Tim
12:01 AM
@NullUserException Why is that a termination reason? Seems kind of...trivial.

@Tim I have no clue.

Tim
@NullUserException Yeah, that's just....stupid. Had you been with the company for a while, or was it a fairly new job?

@Tim It was fairly new. My immediate managers did seem to like me but apparently this was against corporate policy. Someone from HR who I never met before told me this.

Tim
@NullUserException I guess you can take some solace in the fact that you didn't invest too much time there only to get burned by some other technicality...but still rough.

It was a nice place to work at; really. They take their security policies very seriously though. I used to blow off "mandatory" security training sessions and apparently this was mentioned at some point. I never thought it would be such a big deal. Oh well.

Tim
12:13 AM
What sort of development do you do, primarily?

@NullUserException What a stupid reason.

@Tim All kinds of stuff. My last project was on an internal tool

Tim
@NullUserException Ah, nice.
'Ello @AidenBell

@Tim, hello there
How are you sir?

Tim
Not too bad. A deadline is fast approaching, but I've been diligently ignoring that fact enough that it hasn't freaked me out yet, heh.
How about you?

12:25 AM
About the same, but I have been busting my chops! Which is why I am up at 1:25 trying to make deadway

Tim
I'm hung up on the fact that my database design differs greatly from what I had discussed in a previous meeting, and I don't want to argue over it, heh. But, right now I'm hungry..so time to go grab some food.

Tim
12:53 AM
decides to ignore JPA for now

1:16 AM
Writing Python script to write PHP for you == awesome.
That's how you do a project in PHP without touching PHP lol

@AidenBell I just wrote a PHP script to generate C code. Wrap your brain around that nonsense

@MichaelMrozek wow, and I thought I needed more sleep :P

Tim
Hahah

It encoded the information about what pixels make up each lowercase letter in the alphabet into an array

@MichaelMrozek id rather write a webapp in C than PHP ... maybe you could write a PHP script to generate the C code for a PHP script ..... oh hang on, facebook did some crap like that IIRC

1:19 AM
@AidenBell This is actually a desktop app, I just used PHP to figure out some information I didn't know how to get out of a library like ImageMagick

@MichaelMrozek neat, anything that generates C is generally cool

Tim
@MichaelMrozek The amount of tables on that page scares me.

@MichaelMrozek just look at the Bison output

@Tim There's only 26. There are 21632 cells though
In 9 attractive shades of grey

@MichaelMrozek - That beats mine ....
for i in range(1,52):
print "<option \"%d\" <?php if($cur_week==%d) echo 'selected=\"true\" ?>>%d</option>"%(i,i,i)
mine is just sheer lazyness
53

1:24 AM
@AidenBell Er. You know PHP has for loops too?

@MichaelMrozek im not running a for loop to count to 53 on every request just to generate a dropdown
too much overhead for something that never changes

@AidenBell You're worried about unrolling a 52-iteration loop, and you're programming in PHP. Something about this doesn't add up at all :)

Im a C programmer natively
I don't like dirty

Unrolled loops are dirty. They're potentially faster, at the expense of clean code

The code is just some markup and tests. If that block changes then the whole <select> will get wiped out of the template file anyway
@MichaelMrozek also ... you are mentioning clean code in respect to PHP embedded in HTML
lol
In a vanilla PHP file, it'd be a loop :P
@MichaelMrozek - if you are benchmarking the two I will be pissed off hehe

1:32 AM
@AidenBell No :)

hehe
Anyway, take my word for it. This is more maintainable unrolled.

2:04 AM
allo

Hello @rchern - how's you?

good, you?

Yea not too bad for coding at 3:06am

hehe

Tim
@AidenBell That's the best time to code...when sleep deprivation has killed off any will to resist that you had left. Heh, how's it coming?

2:10 AM
@Tim - Yep on that one. Fine as far as refactoring PHP templates goes
against a spec that shifts every day
My checklist is getting smaller tho

Tim
Yay uncertainty..! But, progress is progress.
Ah, nice.

How about you, what you up to?

Tim
...I don't know, heh.
At the moment I seem to be just sitting here, but I feel like a few minutes ago I was thinking about something specific that I was going to work on.

Get it done! Procrastination is for the meek
What's the smallest possible unit of work you could do right now ... do that
Make chat.SO entry tomorrow your reward

Tim
Hahahah :P
I need more minions to do the things that I don't want to do for me..

2:16 AM
lol
tell me about it!

Tim
Soon, soon, heh.

Im run ragged

Tim
Me too...I figure there has to be a light at the end of the tunnel somewhere. Or money for more developers..I'll take either.

same situation here
bloody startups!

Tim
I know, right?

2:18 AM
pppfffttt ... I tell ya

Tim
Being a CTO sounds nice, until you realize that it means that you do every job that you haven't gotten an employee for yet, followed by the additional realization that there's many such empty positions, heh. I'd raise a drink to the future, but all I have right now is soda for some reason...minor oversight.

Can sympathize there.
I wonder if there is a tool that will crawl a website and produce new CSS files (same filename as the old ones) but without the rules that aren't used or are overriden
These CSS files have been well refucktored

Tim
Hmm, sounds like sort of a complex operation due to the contextualized nature of CSS.

Just feed it a bunch of URLs and it would spit out firebug-style rule enumerations for all DOM elements and group them into file of origin.
Wouldn't be too bad lol
Could do it as a FF plugin

Tim
Well, that's true, hahah. Rainy-day project, eh? ;)

2:25 AM
I have too many of those as is ;) half finished

Tim
There has to be time one of these days..or at least I'm going to keep telling myself that.

Problem is, by the time you find it:
A) Internets did it
B) Technology moved on
C) You realize that language and compiler doesn't beat another language, or is flawed
C* the one you were inventing

Tim
But, very true, heh.

heh, (hates the RoR crowd)
sorry Tim :S

Tim
Hm? :P
I haven't even touched Ruby, heh.

2:31 AM
lol
RoR, Emacs, IE, Ubuntu, SO ... I could name many hates
;)

Tim
Hahah

@Shog9 ^
Thats not good

@AidenBell ...is not a moderator

I can do the rolling back, but they want ban hammer
@GeorgeStocker - I see he is unrolling your rollbacks :S

Tim
2:37 AM
They've been suspended now, it looks like.

I blinked and he was suspended. That was fast.

wtf

Tim
That kind of behaviour is quite annoying, heh.

lol

I'm just glad that behavior isn't pervasive on the internet.

2:38 AM
Hold on, are all those questions the same?

It's already annoying to not be able to find the answer to a problem I have with TFS; to have people write, "Oh, I had this problem but I fixed it. " is even worse.
@Aiden no

@shog9 looks like we have a rollback battle
lol

Oops...
I think they've all been taken care of now

Tim
Yep, seems so.

I think that's it now
@GeorgeStocker :)

Tim
2:43 AM
@AidenBell You broke the pattern! Heh.

@Tim - cool
I got a badge :D
lol

Tim
Hah, me too.

Still not got a gold one at 14k

Tim
You did ask the millionth question though.

not gold star worthy

Tim
2:50 AM
We all know how it went down though, heh.

grumbles

Tim
Which has to be at least equally relevant as some coloured dots on the screen. :P

Everyone in here is worth 1 billion gold dots -_-

Tim
You should just feature request that the Pundit badge be made gold, hahah. It's seemingly more exclusive than all but three of the non-tag gold badges anyway.
In other news, I finally remembered what I was going to work on, and have actually started to do so.

good stuff :D

3:03 AM
@Tim Whoa, I thought Pundit was gold.

Q: Why won't stack overflow allow me to Associate other accounts?

trusktr Possible Duplicate: Cannot associate meta.stackoverflow with other sites and inbox missing on meta I'm getting a message that says "user Id 4091 already associated with another account (click on this box to dismiss)" when i try to associate an account (it's my account).

Yinz all trust me too much.
I even posted a comment saying that I shouldn't have close-voted.

lmao
trigger happy

That... is actually a problem.

maybe you should have read first (:

all of them slaps wrists

@rchern In this instance, the problem wasn't "not reading."
I had two tabs open, and I meant to close the other one.
But I didn't realize which tab I was on.

Tim
3:05 AM
@PopularDemand Yeah, that confuses me. Although in light of how many upvotes some comments get on those poll questions...might have made sense in that context.

Still my fault, no question about that, but I did read.
What's the point of requiring five votes to close, though, if persons 2-5 are just going to rubber-stamp person 1?

Tim
@PopularDemand Doesn't really...explain everyone else either, heh.

@PopularDemand, well this is part of what i was talking about the other day with people and their close votes

@PopularDemand - Same thing must have happend to the 1m question ... rolls eyes
hehe

@rchern I don't remember that.
Meh. Given that I already effectively solved his problem, I'm just going to conveniently forget that this question exists.
Right, all I really wanted to do was make that point about close voting. See yinz.

3:14 AM
If you want to see a work in progress that displays its own source... posiverse.com/fosco

3:41 AM
Anyone a music equipment guru in here?

Tim
Not me, unfortunately.

My last request was for a watchmaker, that came up dry too ... where's the multi-talent lol

Tim
You might have a bit more luck with the music equipment request than the watchmaking, hahah.
Though it's far too quiet in here at the moment.

true
I wish I knew a watchmaker
@Tim , stupid question, but does mysql reuse auto_increment ids?
that might be an "im tired" question tho
I think it shouldn't
nm, no it doesn't ... thought so

Tim
No, it doesn't.

3:47 AM
I have an relational constraint
problem

Tim
Even if you delete all of the records, the table keeps a counter.

GUIDs FTW
Not my database tho

Tim
What kind of relational constraint problem?

Probably nothing; I deleted something from a table and a neighboring table joined in an odd way. Turns out that it is joining on something else.
A view

Tim
Ah ha

3:50 AM
I inherited a really dirty database that is:
a) Not normalized
b) Has tables and cols that are not even used by anything
c) Has mis-spellings everwhere

Tim
Sounds like fun.

Indian outsourcing for you
months late, unfinished and 99.9% crap
and dangerous
I don't recommend it (wasn't my decision in the first instance :P )

Tim
Yeah, I've seen far too many experiences like that, heh.

Who would downvote my answer:
1
A: Website for C debugging puzzles

Aiden BellTake any subversion, git or other repo on the net, which contains a project written in C Compile, run, break debug .... give back to the community. You will never run out of challenges Here are some: http://git.gnome.org/browse/ http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/next/linux-next.git;a=...

lol

Tim
I've always wondered why people think that outsourcing is a good idea...Clearly anyone who can produce quality work isn't going to stick around to get paid like crap so your company can save a few dollars, heh.
You probably got downvoted by someone who voted to close..

3:56 AM
Well, outsourcing is fine, but outsourcing with 0% quality assurance and taking delivery of 300k+ lines of too-awful-to-explain code

Tim
Ouch.

4:16 AM
ello' all! Eh.... crickets

Tim
'Ello @YiJiang

Ah, so not all quiet on the Tavern front

Tim
Indeed
That, or my bot-personality has taken over with stunning results..

4:39 AM
@Tim - nearly chat.SO time

Tim
Oh yeah, I had forgotten about that.

Tim
Not even a joke, heh.
I don't have much stake in that game. :P

4:51 AM
@AidenBell Really? I thought it should be a couple of hours from now

@YiJiang - A couple of hours isn't long
more like 3 or 4, maybe 5 6 or 7
Just start coding, it will fly by
plays some Mars Volta

Has anyone ever seen right aligned code? They look seriously weird
