stare at me

13 mins ago, by The Unhandled Exception
@balpha video or it didn't happen ;-)

@Zypher no, that's when Geoff drives

@Zypher Awwww, how sweeeet! The robot has a crush on the sysadmin!

Like magic, @MarcGravell appears when mentioned
@balpha "crappy quality, though, and only in IE" -- fitting

new contest ... find the rovio

7:11 PM
@balpha sounds like a job for jQuery!!

dun dun duh DUN

I keep saying it has an API ... but will the developers listen to me
NOOOOO

@radp $('rovio').find() ?

When he's done with that he can use jQuery to let the robot climb stairs as well

@MichaelMrozek (via a userscript)

7:13 PM
@TheUnhandledException $('robot.rovio#balfah').first().show()

@radp I was wondering why my code kept giving me an unhandled exception...

one api method is called GOHOMEANDDOCK() -- that sounds so cruel, I could never say that to poor rovio

@TheUnhandledException Your code raises yourself as an exception? That sounds like an awesome program!

@rchern If they install a death ray, maybe they'll let you borrow it so you can go "show" it to the people who programmed the site you were fighting with earlier. ;)

better than GETYOURASSHOMEYOULAZYPILEOFBOLTS()

i should've said Helvetica Neue, better for screen than Helvetica.

@TimStone ooooh I like this idea!!!

I figure using the robot gives a comfortable degree of plausible deniability.

14 minutes...

I tried to stop the robot, but it has a mind of its own!!

7:28 PM
Though you might have to extend the API to include a random condition in which the robot becomes self-aware and subsequently enraged.

@Jin You're a chat mod -- infinite editing power :)

Jin
i'm a mod?
oh i guess i am

ohhh, who brought popcorn?

Anyone familiar with pgAdmin before I take it out back and shoot it? :P

@TimStone I am somewhat familiar with phpMyAdmin... not pgAdmin
Maybe they're similar?
what's the specific issue?

7:59 PM
pgAdmin is the desktop tool for PostgreSQL...and unfortunately this is a PostgreSQL-specific problem, heh.

ahhh, sorry

I can't figure out where the hell the New Type dialog is, because PostgreSQL doesn't have an enum type like MySQL. :/

@TimStone Really??
wow

(instead you define your own types as the return of an enum function)
They made it betterer. :P

Oh, like that :-)

8:01 PM
It makes sense, and I know how to write the query for it, but that won't go over as well if I have to explain it to others.
And I know the dialog exists, it's right there!
Son of a...
You have to go into the program options and enable Types to show up in the browser tree, heh.

@TimStone I love it when developer hide options :-)

Yeah, me too...nothing like 30 minutes wasted ;)
Although that's probably no worse than my usual slacking, so it's all good. I'm just happy to have found it.

At least I can sit up enough to turn VPN on, now. Couldn't do that yesterday.

I hope you feel better soon!

8:47 PM
Thanks.

Ouch, that sucks. Feel better!

Don't work too much. Get lots of rest! :-)

@TheUnhandledException I have just been informed that my deadline is Friday 4 pm.

Well, that sucks

A lot will depend on how well some DAOs were written, and how quickly I can understand them.
We'll see what we see.
How are you guys?

8:50 PM
I'm well thanks. Rested after a week off and have dove right back into work
(And XMPP integration, I have a very rough alpha almost released)

in XMPP, 7 hours ago, by The Unhandled Exception

i wish i could help with that. but i don't know ruby ):

Read only, only one room works, entities aren't decoded, and it keeps sending messages to you even after you leave the room. But it's a start.
@rchern I'm open to other language suggestions! Ruby is just the only language I know which is a. suited to multi-threaded, long running applications, and b. has an XMPP component extension

it's been quite some time since i've done anything that isn't vb.net, c#, or javascript

8:54 PM
I was just about to ask :-)
I would love to write it in JavaScript... but that's not well suited to long-running server-side tasks

I don't know what to do with this feature request:
2
Q: view source link?

Yossi FarjounThis, I know: I know that if a question (or answer) has been edited you can click on the revisions link to see the source, and I know that if you have enough rep you can pretend to edit and see the source, and I know that you can do some silly hack-job taking the postid and putting it manuall...

c# probably would be, is c# multithreaded?

hmm, i guess i did some java recently for a side project though it was a pretty simple project

I used to do a lot of PHP, but now it's Java and JavaScript, heh.

@PopularDemand I kinda like it...

8:56 PM
sounds like a job for SEModifications.user.js (;

@TimStone Java would probably be a great language choice for the XMPP integration, but I know next to no java
@rchern Answer and I'll upvote (;

what's the url to what he wants?

@rchern Eh, this is actually complicated because you don't have the revision ID

ah
so i see

@TimStone Are you saying she deserves a bounty for userscripting it?

8:59 PM
I actually did want a revisions link for posts without edits though, I meant to commit that.
Since you can't see migration events in the timeline..

yeah, i've thought about adding that too
