Q: Is Stack Overflow just for elite programmers?

Shay Malloy Possible Duplicate: Could we please be a bit nicer to the noobs? I'm a student, and I asked a question about one of my assignments which I had been working on for about two days. How can be a question about Stack Overflow being for elite programmers be the duplicate of a question asking to be nicer to beginners?

1:56 AM
@kiamlaluno Seems like a very random thing for random to do.

2:16 AM
@kiamlaluno The question is basically: I'm a noob; why isn't anyone nice to me?
And by extension: should I not be here if I'm not an elite programmer?

2:27 AM
@Chris It also have a link to a question, which means the question is not just "why isn't anybody nice to me?" The user is asking if Stack Overflow is the right place for his/her questions, giving a specific question.
The other question takes the assumption that users on SO are not nice to beginners, while the new question asks if the user in the wrong place, or something else is wrong. As Skeet answers, this time it's not the community not to be nice, but the new user who used a phrase that should have been avoided.

@kiamlaluno I don't see a link to a question...

@Chris Well, Skeet found the question in question. :-)

@jadarnel27 Sorry, I meant "a link to the Stack Overflow question that prompted the Meta SO question" :)

@Chris Haha, my misunderstanding then. It's actually the only question the person has asked on SO.

2:30 AM
Still, the difference is between "we need to be nice to beginners," and "am I in the right place, or isn't Stack Overflow for me?"

So it's not too tough to find =)

@kiamlaluno Ah, true. Still, I can understand why random closed it.
I sounds a bit whiny

@Chris I can understand that more questions like those could be boring, but there are other questions that are kept open, and they repeat things said in other questions, even if for different specific cases.

@kiamlaluno Fair enough
I don't feel strongly enough about it to cast a reopen vote at the moment, but I'll consider it

@Chris Thank you, Sir. :-)

BEEFY MIRACLE

3:28 AM
@YiJiang I was going to work on the election page tonight, and figured I'd port things over to the new version of the API while I was at it. Do you mind if I go ahead and register the API key? I didn't want to hijack your project or anything, heh.

3:46 AM
@TimStone No it's fine

Alright, cool

No significant changes to the current API 1.x routes, right?

Nothing too significant, I don't think

4:37 AM
@TimStone it keeps crashing, so annoying

Hmm

trying to install 5.7 beta
also, I flushed all my chat history, so those are probably gone, will see

Hullo
@jcolebrand , how's it going?

shittily as you can see
but the surgery was a rousing success
In addendum, I am trying to get some stuff together for a class, and talk to some people on skype, so ... ttyl

@kiamlaluno It all ends up in the same place. For a roundabout trip, There are no stupid questions - or are there? and SO is not novice friendly

@balpha Seems like the mobile CSS is also not minified, as a heads up.

Q: Tag merge request: [underscore] into [underscore.js]

Alexander Wenzowskiunderscore Underscore is a JavaScript library that adds functional programming to JavaScript underscore.js Underscore is a utility-belt library for JavaScript that provides a lot of the functional programming support that you would expect in Prototype.js (or Ruby), but without exte...

I'm considering just going through and fixing them, but it'd be a pretty visible effort. Just wondering if anyone supports/opposes that.
I'd update the [underscore] tag wiki to say it should only be used for the underscore character ("_")
And then selectively re-tag questions appropriately.

6:26 PM
Nevermind, I think we should just push for a retag + synonym:

A: Tag merge request: [underscore] into [underscore.js]

Rob HruskaI agree and propose a mass retag + a synonym: underscore -> underscore.js hammar (from question comments): Note that there are several questions tagged underscore which do not refer to the JS library. From a quick glance, I see some referring to the character _ and some refer to it as th...
