8:00 PM
Now passing through Kramertown

gggrrr Mako templates why do you hate me so much

Is putting a space before punctuation a thing in other languages? I see it all the time on posts, I'm not sure why it happens

what , like this ?

@MichaelMrozek I see it too, annoys me :-)

@AidenBell Yes

8:04 PM
Now entering Brunswick, NC

see ya later guys

Later @MarkE

Good bye

@radp What does the timeout do?

A: Java 1.6 java.lang.IndexOutOfBoundsException Question

Tim StoneInside of the loop, you remove an item from the list: attributes.remove(splitAtt); // Line 75 On the second go around, the call to attributes.get(splitAtt) will then reference an index no longer in the list. Since you haven't removed that last element before you enter the loop, your print stat...

Oh, I actually meant to link to just the question.
But I like how the first two answers were "OMG you didn't start your loop with 0!"

8:06 PM
uh oh no bars

@TheUnhandledException A message asking people to stay on topic is shown. The input box is hidden. Numbers fade in counting down to 0. When 0 is reached discussion resumes -- it'll usually be on the countdown, however, not on the actual room topic.

@TheUnhandledException It takes away your type-y box and makes numbers fly out at you

Awesome, people in the PHP SO chat were all like, "You don't need to stay on topic!!!"
Now I can prove them wrong, lol

Hahah, lay the smack down.
I have 4646 SO rep, nice. Yay number patterns.

8:10 PM
@MichaelMrozek Not that I'm aware of, I really don't get why people do that..
@radp ..You win.
Also, someone needs to fix the Gaming rep link, argh.

Yeah. @jin

@radp - so I smell U****u?

Yeah, I'm on Ubuntu.

thats the one

I love Ubuntu. Rather, I love apt.

8:13 PM
Sorry, had to star it out to avoid offending myself ;)

"apt-get upgrade" is just priceless

Damn you envelope notifying me of things that the global inbox already did for the 400th time!

also because you can't do it for for-pay apps.

./configure; make; make install ftw

shakes fist and leaves

8:14 PM
lol

I refuse to install packages wherever possible because they put things in places that makes me confused, source code installs FTW indeed.

it's actually -- ./configure; make; debug; make; debug; make; .... ; cross fingers; make install

okay, I'm sorry
the real magic is "apt-get update"

Fedora ftw

"Hey, you know, you can upgrade 129 programs on your disk! Let me do it for you, please! "

8:15 PM
It doesn't patronise me.
yum update is the same thing
Does apt do delta-patching?
for upgrades?

I don't care about apt vs yum vs yast vs pacman vs etc
What I care about is having this system vs what the situation is on Windows and Mac

all right, relax
;)

it's like the git vs hg wars, they should war onto svn, not between themselves ;)

I don't think there's a package manager that doesn't provide what you're describing
$ emerge -NuD world

@MichaelMrozek exactly, the point is the package manager
any will do, I haven't tried many but am comfortable with deb's

8:18 PM
@radp Well, "I love apt because it provides a feature that all other package managers also provide" isn't a compelling argument to use apt :)

I said, "I love Ubuntu because it has a package manager, apt"
If I didn't say it, that's what I meant and I apologize.

ding ding
round 1, @MichaelMrozek logic bonus for @radp

looks around in confusion

+1

I think there should be a "chat rep"
"for when shooting the breeze pays"

8:21 PM
If it were star-based @rchern would have about 20k

I shouldn't have found that nearly as funny as I did

All smileys must now be sent in all orientations to accommodate some of our more... unusual users

ha

Ooo, I just had an idea. I'm going to send all my messages as text embedded inside an image, so I can edit or delete it whenever I want
fights the power

@MichaelMrozek - +1
If you can get the image on your server to have the right ID +10
Also, email me the script :P

8:31 PM
What I really need is to figure out the IPs of all the mods, so I can return images to them that say things like "I think chat is keen!", and images to everyone else that say "Two days until plan Overthrow Balpha begins!"

i thought that operation started yesterday.
i mean
ummmm

I retract that comment

aww
i didn't see aforementioned comment

Related to the perceived attractiveness of the image despite its feline composition

8:38 PM
back for an unknown length of time

Hello @TheUnhandledException

now in South Carolina!
Hello @AidenBell
Here as long as signal lasts
only 2 bars

nice ... no Starbucks WiFi?

cell bars :-) tethered 3G
traveling down SC Highway 9E

ah. I thought mobile connectivity was total horse crap in the US?

8:40 PM
wherever that may be, lol
I'm in the boonies @AidenBell
very poor coverage here

Goonies?

@AidenBell mobile connectivity at my home is good

Considers uploading some large img to @TheUnhandledException 's low-bandwidth enjoyment
@TheUnhandledException work or pleasure trip?

@AidenBell Pleasure. First vacation in years
signing off chat to dedicate all bandwith to google maps

Have a good time :) @TheUnhandledException

8:44 PM
later everyone! (if these messages are even sending lol)

lol
also
what the ...

9:03 PM
Isn't there a "Why do you participate in Stack Overflow?" question somewhere on MSO from forever ago?

iunno

PacMan clone #19405, brought to you by Stack Overflow:

@PopularDemand There's this:
22
Q: Why do programmers help each other without pay?

jrhicksWhy do programmers help each other without pay? Mailing Lists IRC Stack Overflow Blogs Open Source What are some analogies to other professions?

@MichaelMrozek Thanks.

out of curiosity is the transcript googleable and has it come up on any Google search of yours yet?

9:18 PM
@radp Transcript of what?

chat
this very room for example.

0
A: Will chat be searchable?

Jeff AtwoodYes, chat shows up in Google search, as all chats are public by default. Only the transcripts are indexed, though. For example: http://www.google.com/search?q=%22seeding+is+nice+and+all,+but+it+feels+too+much+like+rep+whoring%22

I thought as much, but has it came up to you yet?

@radp No. But I haven't searched for anything that would've been discussed here.

Hmm. That exactly the opposite of what I'd always heard, I thought chat wasn't going to be in Google

9:24 PM
btw that quote comes from the Gaming chat room :D

@MichaelMrozek That... explains a lot.

@MichaelMrozek - Best behavior
Indexed indeed

Hey @AidenBell! You're on the internet!

Crap, this is the Internet? I thought it was one of those Facetweet things

I thought it's called MyTwitFace?

9:33 PM
My MSO and WA profiles made the first page of google results for my name, but not SO or Unix. Fail

That's my first result. Which isn't me
SO second

Heh. @Google: 'a' != 'e'

I wanna bunk my SO to top

"Who the Hell is Aidan Bell?" is a nifty slogan, though...

Mine is "WTF is an Aiden Bell LOL"

9:36 PM
@sepp2k Good thing Friar Tuck didn't come up with a similar slogan...

hehe

Shame that there's no way to capture the context when you star something

@sepp2k the link to the left should do

yeah, if someone is wondering what in the world something was about, they can click the link and they'll go to the transcript

Hello

9:38 PM
which will show them the context

Smooth

and then a bunch more of me

You'd think there'd be more people in the world named Chacha102
Parents just aren't creative these days

what is this? google-myself day?

9:40 PM
Rchern, you blog looks weird...

weird as in, not updated in 2 maybe 3 years?

"I was mentored in PHP by my father who currently works as Web Developer/System’s Designer."

and you haven't updated twitter in 6 days!!!

Awesome

Where did you find that?

9:41 PM
@Chacha102 on your website. I wish my dad did that lol

@Chacha102 i don't even remember what my last tweet was

You mean chacha102.com -> profile -> resume?
thats a lot of clicks..

Curiosity. Your site is nice lol

:)
I have a design for my new resume page
I just haven't put it live/added all the content yet

Nice use of the SO/SE tag-style for your likes

9:44 PM
You mean Shares?
err
You realize you are on careers.stackoverflow.com?

Yeah..

Oh yea

Thats my Careers Profile

lol didn't even notice

9:45 PM
:)

I should update that Marketing Director to be till Jun 2011..

is a dunce
@rchern hows that userscript coming on? I want /me functionality

I need to make something with 102content.com
right now it is just my files
BTW, searching for Tyler Chacha gives you the same set of results

@AidenBell, hmm, hadn't thought about adding /me. @TheUnhandledException, @Shog9, and @balpha wrote one for that but the point isn't to make it look nice for the user, it is to make it look nice for everyone. pretty useless unless everyone installs it hehe

9:52 PM
/me test
IT DOESN'T WORK!!!
@rchern Why don't you make /me functionality which strips out /me on submission and puts the entire thing in italics?
2
So if I type
/me goes to the grocery store.
it comes out:
goes to the grocery store
you could even replace /me with their name
Chacha102 goes to the grocery store

@rcher just alias /me blah blah -> Aiden Bell blah blah blah

@rcher reads @archer....

o:

10:14 PM
Benoit Mandelbrot has passed away at the age of 85

wa wa waaaaa
How is it going all?

Pythatically
@MarkE I like the askers thinking lol

@AidenBell then you don't know c ;)

@MarkE I get the daftness. Just think it is ... sweet

10:23 PM
it is possible to get close to that, you can check if the text is "adder" and then say, map that to some function adder by doing int (*func)(int) adder = &adder;
er, something close to that, anyway
@AidenBell haha, sure
there's a host of PHP questions about variable variables
and I remember when I was new I used to think variable variables were awesome
then i discovered associative arrays
oh, how I love thee, associative arrays
:)

C+Stucts+function pointers+hashtable ~= OOP + horrid
Mind you, that's pretty much PHP underneath ;P

haha
I wish C had namespaces
I could care less about OOP
but namespaces would be great

@MarkE - C is perfect.

no more foo_doBar()

as is
shakes fist C is perfect

10:27 PM
@AidenBell so says you!

@AidenBell is today opposite today?

hm, i want something chocolatey, think it might be time to go to the store

Quote me ever saying C is anything but perfect
oh
I see

(;

@rchern - Why no it isn't, it is "don't wind me up day" :P
I think Python is nearly perfect

10:31 PM

Q: In C99, is f()+g() undefined or merely unspecified?

Pascal CuoqI used to think that in C99, even if the side-effects of functions f and g interfered, and although the expression f() + g() does not contain a sequence point, f and g would contain some, so the behavior would be unspecified: either f() would be called before g(), or g() before f(). I am no long...

SO has become a haven for specifying UB in C.

It is unspecified to make sure you are logical
keep you on your toes
perfect

it seems there's been a recent uptick in people writing code verifiers
which is clever, since it's impossible

@MarkE It's just impossible to write perfect code verifiers

@sepp2k it's impossible to write a perfect general code verifier

Right

10:40 PM
I can verify any code
well, non probabilistic code, depending on the variability

@AidenBell me too, just not correctly ;)
ah well, off to dinner -- we should discuss this another time

if all possible permutations of all possible inputs matches the expected output for that set, then it works
just try coming up with the datasets
@MarkE
later
lol
if only a program .... doh
@rchern - you about?

aye

Would I be right in assuming your JS guru-ness is fairly high?
(not jquery guruness)
lol

eh, i'm alright at it

10:45 PM
k, what would your general approach be to capturing all clicks on a page, anywhere, without the casual user noticing?

why, so you can show an alert saying ZOMG NO MOAR MOUSE ?

No, im working on a heat-map middleware for WSGI
mod_wsgi/Python

Ok lets see how I can improve my development environment..

you can capture mouse clicks, but that's not to say something else wouldn't prevent it from bubbling

Hmmm
Can I translate x,y coords to DOM elements?
generally

10:53 PM
@AidenBell The problem is that you can't even generally decide whether for one given input and output whether a given function will return that output for that function (I apologize if I'm telling you something you already know).

@sepp2k - all permutations also counts all permutations of state, even if the functions have side effects
also, it was a joke.

I was talking more about the case where the function simply does not return.

@rchern - Apologies, shall google. Just wanted to ensure I wasn't missing a trick

Your algorithm would be supposed to return false in that case, but if it actually tries to run the function, it will also never return.

@sepp2k - this isn't a discussion of theoretical CS ... because what I said misses the point. It was a joke

10:56 PM
no worries. my javascript is more on the intermediate level >_>

But yeah, joke, nvm

@rchern - wonders if a large transparent div clicked -> (x,y)=DOM element, trigger click would work
nm, got a better idea

11:23 PM
this place is awesome !
/me is very happy now
