Nice, another typo-related answer. :D

A: Not getting something with a regex

TimThe code which you were testing on Codepad has an additional asterisk after the lookbehind: return preg_replace('/(?!=\?|&|;)*' . preg_quote($name) . '=[^&;]/', '', $uri); // ^-- problem character Since there is nothing for the 0 or more repetition to be a...

(and earlier)

A: PHP not including connection info, what's wrong?

TimThe problem lies in your connection.php file, where there is a typo: $connnection_server = "[server]"; // ^-- third n Fixing that (along with the include() issue mentioned in Josh's answer) should resolve your problem.

This is proving to be far more rep-lucrative than mod_rewrite, heh.

2:25 AM
haha

3 hours later…
4:57 AM
@rchern that's clever!

o:

1 hour later…
5:59 AM
stay strong @rchern ! don't reveal the chat.stackoverflow.com password we have entrusted to you .. and only you!

i've tried so hard to forget it after you gave it to me...it is almost like i never even knew it

@rchern You managed to fool even yourself, but we're not so easily persuaded
2

eh, MSO remains The One Chat anyway.

@radp I am rather curious what will happen when the SO chat starts. I imagine we'll still mostly hang out here, and just use that for individual post rooms

Well, the launch will be interesting I guess?
anyway, chat wasn't hearth shattering on any SE site so far
even Gaming, who uses it most avidly, hardly has gained any new chat user recently

6:10 AM
yeah we're going to refocus on chat.stackexchange.com which will support global auth
that will be the "commons"
since, for most (smaller) sites, having a room is sufficient

eh, i'd go for at least 2. general + mod, but essentially the same

@Jeff you mean you're going to ask users to name their own site channel? :P

the private moderator rooms have been less useful than I imagined they would be. That's good though, it means that secrecy just isn't necessary most of the time
healthy IMO

ours has had...limited use. but when i'm not the only one in there it has been useful hehe

seriously @rchern if you reveal the chat.stackoverflow password we will be very upset with you

6:14 AM
>_<

like cancel your t-shirt upset!

ooohhhh
that's serious

yeah, that was too harsh. my apologies.

@rchern you have to understand, what if people got in and chatted?

(:
@radp, we certainly can't allow that.

6:15 AM
chat is a very different beast. but it serves the most avid users, which is fine by me
we no longer think all sites can support per-site chat though. chat users are rare enough that having them all in a commons is probably the only logical thing to do
with a definite exception for stack overflow

so existing per-site chats are getting pulled?

not necessarily but we don't support ghost towns

understandable

plus, the commons will be sufficient -- better, even. More cross-pollination

chat is one of those things that needs a critical mass

6:17 AM
i think most people just don't know about it

@rchern even after the very visible chat ads?

yeah
well, and ours also says the last activity was 6 days ago
which is a lie >_<

chat is just the tip of a very large iceberg

you must've been marked as a bot, @rchern...

@rchern is it a bug? tell Marc and Ben

6:19 AM
@JeffAtwood, really? you don't think i've mentioned it? (;

you are very shy and reticient, I have noticed that about you

@JeffAtwood As long as going to chat.unix.stackexchange.com/questions/whatever will work; I think that's going to end up being useful. It can redirect to chat.stackexchange.com, that part I don't really care about

lemme find the quote

@MichaelMrozek right .. er.. wait. per question chat? I don't think that'll be too useful

@JeffAtwood I do get that a lot...
9 hours ago, by balpha
Hmm they should -- I'll ping the core team about this, since it shouldn't be a chat issue

6:21 AM
not unless they're integrated with comments somehow anyway.

I'm not sure yet since there isn't chat on any of the sites I'm active on besides this one, but it was one of the features I was attached to when chat started

I can't believe I just typoed 'they're' and wrote 'their' instead.

@rchern we will build soon see if that fixes it

I suppose it's not exactly hard to make a room manually and paste a question link in it; there isn't much special about the auto-generated rooms

@MichaelMrozek I haven't seen too much per-question chat.. realize we spend all our time suppressing subjective discussion, so it's hard to justify tying a whole question to a chat
like nobody goes around asking "WHICH IS MORE BETTER, MAC OR WINDOWS?!?! LETS CHAT"

6:22 AM
chat can be the place for subjective discussion...

@JeffAtwood Do you know if Automattic is still strongly against WordPress Answers?

@JeffAtwood I do, but they ignore me. Maybe it's not as useful as I expected then

however our Game Recommendation room attempt utterly failed.

@ThomasMcDonald I don't know, they don't like the person who started the proposal for some reason.. some history

meh, even if you merged all sites' chats, I wouldn't complain. It would only underline the Gamers' superiority.

6:24 AM
@JeffAtwood Ah cool. I'll add it to checking for waffles' commit lol.

@JeffAtwood Ahh, I've been looking at ways of building some traffic to the site, so far it appears that some form of blog where the best answers are turned into general-purpose articles would be the best

@ThomasMcDonald also they want to own their own sites that support wordpress. It is weird, but I emailed Matt (I have met him in person) and he was just against it.

@JeffAtwood I've seen the mailing list discussion where one of the .org people pretty much just said get off our mailing list by the end of it

Yeah, that's a common complaint
"OMFG! TAKE OVAH! FRAGMENTATION! FORK!"

6:26 AM
> We haven't thrown any official support behind that proposal because it was started by a slightly controversial member of our community and the volunteers feel like it will fragment support. I think elements of the StackExchange interface are going to inspire the next revision of our support forums, though.
my response
> Now, I don't agree that the web fragments in general; I see it more as the pie only gets bigger -- and everyone wins. To me, the web isn't a zero sum game; one site does not need to "win" for another to "lose". That's why although we have a friendly rivalry with experts-exchange I doubt we'll really impact their traffic; they are reaching a different audience than us, and that's totally cool.

I can see where they're coming from, at the moment WP.org support is a bit of a mess and the proposal was just at the same time they were about to start work on a new version of the forums

@ThomasMcDonald the thing is, S* is not about support

we should reach out to any members of the community who are interested. we're not trying to "replace" anything, just be yet another thing that makes wordpress great

anybody on the internet can answer

"there can be only one site that makes wordpress great" is just crazy

6:28 AM
oh, @Jeff, the thing about the chat ads not reporting the activity right...it is fine on meta. more mysterious different behavior on sites
oh wait, i must've taken off my...what was it, shy...hat?
>_>

If you wanted a different support solution, you'd have proposed GetSatisfaction or something

I don't know how to fix that @ThomasMcDonald
certainly our wordpress site, like all our sites, was created out of joy and love for the topic.. no other reason even exists as far as I am concerned

Fair enough, I was just wondering if the discussion had only gone as far as what was said on wp-hackers

if we hated wordpress we sure as hell wouldn't be launching a site for it

Can we have an experts exchange QA site?

6:31 AM
too meta

@ThomasMcDonald if you can think of anything we can do to help, let us know.. email robert or me

Anyway, I'm hungry and my coffee has run out
makes a note to buy a coffee machine to fit on limited deskspace

@ThomasMcDonald what you can do is post the best Q/As on the WP Tavern or whatever that thing's called
at the twelveth post they should get the idea :D

*get angry :)

6:33 AM
the tavern isn't wp-hackers...
anyway I don't know what that place is really so...

coffee smells so gross, why would anyone want to drink something that smells so bad? ):

@JeffAtwood Yeah, I'll send Robert an email later
gotta go

@rchern if it isn't espresso it isn't coffee!

@rchern You could eh... just drink orange juice like me

hehe

6:36 AM
Scary...

ars <3

did you ask the one millionth question on Stack Oveflow??!? http://www.jsfiddle.net/yijiang/U9B9R/

@Dexter Awww....

nah, nah. who was it that posted the upside down faces? @balpha?

@JeffAtwood: Should have provided a warning.

6:37 AM
that was freaking freaky.

15 hours ago, by Yi Jiang
Do not click unless you want to be blinded for the next three days -> http://www.jsfiddle.net/yijiang/U9B9R/

@ThomasMcDonald well I emailed Matt M again pointing him to the ubuntu blog entry as an example

@radp: I totally missed that.

@Dexter the starred list is there for a reason. :) (@rchern too)

@radp, apparently it exists to star (: and oy ):
3

6:40 AM
and upside down bill clinton ;)

@rchern star for irony's sake I suppose

damn you!

@rchern that's why you should bug chacha to remove those stars :D

why bother? more ridiculous stuff will just get added lol

@rchern I wonder what happens if you remove a message that's being starred

6:42 AM
@YiJiang an unicorn cries
wait - that's actually something sort of good.

rchern stay strong sister! do not give in to their demands for the chat.stackoverflow password!!!!!!

@rchern I think Jeff's asking you to give it out :P

that's hard to do when i don't know it!

@radp He wants to skimp on the T-Shirt

@rchern then get guessing already!
it's probably the md5 of "rchern" or something

6:45 AM
i'll leave the guessing to y'all

could the password be "rchern"? THATS CRAZY

@radp I vote for rot13 of JeffAtwood

@Jeff I think someone said they tried that the other day

@JeffAtwood sounds like somebody would be tail -f'ing logs right now, if there was tail for windows :P

We should get this guy to try and guess. codinghorror.com/blog/2009/05/i-just-logged-in-as-you.html

6:46 AM
hehe

Actually don't you think they've set up something to watch for the password appearing in the chat then reset it to something else automatically?

> badp | 0 users active | 0 rooms active | faq | search
OMFG MUST GET IN!!!!11one
(not)

that's what we want you to think
it's like a rave up in there

(:

Actually I think the whole password thing is a scam, and that SO.chat simply watches for the correct approved user instead

6:49 AM
@Jeff, not like a rave. it is a rave

@YiJiang not sure, there actually was a correct answer for meta.SO
chatmeup and gossipville, namely (for the public betas)

Well there's always brute forcing that password...

better get started on that
might take awhile

just randomly try combinations of 'jquery', 'xml', 'regexp', 'chat'

6:55 AM
thecentercannothold is a bit long :)

@radp var random = ['jquery', 'xml', 'regex', 'chat']
 var chatpassword = 'usingregextoparse' + random[Math.floor(Math.random() * random.length) + 1];

import random
pool = ['jquery', 'xml', 'regex', 'chat']
next_combo = lambda: random.choice(pool) + random.choice(pool)

usingregextoparsechat FTW!!!
Hmmm.... let me try ajax for this

not as elegant, but without repetitions and with parameterized length:
import random
pool = ['jquery', 'xml', 'regex', 'chat']
next_combo = lambda: "".join(random.sample(pool, 2))

The only problem is that I need a good dictionary for this

6:59 AM
hey i have an idea
how about you just wait until it is public
q:

@rchern What? When will that be!? In six to eight weeks (wo)man! We can't wait that long!

@YiJiang About a day :P

they've said when
hehe

@rchern Geesh, should've told me. Still, might be fun to try
Like I said, anybody's got a good dictionary?

figured you knew, has been mentioned in here a bunch (:

7:01 AM
@YiJiang /usr/share/dict/words

import mechanizer
br = mechanizer.Browser()
br.open("chat.stackoverflow.com")
while True:
  br.select_form(nr = 1)
  next_password = next_combo()
  print next_password
  br["password"] = next_password
  br.submit()
go ahead, make your day. (It'll crash when it hits the right password or the proxy bans your ass :D -- in the former case, there'll be no password field, in the latter, there'll be no form.

@radp Nah, I'd rather try ajax for this

who said while True loops are forever??
brb, editing hosts file

$.post('beta-access', {
  'password': 'helloworld'
}, function(data){
    if($(data).find('#password').length){
      // Failure
      console.log('failure');
    } else {
      // ZOMG
    }
    console.log($(data));
});
Just set this to an setInterval, then wait ;)
Still needs a good way to choose the password from the dictionary though

i can't believe you're actually trying this.

7:09 AM
@rchern It's not that hard, except for the password picker
And I've got no life

i didn't say it was difficult.
anyways, nite

aww, my shenanigans didn't work.
@YiJiang you know, it's been written already
just port johntheripper to javascript!
besides if you need a large body of words, StackOverflow has an API just for you ;)

I let it run for about 200 requests
var possible = "ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZabcdefghijklmnopqrstuvwxyz0123456789";

setInterval(function(){
var length = Math.floor(Math.random()*12) + 6;
var password = '';

for(var i = 0; i < length; i++){
    password += possible.charAt(Math.floor(Math.random() * possible.length));
}

$.post('beta-access', {
  'password': password
}, function(data){
    if(!$(data).find('#password').length){
      console.log('Found it!: ' + password);
    }
});
}, 100);
I erm... don't want to get suspended

7:26 AM
@YiJiang you need a botnet, man.
by the way you didn't have to go nuclear, a basic dictionary attack would've been more effective.

@radp But a bit hard to code seeing that there really isn't anyway to import files in Javascript
And I'm not going to copy paste the entire dict/words file into the Firebug console

@YiJ I already said you could've imported the words from SO posts using the API if you really did need a large dictionary.

@radp Will need API key, if not will definitely exceed API limit
Woah!

A: What can we do to make Community Wiki better?

wafflesImportant Change - Status completed Users can not mark questions wiki anymore, across the network. I have an easy idea for a fix. Disable the option to mark questions community wiki by the question author. (allow them to become CW naturally if thats what GxD wants, or allow moderators to) ...

Quick! Post your last CW questions, before they get wiped out by the update!

It's already there, @YiJ
just edit it 10 times, I say!!

@radp Just checked.. erm.... nope

7:32 AM
@YiJiang I also just checked.

It's gone on MSO (2010.10.14.3); it's still on SO (2010.10.13.1)
MSO usually gets new revisions first

@MichaelMrozek Meta gets updated first... hmmm

@MichaelMrozek meta.gaming already has it

Well then, ladies and gentleman, I propose a minute of silence for the CW question.

Oh yeah, it looks like everyone does except SO, apparently it was in 2010.10.14.1. MSO is still a few revisions ahead of everyone else though
@YiJiang It's not really gone :). Just the ability for askers to start the question CW
Answers can still be CW, and questions can still become CW via mods or editing

7:36 AM
@MichaelMrozek Yeah, I said CW question. Technically speak dead. Sort of. Ah well...

Anyway, I meant to go to sleep ages ago. See you all tomorrow

what about MSO polls then?

@radp Well that would need 10 unique edits, and the system recognises only one every 5 min, so it'll take 50 min for this to work
@radp Also, code golf! I mean, having to bug mods every time somebody opens a golf is kind of stupid

@YiJiang it means people will need to go less apeshit about code golf voting!
or just ask those on reddit or something.
that officially puts an end to the wiki police, then.

@radp Now there will be five of them travelling in a pack, editing the question en mass to force it into wiki mode

7:48 AM
This is going to be FUN:
WikiPolice: "This question is subjective, you should make it CW"
Newbie: "How do I do that?"
WikiPolice: "You check the Community Wiki box"
Newbie: "Where?"
WikiPolice: "Under the question, stupid"
Newbie: "But there isn't one!"
WikiPolice: "Yes there is, look it's ... oh..."

They'll just resort to flagging I guess

well waffles is happy about this change, it was my brain-child
also ... be sure to read
2
A: How do I migrate questions? (the option to migrate questions is gone)

wafflesYes, we just changed the workflow: Step 1: Step 2: You see our dialog was not scaling to a ba-zillion close reasons. Migrated questions are always by-definition off-topic, so they get a new shiny area.

it doesn't have search, but I guess you can mark this completed then :)
18
Q: Adapt close dialog UI for upcoming avalanche of StackExchange 2.0 graduates

radpAs an attempt to partially address this issue, it is fair to consider that once migration paths open up to StackExchange 2.0 sites, the close dialog is going to get ugly as each site would get its option control and explanatory text: Here's what I was thinking about to improve the situation: ...

search = confusing
more than 6 options is a BAD idea

there are thirty SEs last I checked
what are you going to do to migrate corewars questions from SO to Gaming then? :)
how about wordpress questions?

7:57 AM
but only 6 valid migration paths out of any site

etc.

@radp, I was wondering the same thing

@radp Well, it's not that likely that someone posting on SO would like his question moved to cooking

more than 6 = too much thinking

@YiJiang, that's geek sniping :)

7:58 AM
just close offtopic

@waffles that's why I was suggesting searching by topic :)

give me a valid use case for search

I'm doing that by showing that 6 migration paths just aren't enough :/

0
Q: Div height not support

user475464Div height is not support in below code <html> <head> <meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html; charset=windows-1252"> <title>New Page 1</title> </head> <body> <style type="text/css"> .Footer{ background-color:red; width:673px; height:1px...

Too weird... just... too weird. It's like the percent math question

I mean, if you mods can migrate anything to anything else then I no longer have any complaint

8:00 AM
they are ... give me an example question that would hit 7

I can just flag those odd cases you didn't cover
SO → Meta, Game Dev, Theoretical Computer Science, Wordpress, SuperUser, ServerFault, TeX/LaTeX, User Interface, GIS, Stack Apps.

nope so will not allow for that many paths out ...

They're all plausible, however.
unlike SO → Cooking.

there will be no path where the topic is a subtopic ... so eg ... SO -> Game Dev will not be allowed

@radp Hey, that one's mine. Pick something else. Like SO → Bicycles

8:03 AM
I just don't think selecting paths can scale at all.

that just confuses stuff
SO -> tex also feels confusing

If it was a subtopic it should've been closed to begin with :)

meaning we will need to have a large number of consistent off topic questions to even consider adding a path
and we do not want to fracture the community

1.8k questions on SO about tex and latex...

@waffles, AFAIK, you opened Pandora's box by including webapps: there's no logical reason why other (current or future) SE sites shouldn't be added

8:04 AM
1.8k questions on SO about game development

seo questions on SO really never belonged
there are tons of them

1.1k

well this is a really good start... keep in mind we do not want closing questions to be a full time job

it is an improvement, agreed
I'm glad I didn't get closing rights while those close screens were up (not on the trilogy)

Well, who wants to update the list of changes now?

8:08 AM
back to the CW change, @waffles, shouldn't a direct consequence of the change be that questions that go CW by editing no longer force additional answers to be CW as well?
this may make things more complicated than necessary, however.

well not really ... mods have override powers
if needed
it should discourage asking soft-questions ... and help keep the sites more on topic

I know you can force a question into CW and devs can probably force a question out of it

eg. good bye polls
mods can not force them out ... only direct db access

nah, people will just flag and beg you to have CW questions instead :P

I hope not :)

8:13 AM
@waffles What about subjective sites that may have more polls than normal

its a site setting ... but honestly do we even want polls on programmers ?

@YiJ was also thinking about code golfs.
I guess they will go NARQ?

code golf is going to be interesting ... I wonder how it will shake down

I guess sites like Reddit would like to have those.
or, you can have those over chat...
not sure.

@radp, code golf on chat would be really sucky

8:18 AM
we will see, Im not sure what will happen, maybe the community will allow them as non-wiki ... who knows

@radp Chat would be horrible for those I think

There is a fourth subdomain in the making, I'd say
polls.stackoverflow.com

@YiJiang I can see it working honestly. "Code Golf of the Week"

no rep

@Benjol tsk, that's stackoverflow.com/polls/{id}/
and I'm not even kidding

8:19 AM
it was abuse of wiki I think, the only reason code-golf was wiki was due to it giving no rep

@waffles I think people were editing each others' answers when improving them

@waffles, well, it's not even clear WHY a question should be CW other than to put it in 'no rep' state?

hmm well they can still wiki answers

@Benjol Why wouldn't chat work for code golf anyway? The code is supposed to be short anyway.
There's also Gist oneboxing.

why does voting even make any sense with code golf... doesn't shortest always win ...

8:22 AM
@radp, well maybe with gist, but otherwise stuff just scrolls off the screen too fast

it feels like a bad fit for the site

@radp Because it's built on revisions, and having a single answer for each language that is getting constantly edited. In chat, everybody just talks over each other

you can't comment underneath the code you're commenting on

And it'll get messy very soon if too many try to participate

@YiJiang that's what the fork button is for (yes, you can fork gists)
With a git client you should even be able to merge changes back in

8:24 AM
@radp Well, that would mean maintaining some sort of Git repository (correct word?), which some people may dislike

@YiJ gist already does that for you

@radp, it would be horrible ugly, no-one would have the patience, code-golf would die. That may be the aim

see git://gist.github.com/614745.git, git repo behind this gist

@radp #thingadongdong? :)

@YiJiang yeah, I was tired of dangling commas not making rules apply
as in selector1, selector2, selector3, { /* ... */}
which makes the rule only apply to some selectors or none at all... on Chrome.

9:24 AM
Photography at 90 days, still no design proposal...

@Benjol same for game dev, if it makes you less sad

@radp, not sad, just curious
I'm not a member of either

Cooking should be out by now, but I think because of Ubuntu they pushed back the others

well webmasters just came out
I guess Jin's having a hard time keeping up!

@Benjol The design for Webmasters it ... bad
Jin removed the pattern from the original designs he posted on meta

9:28 AM
in other news, Opera 11 comes with extensions.

@YiJiang, yeah, kind of bland and boring like a ...
no I didn't say that
It does look a bit like a domain name holder page

Jin
i intended webmasters to be simple, more like SO's since it's mostly for techies.

Hi @Jin, I'm really looking forward to seeing how cooking is going to turn out. And yes, I think most of the actual users on webmasters don't seem to be particularly bothered.

Jin
@Benjol will be out very soon. a lot of lil css stuff to take care of.

9:39 AM
@Jin, if I must confess all, I lurk on the metas of sites I'm not even involved in, just to see what the new designs are going to be like :)

@Benjol So do I
And when they go live, I actually go and sign up and whine loudly about the new designs :)

Go to site > click on users > search Jin > see if he's asked 'the' question yet :)
@YiJiang, I haven't gone that far yet :) I'm doing it here instead

gah, my cat's sitting on my laps
she's warm, so now my feet are cold.

@radp I've got mosquitoes flying around my leg, biting me, so count yourself lucky

@YiJiang summer's coming over there? :)

9:50 AM
@radp Singapore's on the equator, it's always 25 ~ 33 C here

nice!
maybe monsoons aren't as nice...

@radp There really isn't monsoon here (too close to the equator)

where's the catch then?

Well, the humidity can reach 90%, and you don't really want to go out in the sun anywhere between 10am - 4pm
It's very hot. Not desert hot, but wet and sticky hot
Oh, and the mosquitoes of course

Jin
ha appreciate all your critiques. i've been pretty swamped lately so i haven't been able to fix things as fast

9:53 AM
365 d/year of them may be a good enough catch

Jin
the ubuntu launch last week threw me off schedule. game dev 'n photos will be next.

the last ones are dying now

@radp They fumigate the estate every week
But they've been slacking off now
Haven't seen them for two weeks

Jin
this site has the coolest favicon ever rag.nu

10:09 AM
@Jin, all our criticisms are from the safe distance of knowing we'd be incapable of doing any better (well, I speak for myself anyway)

Jin
@Benjol and it's appreciated. the designs for SE sites are the same way how SO works. it's not a fixed thing, and should always be improving. i normally don't strife for perfection when the site is first launched.

10:34 AM

Q: The fourth place: Polling, Recommendations and subjective-ish stuff

Tobias KienzlerPolls are (or at least according to the faq should be) closed as subjective and argumentative. Some of them are however interesting, but I understand why they shouldn't be around on the main sites. So, what about just adding polling.sitename as a fourth place to migrate polls to - kind of a play...

Hmm, a whole site for subjective matters?
We have a community wiki category for that.

subjective matters are on topic on SEs now I thought

@spoulson Not anymore, we don't.

Too bad Markdown isn't carried over in chat. That first line is actually extra-bold.
#Important change: [you know the rest]
