@MikeM. As of today, mods now have an easy way to review all flagged comments by a user. If they find a user acting inappropriately, they will act as needed. — bluefeet ♦ 2 hours ago

@Quill now you need one for comments that weren't deleted.

That goes with the auto-flag on the posts that you serially didn't vote on, right?

@bjb568isnotapebble same. I got criticised for wrapping an if block in braces earlier

Things would be better here probably if there was a management hierarchy. As is, we just argue about things for literally weeks on company time instead of making a decision.
Also, with each passing day I realize just how unique it is to be able to actually do web development well. These guys basically just started coding, while I've been doing it for 7 years. It shows in how they approach problems and how little they know about different technologies.
They didn't know what procedural programming is until I educated them and they still think OOP (in a C-based style) is the only thing that is actually used.
Makes me think that maybe AP CS is corrupting them or something. It's just sad how provincial they are when it comes to think about solving problems and architecting.

CS doesn't necessarily teach you decent practices, experience does, mainly.

Gahd. And yet, there are initiatives to get even more people, especially the non-"cis-white-male-scum" who aren't also people, an extremely shallow intro to programming, often not covering writing code let alone tackling actual software development challenges.
@Quill It's not just practices, it's the way you think when you analyze a situation or task and when you decide between things.

1:54 PM
That said, while I'm not thrilled at being treated like a junior, I'd rather get talked to like an idiot than teach beginners all day
@bjb568isnotapebble it sounds like you're expecting them to be decent at something without experience

Eh, I'm fine with beginners, as long as they aren't already doomed from lack of potential.
@Quill They need to take initiative themselves!
Do you think anybody was there to encourage me, motívate me, coach me, teach me Action Script in 2nd grade when I stumbled upon a tutorial for making a game with Flash on some web site?

I suggest you move your point of focus from the beginners to a focus of moving yourself up their chain

@Shog9 - Any chance that this approach has a shot at getting discussed by the team? meta.stackexchange.com/q/280668/178816 (include tags in the questions which may have your answer search criteria)

@TravisJ I can answer that for @Shog9

oh cool

We're currently discussing a variety of ways to improve the /ask page, the problem with this one is the way the page is laid out right now - title at top and tags at the bottom, we're figuring it's rare a user will add both tags first then title to get results. So... at this point it's not the table, but as I said we're actively discussing several ways to test that page. I will keep this in mind when we set up some tests.

user248725
I still like the idea of a first-time user getting a form that says "What is this question about? (tags)" with the tags textbox, then "What's your problem in a sentence? (title)" with the title box, then a big text box for the body with the label "Describe your problem. Include lots of details, like a sample of the code that makes it and what you want to happen."

7:17 PM
@bluefeet - That is understandable. One aspect that you could do to test this right now without changing the page layout or design would be to send some sort of flag to see if the title search was done when there were tags included but the body was empty.
@QPaysTaxes - I think that since the tags carry so much search weight, having them up front is a good idea.

user248725
@TravisJ I was mostly joking, 'cause "let's rearrange the /ask page" gets proposed so much, but if you like it feel free to run with it

@QPaysTaxes - It isn't just me, Mr. Anderson.

@TravisJ Well we're in the process of gathering a list of things to test on that page, maybe that will be one but it's in progress.

user248725
I remember something talking about it at some point

7:23 PM
@Magisch a variety of reasons

@bluefeet - Nice :) I noticed that some of the main requests in the discussion were revolving around a wizard.. is that the direction your tests were angling at? Is that a serious consideration (the wizard implementation)?

@Magisch I went through a stage where I was running a lot and hurt my foot (i.e. it was blue) and I also have a tattoo on my foot which just happens to be blue

:o
thats neat

@TravisJ not sure what will come from it. We have to test what is going to work best and then iterate over that

@bluefeet - Okay. Thanks for the scoop, that was interesting :D

7:28 PM
sure, sorry I don't have more details yet.

Don't be, that was great. I know it is a complicated process

and it's not as simple as me saying let's test this, we might need dev, designers, etc involved to get something set

A: Procedure on handling formerly on-topic questions

Brad LarsonI don't think you're going to get a definitive, step-by-step checklist on how to handle closed but highly-voted questions, if only because the community has been divided on this since the start of the site. Also, each case can be very different. A large debate was had years ago about whether or ...

A: Close Votes review: I'm going on a strike!

Shog9 Therefore, I see no other option but to go on a strike: I will not review any close vote question until a serious effort will be made by SO dev team to address the close vote queue size issue. If, up until now, you were reviewing close votes to make us happy... You were doing it for the wron...

Also, not exactly sure I would mind if the CVR would do that... a lot less complaining for me. ;P
Not that I would take part though...

I just pointed out that SOCVR started because of that ^ post

Considering the SOCVR seems to have a "something must happen" response to every single question... there is a lot of whining that doesn't need to happen in there

@rene that is a hypothetical question, yes.

9:21 PM
Thanks
@hichris123 sure
We can be a bit more laid back

Eh, it's certainly not everyone in there. But a lot of people seem to polish their mirror and find some closeable problem with a question -- when editing or downvoting would work.

yeah, using all options instead of only closing would be great
specially the editing stuff
I edited one yesterday that was being closed as a tool request
Maybe seeing value is difficult if your mind is set to closing/deleting

Yeah... I remember arguing with someone in there over some phrase that "obviously" signaled a tool rec (which was "a good solution"). I mean, really? Of course someone wants a good solution, they don't want a bad one!

It shouldn't be about words but about intent of the post. But that requires some expierence

Quality is good, but driving off good questions by closing them all doesn't help anything.
@rene If I remember correctly, this was from someone with long experience in the room.

9:35 PM
Yeah, I would really only want to look at fresh stuff. If a post starts gathering dust don't bother ...
@hichris123 >:(
maybe we lack some criticasters
Not the ones on meta, but people like you who dare to come in an bring stuff up for debate

Yeah... the problem is if you do that too much, it sounds like all you want to do is be negative and "have it in" for the room or certain people.

@hichris123 sure, those who can't bare criticism can leave

I suppose, but if all I were to do is say "no, I disagree"... would people really listen to me? Would they even want to discuss it?

All actions can be scrutinized when asked for is in our FAQ

Especially considering that I'm not a regular or room owner or anything.

9:44 PM
@hichris123 as a group they think they are right. The point is they also need to learn how you gain more experience from your past actions. That self-learning-process is weak if existing at all
@hichris123 it really doesn't matter. being called out is not limited to RO's or regulars
at least not in my mind
I really hope I can spend next month a bit more in the room. Last month was crazy with projects and deadlines

@rene True, but if someone who you kinda sorta know walks by and starts saying you're doing things wrong... you'd probably be a bit annoyed.

@hichris123 well, tough luck. They better get their act together and listen, like I would expect also for a 1-rep user we shot down in 1 minute
anyway, just keep being annoying, we need that @hichris123
for now, I'm off, i need some sleep
