12:15 AM
Not everybody all at once now :p
time to configure a server while dinner cooks :D

12:34 AM
would it be dumb to install node.js from the ubu repo?

12:50 AM
I'm gonna guess so, since the online docs indicate it's only at rev 0.1.97 which is quite old

2 hours later…
2:29 AM
@drachenstern It is a beautiful interface for browsing cookies...
@drachenstern Were you talking to no one?

I was
mostly hoping someone was around :p
I thought that you might like to see that interface with your other design

I like it, a lot
I just jumped into Khan Academy
I like it
I did like the first 28 excersises
Basically Addition, Multiplication, Division and Subtraction, along with some side stuff like Prime numbers
The funny part is I can see myself getting into some pretty high level stuff with it
Bah, Robotics scheduled something on a very important Saturday
It is the Saturday that Blizzcon Tickets go on sale

they tend to do that to you :p

I'm making an executive decision. I will not be attending that event
I am instead going to be spending lots of money and then eating a $8 celebratory sandwhich

2:44 AM
Yatta!

I'm going to a TEDx event tomorrow
TEDx La Jolla

well consider me jealous
I'm not sure Shreveport LA is high on the list of places for fun groups to come around

It isn't a group
you start them

3:00 AM
See, this is why I'm not running one :p

3:18 AM
@drachenstern At least your SO meetup group didn't bail on you :P

speaking of ...

Oh boy.

Yatta! Five attendees :D

that was not 60 seconds..

that's two more than (cole + planner + site host ) so we might just be in good shape :D
@TylerChacha it was by my rough calculations

3:21 AM
@drachenstern remind me to never hire you at an hourly rate..

how long did you count it?

I didn't even read it..

45 seconds then I guess it was ...
I was assuming server clock and local clock were roughly in tune

I looked away, came back, and 2 seconds later you deleted it

lulz, sorry
it wasn't nice, so it was worthy of being deleted

3:22 AM
np

@drachenstern You would be mistaken:

A: Starring any message in the C++ room makes list of starred and pinned messages disappear

balphaFor some reason (yet to be determined) the clock on the database server was ~20 minutes off. Since the sorting of the starred messages is based on the hacker news hotness algorithm, which as a factor includes the message age raised to a fractional power, to be precise: (age in minutes + 2) ^ 1.5...

well of course! I'm on XP

Hmm...It's earlier than I expected, good stuff.

heh

WE GET IT!!!!!!! SKYPE IS GETTING ACQUIRED!!!
STOP TWEETING ABOUT IT!!!

lol
Who's buying Skype?

Let's just say Bill Gates will be making a lot of video calls in the future...

haha
Interesting.

tbh, I hadn't heard. Thanks for alerting me

> [9:11:57 PM] Tyler (Chacha): Everyone in the entire tech news sector is running around like the Queen has been shot...

also, we all know Gates has nothing to do with MS anymore

@TylerChacha, and yet, here you are, going on and on about it...

@RebeccaChernoff Do you ever come out of your hole to say anything nice? Or is it reserved for insults?

4:17 AM
She does say Oy from time to time

sorry, it's a pet peeve when people rant about something, when their rant is actually them doing that same something. >_<

^ I starred that, it is now gone. I'm pretty sure I know how that happened.

Don't be so sure. There are more than one persons in here who have a tendency to clear stars.
Just like when a THC is held on chat.se there are several mods that help clean things up

Rate limiting on SE sites is annoying. How do you expect me to get rep without spamming the place with questions?
And another thing... If I have 14K network-wide, including 6K on SO, why in the name of [Object] must I be subject to the anti-troll measures? Let me freaking see the vote count on my own answer! Why make me work for two hundred rep on a site which won't let me post more than two questions at a time?
</rant>

12:24 PM
@Moshe: agree. I think once you hit 10k or 20k across all networks, all non-moderating features should be unlocked everywhere (except things like CV, DV, Perhaps editing, etc)

12:53 PM
How do you think is really required? maybe it should be split with ?

Yeah I had to turn off that feature of chrome. kinda a bummer.

> Electorate: Voted on 600 questions and 25% or more of total votes are on questions
Should be:
> Electorate: Voted on 600 posts and 25% or more of total votes are on questions
?
For clarity 's sake

2:40 PM
that would be wrong

@balpha why?

600 votes have to be on questions, and question votes must be 25% or more of your total vote count.

ohhhh

A: Electorate badge rules?

Jeff AtwoodThey do not qualify for this badge. Pay attention to the required voting ratio. You must have at least 600 votes for questions, and your ratio of answer votes to question votes must be 3:1 or lower. If you have 600 question votes but 2400 answer votes, that means you are not eligible. If you wa...

Q: Unlock "10k tools" for a user once they have earned 15k across the SE network on all sites

drachensternThe proposal is quite simple: Unlock "10k tools" for a user once they have earned 15k across the SE network on all sites. Obviously there is some question about joining enough sites to cause this to occur just from a random vantage point of "let me log in to every single site and get lots of rep...

nice
Well, I was talking about just the basics, not all 10k tools (some of which could be site specific)

so go put that commentary on the question / edit it
it's just a question

@irc I left an answer to that effect.
I was going to ask that myself but was too lazy/ sure it was a dupe.
Oops! Your question couldn't be submitted because:

Sorry, we can't accept this question.
Uh??
On gaming. What's the deal? I'm NOT a troll!

I saw that

So there is some really good feedback already and it's only been up like ten minutes.

4:08 PM
@drachenstern Hmm, it's interesting that Moshe's answer is +3 while the question is -2. I guess people are content with just killing the original suggestion. :P

Yeah
Also funny that it was @Moshe that sparked me asking the Q in the first place

I smell a conspiracy! :o

@drachenstern I just downvoted you, but I want you to know it was @GraceNotes's fault! :)
she just made an excellent point.

who made an excellent point?

sorry (fixed)

4:12 PM
I just edited my answer. I think that there are two kinds of priveleges. See my edits.

Yeah. As I pointed out in my edit, I wasn't really asking this for me. If I really wanted to get to 10k I would
I have mod on dba, so I know what the tools are, so I no longer am curious abou tit

I'm tempted to make a typo-based joke, but...

That would be for the comms room no?

nods I try to set the bar higher, or something.

Was that the joke then? ;)
we can carry this on in the backroom if you like ;)

4:17 PM
Seems gracenote made the same point. Except for viewing vote count ratios. Ugh. I want to see my ratios on gaming.

I didn't really work through it, it's OK. :P

Backroom? That's why it's been so quiet?

@Moshe There's a userscript for that.

@TimStone for iOS?

@drachenstern The what room?

4:18 PM
@Moshe I don't know, I thought you were working on a userscript-supporting browser. ;)

@PopularDemand the nickname for our skype chat that we keep open

@drachenstern Oh, never mind, then.

do you skype?

@drachenstern I have an account, but I haven't used it in years. Literally, years. I don't even have the software installed on my current computer or its predecessor.

Be glad for that
Also, with MS now purchasing Skype .. I'm curious to see what is to become of it

4:21 PM
Glad? Odd thing to say about a program that you use.

Yea MicroSkype. It's funny though. There is no recent MS software that's not bloat.
Bloat != micro

@PopularDemand I say that about a great many programs that I use.

Hmm. Drive out to a sandwich place, or just make some instant noodles?

@drachenstern If they let the people who designed the most recent Windows Live Messenger interface anywhere near the design, I will shoot them.

You obviously haven't used Communicator
the (at my last count) third or fourth such attempt to do Skype for the Enterprise.
Ok folks, I have code to go write

4:24 PM
@PopularDemand Drive out to a sandwich place, one near my house, and pick me up something too.

@TimStone Where do you live and what do you want?

Delaware. It's a small state, pretty much everything in it can be considered close by.
Actually, I may have to go out to get something, I'm not sure if I have any lunch food here or not.

I can do that, but I'm going to leave the meter running both ways. You can expect your food in roughly eight hours.

I have a sudden feeling that ordering a pizza will be much cheaper.

@TimStone Cheaper, yes. But less awesome.
Actually, depending on where in Delaware, I could do it in under three hours.

4:30 PM
I live relatively close to PA, so northern Delaware.

Fine, go order your stupid pizza.
Good luck engaging that delivery driver in a conversation about programming or Stack Exchange, though.

Hehe.

Bug report, or would that just end up as [status-well-what-do-you-want-us-to-do-about-it]?

status-well-what-do-you-want

@drachenstern Communicator is ok, it just lacks a lot of necessary features IMHO

4:38 PM
I happen to like Communicator specifically because it has no extra bloat.

we seem to be using two different products

Microsoft Office Communicator 2007 R2?

While the names seem to match, our descriptions of the efficiencies of the software leave some room for negotiation of the actual usefulness

2007 R2

4:53 PM
Is it normal for unanswered questions to be sorted with the Newest on the bottom? I'm not sure if I did something, but I can't get them sorted in descending order again with the newest on top. Its been like this for a few days now.

@Rachel Which unanswered sort are you using?
I think you want the first one.

Currently at TEDx AFC.
Waiting for it to start

@PopularDemand I'm using the first version. It also tell me "Modified yesterday" instead of "Asked yesteday" even though if I click on the question itself there are no modification

It remembers your sort based on what you chose last, if I'm not mistaken

4:58 PM
I'm going to stackoverflow.com and clicking on Unanswered

@Rachel In that case it's just treating "this was posted" as a modification. But if a post has been edited, it should be using the edit date/time rather than the post date/time.
Is that not what you're seeing? Did you want the sort to be by post date/time?

Honestly, the "Last Modified" field is not consistent in the sorting, although I have 50 questions per page and ones from yesterday are at the top and ones from the last few minutes are at the bottom

@Rachel, I noticed yesterday that /unanswered's newest tab wasn't sorted, but I haven't looked at it yet. The unanswered page got some love recently as I recall, so something may have happened. Without looking into it I figured I was crazy, so nice to see someone else mention it (;
not all of them sort by date, but meta.stackoverflow.com/unanswered/tagged/?tab=newest used to, right?

lol glad it's not just me. I thought I'd ignore it for a few days but it still isn't working right so wanted to check if it was just me or not

it's just a random sort I thought. I didn't know it had to be most recent.

5:01 PM
@drachenstern even the newest tab?

Oh, huh, it was right for me just by chance. When I reloaded it I started seeing the same thing as you.
I probably should have scrolled down, huh?

@drachenstern no

@RebeccaChernoff The sorting isn't exactly correct either. For example, the link you posted has the top post 19h ago and the next 4 set to Last Modified: yesterday

ok, i have no clue

why'd you delete your messages?

5:03 PM
status-BUG

while the bottom 5 (from bottom to top) is 59min ago, 2 h ago, 1h ago, 3h ago

@RebeccaChernoff cos they were wrong

but they had replies

I see... its sorting the results per page in ascending order by the date of the original post, not the last modification

one had a reply :p
@Rachel that doesn't seem to be what I see ... but I'll assume we're looking at two different tabs

5:08 PM
using the creation date of the post is correct. that hasn't changed.

@drachenstern I was using Rebecca's link above (meta.stackoverflow.com/unanswered/tagged/?tab=newest) with 50 results per page, and the answers are being sorted in ascending order by date of original post. It should be descending and I'd rather it showed the date it was sorting by

but on stackoverflow.com/unanswered/tagged/?tab=newest I'm seeing random ordering of times. I see some in the middle that are newer than the ones at the top and the bottom

It is showing the date of the last modification, but sorting by the date of the original post

I'll agree with this sentiment: "I'ld rather it showed the date it was sorting by" wholeheartedly
@Rachel when I click through to the posts, the ones in the middle are NEWER than the other two
regardless of what the front screen says

@drachenstern Which post are you clicking on? When I go click on the questions the Original Posting dates line up correctly

5:12 PM
@Rachel This issue has been a gotcha for me before. Very strange for it to sort by something you can't see.

@drachenstern Looks to me like they're sorted by question creation date, but each page is backward.

removed to reduce screenheight

So the oldest question in the given page of results is at the top.

removed to reduce screenheight

Its just a tad annoying because I don't like having to scroll to the bottom to see the newest questions

5:13 PM
@TimStone If the pages are backwards then this can be easily solved by looking at the reflection of the monitor in a mirror.

@Rachel agreed

@Hogan I was actually thinking of subcontracting out to @RebeccaChernoff, backwards is her area of expertise.

And @TimStone takes it in for the dunk!

@drachenstern The sort is (incorrectly) correct. The 1st about Production Data Lost was posted 16min ago and at the top and the 2nd about qt-something was posted 13min ago and in the middle

pfft, your dig on me in the cdn post wasn't enough? you had to get another one in? >_<

5:15 PM
Oh, I had already forgotten about that one.
Just spring another THC on me and you'll get your revenge. :P

@Rachel yeah, I was looking at that, I swear before the sort had some newer ones at the bottom. perhaps I switched tabs to much in "testing" and wasn't methodical enough

<<Hogan tries to look innocent>>

Now, getting back to the issue of lunch.
> With Skype, you can talk, instant message (IM) or make video calls for FREE*. Now available on select new Dell PCs.
raises brow Uh, good job there Dell? "Software you can download at any time, free of charge, now included on some of our computers!"

Lunch? Who said lunch? I could go for some chinese takeout

@drachenstern where would you take her?

5:21 PM
@drachenstern Tim and I discussed food like an hour ago. Where were you?

The sad part is I've made zero progress on that since then.
Though I did do laundry, so points to me anyway.

@TimStone It's still less work for you if Dell installs it for you. And you can blame them if something goes wrong.

@ircmaxell wouldn't you like to know?
@PopularDemand here. Salivating less since before I considered chinese takeout. More now.
@TimStone bah, now you remind me that I have a load that's been in the washer for a few days :(
Since Sunday afternoon, and today's Teusday ... time to restart the washer I suppose
Unless I was smart and put it in the dryer ... >.>

I bet that smells really nice about now.

@drachenstern Not really

5:24 PM
@ircmaxell exactly
@TimStone I really don't often have a problem with that
Did once upon a time when I lived in GA ...

@PopularDemand Hm, it is always nice to have someone to shake a fist at.

@TimStone So you are learning.

@drachenstern Just provide vid^M^M^M eih, not sure

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Argh, damn. I was thinking about going to pick up sushi (if only they delivered, like in Philly...), but I forgot that they randomly close in the middle of the day.

5:27 PM
@TimStone It's always nice to have someone to tell your boss is to blame rather than you

If you really wanna watch me eat rice and chicken ... hmmm :p

I'm watching one of the Google I/O sessions that is being streamed, and the presenter's laptop went in to automatic windows updates (;

@PopularDemand I try to pick up things here and there.
@ircmaxell Of course. Unfortunately I am the boss to several people, so I suspect that won't turn out well for me. :P

@RebeccaChernoff why is that funny? I would almost certainly prefer to have a laptop with Windows and Office on it when I had to deal with hotels and conference centers for giving presentations. For work at the office I would expect huge workstations with massive monitors and lots of desk space running Linux and Chrome, but for hotels ...

@RebeccaChernoff Hahah, nice. They weren't using the Chrome OS, that's blasphemy! ;)

5:29 PM
@TimStone Well, but it's someone to point the finger at at least

@drachenstern um, because it is still configuring updates/rebooting and is a waste of time during a presentation being streamed live to lots of people?
funny in a "that sucks" kind of way (;

details details
I've always preferred when the guy doing the talk has a VM all lined up, goes to use it, and it bluescreens (or whatever) so he does the presentation on his actual box since he can't use the prefabricated VM ... seen that now twice

5:43 PM
Huh. Turns out that my international data plan didn't cover everywhere I thought it did after all..

I am once again tempted to go all the way out to Krispy Kreme and just get a couple donuts for lunch instead of real food. What say you?

Sounds good to me.

Foodwards!

@TimStone so what did you end up being charged?
Myself also going after food, bbiab

Something in the area of several hundred dollars, heh.
$10/MB, good stuff.

6:37 PM

Ooo. Apparently I've been on meta for 1 year

@Reno I'm confused by at least half of that list

is officially pissed off

6:56 PM
@ircmaxell Why's that?

due to a piece of garbage internet connection I lost 3 days of work

Oh wow, that sucks. :/

ruh roh

Hello agan

is going to try again using rsync and pray for better luck
/sbin/cp is quite slow. Less than 100mbps

7:06 PM
@Reno I looked at the original article. It said nothing about those jobs being less stressful -- the writer just made it up.

Q: Should self-answered "It was something stupid I was doing" questions be deleted?

Philip RieckThere are a couple of categories of the self-answered question that to me, seems like noise. Personally, I think the first category should be deleted, and I'm in the air on the second category - although if I'm looking for some solution via google and land here, I'm going to look to the accepted...

@schourode @balpha I don't get it. Why is there a snowman in unicode?
good question, actually

@balpha So we can identify Rails developers and avoid them?
But yeah, someone apparently thought that the snowman was a universal symbol for snowy weather, since the snowman is classified as a "Weather and astrological symbol"

@balpha Better question: why did they have to bring race into it?

it's not about race. someone put the snowman into the microwave.

7:18 PM
@TimStone Google's preview of reddit says you're right.

Oh, but the snowy weather snowman is not that snowman, hmm...
Ah, the Black Snowman is "heavy snow"
And the Snowman Without Snow is "light snow"

Is there an SE site for this question? SU? Programmers SE?

To typography.SE!
Hah, that proposal actually exists.
