@balpha, you clearly need to improve the chat's URL-detecting skills. My last message was a perfectly valid address.

well actually, you could've just said xn--55gaaaaaa281gfaqg86dja792anqa.ws -- hopefully we're all fluent in important encodings, right?

Oh, man. There is no shortage of "how to identify URL with regex" questions on SO.

I'm pretty sure SEI could spin off a regex.SE and it would rival SO in terms of traffic every month ...
of course, half the questions would be on SO and half on Regex.SE, not exactly double the bandwidth

How do you clean a dry-erase board that hasn't been cleaned in months? The standard "wipe it with a tissue/paper towel/eraser" method isn't doing the trick.

Abrasive blasting is the operation of forcibly propelling a stream of abrasive material against a surface under high pressure to smooth a rough surface, roughen a smooth surface, shape a surface, or remove surface contaminants. The first abrasive blasting process was patented by Benjamin Chew Tilghman on October 18, 1870. There are several variants of the process, such as bead blasting, sandblasting, and sodablasting. Operations Abrasive blasting is a method of propelling abrasive using a pressurized fluid (typically air) or centrifugal wheel. Common nomenclature for abrasive blas...

gotta have the solution
I seem to have lost mine to the trashcan in the near past
but does rewriting and erasing not do it? normally that works for me
takes a couple tries on problem areas

@balpha My thoughts exactly. When normal physical force isn't working, it's time to take it to the next level.

@balpha My definition of "clean" involves the whiteboard still being in one piece after cleaning.
But thank you for playing.

@PopularDemand not my fault that you didn't spec out your objective more carefully

@PopularDemand kill it with fire

@drachenstern I've never tried that, I hate it when the tips absorb other colors, and I don't have the original marker anymore... good idea though, I'll call that plan B.

8:15 PM
@PopularDemand Get a bunch of acetone or rubbing alcohol. It'll take it right off

@ircmaxell Will I still be able to write on and erase the board afterwards?

rubbing alcohol is the standard cleaner sold in stores for the dry erase

isopropyl tends to work better in my experience than ethanol
but this is like a sample size of 3 here

@ircmaxell Really? It didn't have much effect when I tried it. But I was asking about the acetone; wouldn't want it to take the smooth coating off, too.
@drachenstern Using ethanol is alcohol abuse.

eih
@PopularDemand I've used it without problem... Just take a paper towel (not a tissue) to get a little bit of abrasive action without being harder than the surface

8:20 PM
@ircmaxell Good to know. I don't have acetone at work, but I'll give it a shot later.
Thanks all.

@PopularDemand "I AM Scott Hanselman and I'm impressed this took 10 seconds to close. LOL. Sorry @tugberk. ;) I appreciate your enthusiasm, though." – Scott Hanselman 6 mins ago

try it on a corner, I take no responsibility
woot, I'm copying data locally at nearly 4gb per minute

8:43 PM
@ircmaxell Nice, wanna share your specs while you wai - oh, look, all done.

it's done
but now I'm rsyncing 212gb of data, so that's going to take a few minutes

the HDD specs are 12 x 300gb SAS drives Raid 10 connected via FibreChannel directly to the server

@drachenstern None of those Qs are questions!

It allows us to be more efficient. We can learn what information is important to our visitors, and what isn't. We can discard Web pages you don't use, and focus our efforts on information you need.

Anyone here ever dealt with a UISplitViewController? whistles

@Moshe Is that a View? or a Controller? Or Neither?

@ircmaxell It's a view controller that manages a master/detail view on the iPad.
It looks like I was looking for free functionality that I have to code myself. Meh.

@Moshe what's a view controller? Is Apple making up design patterns again?

@ircmaxell Lol. It's a controller that controls the view onscreen, responds to input and gives data to the views from the model.
It's the C in MVC.

but that's not the job of a controller in MVC...

8:51 PM
@ircmaxell So how would you describe a controller then? Perhaps I'm mistaken.

isn't going to get into it. I just can't stand the bastardization of patterns and their naming. Want to use a different spin on a pattern? GREAT! Name it differently! The benefit to patters is it gives us a common language to speak with. If there are 400 different takes and spins on MVC, how can we understand what each other means when we say "it uses MVC". Seriously. </rant>

Microsoft likes MVVM. Apple likes MVVC. What's so hard about that?

@ircmaxell Hehe, gotcha.
@mmyers MVVM?
ducks

@mmyers I have absolutely no problem with that. Just call it what it is, and don't use a name just because it's popular if that's not what you're doing...

Folks, what do you do about a review like this:
> I bought it and it crashes whenever I attempt to open it... FIX IT OR REFUND

8:54 PM
@Moshe Make it not crash anymore?

No description of the device, what occurs. Just a one star rating and goodbye.

@Moshe Tell him to switch to Android where he can return after purchase

If you can't reproduce it just ignore him

I can't repro.

@Moshe Model-View-ViewModel.

8:55 PM
@mmyers Got that, but no clue what that means. (not asking either)
Actually, I suspect that review isn't genuine, but whatever.

> the ViewModel is a “Model of the View” meaning it is an abstraction of the View that also serves in data binding between the View and the Model. It could be seen as a specialized aspect of what would be a Controller (in the MVC pattern) that acts as a data binder/converter that changes Model information into View information and passes commands from the View into the Model.

In case anyone thought I couldn't work on another project, I'm trying to finish up this bug reporter utility. This wacko singleton comment has spurred me to make a "Feedback" app for my other apps.
Actually, perhaps I can take it a step further... but not now.
Okay - if anyone knows about free functionality and the UISplitViewController, gimme a ping.
@ping
gotta love the first comment.

thinks rsync is lying to him
I just got 245mB/s. across a VPN linking a 20mbps connection with a 12mbps connection
