Wow, this Swing code I wrote is so incomprehensibly bad. puts rewrite on todo list

4 hours later…

Oh, @mootinator, you really are here. I thought my slow connection was playing tricks on me.

No, my short attention span is playing tricks on you.

I did indeed write the aforescreenshotted (no a word?) comment, but I claim no responsibility for missing commas and the like. I was tired.

Heh.

5:02 AM
Spaghetti code would be earthworm code.
@RebeccaChernoff - Who is the guy in the "I don't always test my code..." picture?
doesn't know his memes well enough.

Who is that guy? --- ^

An ARM processor would be a WING processor? shrug

@mootinator Good call. Added to the comment.

5:06 AM
@TimStone Got it, thanks. :-D

So, what came first, Chuck Norris facts, or the Dos Equis guy?

I think that it's hilarious that they reference Chuck Norris facts in the Total Gym commercial.

I think its hilarious that modern webpages that use AJAX techniques don't work over a 40kpbs connection.

I think it's funny that my body tries to step down to get out of the house I grew up in in the dark, even though there hasn't been a step there in years.

5:16 AM
@mootinator Wow, yea. Talk about muscle memory. Although - what happened to the step? why is it not there anymore? Landscape changes or interior changes?

@Moshe They took out the concrete stairs outside and put in a wooden deck.

Ah. So it's neither interior, nor landscaping. It's exterior.

Anyone happen to know the magic dance I need to do to link my Careers profile with my other SE accounts?
It managed to find several of my answers without me linking the account. :/

@jtbandes Hmm, someone else reported this problem earlier.
Presumably you signed up for your Careers profile with the same OpenID and everything as your normal site login, yeah? Could be that there's a bug pulling that information at the moment, I suppose.

Q: career profile: unable to link my 200+ rep account (though answers link fine)

gnat(Check for questions with similar titles: done. Screen shot: provided below.) When editing my career profile I am unable to add a link to my 200+ rep StackExchange account. This looks like a bug because I expect to be able to do that. In the case if that matters, account I'm trying to link is ...

Ah, yeah. The account information on my Careers profile hasn't updated. I suspect the account sync process is just failing. Hopefully they'll patch it up tomorrow.

6:05 AM
@TimStone Aha, yeah, same issue, thanks for finding that.

Aye

I'd guess this is also related to why I don't have any invitations yet?
(I'm over 150 completeness already)

Hmm, it could be, but I'm not sure.

That or I'll just have to wait. But I would have thought the invites would appear as soon as I got over 150

1 hour later…
7:16 AM
@balpha Pssh, you and your compression logic are no match for a table full of numbers!

TEH NUMBAZ, I BEAT DEM!

Should I go open a bug report lambasting you for not minifying the main Sketchy CSS file now? ;)

it's not?

indeed :\

7:23 AM
I thought it was odd, but Rebecca just shrugged at me.

it's not a huge deal, but still it should be

nods

5 hours later…

@Sathya can I ask you once again?
Jun 15 at 16:35, by balpha
@Sathya would you compare download speeds for http://sstatic.stackexchange.netdna-cdn.com/js/full.js and http://sstatic2.stackexchange.netdna-cdn.com/js/full.js for me?
hong kong is definitely active now

12:58 PM
@balpha checkin..
> sstatic: latency 257ms, full 680ms sstatic2 latency:600ms full: 1.2s
@balpha

ugh

ugh is... right :P

did you do several tries?

yep, ~ 10 times

hmm :\ Okay, thanks once more!

1:09 PM
no problem, must be frustrating for you.

3 hours later…
3:47 PM
Hmm, my BLT has been ruined by bad tomatoes, boo.

FedEx or UPS?

DHL

Oh, sorry, I won't associate myself with DHL after they tricked me with their stupid "We'll deliver the package to your post office, who will then deliver it to you one day later than necessary" nonsense.

@TimStone I live in a small town, the only ones which don't do that are UPS and Purolator. And they only come once a week.
So the day later post office penalty is small by comparison.

3:53 PM
Hm, I'd imagine so.
Here the truck basically has to drive by my house on the way to the post office, so it annoys me a bit.

Hah.

Q: Increasing character through buying xbox

GuyI really want a game console. However, my father is making me write an essay on how the xbox will make me a better person. He says I need three points, do you have any ideas? Has buying/owning/playing a game console increased your character in some way? If so, how?

lol

2 hours later…
6:23 PM
@balpha An extraordinarily bad case of picking a picture for inlining a wikipedia article: http://t.co/JcX5LOQ
he has a point...

7:03 PM
@balpha Wow, whoops. How does the image selection work, anyway? That one is somewhere in the middle of the article.

7:35 PM
just the largest one

A: Where does the chat get the thumbnail on Wikipedia links from?

balphaIt just picks the largest (to be precise, tallest) image on the page as returned by Wikipedia's API – and that particular image, even if only displayed as a tiny thumbnail, has a height of 2906 pixels. In most cases, the largest image is a good representation of the Wikipedia article (I te...

7:50 PM
Ah ha

so for the epic badge, do you have to just exceed the rep cap (e.g. score > 200 in any way) 50 times, or do you have to exceed it by upvotes alone 50 times?

3 hours later…
10:33 PM
Will spelling out AM or PM come back to bite me later?
I've got a method called - (NSString *) AntemeridianOrPostMeridian, which returns AM or PM, based on the time.
Should I just call it "AMorPM"?

11:24 PM
@Moshe Why would it do that?

11:37 PM
@mootinator No idea, that's why I ask.

If the bite you're referring to is from the maintenance programmer who has to type that method name more than once, yes.

@MichaelPetrotta Oh, hey! Heheh, yea, but Xcode does the autocomplete dance, so we should be OK.

I know, but still.

@MichaelPetrotta How's the iOS dev going?
I'm wondering if my app's memory usage pattern is normal. My app is peaking at 1.55 MB, but in the beginning it seems to plateau, jump a little, plateau, jump, plateau, jump , plateau and then finally, it stops at about 1.55 MB.

Not started yet, unfortunately.

11:42 PM
Oh. :-(

Got sidelined on Windows dev for the moment. But that's cool, it's new stuff to me.

WinPhone?

Nope, straight Windows. Don't see getting into WP7 any time soon, as much as I'd like to.

Ah, ok.
Compiler, Compiler, oh why must you take just long enough to be annoying, yet not long enough to let me do anything?

How's the music-player-with-bookmarks coming?

11:45 PM
@MichaelPetrotta On hold. Along with the user script safari mobile. And the POS app. :-) I have since learned how to use Core Data and plan on finishing that one eventually.
Thank Gd, I landed a contract job for an app, so that and this personal project take front stage for now. I do want to do it though.

Cool. I wasn't really serious, it was just an idea that might be cool.

@MichaelPetrotta I was working on something like that earlier. I just got busy with paying jobs.
I'm now profiling my new rewrite of this app, comparing with the original.

All right, time to grab at least a few hours of sun today.
Good luck with the work.

@MichaelPetrotta Enjoy, thanks.
Hrm... Seems like the older one was slightly more efficient, but I'm not convinced yet...
I'm not seeing run-away memory leaks, so I don't think its reason for concern right now. It's only 400KB anyway.
And the new one uses Core Data, which might account for the difference.
