Dial 911 for help?

4:04 AM
Hmm, I thought making a bad joke would return this place to normal, but it seems not. :P

It would seem so

4:59 AM
Anyone here know about rules for ads on Apple.SE?
Can I advertise paid apps?
Also, @Jin, next time you're around, I seem to have missed the discussion about the design for Judaism.SE and I'm interested in sharing my two cents as well. :-)
Ok, night.

@Moshe Yes. There's a specific rule against this for Stack Overflow's community ads for the obvious reason that advertisers can easily purchase ad space there, but on the smaller sites that don't run out-of-house ads you're permitted to put an ad for something that involves a fee.
(and obviously if the community isn't receptive to that they just won't vote up your answer; I'll also source Grace Note for support of what I said above)

Not sure where to assk this, but don't want to make a new question on meta ...
Is it considered okay to edit other's answers, adding more details? Or is that a bit too much?

1:18 PM
@Szabolcs Yep, that's actually encouraged. Check out this answer (or that whole page, really).

I'm also wondering how come that both a moderator and a high-rep user showed up within minutes after that question was asked, even though neither of them are -regulars. Is there some automatic filter alterting them for messy looking questions?

Yes, the "/review" page does that.
@Szabolcs Check out: stackoverflow.com/review
Particularly the "low-quality posts" tab.

@jadarnel27 Oh, I've seen that but somehow never noticed the "low quality posts" tab before!

1:33 PM
@Szabolcs Haha, I didn't notice any of the tabs for a while. It is a good way to find posts that need editing, though.

2:06 PM
@TimStone How do I go about purchasing ad space? How do I find out what that costs?

Though I'm not entirely sure if you want/can afford to buy space (admittedly I have no idea how much it costs) on the Trilogy?

in Careers my 'completeness' is 151/210 yet I still have no invitations.

4:25 PM
nvm

A: No Careers invitations

davoutLooks like invitations are awarded manually. Wait for some more time.

@TimStone I think I missed the joke. :p
Why is it bad for Won't to edit the FAQ?
Oh, nevermind
Facepalm
911 votes, I see.
Just out of curiosity, does any country other than the U.S. use 911 for emergencies?

4:44 PM
Canada :P

There are emergencies in Canada?
looks surprised
Wait, there are phones in Canada?

looks even more surprised

Pardon the excess of -bumps. I noticed I was 7 edits from Strunk and White, so I decided get it right now by adding missing index links.

Employee only has two e's in it.
Also, magic strings are bad. But I already knew that.
Resharper is dealing with it.

9:22 PM
@mootinator looks like 3 to me

Haha

@NickT Er, at the end of it.

9:39 PM
@DavidFullerton /sigh taxes...

I'm trying to submit a form to an aspx webpage from an app.
Instead of a form, I want to use an HTTP Request.
Can any .NET programmer shed some light?

A: StackExchange credentials not removed on logout, allowing insecure re-login

Jeremy BanksArjan points out that logging in requires you to explicitly select an OpenID provider1. This is true, but this is not made obvious to the user. Consider a user who is not particularly tech savvy nor familiar with the concept single sign-on (except for that one time they used Twitter to login to y...

@Moshe yes, it's called a POST
Do you really not understand how the web works? And yet you write web apps?

@jcolebrand I do, but here's my question.
The ASPX is generating the forms on the fly.
I'm not quite sure what script is receiving the request and what it expects the variables to be called.
@jcolebrand I was planning to use a POST, but again, not sure what to name the data so that the receiving script knows what it's looking at.

Anonymous
@Moshe How about copying the names from the form elements in the page? ctl00$ctl00$bodycontent$subBody$TextBox1 and such.

9:53 PM
@JeremyBanks that's exactly right

@JeremyBanks Do those change ever?

You make the POST once yourself to capture the form in Chrome, then use those field names
@Moshe if they rewrite the page and move stuff around, yes

@jcolebrand No, are they automatically generated each time a browser loads the script?

@Moshe if it's a form with a post, then it's either explicitly defined in the <form> tag or it's the same page.
@Moshe each time the server generates the page? Yes
quit thinking like a browser, think like a server or a developer

Lol, ok.

9:55 PM
@jcolebrand ASPX generates new form element names for each user?

@JeremyBanks nope

Anonymous
Oh, I misunderstood you.

@JeremyBanks out of curiosity, why did you ask that?

How's this strategy?

Anonymous
I interpreted "automatically generated each time a browser loads the script?" as "generated uniquely each time a browser loads the script?"

9:57 PM
Load the page using GET. Scrape the field names. Send em back with the right data.

@JeremyBanks a) that was Moshe's comment, b) the server does generate it each time on the fly (except in the case of caching)
@Moshe yes, very reasonable thing to do (one might say, the only proper way to do it)
also allows you to navigate any cookies or hidden fields you might need

Anonymous
@Moshe How are you going to identify them more reliably than using their names?

@jcolebrand Ok, cool. :-)

@JeremyBanks who are you talking to?

Anonymous
@jcolebrand Yup, I understand now, thanks.

9:59 PM
@JeremyBanks What do you mean? For scraping? I know the general idea of what the page looks like. I have a good idea of the organization and how often they will be changing this. It's one of two forms on the page, and it's not the first one.

Anonymous
@Moshe I guess it is that simple. :P

Yup.

ok, going back on lurk. Ping me via TimStone if you need me again. Or on skype.

Ok, cool, thanks @jcolebrand.

grr email, y u no work leik SE posts/comments/messages where you can edit them within 2-5 minutes
this site has engendered absolutely awful habits

That, and (especially) editing other people's content.
Nowadays, when I see something on the internet with errors, I involuntarily go for the edit link.
Which, unfortunately, isn't often there elsewhere.

I often find myself looking for an upvote arrow on email messages

@Kevin our only hope then is that SE takes over the entire internet
