Q: Can't amend a suggested edit from within a review queue

michaelb958Seven simple steps to screen-smashing rage: Log in to a site where 500 <= rep < 2000. Wait for a First Post or Late Answer review task to appear. Decide the post in question needs an edit. Click edit, and prepare and submit the edit from within the review queue. Realise you missed something and...

Fun fact: On Skeptics, the "add comment" and "show 6-8 more comments" links are initial-caps ("Add Comment" and "Show 6-8 More Comments" respectively).

6:47 AM
@michaelb958 Oh really. I'm skeptical. Let's see...

@michaelb958 true, and the "Add Comment" button is shouting at us
"OK, I will add the comment, don't shout at me please!"
@JanDvorak Why flag?? Just because the word crap in title? Just edit. :)

@ShadowWizard not just. It feels more like a rant to me.
I don't think there's enough information to answer. Also, it seems too broad as a question.

@JanDvorak well, he got a real problem which seems to be on topic there, best leave it to the site's users to handle. :)
I would also suggest an edit, but there's so much to fix...

I'll be watching the question, then.

@JanDvorak yup, that's not a bad idea.
Hi @rene!

Hi @ShadowWizard

Time for the train? Let's see...
Morning!

Morning!

Morning?

Baba wrecked the train :(

not really. I consider TCPMAN's comment the train engine

Nah, "!" and "?" are both fine. It can also be Morning?? or Morning!?! and the train will still go.

@rene no, it kills the fat person. Problem solved. :-P

hehehe

Why you removed your previous message. @rene?

Ok, thanks!

@rene you got a mod attention! ;)

Yes, I saw... now the OP posted his code...it is somewhat better...maybe it gets reopened but not by me.

I had a close vote on this one but I fumbled it and retracted the fumble.

I've tried but I'm done with this as well: stackoverflow.com/questions/23404317/mails-not-retrieving
I did cast a cv myself this time :-)

I cv-ed too broad..
Grrrr...someone answered that...

@rene I've voted to close as too broad. I'm not getting a strong request for off-site resources from that question. There's a mention that he'd appreciate "useful documents" but this could be easily edited out, and the question would remain too broad.

OK, I'm fine with that, tnx

The question I mentioned earlier for close votes has been modified by the OP to ask an additional different question. I've rolled back and left a comment about not asking two questions in one. (The original question was an issue with recursion. The added question is about what is and is not a keyword in JS. That the same body of code is used for the 2 questions does not make it one question.) The OP rolled back my rollback. I'd rather not engage in an edit war. Suggestions?

Brown.
That is all.

@jadarnel27 Thanks. I figure the mods are busy enough and there is no pearl to save in this case. (An OP defacing a good question would be a different matter.)

@Louis that's a very well-reasoned response.
@Oded Most definitely.
Hey, @Louis. What's with the CW answer on that question?

@jadarnel27 It is a crap question. There's an opinion that crap questions should not be answered. If this had been a complex crap question where I thought it is unlikely that anyone would be able to provide a precise answer to the question, I'd have left it unanswered and moved on. But it is not the case, this question is extremely simple. I figured if I did not answer something then someone else would answer this unworthy question and derive rep from it. So I put in a CW answer.
No one is going to get >=15 rep from answering this crap question. Also, I figured it would help close voters immediately see that the question was one of those "can no longer reproduce or typo... not useful to others..." questions.

Ah, right on. That makes sense.
Speaking of close voting...

12:25 PM
Ah dammit. The six to eight weeks website no longer exists

@Bart there was a website for this?! Anyway first Google result is of course meta.stackexchange.com/questions/19478/the-many-memes-of-meta

link-only answer at best
looks like spam to me
let me try to flag the answer as spam

Don't think spam, he would have posted it earlier in such case
More likely he found it, used it, and now sharing
Question itself should be closed anyway so it's not really relevant.

I can't even understand the question

Easy: he want user to give URL of RSS feed and his email, and some magic code will send the RSS feed to his email.

I can easily imagine a spammer delaying his self-answer with the intention to look legit

1:38 PM
@JanDvorak Me too

no other suspicious visible activity, but he's got an account on SU
last seen 14 mins ago. Is that a global property?
last seen 15 minutes ago on SU with no visible activity. Screams "deleted content" to me.

@JanDvorak no, last seen is per site

@JanDvorak Doesn't look like it. I just checked some of your accounts, and they are different days for different sites

@JanDvorak not really, he might just browse the site without posting, 99.999% of the users are doing it anyway

@ShadowWizard does that count as last seen?
makes sense

1:43 PM
@JanDvorak sure, there's no "last activity" date
There actually used to be "last active" field in the user profile, private to the user (and mods) but looks like they nuked it at some point.

@ShadowWizard sixtoeightweeks.com

@Bart so sad!
To cheer you all up, here is a nostalgic picture I just found

It had sliders for project parameters, after which the time planning was ... well ...

That was a trivial, silly, but fun game!

yay

@Bart how did you manage to slide this between my lines??!! ;-D
@Bart easy to replicate such a site, I can do it on jsfiddle

2:26 PM
I was planning to send it to the company producing a 3rd party lib we're using. Their updates should have taken 2 weeks, we're 2 months on now ... their ETA was last Friday ... end of April at the most ... during their last contact ... It's May.

@Bart you're talking about Stack Exchange, right? ;)

Hehe, nope

Anyway, this is the latest crawl I could find, is this what you remember?

That doesn't show me anything :s

@ShadowWizard booo... no js magic

2:30 PM
Ah, but indeed "How many programmers? How large is the project? How many soft drink machines do you have inhouse?"

Try now, link fixed

"Hrm. Wayback Machine doesn't have that page archived."

So weird!
So screenshot will do, it's a dead page anyway. sec

\o

@Braiam of course, that's the old page. I plan to write something in jsfiddle that actually won't have too much JS.
Now with mockup at hand, it should be easy enough. :D

2:36 PM
@ShadowWizard Yep, that's it. It had some sliders to enter values.

@Bart ohh, sliders!

Too bad they weren't archived for some reason

I remember seeing it before..

@3ventic how could it be asked? The lock happened today

Q: What can a user do if moderators remove a point of view from questions and answers

refuses to learn indeed, posting mistakenly on the wrong meta twice..

You guys are sooo rude to new users. That's why they all leave. No wait, that's why they all come and drive the high rep users away.... no wait .... anyway. PANIC!!!

@3ventic nah, the first one was actually general question, he didn't even link to that question on Skeptics. But still...

Well, true. But it's still a matter he should deal with on skeptics first.

2:47 PM
@3ventic he's most likely not aware about the per site meta.

He should be now.

Also from quick look in his profile there, he just doesn't grasp the concept of Skeptics.

...but it's linked from the lock notice ._.

@Bart hopefully! :)

2:49 PM
@3ventic close notice you mean, and you really think anyone is reading this except us, who just want to find bugs in there? :D
Oh
Well, nobody's is reading this either

I read them when I didn't know what they said
now I know what they say so it's kind of pointless to read them..

anyone remembers the conversation about adding the editor tag to all vim/emacs questions?

On what site? SO?

yeah

Not really..

2:56 PM
@Braiam I do...
@Braiam This is the result of that stackoverflow.com/questions/235839/…

@Shog9 if a question is about an specific editor should I add a broader, high-level tag too, like text-editor?

I would say no....
/me waits for the verdict

@Braiam why?

@Shog9 I don't know? I was discussing this in UL

Argh. He was discussing it with me. This is about a question on U&L that asked "How does vim know how to syntax highlight a file?".

3:13 PM
@Braiam well, that's not the same scenario you asked about, given the tag was already on there.

It was tagged as and and @Braiam removed the latter. My point was that since 1) vim is an editor, the applies and should therefore not be removed (not talking about adding it) and 2) All editors use the same basic approach (guess file type, find appropriate syntax file, apply it) therefore the editors tag applies even more.

I don't think "editors" is a particularly useful tag in this context, but you might want to raise a question on meta asking what [editors] should be used for. The tag wiki doesn't really say.

@Shog9 True. My reasoning is that general tags are almost always more useful than specific ones and as long as the general applies, there seems to be no point in removing it.,
Braiam is a fan of minimalist tagging, I like to have as many tags as I can fit as long as they're all applicable, You never know what someone will be searching.

may I add that vim is a "text editor" not just an editor, since editor may imply images, video, multimedia, et all

@terdon up to a point. I mean, y'all don't tag every question with [unix], because it's just assumed - it's so broad as to cover nearly everything. Somewhere between that and, I donno, the asker's place of business, there's a sweet spot where tags are actually useful.

3:16 PM
@Shog9 Exactly. Bt as a general rule, broad tags are useful and should not be removed. Do you disagree?

@Braiam well, the tag wiki does make it clear that we're talking about text editors and not something else.

Also, @Braiam check the tag's wiki: it's about text editors.

@Shog9 @terdon who reads tag wiki? :/

@Braiam excerpt then
@terdon as a rule of thumb, I would say a tag should be something you might find a book about, or at least a section in a book. Not a library, and not "chapter 3, page 10, paragraph 6".

@Shog9 since we're bugging you, can you clarify the Right Way® of tagging with respect to broad tags? My understanding based on help pages and SE faqs is that 1) we should tag from the general to the specific 2) we should always try to include at least one broad tag and 3) We should always try and use up all 5 tags as long as 5 tags are relevant.

3:20 PM
4) try to avert redundant tags

@Braiam That's the one I disagree with.

I like how simple tagging on Arqade is..

@terdon From a practical standpoint on a SE site, you want the first page of /tags to cover the majority of your scope. If the first line of /tags covers every question on the site then your tags are probably too broad (cue argument about version tags); if it takes 10 pages to hit the majority of questions, you're probably missing some broad tags (cue argument over Gaming/SciFi/Movies/etc.)
@3ventic yeah, Arqade has no broad tags ;-)

Sounds reasonable. Do you have anything against redundant tags?

@terdon meaning?

3:22 PM
Well there's technical-issues, but that's about it

If tags mean the same thing then they should be synonyms
if one tag is a subset of another, but neither is too broad, then using both is fine
2

@Shog9 Meaning, for example tagging a question as both and .
@Shog9 Exactly my point, OK.
@Braiam seems to think that redundant tags are bad by definition. So, if X is a Y, I should not tag as Y but only as X because X implies Y.

@terdon as long as [shell] means "the use of interactive shells and shell scripting", we're good.
If it's something more narrow than that, there are conceivably scenarios where bash applies and shell does not - IOW, it's no longer a strict superset

It includes that yeah, the idea is that bash is a shell but both tags apply despite bash implying shell.

This is why the fact that there are no clear usage guidelines for [editors] bugs me: I see folks using it for specific questions on the use of specific editors, and for things like editor recommendations, editor design, etc.

3:26 PM
@Shog9 I admit that is not the most useful of tags. However, on Unix & Linux 90% of "editors" boil down to vim or emacs.

@terdon which suggests that [vim] and [emacs] are probably better tags, unless there exists a class of questions where both would apply and also other editors

^ THIS!

A classic example from SO is [language-agnostic], which is actually a standin for "all language tags go here"

@Shog9 The one we are discussing would be an example of that. While my answer is about the details pertaining to vim, the main ideas (that editors guess file type and load an appropriate style definition) aply across the board.

@terdon btw, vim and emacs are already far more popular than editors, why keeping it if it doesn't add value?

3:29 PM
@Braiam Different issue. I would not necessarily be against removing it from the site. I am against removing broad tags in favor of more specific ones.

There's also a [programming-languages] tag, but you would not normally combine this with, say, [c#] or [java] etc. - it's literally about the topic of programming languages, not a superset that covers all of them.
So you see my confusion with [editors], because it seems to be trying to play both roles
does it mean, "this question is about the topic of editors"? Or does it mean, "this question is about text editing, in any editor"?

@terdon I'm not against a broad tag, I'm against tags that doesn't add value

@Shog9 Yeah, it's not the best example. My main issue here is the general use of broad tags and you answered that clearly.

Broad is fine; unclear is not.

@Shog9 I'd go for the former but it could use some clarification.

3:31 PM
@terdon yeah; I'll leave y'all to work that out. A short meta discussion + wiki edit should do it.

Right, thanks for the help @Shog9.

@terdon you write it or I do?

ah :D

Some high up person at the company is very upset about the password complexity / history / change requirements.

Specifically that you can't reuse recently-used passwords. And you have to reset every X days.

Which is pretty standard practice (not to say it's the best practice).
@Undo Who does? =)
And I'm only on the receiving end of this rant because I support the tool that people use to reset their passwords.

ha
fun

Yeah! Fun =P

@ShadowWizard thanks :)

I don't have any control over the policies.
Nor do I have any influence. Because the security ops team hates the security apps team and thinks we're useless.

@AnnaLear's profile pic is getting scarier and scarier.

Q: Why didn't my tag wiki edit appear?

verI posted a question regarding the game Wayward. Since there was no tag for it, I added one and then wrote a tag wiki entry. It was approved (I still see the reputation gain from the accepted edit), but the tag wiki is still empty. See here. When I browse history, I see my edit there: http://gami...

That's odd ^

I initially put a VTC as not-enough info for diagnosis, but since then the OP put his comment, etc.

Q: Change Chrome homepage by time of day

MosesIn the morning, I always start my day by opening up Chrome and checking my email, but somehow I always forget to clock in in our web based timeclock. I don't use any desktop calendar solutions and I'd prefer not to, so a calendar reminder is out. Rather, I'd like to have my homepage be the web ...

I actually kinda want something like this

@TGMClans. I'm hardly going to paste that whole slew of code into here when it's available on that useful page. This is exactly what the OP wishes to do, and that guide makes it crystal clear. I'm not going to repeat that information here. — Andrew Fielden 49 secs ago

@TGMCians I have found that it's helpful to link to meta when leaving comments like that.
To avoid...such negative responses.
That way they know it's not just your opinion, but somewhat of a rule.
And they know the rationale.
