can someone upvote and/or comment any of my post? topbar websockets seems borked for me

Sue
@LynnCrumbling No - that was just my dumb way of saying I felt bad that Frank only got +35 on GL today.

@AstroCB smart-a** :P
@Sue HAH.. only 35.

@Sue well, I got +149 on MSE to make up for it...

Sue
@AstroCB I upvoted that - seems okay.
@Frank And had time to shop for baby food. Not bad...

@LynnCrumbling well generally it's more than that.

@Frank grumble

Soooo Today's question is... I liked this new post, and it made me think of a comment and further question. I wondered if it was smarter to go to the "possible duplicate" question, to keep everything in the same place, so I left a comment.

Q: "See page as it would appear at given reputation" moderator feature

Michael KjörlingNormally, moderators are shown some things by default that even a high-reputation user does not see by default. This is useful in many situations, but can sometimes cause uncertainty about what the page will look like to a regular user. I would like to see a feature that allows a diamond moderat...

I wonder if that was intentional.

When I got to the possible dup page, the discussion was similar, but based on an old profile design. So where do I post my comment?
@TravisJ I hadn't realized that.

Shahrizal PrabowoThis might be unrelated to your question, but if you really just want to learn JavaScript without the necessities of DOM, or tired of embedding it into the HTML, why don't you use Firefox Scratchpad? @Sue so you found a dupe that wasn't marked?
@TravisJ ooh, scary.
Post an answer on that thread...

Okay

Sue
@Frank I think it was a dupe that wasn't marked yet, and I know we're trying to catch dupes before they have answers on them.

Sue
10:12 PM
@Frank The new one?

@Sue If you think it's a dupe, you can flag it as one. And/or you can post the links in here and see what all these 'experts' think.
@Sue was replying to Travis, sorry

@Frank That makes sense. That's why I come here-in addition to the good company and to learn cool stuff. Since it already had a comment suggesting it as a possible dup, I figured the next step would be somebody coming along and can marking it that way, so I didn't want to clutter it up with an answer or comment.

Q: View site with a specific reputation value (lower than your own of course) or as a specific user (for mods)

Lasse V. KarlsenTo be honest I find it hard to keep up with all the changes, and very frequently I have to go look at the privileges list to see whether a user (that I'm looking at, so I have his reputation value) has a certain privilege or not. However, I still don't know what that user will actually see or ho...

@Frank - Nah don't worry about it, I only posted so you could see what I wrote :)

@Tra also, I saw this in the actual question:
> So, personally, I'm not that frequently going to my profile to, say... double check what my name is. Or confirm what city I live in. Or see if my age has changed. (Actually, the last one feels may feel like a waste most days, but ~0.3% of the time, it reminds me it's my birthday - YAY!)

I quoted that part in my answer

10:18 PM
Oh right.

;)

is getting old

haha, couldn't tell (no age in profile)

rofl
@Sue what was the dupe?
oh, there it is.

Sue
@Frank Yup. It has a lot more discussion, but is based on an older version of the profile page.
You can see my comment on the first one, which I'll remove if I respond there.
Do you think the first one will be closed as a dupe of the older?

10:22 PM
@sue this is what I do when I want close votes:
@Sue I think it should

Sue
@Frank So would it be smarter to post my thoughts on the older one, even though it's based on a much different profile page?

@Sue The older one is broader. Covers more ground.

Sue
@Frank That's what I thought.
@Frank Cool, so that's a way to catch a dupe before it has answers?

BTW, does anybody know how to route port 80 coming in to my server to an arbitrary port that node is listening to internally?

@Sue or after. It's how you can get attention to it in chat.

10:26 PM
@bjb568 - forward the port in your router settings

What router?

No router?

Sue
@Frank Cool. Can I do the same with old things that seem to be obsolete, like I was thinking about yesterday?

There's me over in my corner, and some black box somewhere in a server room owned by mediatemple. I can SSH my server, but know nothing really about it.

Hmm

10:27 PM
@Sue if they're dupes of something, yeah, otherwise, only if they are ot or vlq or similar

@bjb568 - Is it a windows machine or a linux box?

Linux. Ubuntu.

Sue
@Frank So not old and irrelevant?!

Wait. I just realised that I want hatz.

@bjb568 AWS is cheaper then.

No, I'm not switching.

@Sue Those are usually just left back in the old pages of questions.

@hichris123 Why would I want to?

@bjb568 To save money? To probably get a better server?

I'm happy with what I have.

@bjb568 - "This can be done by modifying the ssh configuration file /etc/ssh/sshd_config. You need to add a line that enables TCP Port Forwarding." I have not done this before, but this site shows a good walkthrough with code slashroot.in/…

@Frank I'm learning to be better at voting. I used to just vote things that I was interested in. Now I'm doing more voting of posts that seem well-written and make sense.

10:35 PM
@bjb568 ... that's $300!

@Sue I vote up everything.
Except junk.
Not that literally, but I could be called 'votehappy'

Sue
@Frank You caught me though - I do like voting! :)
And helping people, like you do.

:P
whoops.
how do I turn that off...

Sue
Especially in here, this community cares about each other and the health of SE in general. I don't have a lot to contribute, so if a person needs a vote, I'm in!

@Sue I'll even upvote Shog, of all people...
He really needs the rep.

Sue
10:40 PM
I'm bummed that I don't have enough rep on English to downvote that post that just came in.

(jk)
@Sue the offensive one?

@hichris123 It's a risk.

user259867
@Sue It needed an offensive flag, not a downvote. Gone now.

@bjb568 hmm?

Don't dv offensive posts or spam.

Sue
10:40 PM
@Frank Yah, totally gross. Oh - it needed a flag. Bummer, I could have done that.

Right now I am happy. If I stop doing what I'm doing, I might not be happy. Therefor, I'm not going to stop doing what I'm doing.

Sue
@Frank Thanks for letting me know the difference.

Speaking of flags - I rather dislike the Helpful Flags thing in the new profile.

@Sue did you see that Balpha fixed that chat bug you noticed?

10:42 PM
@bjb568 I am currently happy. If I walk one step, I might fall and be sad. Therefore, I'm going to sit in my chair all day long.

@hichris123 lol

Sue
I think I saved a question that I'm wondering is the current thinking. I'm going to find it.

@Frank - Don't dv? Why not?

@hichris123 Good idea.

Sue
@Frank I did, cuz you let me know with a message in the Shed. Forgot to thank you for that!

10:44 PM
I wouldn't always upvote Shog if he wasn't right all the time :)

@TravisJ Because then it's hard for flaggers to keep track of the status of the post (# of flag-wise)
@Sue ok cool

@Frank - Keep track where? I must be missing something

@TravisJ a spam/offensive flag does an automatic -1, so if no one dvs, you can see how many flags it has, and how close to 6 flags (deletion).

Ah, I didn't realize there was an automatic -1. So that means I have been -2 all the time.

@TravisJ yeah, don't do that.
it makes it harder.

Sue
10:46 PM
Is this the current question about the "helpful flags" issue?

Q: Should the number of helpful flags be public to anyone?

Patrick HofmanThis discussion came up here, by a comment from Oded: We are discussing internally whether there is a good reason to hide this value from everyone. If not, it might do a comeback. I know it is a duplicate of Showing number of helpful flags in user profile, but that one doesn't have an answe...

@Sue yeah, from <2 weeks ago

Sue
@Frank That's cool. So each flag on that question in English created a downvote?

@Frank - I can cast a delete vote at -2 though, so usually I dv to try to get there quicker so I can cast to delete.

@Sue yup.

At least on SO

Sue
10:48 PM
@Frank Thanks.

@TravisJ but it's faster for it just to accumulate 6 spam/offensive flags and get deleted by the system that way.
downvoting makes it harder for all those flaggers to keep track.
And you don't want a regular deletion on a spam/offensive post either.

K, well I will stop

Sue
@Frank What about the offensive post in here, which is now starred! To whom do I report that!

@bjb568 ^C should immediately interrupt

10:53 PM
@TravisJ There are certain penalties that are supposed to be put on users that post offensive/spam posts, that only occur when the post is deleted as such (by flags or mod). Also, when deleted as such, spam and offensive posts are viewable only through their revision history, so users with the ability to see deleted posts can't see them unless they want to.

Sue
@Frank That's one of my goals in my SE life - to be able to clean up old stuff and make the meta world less headache-inducing. I know I need a lot of years/rep, etc., but someday.........

@Braiam The point was that both node and nodejs work.
I think node is a simlink or whatever you call it.

I would do it on GL, but you guys are taking care of a lot of it over there...

@Frank If you follow this link to Travis's thing about leaving out the age - it appears he asked it after the status-declined thing below it. And the status-declined thing below that seems to relate to something that had been asked earlier.

@TravisJ I did go check it out. A little too vulgar for me, but loved the pix and what it was saying. As Frank knows, if it's animal-related, I love it!

I just remember seeing it all the time since the guy lived down the street from me

@TravisJ Even still! I had a great picture of our cats sitting with our guinea pig on top of our turtle tank, but it's old and not on the computer.

And another one of my son's pug scaring our pygmy goats.

@Frank lol! My kids got her because they lived in New York City at the time and she was a good "apartment" dog.

@Sue They do like their people.

Sue
@Frank Yah. She was more attached to my daughter-in-law than my son. Sadly, she died at 3 of a liver disease. Is that common for the breed?

11:30 PM
don't do this irl:
@Sue not majorly. Could happen to any dog. Was it an overload?

Sue
@Frank Cute! BTW, I have to admit I liked your blonde joke!
@Frank No, it started out as a bacterial infection.

@Sue heh, it was kinda funny - I just don't know what the blondes would all think.
You must've really dug transcript if you saw that. :P
@Sue Yeah, not peculiar to pugs, then

Sue
@Frank Yah - could be offensive, but I think even blondes might find it funny.

better than fat jokes.
Like a bumper sticker I just saw on a really lifted up jeep with huge wheels:
> Jack it up, fat chicks can't jump.
that could be offensive to some people.
The other sticker said:
> Phil Robertson for president
some people...

Sue
@Frank Yah - fat jokes tend to be rude.
I found a rude comment on some site the other day but went back to flag it and it was gone - was glad to know they got it really quickly.

11:38 PM
yeah, we don't tolerate much rudeness to others/degradation here on SE
When I see anything offensive, I don't wait and come back to it - I flag it right away, and report it unless it was already posted in here

Sue
@Frank That's one of the things I like about you. It seems true of a lot of people in here.

@Frank - I've seen the opposite of that lifted jeep. A small truck which was like 2 inches off the ground with a bumper sticker that said "fat chicks make my ride scrape". (since we are sharing potentially offensive bumper stickers)

@TravisJ I've seen those trucks - what's the point anyway?
Prolly some kind of social statement most likely

Who knows, seems pointless to me. I like ground clearance.

@TravisJ So do I.

11:43 PM
Actually I prefer all wheel drive 6-speed v8s :)

My regular truck isn't lifted, but it has some clearance anyway.
@TravisJ so what's wrong with v12's?

10's and 12's are a lot harder to come by :P

other than that they cost over $100k in most cases....

Sue
You guys have those great big tires, like monster trucks?

Although I am going to drive a ferarri at the end of the month for a few laps in vegas :D

11:45 PM
@Sue Mine aren't monster, but a little bigger than car tires

@Sue - I don't, my car doesn't have much ground clearance (it isn't lowered though)
245/55/15 I think

@TravisJ Lambo's are more fun tho...

Sue
@TravisJ That's what I thought.
@TravisJ ha ha, just kidding - don't know anything about tire sizes :)

@Frank - Yes they are, especially since they are AWD while ferrari is only RWD. But alas, none of those to rent for the day/lap

Sue
@Frank Do you have a car too? Or just keep on truckin'

11:47 PM
@Sue - height/width/rim I believe

@Sue cars too

Sue
@Frank Such as...
@TravisJ Figured it was something like that. We actually spent a lot of money this year on snow tires - turned out to be a major blessing.

@TravisJ you know you can pull over 1200 horsepower from a 387.2 cu.in. v8 engine with dual turbos?
0-60 in 2.78 secs

@Frank - Yeah, but that is a lot of boost. 6 lbs each? 10? Gets expensive quick

I want that car^^

11:51 PM
@Frank You can make that approach 0 by reducing mass.

@bjb568 there are specs they have to meet

Sue
@Frank Quite a car! Can't put any dogs in that thing!

@Sue nope

@Frank define they

@bjb568 the manufacturers

11:53 PM
@Frank Oh, well, screw safety and all that!

@Frank - 2.78 is pretty fast. My car does like 6.4

You can accelerate infinity fast!

@TravisJ My truck (surprise) can do 6.7
It's so heavy that suprised me.

Yeah that makes sense if you have a performance one. Most people don't know how little trucks weigh.

Of course, with regular road tires, it'd burnout

11:55 PM
Heavy and 6.7? Is it stock?

@TravisJ The engine isn't huge either. 5.9l v8 magnum engine from '99

Sue
@TravisJ I just found out you live in California! I'm jealous - want to be someplace warm.

@TravisJ yeah, dodge ram 1500 laramie slt from '99, rated for 0-60 in 7.0
@TravisJ Who are you driving for?

@Frank - Just for fun, I am paying to rent for a few laps

@TravisJ oh, ok

11:58 PM
It will be my birthday present to myself :)

Sue
@TravisJ I thought it would be warmer, but I love all that sun!

@TravisJ here's a pic of my truck:
nothing spectacular

@Sue - We are actually having a cold front at the moment, it is usually warmer.
@Frank - I love dodges. I drove a '84 ram for a long time, learned how to drive on it.

Oh, I've been to Santa Barbara.

Sue
@Frank Those don't look like huge tires.

11:59 PM
@Sue they aren't.
