@drachenstern Well, they could have just passed the password to the email script directly and stored it in the DB hashed...
But coulda woulda shoulda. :P
We all know they didn't >_>

I highly doubt that.
If they did that, they would've have emailed the password.

@TimStone only on initial create, that's the ONLY time
I presumed he meant that they sent an email AFTER his account was created with the password in it

Right, of course.
I assumed he got the "Your account was created and we're afraid you can't remember the password you created ten seconds ago" email, but. :P

ok, so $(storedFieldID).blur(function(){ anonymous happenings on $(this) }) isn't firing ... damnit!!

@TimStone Yah, that's basically it.

4:02 PM
@TimStone I saw where you were going ;)
@GeorgeMarian oh, then that might be what they did

The whole thing reeks of stupidity though, so. Heh

@drachenstern Yah, but I doubt it highly.

I've gotten that from some orgs before ... useful for storing in my gmail with my +address so I can prevent the lookups later

If they knew to do that, they should know that email is not a secure medium.

otherwise I reply to that email to myself with the password so I can still do a token lookup
@GeorgeMarian no medium is 100% secure.
well, I guess you could kill BOTH the messengers once they've actually gotten into the same room, but that kinda defeats the whole purpose ...

4:04 PM
@drachenstern Sure, but this is a question of their understanding of the security implications.

@GeorgeMarian true.

And, I have a hard time finding work...sheesh...
Ok, I think that's outta my system now. :)

yay
time for OBs
Thanks to the Internet we finally have a place where we can talk sh*t about the Amish
TODAY IN: 1949 The salary of the Pres of the US was increased from $75,000 to $100,000 w/an aditl $50,000 expen allownce 4 ech yr in office.

@drachenstern I'm Amish...

@CodingGorilla I highly doubt that even an Amish person would find that offensive, but I'm offended at the thought that you might be offended by such a thing :p :p :p

4:07 PM
I didn't say I was offended! :P

@CodingGorilla I was going on the earlier channel

@TimStone \o/
Now find vim and emacs

Ah, that was a much cleverer direction, nice. :P

4:09 PM
I actually was going to post that I doubted you were Amish but then figured that you could be and just be on rumspringa ...

Awesome.. just noticed Balpha mentioned me in a Tweet.

@YiJiang only 31 rep? :-(

@Fosco Oh?

@drachenstern No, I think being in this chat room and being Amish are actually mutually exclusive

4:11 PM
@CodingGorilla possible

@CodingGorilla So, there probably aren't any Amish tech companies then eh?

@Josh Hahaha

Because they would be good answers to my question over on programmers.

4:13 PM
@TimStone nothing exciting, just a konami code reference for w3fools.com... if I knew how to link it i would

@mootinator There probably are, but I think they produce like horse drawn carriages =P

lol

@Fosco Ah ha. Still, being in a balpha Tweet is pretty hot stuff. ;)

@Fosco what's the URL for the tweet in reference?

4:14 PM
up up down down left right left right b a #w3fools /via @gfosco

@TimStone How did you get the URL?... damn #newtwitter

http://twitter.com/#!/balpha/status/27071450368184322

@Fosco The timestamp is a link

click the date

oh, .. ok thank you.

4:14 PM
damnit tim quit being faster than me :p
speaking of ... whose move is it?

:P

should I get my phone out?

Mine still, I think.

I don't know why, but sometimes the Twitter OB URL doesn't seem to redirect properly on Firefox, and I get a 404

oh ok

4:15 PM
I got some obscure letters that don't play well off of slushy

lol, oh we started a new one yeah?

Yeah

I'm going to see if I can play as few letters as possible and try to force you to play outwards
reticulating splines and all that

I need to find 12-hour loratadine. The only thing I've seen so far is Claratin-D, which contains pseudoephedrine.

I wonder who at Maxis was the one to stumble across that word and thrust it upon the geekdom

4:17 PM
Interesting.

@GeorgeMarian I have to take Sudafed for my allergies, and it sucks
Also, federal law only allows me to buy 1/2 the normal dose, otherwise I must be making meth

@Josh I take it occasionally, when it's really bad.

@GeorgeMarian generally the -D less variety (Claritin, as opposed to Claritin-D) don't have ephe

I have bad allergies, and in the spring and fall I sometimes need 2 12-hour doses a day. Which is stupid because it means sleepless nights for me since I can only buy enough for 1 12-hr dose per day

I always thought -D was for debuging...

4:19 PM
@Josh Yah. That drives me nuts.

I use Veramyst which helps with both my PND and my allergies
otherwise I live on stuff like claritin

And the anti-pseudoephedrine laws have actually made meth production worse and created a new class of criminals who buy up pseudoephedrine products and sell them on the new black market for 700%+ markups

have you guys tried nasal sprays?

@drachenstern Yah. I haven't found 5mg loratadine. It all seems to be 10mg.

your tax dollars at work... again...

4:20 PM
@Josh This is usually the case with over-regulation

@drachenstern no, I should. I hate the thought of it but if it works
@CodingGorilla Agreed

@GeorgeMarian oh you need 5mg loratadine? ... have you tried asking an MD?
@Josh oh it works WELL
I use it once per morning and I'm good all day

I have tried the newer non-pseudoephedrine products and they're not as good

and I don't feel as shitty as I did taking pills

Point is I tend to take diphenhydramine as a sleep aid. So, I'd like to limit the number of antihistamines in my system.

4:21 PM
but I don't like the OTC sprays, literally I'm on a RX only spray

I'll try them, thanks @drachenstern. I despise sprays/drops/etc but if 5 min of discomfort keeps me feeling better all day/night, it's worth it

Awesome video commentary by Dr. Ben Goldacre on the Placebo Effect: idle.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=11/01/18/1637222

@GeorgeMarian yeah that's the other issue is pseudoephedrine makes you wired

@Josh try ten seconds of discomfort .. pretty much just worrying about the stuff dripping back down again. There's no burn, there's no pain

@drachenstern I would if I had insurance. I would also like to actually know what''s causing it. But, I'm pretty certain it's mold allergies.

4:22 PM
@GeorgeMarian a) mold allergies??? b) are you a 1099 then?
or just in between?

@drachenstern I'm out of work, ATM. =(

additionally, yeah, you need insurance for the good meds :( stupid capitalist system dominated by oil markets and corrupt political policies :(

@GeorgeMarian I'm Jealous...

New site proposal: allergies.se, go

Boo... Dog is walking around being sick on everything :/

4:23 PM
@Fosco Don't be. It sucks, actually. Well, if the income was taken care of, it'd be fine. I could fill my time with productive activities just fine.

@GeorgeMarian wish I could help but Seattle is out of my ability there
@mootinator oh that sucks
mine has decided to shit about a half a regular load during the night while I sleep, even tho we walk about six times a day ... still goes during the day tho

@drachenstern Well, I am potentially willing to relocate. ;) (Though, I don't have to funds to do so. lol)

lol I had that problem for a while

Everyone just needs to learn Java so I can hire you all in the future to do my work for me. ;)

My father may have a lead for a construction supervisor job. But, I fear that he wants me to commit w/o it being a solid lead.

4:26 PM
Oh, why oh why did I ever agree to let our CEO put this one new client on a payment plan?????

We're no SOIS, but clearly I have liberal chat policies, and that's what it's all about.

@TimStone Actually, I do know Java. However, it's been a while.

@Josh Oh, that's going down a dark road, heh.

@TimStone what're you talking about? They don't seem to be allowed to use chat :p
@TimStone bah, I'll do the .NET integration stuff for you

@TimStone @RebeccaChernoff If you want to I can add you two as viewer for the analytics data

4:27 PM
@TimStone Yeah. She's now 3 payments behind and just made a measly little payment, not near what she owes. We're a SaaS company, not a bank!

@YiJiang Sure :)

Yah, we don't really do PHP, we're a .NET shop, and just hired a single guy for PHP fresh out of school, so I think that's shored up for now :\

I... just need your Google Account, hmmmm

@Josh We're in the fortunate position of catering to customers who have plenty of money and budget far in advance, heh.

@TimStone Your company needs to switch to a better language so you can pay all us to do your work for you :-)

4:28 PM
@YiJiang You already have it, look at the commits.

Hahah

@TimStone We normally do, we get paid upfront. This one client asked for a payment plan and our CEO asked the partners (myself included) if we could give her one, something we never do

@GeorgeMarian Conveniently, Java hasn't changed any in that time period, I'm sure >_>

That's what I get for trying to be nice, pffft

4:29 PM
@TimStone Lol, good point.

Note to self: > ID means # in selectors

@TimStone Eh... where?

@drachenstern I know, that's why I figure I have the leg up here. ;) Also, our particular client base is slave to different monopolies, and tends to shy away from .NET, heh :P

@TimStone and they choose Java?
oooh, misparsed that the first pass

@YiJiang If you look at the log locally you should be able to see it.

4:31 PM
@drachenstern It may be that they chose Java, way back when.

@TimStone so I hear I can learn Java pretty quickly... what was the town in PA I need to relocate to again?
damn you C#, what happened to my ID???
<table id="emailTable" class="datatable" style="border-collapse: collapse;">

It D flat

Our office is a bit north of Philly, but that's not where I live. ;)

<table cellpadding="0" border="0" style="border-collapse: collapse; width: 100%; font-size: medium;">

@drachenstern heh

4:32 PM
why oh why oh why do you feel the need to strip my effing ID and CLASS you stupid heffer
I must be looking at the wrong part of the code ...
reparsing

@TimStone I... don't quite get it. I don't see any email or anything in any of the logs

git log doesn't show you who committed?

@YiJiang It should be attached to the user.

Oh, that

4:34 PM
Yeah, sorry. I should have been more clear.

I see. Oh, why doesn't it show in the web interface?

So your email isn't all over the place, I suppose. :P

@YiJiang Web interface? git on the command line, man! ;)

@GeorgeMarian On Github, I mean

@YiJiang Yeah, I figured. I was just trying to be funny.

4:36 PM
Eh... I only see my last four commits, probably because I messed up the commit history with my... erm... I don't know... urgh
Oh, there it is. Gosh, I'm dumb.
Eh... it's 12.30 am here. I need sleep, clearly.

@YiJiang Have you seen Git Magic?

@GeorgeMarian I probably should have read something like that before trying anything

Why do I get five million tooltips on that page?

@TimStone It's thanking me everywhere

@YiJiang Yup. Git is great, once you understand how it works.

4:39 PM
Weeeiiirrrddd... I think it must have been a malformed HTML tag

Q: Identify which parameters were passed to a procedure (Oracle)

Leigh RiffelProcedures in PL/SQL can have default values for parameters, but the caller can pass values that are identical to the default values. Is there a way from within the PL/SQL to determine whether a parameter is passed? As implied this cannot be done by comparing the value with the default value.

@YiJiang Everything has title attributes O_o

@TimStone jQuerify with Firequery, run jQuery('[title]').removeAttr('title'); :P

@drachenstern Why would you need to know that? checks to see if there's more to the question.

why wouldn't you need to know that?

4:40 PM
@YiJiang Eheh

Consider this scenario:
I have a textbox on a page for searching details on that page. It on load says "Search" and on focus I want to remove "Search" but only if they didn't type in the literal word "Search". Because otherwise, how would they search for the word "Search".

But you wouldn't default to searching for search.

So how do you know if the word "Search" was the one they typed or the one you provided by default?
literally this is a real world example, it's what I'm working on right now ;)

...Why would you provide it by default?

@drachenstern Eh... use a class, attach a submit even handler, prevent submission if the class is present

4:43 PM
no no no, not as default, but as a label
it's a form of self labelling a field
@YiJiang yes, that is the solution I went for, however you're focusing on the problem I presented as a parallel
the question @TimStone asked is why would you need to do that for a procedure
in reference to my OB

@drachenstern Use the usual label in form element method - using CSS, position the label element in the input element

Fade it out on focus, fade it in if the the textbox is empty on blur

Yeah, I understand your example. But it doesn't really...relate. :P

I didn't want to put yet another element on the page (it's already busy enough) and I figure a self documenting textbox is sufficient with a modicum of training

4:44 PM
Use jQuery -- This isn't the definitive answer?

honestly if you see those two do you grok what is intended?

The search text being there is a user interface thing.
Why would you set a default value for a parameter if you cared if the default value was used or a value was passed that happened to be the same?

@TimStone but it does relate ... there are cases where you may need to know if the value being used in a query is the stagnant default or the actual passed value

Honestly, it's better if you use an additional label element - you are after all trying to label it, no?

@TimStone filtering logic is the only thing that occurs to me
@YiJiang no

4:45 PM
I don't get why you'd take two different paths on the same value. It seems like you had a poor choice of default value if that's the case.

I want to provide a clue. It doesn't need a label. In the full page it is a little more self-explanatory
@TimStone I'll go with that. But I see that there are some cases where you might want different logic depending on the two
a slim number of cases, but I can foresee that they would exist

@drachenstern Meh, the other solution I've seen is to use search as the placeholder text

@YiJiang isn't that what I'm doing?
ohhh you mean with spaces

Q: Confirm that my.cnf file has loaded OK.

TobyDoes anyone know if there is a way to confirm if any my.cnf file is being read by MySQL? I only have the one my.cnf on the machine (and there are no my.ini files) which I have in /etc/my.cnf. When I run ./mysqld --help --versbose it doesn't give me the variable I have set in the file, so my ass...

(Space there because it is assumed that the user will never input those intentionally)
Alternatively, use HTML placeholder attr, and ignore all other browsers that doesn't support it :P

that one I'm confused about

4:48 PM
There are so many way to do this - I've seen too many of these questions on SO :P

Yeah, so I just attached a second class to the field and left it alone. (Literally called .leftAlone) so if it has that field they didn't type anything
she's running out of work!! Somebody /assign rchern! :p
cue her presence in 5 ... 4 ... 3 ...

Q: What is the difference between “tits” and “boobs”?

SergeyWhat is the difference between “tits” and “boobs”? P.S. I'm not sure if this question is appropriate but as English is not my native language I really would love to know the difference.

/assign rchern rubbish bin duties

'Ello @balpha

@balpha you're too late, we've already been all over that

4:50 PM
@balpha @drachenstern already posted that

grmph

or rather, we'ld like to be all over that? <.< >.>

@balpha lol

@balpha rchernified!

oy

...I see to be @-mentioned on that list an alarming number of times.

single letter 22 point placement activate!
@TimStone indeed

Maybe I should ask on english.se what the difference between "grmph" and "hrmph" is

I've come to see that I use this one too often chat.meta.stackoverflow.com/…

4:54 PM
@balpha Different grunting sounds :P

@balpha grmph is more angry
What's your beef with the question?

they're both artifacts?

Do I need to reiterate what I said to Moshe? :-)

@Josh whose beef and which question?

Shocking. I switch back to this window and people are talking about me. >_<

4:54 PM
'grmph' for Orcs :P

@Josh my beef is just that I was posting old news :)

@RebeccaChernoff what's more shocking is we're talking about you when you don't switch back as well

@balpha oh HAHA
@RebeccaChernoff us? talking about you? never!

@drachenstern |:

@RebeccaChernoff I can see that I have pleased the lady this morning ;)

4:57 PM
@RebeccaChernoff @TimStone Can you check if you have analytics access now?
Just added

\o/
I do.

@drachenstern Didn't we just have a discussion about inappropriate chat

ok, seriously, I've got a <div class="mid" id="emailTable"> and the ID doesn't make it to the page .. wtf?

@CodingGorilla yes and we concluded that if you're going to hang out in The Tavern, you'd better not get offended easily ;-)

bbc.co.uk/podcasts/series/witness The BBC produces some very interesting history programs

4:58 PM
@CodingGorilla yes and I already managed to forget what the point was
I think something about a working set of taps at the bar

@drachenstern Is the id unique?

speaking of ... I need to go out for drinks sometime soon
I should also meetup with the local jQuery or whomever has one meetups in town
@YiJiang yes, cos it's manually assigned by me

No other reason why it might not appear - check whatever server-side language you're using, and maybe caching

@drachenstern I'm still waiting for @RebeccaChernoff to arrange a SO meetup

oooooooh damnit for having four similarly formatted grids all in a row
