What's with the obsession of creating separate *-dialog tags for everything on Meta?

1:07 AM
Dialog all the dialogs!

Hi, can I get one last closevote on my post so it isn't left hanging?

Q: Closing question as off-topic and not on a suggested site

ObsessiveSSOℲWhen flagging/voting to on-hold a question, I seem to have missed the option to simply flag as off-topic or belonging elsewhere on stack overflow. I'm presented with the following list: general hardware/software->Superuser non-specific programming->get more info bad question not understanding ...

2:11 AM
BOOSH
Or...
SWOOSH
OR something.

@ObsessiveSSOℲ BTW, since I haven't seen you in chat for a while, you might be interested in this: area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/43029/…

Any thoughts what's going on here? i.stack.imgur.com/thVPN.png
I'm getting this message
and yep, it happened there too (note: this was supposed to be a screenshot of a DNS error message, but the screenshot broke for the same reason)

The image was removed? Where are you seeing it?

DNS errors "You've requested a page on a website (img.stack.imgur.com) that is on the CloudFlare network. Unfortunately, it is resolving to an IP address that is creating a conflict within CloudFlare's system. If you are the owner of this website, you should login to CloudFlare and change the DNS A records for img.stack.imgur.com to resolve to a different IP address."

I've never heard of the domain img.stack.imgur.com

Neither have I. the link(s) at which I see this error are i.stack.imgur.com

Hey guys. Been a while. :)
(To give you an idea of how long it's been, the last time I posted here—as far as I know—questions could not be "on hold".)
I know that it's possible NOW because, well. . .see Exhibit A.

Q: Is it possible to invoke a block within a here document (heredoc)?

Chris FrederickI'd like to invoke a block from within a here document (heredoc), but I can't seem to get it to work. Am I misunderstanding the syntax, or is this not really possible (using Ruby 1.9.3)? The following sample code illustrates what I am trying to do. colors = { "red" => "#FF0000", "...

I'm in the process of learning Ruby and I thought that I explained my question well, but apparently I haven't demonstrated "a minimal understanding of the problem being solved". Ouch.
Any suggestions for how to edit my question to make it eligible for reopening?

3:42 AM
Looks like a legit question to me.
I don't know why it was closed. All the reviews occurred after you edited...

4:34 AM
Interesting
My initial impression was that the reviewers didn't like the question title.
That's understandable. At the time I didn't know that my problem was with string interpolation, even though that turned out to be the answer.
Maybe I should change the question title to "How can I show the results of a block within a here document?"
Done.

Ooooo, gold Meta badge :D

Oh, nice, it looks like someone reopened the question. Thank you, mysterious benefactor! :)

Oh, yes. We all reopened it a while ago.

Cool. I was just AFK.
I'm so glad that I've spent enough time on Meta to understand how the system works. I would have been a bit irritated otherwise.
@animuson Whose gold Meta badge?

Hi, I just try to improve the quality of this question to lift the ban on question, but people are just downvoting meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/176072/…

Can anybody will try to improve it?

@animuson Nice!
@Naruto I don't think that people want to encourage a large number of answers for any given question.
A question with a lot of answers often feels like a poll, and the signal-to-noise ratio goes way down.

@ChrisFrederick Now I knows that after asking question. But now I want to lift the ban on asking question by improving the question

@Naruto Oh, I see your problem now. Hm.
Aren't you provided with a link that explains how to lift the ban?

@ChrisFrederick Yeah @hims056 provided me link.
This linkindicates that I have to improve the quality of question so I get upvotes
So I tried that but got downvotes :(

4:52 AM
@Naruto That's a little misleading on Meta because downvotes indicate disagreement as well as low quality.
I know that there's a Meta question discussing that issue somewhere. A lot of people have been stung by it.
Maybe try answering some questions?

@ChrisFrederick Thanks. I tried to answering 4-5 questions and got upvotes as well. But the ban didn't lift.

@Naruto What's the link that you were given?

@Naruto If at first you don't succeed, try and try again?
It's trite, but it may be true in this case.

@ChrisFrederick Try what? answering question OR improving question quality?

5:01 AM
@Naruto Answering questions. If your existing questions propose changes that the community disagrees with, no amount of polish is going to garner many upvotes.
If you can still post answers, try and answer questions in a way that you think best captures the community's opinion on them.

@ChrisFrederick Thanks. :) I will try this.

It's kind of a delicate balancing act on Meta. You need to be sensitive to the community.
@Naruto Just don't. . .go overboard. If you "guess" wrong and have your answers downvoted, you may be banned from posting entirely?
Anyway, just remember that votes on Meta are also used to indicate disagreement. The most well-thought-out and well-written post is going to get downvoted into oblivion if everyone disagrees with it.

@ChrisFrederick I will keep this in my mind. And I will only answer when I think that it is correct otherwise not. :)

@Naruto You may also want to do a bit more reading on Meta. Otherwise you'll end up posting questions that have already been answered.
Case in point:
1
A: Is new badges will be introduced related with question in future?

Jonathan Hobbs Now my question is what new kind of badges should be awarded to user related with their high quality questions? We already have badges rewarding high quality questions - they're questions which receive a lot of attention or interest or positive feedback.

@ChrisFrederick Ok. Ohhh this is already asked, and he also answered on my question and downvoted me. :(

5:12 AM
@Naruto Well, you really don't know who downvoted you, but your question seems to indicate that you haven't done a lot of research.
Not to say that you haven't, but that's just the perception that people will probably have.

@ChrisFrederick Thanks. I will not edit my question any more and try to answer. :)

@ChrisFrederick It is possible. Keep in mind that the thresholds for the post bans on Meta are set much higher than on Stack Overflow.

@animuson True. But apparently @Naruto has already passed one of these thresholds, anyway.
I guess what I meant to say is that I can't recall whether there are separate bans on questions and answers.

They are separate, but they do both exist, and they can both activate simultaneously.

Ah, okay. Thanks.

Grrr, this is one of those jobs that doesn't direct deposit immediately at midnight. waits impatiently for money

@animuson Client?

I work for a security company.

I just started there a couple weeks ago. Got 4.5 hours of overtime in my first week. o.o Weird.

Oh right. The delay in getting that first paycheck is always annoying.
Nice that you actually get paid for overtime!
Silly me. I should have read this blog post before I turned to the Tavern in the first place:
Jay Hanlon on June 25, 2013

It pains me when I hear people say that our sites are unfriendly, or that we chase new users away. But it’s a hard problem, because our highest priority has always been the quality of content on our sites.  And it still is. We can’t lower our standards. We won’t.

But we have been working hard to make our sites more welcoming, reminding users that feedback can be clear and nice, and helping new users learn the ropes before they get frustrated.  And, as of today, we’ve completely overhauled closing. …

3. Questions edited by the original poster automatically go to the re-open queue
Once there, other users will review and can re-open improved posts. No more flagging your own question, or going to Meta to request a formal appellate review. If you make meaningful edits to your question within five days of being put on hold, it gets considered for re-opening.

5:23 AM
Your question was reopened before you edited. :)

:)
Did it have anything to do with posting here?

Well, two of the votes came from people in this chat room...

There you go.
I just hate bugging people here if I don't have to.

Two of them came from review.

I really need to learn how the "new" review page works.

5:26 AM
What do you mean?

@ChrisFrederick Bye. Thanks for helping. :)

@Naruto No worries! Hope everything works out.

;) I try.

@animuson I don't remember seeing this Stats page stackoverflow.com/review/reopen/stats
The review queue is also ridiculously short right now.
0 first posts? Really?
The last time I reviewed a post that queue must have had hundreds of questions in it.

They get reviewed fairly quickly.
It only takes one person to dismiss a post from that queue.

5:32 AM
Ohhh
That could do it
I've got some Meta reading to do, I think :)

Q: The reason of closing vote is missing when there is an audit

John ツI've just seen that the reason of closing is missing in the reviewing page of closing votes. Click here for image. I've made a screen shot. Is it a temporary error or it's a bug? EDIT: Seems that only when there are audits the reason is missing. If I cannot upload image I will make an ASC...

I have a question, why has 'baidu been a bad boy' and why 'yahoobot is evil'?

@Shog9 Hello

4:38 PM
@BenjaminGruenbaum so, baidu crawls to aggressively I imagine. Look on google for reasons to avoid letting that particular search engine crawl your site (They're Chinese in origin if that helps you at all)
Yahoobot does not play nicely, afaik

The Baidu one is relatively recent
I know Yahoo has been on the list for a very long time. Not sure why though

I just like funny code comments :)

6:53 PM
@Shog9 Was there a recent change where unupvote events will trigger a recalc? I just got an automatic recalc shortly after an unupvote event.

@Mysticial how do you know that? (just curious; I can't recall that showing up publicly anywhere)
@Mysticial And no, this doesn't appear to be new. It's triggered by an up-vote deletion when you've hit the rep cap.

@Shog9 I repcapped today at 104,575. Then it went down to 104,565 due to an unupvote event. But that vote apparently happened on a day where I went over the cap. So my audit page still showed 104,575. A few minutes later, my visible rep jumped from 104,565 back up to 104,575. There's no other way other than a recalc or some sort of undeletion.

@Mysticial good eye. Well, that appears to be the exact purpose of the recalc trigger.

@Shog9 I get unupvote events all the time in the past and my visible rep and audit rep would get out of sync (often for days) until I deleted one of my own posts or a user removed event forced a recalc.
And I highly doubt there was a user removed event that had no effect on my rep, but triggered a recalc coincidentally a few minutes after the unupvote event.

@Mysticial it is possible that there is a bug in the code that checks for this.

7:07 PM
Basically, today is the first time I noticed that an unupvote triggered a reprecalc. (I assume you can confirm that I got a recalc approx. 40 min. ago)
In the past, it would just stay out of sync.

@Mysticial yes, you did. With the explicit reason being that you'd rep-capped today and someone retracted an up-vote.

@Shog9 Ah! Maybe that's the reason. I don't repcap everyday and when I do, it's usually late in the day. So the unupvote events I usually get are unlikely to be after I'm repcapped.
So the bug is that the recalc doesn't trigger when the user is not repcapped. (And the vote came on a different day.)
Is my guess...

@Mysticial that sounds likely. I'm not at all familiar with this logic, but a cursory examination seems to suggest that it will only trigger when you've already rep-capped (from votes alone) at the time when the vote is retracted.

Assuming that's how it works, then the fix would be to also make it trigger when the vote was cast on a different day.

@Mysticial or rather, to check for re-capping on the day when the vote being retracted was cast rather than the current day.

7:19 PM
That would make sense, though.

Oh, happy hour. I wondered what the audio notification was
Spooky.

Because I'm sure everyone needs a reminder to start drinking.

I did, actually. Time got away from me.
