Does anybody happen to know a simple introduction to taxation for employees in the US, namely California? I need to get an understanding how much will be left if a job ad promises a salary of $xx,xxx per year (approximately, of course)
And on a similar note, an introduction to finding housing (is rent usually inclusive or exclusive of which utilities, what is the average size of the deposit, what is the default notice period etc.)

sounds like someone's moving

8:04 AM
@balpha yeah, planning to!
To the bay area if it works out

Just beware, Jeff is known to egg Meta trolls' houses in the middle of the night, and he'll be a neighbor!

@balpha Actually, Berkeley is one of the areas I'm looking at, so I can egg his house! :)
I want to live somewhere not far from a bit of nature, but also not far from a quick way to get into SF - Berkeley looks great for that. It's a project with many variables, we will see how it works out!

Q: Help us test the advantages of using a CDN

balphaWe're looking at putting our static content – JavaScript, CSS, images, etc. – on a CDN. Currently we're serving this content from http://sstatic.net. While this works great, it means that I (sitting in Berlin) have to get my CSS from all the way across the Atlantic, because the serve...

Is there an existing MSO post about how good a suggested edit has to be before you approve it?

2:25 PM
@PopularDemand I think Benjol made a guide post of sorts. I'm not sure if that's what you were looking for though.
Oh, maybe not, that question came at it from the suggested-edit editor's end.

@Reno Egad!

4:03 PM
Huh. That's quite the comparison they pulled out there, hahah.
Also, it seems that the future of computing is @waffles

@TimStone Ahahahaha :P

I have a feeling that pouring syrup on my processors will end badly though.

Well, it'll only be a nanolitre, what harm can it do...

4:20 PM
Good point. Nothing like the sweet smell of maple drifting through your exhaust fans to really perk you up in the morning.

4:31 PM
Hmm, seems the CDN wins by ~24 ms.
To think, SO has been wasting milliseconds of my life this whole time! UNACCEPTABLE.

@TimStone How many page views have you made? Thousands? Hundreds of thousands? Millions? That 24ms adds up quickly

It seems my only saving grace is that I'm not a majority of the other people who submitted results. :P

A: Help us test the advantages of using a CDN

jleedevCleveland, Ohio: sstatic: 24ms latency, 64ms total CDN: 15ms latency, 43ms total

Does that guy live inside a backbone?

lol

6:19 PM
Where are the servers of this CDN located?

They are everywhere

@ircmaxell Looks behind me Oh hai CDN!

:-P

He's given me this weird envelope thingy... let's see... oh, its my JavaScript! Hooray!

@balpha Read it and weep:

6:29 PM
Cool, can you download the internet for me? I expect delivery in an hour.

@mmyers !@#$%

@mmyers Clearly Photoshopped.

That's at Google. Now we know Jon Skeet's secret.

You know, that percentile reading there, the "Faster than 99% of the US", reminded me that when I was in Primary school, my height percentile came out larger than 100. Which, I don't know, what does that mean?
I suppose I'm taller than more than 100% of the population? But that's not possible, is it?

Depends. Are you human?
You don't have to answer that if you don't want to.

6:35 PM
But how did they know!? I didn't tell anyone... :sobs:

@balpha Sure, but what medium do you want it delivered on?

just print it out and mail it to me, I'm old-fashioned

Q: Why are there no girls here?

nawfalIf moderators, fellow members find this irking, please forgive me. On a serious note, why dont we find female members at SO? Is the colourful GUI not pleasing for them, no it cant be. or they dont require help? or they aren't willing to help others? or general unwillingness to be a part of intern...

sighs

Paging @RebeccaChernoff

LOL

@YiJiang She won't be able to respond, since it seems she isn't here.

Or you know, just close it as dupe of the old- Ah, @balpha's got it already

Aww, I was coming up with a witty comment before I closed as a dupe, but @balpha beat me to it.

7:01 PM
you can still have the witty comment, though

Point @balpha

Hmm, I feel like it shouldn't take hours to get a temporary password..

The British are so very weird. There's a Spartacus reference in there, but who is his wife?

@YiJiang en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… that's where it comes from.

7:37 PM
I am Spartacus!

@YiJiang It's Life of Brian, I believe.

7:59 PM
@RebeccaChernoff In reference to that question, either I don't understand how merging works, or the tag was merged more than once (if I followed correctly). Granted, I agree with the merge and I think that the arguments against it are unconvincing, but it admittedly does kind of strike me the wrong way that whoever did it continued to act on it without just saying "Look, these are bad tags" to end the issue.
On an unrelated note, someone is making some sort of hammering noise somewhere outside, but I can't find them to kick them in the shins and make them stop, argh.

@TimStone Sorry, I'll make it stop

@TimStone what do you mean? There were 2 original tags, 2 merges were done.

@RebeccaChernoff I thought he tried to add the tag to other questions after the fact and it was merged again?
@ircmaxell Ah ha! :P

@TimStone How freaked out would you be if it really did stop just then

Ah, it seems that it's one of the neighbours that I like, I suppose a shin kicking would be too extreme.
Hahah. Now that you mention it...It does seem to have stopped.

8:05 PM
@TimStone A user edited it out, not realizing the meta discussion

Ah, OK. He deleted his comments, so I couldn't remember what he had said anyway.

@TimStone I remember seeing that question when it was new. Didn't read it too carefully, but the title seemed reasonable. What happened there? I've never seen a list of deleted answers like the one under that post.

@PopularDemand We should probably not get into it, because @RebeccaChernoff will blame me :P
But yeah, I was pretty surprised too.

@TimStone If you don't want to get into it, that's fine, but don't pretend like it'll make the difference between getting blamed or not.
I mean, have you learned nothing from your time in The Tavern?

I just spent 0 in the Apple store. Shame it's like for like. I wanted a white iPhone.

8:14 PM
Good point.
@PopularDemand It was just a typical "tag got merged without needing a Meta request" event, so lack of discussion + people fiercely protective of their area of expertise ended in whatever word you want to use to describe the question+answers+comments.

@TimStone Fair enough. Also, my last messages were in jest, if that didn't, uh, translate.

My English to English translator is out of whack.

@TimStone That's like screwing up the toString() method of the String class. Impressive, sir!

bows

8:29 PM

@TimStone when I shook my fists at you the other day, was it not clear that I was already blaming you? (:

@RebeccaChernoff I was banking on whoever it was that said it was unfair to blame me when I wasn't here ;)

Question of the day: Which calculator is correct?

@ircmaxell The TI-30X.

Q: What is the answer of: 6÷2(1+2) = ?

Ryan SammutHi Guys, I have this debate, whether the answer of 6รท2(1+2) is 9 or 1. public class bodmas { public static void main(String [] args) { float i = 6/2*(1+2); System.out.println(i); } } Java returns 9, but that's because I cannot remove the * sign. If I put this into my Casio fx-82MS c...

8:39 PM
@TimStone Truly impressive, sir!

bows again

Actually the accepted answer is wrong. It's not interpreting grouping, but mis-interpreting order of operations
OOO goes highest to lowest, then left to right. So for equal precidence (/ and *), it's evaluated l2r

Hi I've a question on etiquette (maybe ethics) with regards to answering a question on SO & don't know where to ask, so maybe someone here could help.
A few weeks ago I posted a question on SO regarding a threading issue I was seeing, but I was an unregistered user. Later on I registered but even though I used the same email address my account never got associated with my previous questions.
Anyhow in the meantime Microsoft have confirmed that there is a bug in the threading implementation I was using & I feel that its quite important to let other users know (in case they spend a month tearing their hair out trying to figure out why under very heavy load this breaks).
So should I answer my question under my registered user and log back in as an unregistered user (which I'm still allowed to do?) and mark as an accpted answer. BTW - sorry for the essay

Perhaps try to fix the association first

Yeah, go ahead. Also click on the "flag" link under the question and let a moderator know you need the two accounts merged.

8:46 PM
ok - thanks - I'm v new on SO so don't know my way around

No problem. Thanks for coming by and asking!

Wes
9:18 PM
@TimStone Are you guys still going on about that? Assuming its the same one as yesterday

Well, I had to get caught up since I was away for two days. :P

Wes
Ahh okay. So why are you being blames?
Do you guys never want to answer a question with "My Goodness! A question about reputation On Meta. I never thought I'd see the day"
or something equally as unhelpful and sarcastic

Wes
9:58 PM
Anyone actually there?

shushes the crickets

Wes
hey @Shog9 whats up?

Not much; logging in to troll th' metas

Wes
Its quiet in here on on the parent site.

Everyone's either hungover from yesterday, or busy getting hungover for tomorrow ;-)

Wes
:) probably. I'd better be off to bed.

10:45 PM
Anyone here?

Depends on whether or not I'll regret admitting that I am. ;)

You have courage Master Tim. I laud your bravery.

Happy hour, huh?

Indeed. Like any good tavern.

Went to the Apple Store today. Got my iPhone and earbuds replaced. Didn't cost a dime, b"h.

10:48 PM
Phenomenal. what do you have on tap?

My first time at that location.
Then transferred to the wrong train on the way back.
So, yay. In a cab back home.

@Moshe Ah, nice. What was wrong with your iPhone?
@ErickRobertson Good question, I'm more on the drinking end than the serving end.

Power button was "sticky" @TimStone

@Moshe Ah, you're on th emove

But they didn't let me change for the white one.

10:50 PM
@TimStone What are you drinking tonight?

@Erick, yep I am.
I'm drinking grape juice tonight. My version of wine.

I'm out of Oberon, so I'll have to find something else.
