12:23 AM
hello all

1:09 AM
Allo

Anyone know when the week starts for the network? Sunday morning or Monday morning?

I'm pretty sure it's sunday midnight

If I hover over the "week" button on the voters per week page it says from "2011-05-08 to today"

I see you didn't call me out on my sassy non-answer

Q: Voters for week only shows one user

xiaohouzi79Today after being inspired by the blog post to further increase my voting, I went out and voted some more. Looking at my profile page on skeptics it says I have 4 for the week and 0 for today. If I go to the users voters link for the week it only shows one user.

I still think there is a problem with this
On the skeptics site there is only one user on the "for the week" page

1:14 AM
aren't those values heavily cached?

But this person has 0 votes for today if you click through
That's what I was wondering, how long it is cached, I did some extra votes 20 minutes ago and they still haven't show up
Even if it is cached, if the week started today and that guy has 0 votes for today, why is he the only person on the list

oh good lord, 20 minutes isn't long enough
heavily cached is like 4 hours or more

I did some voting after him and my first 4 votes showed up, but he is still showing as 0
He has 0 for the day, but 11 for the week
I'm also surprised there is only 1 person on that list

I don't see a zero user on the user pages on the skeptics.SE site /users proper
who do you see?
what page are you looking at? link me

It has Kit Sunde with 11 votes
Clicking thru to his profile it has "Week 11" "Day 0"

1:18 AM
Where was that on his profile?
I mean, I don't see "Week 11" "Day 0"

Scroll down to "Votes cast"

where do you see that?

It is separated into Month/Week/Day

ooooh
That would be because UTC already kicked over to Monday
so today he has nothing, on Monday
you only voted SINCE midnight UTC
so you don't show up on the leagues (if they are heavily cached)

That's fine, but it still doesn't explain the inconsistency with Kit

1:21 AM
that's what I'm reading, but I don't know all the details, and I'm not going to go in that direction, I'm trying to track someone down
what inconsistency?

If I look at Oliver_C another user: skeptics.stackexchange.com/users/454/oliver-c
He has 7 for the week, so shouldn't he also show up on that page?

I see him having 11 votes and 11 votes

Are u seeing 11 for day?

No
I see 11 for week

I see what u mean now
But for Oliver C, he has 7 for the week, but doesn't show up in the week page

1:22 AM
but I don't know why Oliver doesn't show up on that league

7 being > than the 5 quoted

I also see that that appears to be a new page, so it could be buggy still
or at least, a new addition to the page

yep, new feature, that's understandable

wow, I've only cast 39 downvotes on SO?

I think I'll log another Q on meta to see if they can shed some light
thanks for the input

2:08 AM
Just want to add this info for anyone who has read the dialogue above, it appears that the number of votes needs to be > 10 to appear on the voters leagues
Although I don't have any official quote to back that up. On all of the sites I have checked the minimum appears to be 11 votes.

Oh /facepalm that's right
Yes, leagues don't count for less than ten votes, I think we can find a reference for that on MSO

I got the number 5 from the meta question

5 doesn't sound right, ten does

I spend enough time on sites (including meta) to know that
I was just surprised that it was only 1 user
Anywayz, at least I got to the bottom of it

yeah, but it's sunday so ...

2:11 AM
yep

2:26 AM
@drachenstern - yay me. A gradient or two can go a long way.
points up
@drach does that work?

A: Voters for week only shows one user

Rebecca ChernoffThere is a cut-off before users show on these pages. For the voters tab, it is 10 votes. For the edits tab, it is 5 edits.

Thanks for the update Rebecca!

I was right for the editors tab!

3:10 AM
@Moshe points up, that'll do @Moshe ... that'll do

3:43 AM
Last one. points up again

You forgot [Insert Coin]

Meh. @moot it's an iOS splash screen. Those go away after a half second.
@moot you'd have fun in the gaming chat room. Some Nippon-cynics there too.
You could mock it together in harmony.
:p
Night.

Mona Rifaatstring sqlUpdate1 = "UPDATE PatientTumorLocation SET TumorXLocation ='" + X + "' WHERE ID ='" + anInteger + "'"; OleDbCommand mySqlcmd2 = new OleDbCommand(sqlUpdate1, AdminLogin.con); mySqlcmd2.ExecuteNonQuery(); I have error in this update query 'Data Type Mismatch In Criteria expression'

I'm a bit wary of going to get any sort of imaging done now.

Jin
so i just implemented a 2yr old featured request...

I saw that :P

Jin
and i'd /wrist if i hear a eeeekk post about it..

So I should ... write an eeeek post about it? :p

5:05 AM
@Jin I would be pretty shocked if that happened.

nah, I don't have enough time for moar baconz if I do that
ok, time for me to go find my pillow and pretend to play possum

G'night

5:48 AM
It's 34 degrees outside right now and I have to go out to get lunch
It hasn't rained for 3 days, and I think I might get sunburned just going out

6:50 AM
@Jin I'll forgive you. Eventually. With time. And lazers.

Jin
@badpssockpuppet i'm relieved.

(It doesn't look right yet, the X's need to lose their background circle perhaps. Otherwise, it's much tidier now.)

YOU
Unintentionally got new Vox Populi badge by testing this question

Jin
@badpssockpuppet i'll fix it, 2years from now.

7:44 AM
@Jin what was the feature request?
Ah, I see.
Eeeek! I was so used to the x outside the tag

Jin
@Pekkasothertrollingaccount yeah i had to do it for all SE sites too, not just the trilogy

I demand it be restored immediately, with the X turned green please. I'll be boycotting the network until this is done.
Seriously though, looks good!

Jin
thx! it's long overdue...
man this is soooo cruel dennys.com/en/baconalia/BaconCam

yuck
Are there any other forthcoming changes to SO itself in the works?

Jin
@Pekkasothertrollingaccount design-wise not yet. but there could be new features.

7:49 AM
@Jin right!

Re-posting
May 6 at 7:44, by Pekka's other trolling account
Does anybody happen to know a simple introduction to taxation for employees in the US, namely California? I need to get an understanding how much will be left if a job ad promises a salary of $xx,xxx per year (approximately, of course)
May 6 at 7:48, by Pekka's other trolling account
And on a similar note, an introduction to finding housing (is rent usually inclusive or exclusive of which utilities, what is the average size of the deposit, what is the default notice period etc.)

@jin that link requires Flash so I can't see it now.
@Pekka wish I could help you with those questions. I'll point out that it also varies by state. If you are living in california, it's going to be different than say, New Mexico or Arizona.

@Moshe Well, the URL says 'baconcam', so what else do you need to know? :P

@YiJiang I can't see that part ofthe URL. It's too long for my Retina display.
@Pekka try this for size: irs.gov/faqs/index.html

@Moshe yeah, I imagine! But thanks for the link, that is going to help me.

1:21 PM
@Pekkasothertrollingaccount Your mistake is thinking that there's a simple introduction to American tax systems. :P
@Pekkasothertrollingaccount In my experience, the inclusion or exclusion of utilities varies widely. I have no idea about California, but it's likely that rent will not include most utilities, but might include say water, depending on what kind of residence it is. The deposit on my last apartment was equal to one month's rent, and I also had to give the last month's rent up front. This is semi-common, I think. As far as notice period, you mean for moving out? That varies and is sometimes enforced by state law,
but typically is like 30 days.

Q: Community Promotion Ads - 1H 2011

Geoff DalgasWhat in the Wide, Wide World of Sports is Going On Here? TL;DR -- put images and links in the answers. If they get voted up enough, they will appear on the main site as community promotion ads. But whyyyyyyy? This is a method for the community to control what gets promoted to visitors on the s...

@drachenstern Looks interesting, thanks!

@Pekkasothertrollingaccount it helped me find this apartment that I'm in.

@TimStone thanks! That is a good start, I guess I'll simply have to play close attention to what is included and what isn't, and inquire if it isn't clear. 30 days is much less than the German standard (3 months), good to know
@drachenstern where does it get its data from?
Ahhh I see
It's an aggregator
Very nice!

aye
also, I looked up some census data (and I'm trying to remember the overlay service I used for that one) and compared that data with this

The median calculation is great

3:30 PM
oooh, census data in google earth sounds super familiar
that may be the thing that you want to comix with the data from padmaper

@drachenstern Thanks, but the main thing at the moment for me is to get a feeling for what is expensive, what is cheap etc. Padmapper already works perfectly for that, a great resource.

there you have it then ;)

I'm actually ditching browsing Craigslist in favour of this :)

Since it pulls from craigslist and other sources, I would
data aggregation FTW

1 hour later…
4:52 PM
@drachenstern I'm supposed to ask about a link?
@Pekkasothertrollingaccount Well, if you're coming to the US, it's "favor" not "favour". :P
See? Spellcheck says you're wrong.

agrees that favour is correct

favour, no red squiggly lines, ha!

5:08 PM
You can't argue with red squiggly lines

I have returned, momentarily
@Moshe if you really want to pimp Nippon (since you've kind of exhausted everyone in this room, and pretty well the folks on the Bridge) you should turn now to that link
It will get you in front of many other eyes (of the sort that actually play games), and eventually in front of the entire SEI network (there's some time before that occurs, but it will eventually)

5:39 PM
@drachenstern: Hai

ohai

ircmaxell how do u do

It depends what you're asking. For example, I do type with my fingers

@ircmaxell I asked you

@SankarGanesh how do I do what?

5:50 PM
@ircmaxell how are you

I am fine. How are you?
:-P

Me too fine, why this room is not so active today

You two are making up for it by taking 15 minutes to get past "sup?"

lulz
it could be that we are working, instead of talking
I was being interrogated by my boss for my use of resharper to reformat files, so that they are more readable to me, when we don't have a consistent format in place
c'est la vie I suppose

@drachenstern I had somebody recently reformat my code to use a brace style I've literally never seen before:

5:54 PM
@MichaelMrozek Yeah, I was playing around since I feel like cr@p and am bored

if(foo)
{  bar;
   baz;
   bazz;
}
I asked him if something was wrong with his editor, on the assumption that it was a mistake

interesting case that
I'm a bigger fan of if(foo){ but otherwise the same

Well yeah; all brace styles are about 1 character away from each other :)

well said @drachenstern it was intresting one

except this one:
if ( foo )
    {
        bar;
        baz;
        bazz;
    }
else ...
those kind of upset me when I see them
I don't know why, it's rather visceral.

5:56 PM
It all upsets me

You must use python
So ... I'm about to start doing RESTful node.js ... anybody have any specific pointers?

no, I just think the logical information you disclose with braces either adds metadata or mucks it up
@drachenstern 0xDA425F98

that pointer was to some garbage
it didn't look helpful at all

Oh, you wanted specific and helpful? Why didn't you say so?

touche

6:02 PM
@MichaelMrozek The hell?

Now i m happy , bcoz everyone came here and replaying and making this room active

That's a lousy reason to be happy. I'm happy because I'm setting up some new stuff, and trying to get it all working really quickly :D
I am now loving continuous integration, and debating setting it up for my new dev server once I get all that setup and configured

The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled people make poor decisions and reach erroneous conclusions, but their incompetence denies them the metacognitive ability to appreciate their mistakes. The unskilled therefore suffer from illusory superiority, rating their ability as above average, much higher than it actually is, while the highly skilled underrate their own abilities, suffering from illusory inferiority. Actual competence may weaken self-confidence, as competent individuals may falsely assume that others have an equivalent understanding. As Kruger and Dunning...

@ircmaxell have you tried doing a googlesearch for that term?
then click the URL provided by the results
(unless they fixed it, in which case all bets are off)

what happens?

6:12 PM
nm, they fixed it I guess
it was getting listed with a emdash

ahhh

yeah, WP was vomiting on it, and there was some other problem with the URL that made it non-obvious

@drachenstern I loved continuous integration before QA got their hands on it and made it terrible

I want to figure out how to a) reformat all the code in my repos to be consistent (pipe dream) and b) I can't work out how to get ccnet to send me emails

hmm, not like that

6:23 PM
not like what?

lousy reason to be happy

calls @Lance lazy, just to see if it gets him into Chat

ok All guys, Bye see you later

6:37 PM
@drachenstern CI is awesome. CD is a lot harder (and far more awesome)

@Moshe hahaha! I have pretty strongly british-influenced spelling and pronunciation - we will see whether it survives over there. :)

@ircmaxell I presume you mean continuous development and that it is a joke?

@drachenstern No, Continuous Deployment

grrrrr I was about to post that

6:40 PM
Continuous Disintegration

yeah, I'm thinking that's stage 4 of my process here

it's really awesome, but also quite hard to pull off well

I'm on stage 1.5 right now
It will be nice to say "rubber stamped, now push to everyone"

Well, that's not CD then. CD basically pushes everything as soon as it's committed as long as it passes automated tests

Does anyone do that?

6:43 PM
automated tests == rubber stamped in my vernacular tyvm
@MichaelMrozek chrome? :p
ffs, first we have to actually write automated tests for our asp.net webforms apps :S

Ahh, ok
@MichaelMrozek Anyone do what? CD?

7:03 PM
Dunning-Kruger must be the most commonly oneboxed item in this room.
Actually I suppose it's usually mentioned without onebox. But still, it gets brought up a lot.

7:17 PM
:-D

8:17 PM
Please upvote. I'll shut up now folks.
:-D
@Pekkasothertrollingaccount Blimey, I doubt it will. They don't take to kindly to buggers who cahn't speak correc'ly. :P

@Moshe You forgot to close the shameless plug tag

@MichaelMrozek Whoops.
</shameless-plug>
:-)

@PopularDemand We need a way to figure out if that is the case ... yes?

Wes
hi

@Wes Hello.

Wes
8:30 PM
how are things @OscarMederos

@Wes - Hi
Now, instead of plugging my app... I'm going to plug my ad for my app! :-D

That ... would be counterproductive

Well, six upvotes shouldn't be too hard around here, no?
@drachenstern True. I was kidding.

@Moshe plugging your ad would likely get it downvoted, so not really :p

Anyone hear about OBL's family?
Pakistan is asking their countries of origin for permission before letting the US interrogate them.

8:33 PM
@Moshe we'll see. I'm strong-headed :P

@Pekkasothertrollingaccount A'ight matey.
Well, I've been lazy about my German. I'm incredibly overbooked with projects.

@Moshe that's usually a good thing

@drachenstern Well, usually. A lot of it is residual stuff that I left unattended because it was volunteer work.
When that builds up, it's not good.
Well.
I'm going to try and tackle some of that stuff.

Wes
good idea

@Wes - Why thank you.

Wes
8:38 PM
I neever finish personal projects

@Wes Why is that? :/

Wes
cause I lose momentum

Obviously it increases his productivity levels

Wes
Ot example. I got a DSLR Christmas 09 and spent until Easter that year taking on average 5 photos + a day. then bam I stopped.
loved it too

how many of those did you keep?

Wes
8:45 PM
@OscarMederos so I guess its just my nature
and having nobody to share with

So start a blog
And join twitter
you'll be surprised how quickly you'll end up with people in various ways

Wes
hahaha www.wesley-acheson.com hides
see what I mean

that sounds too much like wesley-addison the book publishers

wow... it took just over 3 months of looking and interviewing, but I finally have a formal offer letter coming in. So excited.

Wes
Hey well if your going to have a domain after your name. You can't help if it sounds like a known brand
@Fosco Congrats

8:56 PM
@Fosco congrats :)

WOOOHOOO

Thank you :)

@Fosco What will you be doing?

.Net development, and will be trained on Ektron CMS

Wes
@drachenstern anyway that's addison-wesley My parents totally inverted it

8:58 PM
ah, perhaps it is indeed. You say my point tho.

Wes
Yeah I did. Still its not coding related. Just a dump space
@ircmaxell Funny that I've gone so long saying I was useless. But now I think I no longer am (or even was when I thought so) shouldn't it be the other way around?
@drachenstern I tried asking in here last night about getting that range query migrated but no response.

I forget, remind me

Wes
5
Q: Why is this range based query so much quicker.

WesAt work we had a query on a table that had the following structure: ip_from(number), ip_to(number), country, city, state, isp, latitude, longitude. This table had approx 6.1 million rows. To find out the details for a given IP address we used a query like the following: SELECT * FROM Ip2l...

Still like to understand that more fully.
Also how to optimise indexes for overlapping ranges.

Just reask it on dba.se and link to this one at the head and explain you didn't get a good answer when you asked it
or tweak the question for what you want to understand more fully
you don't even have to copy what you have there, link it and expound on the part you want to know more about

Wes
Okay cool I'll do that.

Q: Related Questions not entirely related/useful

drachensternhttp://meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/90573/error-on-stack-exchange-data-explorer was posted (and quickly marked as a dupe and deleted so 10k only) and was a dupe of StackExchange Data Explorer bug (PRIMARY filegroup full) which is cool, cos people don't always read, but so I tried using the ti...

dumb request?

kinda

Do you think it would help reduce dupes if "recent" questions were portrayed as such?

Problem is, if you give too much weight to "recent" you end up finding more duplicates before you find the originals.

well the intent was to prevent the dupes so that that doesn't occur ...
but yes, I know what you mean
Just seems like for the "PRIMARY filegroup full" that could've been found in the initial RQ search, and it wasn't.

@drachenstern That wasn't in the title though.

10:42 PM
exactly, but it was distinct enough to help locate the question if one knew to look for that
and when I tried I didn't get it ...
IOW: I was smart enough to know that that was a signal, and it didn't show up for me (maybe it hates me, idk)

No, I mean, the original question had it in the title. Which is great, if you think to look for that. The duplicate did not, so it just pulled a bunch of generic "bug in X" matches.
...which really says a lot more about the importance of good titling than anything.
As soon as you put PRIMARY in the title, the original shows up. Add filegroup, and it's the top match.
Really, it's the same problem with posting your question as "C# Bug" and wondering why the C# 5.0 bug du jour doesn't show up. Yes, you could fix it by using some "hot" ranking algorithm, and there's probably a case to be made for that... But that's a really dumb query to start with.

perhaps so ... do you think that meta would benefit from a specialized version of the query?
@TylerChacha have you seen this? chrome://settings/cookies

11:06 PM
Woohoo! Down to only 9 open tabs! I can actually start to read titles again...

haha, sadly I know the feeling

@drachenstern Eh... I know "blame the user" isn't a great philosophy, but... realistically, the system works - it took 2 minutes for someone to post a link to the original. On a lower-traffic Meta site, the bug report would probably have still been on the front page.

my wife looked over at my screen last night and was like "how come you have so many tabs open"
the open ticket was still on the front page, about 6 below it
speaking of the wife ... bbiab, homegoing atm
