3:46 AM
@GeorgeMarian hi! are you around?

1 hour later…
5:08 AM
@Trufa I am now. =/

Hmm

Indeed.

nods
> There's now pseudo-onebox support for Stack Exchange comments through the /ob command. To easily get URLs for comment oneboxing, please see the SE Modifications script. – Tim Stone 2h ago
(FYI, with live demo!)

Ah, cool. I really should get around to checking out that script some time...

It's gotten rather sizable, heh.

5:20 AM
heh

Or perhaps "feature-packed" is a better way to describe it ;)

There you go.
I find it interesting that I get the odd Twitter follower here and there, even though I haven't tweeted in a while.
Seemingly legitimate accounts, at that.

Hmm, interesting. Do you have a link anywhere, or people are just randomly finding their way to you through some other means?

I don't think so. Nothing comes to mind. I've been saving my SO/SE profile for a day I have the energy to write a bio and for the day I finally launch my blog.
Which is slowly drawing closer, by the way.

Heheh, yeah, I finally got around to putting something in my profile here, but it's hardly anything interesting.
Ah, very nice. I think you mentioned at some point you had opted to go with WordPress, yeah?

5:26 AM
I need to increase my web profile, so I will be getting to all that soon.
Yeah, I'm going with WordPress.
I had considered writing my own, but then it'll never launch. LOL
Right now, I'm doing research on SSL certs. I don't want the wrong info to be publicly available.

Yeah, I'm afraid to think of all the things that are on my "I'd really like to finish coding that" list. :D
Good stuff. It's a shame that they're rather expensive, though I haven't gone shopping for one recently.

Yeah, my list is of things I'd like to do is a mile long. Hence that domain name. :)

Oh right, a domain name...that's also on my to-do list.

There are some cheap certs out there. From the likes of Comodo. /shudder
I have a couple free ones (for a year) available to me through my host.

5:29 AM
Oh, that's a pretty good deal.

I think those certs are only $9/year.
They're only domain-validated, hence much cheaper.

@YiJiang Hahah, tsk tsk.

@YiJiang LOL
HA! PornView shows up in the Ubuntu 10.10 Software Center.
> Slideshows allow for unattended presentation of images for hands-free viewing.

Hahahah

Oh, BTW, here's the bio of my latest (random) Twitter follower:
> Gravy Rainbow blog presents funny, odd and bizarre finds from around the internet. Follow GR for daily humor and interesting articles, pictures and videos!
I wonder what I did to attract her attention. :)

5:44 AM
For some reason, I find "Gravy Rainbow" a bit disturbing.

LOL
Fair enough.
For some reason, I just thought of the scene from Family Guy where Brian is chasing the "gravy train" chuck wagon, trying to catch it.

:D

@GeorgeMarian hi!
Are you still here? :)

Alright. I think it's time to get horizontal. My leg is not liking me in this seated position.
@Trufa For now. :) What's up?

@GeorgeMarian just did
@GeorgeMarian did I dream or do you know about wordpress?

5:54 AM
@Trufa Nice. A laptop and/or a netbook is high on my list of things to buy once my financial situation improved enough.
@Trufa I know enough to be dangerous. :)
I've done a little bit of coding on a site with a custom WP theme.

@GeorgeMarian hehe quick question then if you don't mind

At some point, I will create a custom theme for the blog I'm planning to launch.

do you recommend any syntax highlighting?

For now, I'm going to settle for someone else's theme, so I can get the thing out the door.
@Trufa If you're going to include code in the posts, yes I recommend it. :)

@GeorgeMarian it is a complicated issue that, but there are some nice ones out there

5:56 AM
As for what specifically, I have no idea.

@GeorgeMarian hehe sorry, yes particularly

I can't think of the name of a package that provides syntax highlighting on Linux. Something starting with a 'G,' I think.

hmm ok, don't worry
but for some reason
the theme I installed is complifcting with the syntax highlter

It's something I should look into, so if I find anything I like, I'll try to remember to let you know.
@Trufa Ah, I see. That can be a pain, for sure.
That said, it can be good experience to track down the issue. :)

@GeorgeMarian yep,
@GeorgeMarian ohh, I sure it might, but I'm as tired as someone can be

5:59 AM
Though, certainly daunting and frustrating, even for an experience programmer.

@GeorgeMarian you've said it

@Trufa Yeah, I know that feeling. Been like that for a while. :)
Well, I'm off. For some reason I have a desire to watch Monk. LOL

I think I'll pay them a visit

Apparently, this episode is about a garbage strike. It should be interesting.
@Trufa Yeah, definitely a good idea.
g'night everyone o/

@GeorgeMarian good night, thanks anyway!

8 hours later…
1:51 PM
Some sort of strange technical problem has the English television channel broadcasting the Malay election coverage, and the Chinese channel covering the Tamil version

3 hours later…
Wes
4:39 PM
@TylerChacha time for some more random activity?

4 hours later…
Wes
8:53 PM
Wow it wasn't even this quiet on thanksgiving
If you guys had been here to ask I wouldn't have had to ask this silly question

Q: Didn't recieve Altruist badge

WesMaybe I'm confused about the criteria for receiving it. I put some bounty on a feature request that I thought should be implemented. However as the time was close to running out and the number of upvotes had ceased to increase I thought I'd just award the bounty. I also awarded the bounty on sta...

Btw ChrisF gave his answer as a comment but I prompted him to give as an answer so if he was right I can accept it.

@Wes Define here? :)

Wes
Well making you presence known. By leaving status updates or ya know even, god forbid, talking to each other @GeorgeMarian

points to the icons in the upper right
:)

Wes
Yours was grey

Leaving status updates would require the user script.

Wes
9:05 PM
Do you really think that all 8 or so people with icons in the top right are present
@GeorgeMarian I meant just.

@Wes Yes, put I am, technically, here. I may not be actively participating, but that's a different issue. :)
I'm just being pedantic, for the fun of it.

Wes
You do know what I mean though Georgie?

The point being, don't assume that the gray icons mean that we're not here. Ask the question and you may just get an answer.

Wes
yeah okay I get that. But usually when it says last message was X hours ago. (And the last message was pretty much me asking where everyone is.) Then I assume people aren't available.
so do you work on a sunday then

Don't assume that inactivity necessarily means that people aren't present. The two aren't that tightly correlated. It may simply mean that no one has anything to say. :)
@Wes What does that have to do with this?

Wes
9:10 PM
cause i'm confused It's not sunday is it

Well, it's Saturday, but I'm not working. So, I don't understand the point of the question.

Wes
No well it's just that your always here even if grey. so I was wondering if you check from work or home. assuming the two are different. It could have just as easily been @TimStone or @RebeccaChernoff I asked.
Possibly Jin too but I'm not sure I've ever seen him actually post anything.

Well, I'm not actually always around. Though, I do spend a great deal of time in front of my computer. So, there's a very good chance that even if my icon is gray, that I am actually around. If there is little activity in the room or I'm not actually participating, the window is usually minimized.
If I were employed, I likely wouldn't be around while at work. That would depend on the employer, though. So, in that situation, there would be more times that a gray icon would mean that I'm not actually around.
Well, that was interesting. That's the first time I've had a cigar randomly flare up into a flame (after having lit it).

Wes
@GeorgeMarian sorry I didn't know that when I asked

shrug No worries, I get by. :)

Wes
9:21 PM
okay I'm needing to go away from keyboard for an indeterminate amount of time

@Wes see ya later

Wes
see ya
Wow back a hell of a lot quicker than I thought.

Wes
Toddler just went asleep. As soon as I brought him to our bedroom.
Thats a first.

Heh. Good deal.

Wes
9:28 PM
He's not well poor thing at the moment.
Typically my wife goes for the weekend (speaking of which I've a lot of cleaning to do tonight) and he gets sick.

Aww, that sucks.

Wes
Yeah happened the previous time too.
So are you a programmer by trade then?

That I am.

Wes
What languages / type of programming? Also related is your employment status voluntary?

Currently, I mostly use PHP, MySQL and the occasional JavaScript. I know a bit of Perl as well and recently began learning Python.
No, my employment status isn't exactly voluntary.

Wes
9:38 PM
Ah okay. mmm don't know too many people employing on the lamp stack at the mo.

Thankfully, the job market seems to be improving. So, I think things are looking up on that front.

Wes
Java I do. But you'd have to come to europe.
Gibraltar to be more specific

That said, if I can find enough freelance work to make ends meet I wouldn't be adverse to doing that; at least for a little while.

Wes
You have a portfolio?

That's been part of the issue. I have a portfolio of one. :)
I'm working on putting up a blog to increase my web presence and improve my chances.

Wes
9:43 PM
Yeah you need a portfolio. Could you contrubute to some open source project for a bit.
Helps your rep

Yeah, I've considered that. I been having trouble finding one though. I have considered the phpMyAdmin project. However, I don't ever use it, so I don't know how motivated I would be.

Wes
Mambo drupal joomla wordpress. Their the main ones I know. Don't know if they take submissions though.

I should look into WordPress. That's what I will be using for my blog and I have begun doing a bit of WP coding.

Wes
Hell even write a few themes if your into the graphical side of things. Its something to show an employer.

Wes
9:50 PM
double post?
Had to restart my browser.

Sorta. I butter fingered pretty bad there.
So, as I was trying to saying. I'm not great at the web design side of things, but I am planning on writing a custom theme for my blog.

Wes
A plugin then?
Something that sits into SO? calls the API perhaps
That should be something you like

Yeah, good ideas.

Wes
Okay off topic
how do I configure alternatives in ubuntu
I want to change XULrunner to point to xulrunner-2.0 instead of 1.9.x
do I just change the symlink?

There's an application for that.

Wes
9:55 PM
<pre>wesley@ubuntu:/usr/bin$ which xulrunner
/usr/bin/xulrunner
wesley@ubuntu:/usr/bin$ lslart /usr/bin/xulrunner
lslart: command not found
wesley@ubuntu:/usr/bin$ ls -lart /usr/bin/xulrunner
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 27 2011-05-05 17:56 /usr/bin/xulrunner -> /etc/alternatives/xulrunner
wesley@ubuntu:/usr/bin$ ls -lart /etc/alternatives/xulrunner
xulrunner xulrunner-flashplugin
xulrunner-addons-flashplugin
wesley@ubuntu:/usr/bin$ ls -lart /etc/alternatives/xulrunner
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 24 2011-05-05 17:56 /etc/alternatives/xulrunner -> /usr/bin/xulrunner-1.9.2
Sugar and spice and all things nice

LOL
What version of Ubuntu?

Wes
10.10

Try the "Alternatives Configurator" under System > Administration.

Wes
Don't see one

Hmm, it may need to be installed then.

Wes
9:59 PM
Does it just change a symlink I'm pretty weak with linux.

Yes, probably. But, I'm not certain.

Wes
But it looks to me If I rm /etc/alternatives/xulrunner and put the symlink into the new one it should work?

That's sounds like it should work.

Wes
found it sudo update-alternatives --config xulrunner (Dunno how to post code here)
Anyway I was just trying to give you ideas before.

nod And it's appreciated. :)

Wes
10:03 PM
If you do a really cool WP plugin. I'd love to know
Do you know about XUL? at all?

Not really. I know of it and high-level idea of how it works.

Wes
Just thought I'd try it out. I've installed it per askubuntu.com/questions/41057/install-xulrunner-2-0 now I'm trying to figure out if there is IDE support
any of those look any good?
Also swapping back topic again. The problem I precieve with PHP is the perception of PHP with employers.

MozCreator sounds familiar. Probably came across it while researching the same topic a while back.

Wes
Ideally eclipse plugin for me. Cause I'm so darned used to eclipse

@Wes How do you mean? If a company is using PHP, they will be looking for PHP devs. :)

Wes
10:16 PM
Yes I mean in the companies who just want devs.
If you code in waves hands arround c# you can often find a job in a java shop.
honestly
but if you code PHP....

Well, if they have a clue, I don't think PHP itself should be an issue. Assuming that they're just looking for devs, with no specific language requirement, they should have a clue.

Wes
Yeah.

@Wes Fair enough. PHP is not the only language I've used, though it's what I'm using most often currently.
I learned Java in college, though I haven't used it professionally, nor recently. I've done a bit of C#, though I don't put that on my resume as it's not enough to warrant the mention.

Wes
I like it. Or liked it a few years ago when I really knew some. My collegues would kill me.

I have done a fair amount of work in Perl. Of course, we can't forget JavaScript.

Wes
10:18 PM
Is there anything more vain than a java dev?

C# is decent.
@Wes LOL

Wes
Whats perl like. I don't swap languages often.

It's, well, interesting. Some call it a write-only language. There are many ways to do the same thing and the syntax can be a bit daunting.

Wes
Its technically a scripting language?

It's great for dealing with text, good support for RegEx. However, there's a lot of symbology to learn.
@Wes Yes, though there are ways to compile it and technically, it's compiled before being executed. (Somewhat like Python, but I'm not certain where the compiled code is placed.)

Wes
10:27 PM
Okay cool.
My laptops dying. I know why. I need to clean it. (physically)
can't be arsed.

Got some dust bunny build-up, eh?

Wes
yeah I'm pretty sure. It slows right down.
I thought you were active on SO as a contributer.

Not so much recently. I spend most of my time on Money.se and Programmers.SE.
I do need to get active on SO again, though.

Wes
I should say on SE
Hey this seems like a good idea to me

Q: StackExchange design problem: advanced questions get lost

luquiTake for example the javascript tag on StackOverflow. There is such a flurry of beginner questions that those of us who know the language very well and are interested in answering subtle, advanced questions stop following that tag. It would be nice to be able to subscribe to the "hard" questions...

@Wes Interesting.

Wes
10:45 PM
I better start cleaning its 12:45 am

makes an 11th hour joke
