It's just the anthem's first verse that is regarded offensive btw; the song itself is Germany's national anthem to this day. It's tragic really: the verse was neither meant to be about world conquest nor about territorial expansion at the time it was written. But it was obviously given that meaning by the Nazis, which is why it isn't used any more by anyone sensible.
@Pekka웃 Yeah I remember hearing something like that. Due to my Englishness (very closed-minded country), I hadn't realised that initially. For some reason I was singing "Deutschland, Deutschland, über alles" to a German girl. Didn't go down too well!
Leaving England was the best thing I could have done, in terms of learning about other cultures. The history and geography knowledge here is terrible!
