Q: Limitation on submition question, is it an explicit request to create a new account?

JackWhen I was trying to ask a new question in Stack Overflow, the following message has been shown: Oops! Your question couldn't be submitted because: Sorry, you are only allowed to ask 50 questions in a 30 day period Is it an explicit request to create a new account?

Wes
Message is too long

A: Limitation on submition question, is it an explicit request to create a new account?

WesNo it's not an "explicit request" to create a new account. It's a warning that your behaviour in asking so many questions is generally undesireable. It's not a flag against you per se but rather everyone asking so many questions. It means that you probably should be doing some more research bef...

Q: 50 question per month limit?

BlankmanI get a message: Sorry, you are only allowed to ask 50 questions in a 30 day period Why is there a question limit? 50/month is just not enough :)

Q: Please warn about exceeding 50 question limit prior to asking a new question

TomIt's a shame to type out an entire question, press post and then: Sorry, you are only allowed to ask 50 questions in a 30 day period Could you put some sort of notice on the page itself before submitting it to let you know the question won't be going through? Or perhaps tell me how many qu...

Q: Let's have 150 question cap in 3 months instead of current 50 question cap every month

PacerierHi all, why is there a cap of 50 questions per month in stackoverflow.com ? I'm sure 70 is pretty reasonable if you ask me, but 50 questions a month is hardly 2 a day.. Edit: My proposal is to have a cap of 150 questions in 3 months, instead of 50 questions a month. You guys do know when someti...

Q: I can't ask any more questions for a while

TomI know this has been discussed already, but I asked a while ago if I was asking too many questions: Should I stop asking so many questions The general response was: No, I'm not I have more answers than questions My questions are generally of a high quality So I was surprised a few days ago ...

very nice

Priority changed from '3 – Must Fix' to '6 – Fix If Time'.
Date due changed from (No Date) to 8/27/2011 8:00 AM (GMT-05:00).
Yes, I have a feature request assigned as "8.27.2011" due date for something that will mean about 1 hours worth of work

4:11 PM
@drachenstern You can no longer cast votes to undelete a question that a moderator has deleted. So flagging is the only option anymore.

@LanceRoberts ah, I had forgotten about that. Well I'll say this, mod's don't delete stuff like that without reason. who was the mod that closed it?

Wes
@drachenstern huh? So one question that tries to cover the salient points of the above question is acceptable?

@MichaelMrozek Yes, but all the answers could have been migrated. We've been through this whole thing on Meta before about deleting questions with good answers. The answer was migration.
@drachenstern Shog deleted it, but he should have at least migrated the answers if there's going to be one canonical question on it. Though only because the author asked for it to be deleted, otherwise it should have been left up as a dupe stub to answer future questions.

So here's what I know: Shog9 is now part of "the team" and he's been around for a LONG time. I know the workings of the mods (I am one) and I know the workings of the team (I've been around long enough myself) so I know that you're not likely to get a asker-requested mod-deleted question reopened by flagging it to death. But it's a great gesture. I'm just saying, don't hold your breath

Wes
Can you not ping the pople who put in good answers and get them to post on the new one?
minus all the catty comments?

4:19 PM
@Wes therein lies the dilemma, the "catty comments"

Wes
I'll edit the question later if I'm allowed put those points in. I don't have time right now

@RebeccaChernoff Any idea when we can expect the next Town Hall by the way? Like, is there potentially going to be one this month?

Almost have functions down...

Wes
btw stars

I really have to revamp my expression engine...

4:28 PM
> Come back to vote on more answers in 8 hours, or use your 10 remaining question votes now

@drachenstern I have no expectations except those of myself doing the right thing. The new policy of not being able to vote for mod-deleted posts is draconian, and the worst thing they've done to get rid of "community" involvement.

@LanceRoberts yes you do.
You know what, I don't have time for Lance today, so I'll be back at the tavern after a bit.

Did someone poke me?

@TimStone uh, probably?

@RebeccaChernoff OK, I'm just trying to plan accordingly so I can finish my script and stuff. Thanks. :)
@MarcGravell People were making the mistake of doubting you, I think.

4:45 PM
I doubt myself constantly

@MarcGravell I did long ago. @Waffles cleared it up
er, was it @balpha
damnit, it was one of the devs

@balpha :p

That's ok, I got to ping two more people, so it worked out

Oooh, full house. Nice!
@Pekkasothertrollingaccount - I'm looking for books in the field of mobile development or web design. I'm looking mostly to learn German from these books, but a little technical advancement might not hurt.

Q: What question limitation mechanisms are there?

user130657Is there a limit on how many questions in any set time interval? Sub questions. What is the reasoning behind any time based limits there should be? If there are time limits should I open a duplicate account to circumvent them? Sould specific circumstances be taken into account when applying li...

Mods please review or rollback

@drachenstern - In regards to your earlier question, I'm not certain I know what to do with the auth token, but I'm sure it's Googlable. Like I said, I was guessing. If you want to ask your question again, I'll look into it.

@Moshe yeah yeah, that's why I was asking if anyone had a good example ;)

@drachenstern What was your specific question again?

@Moshe hell if I remember. Ask me tonight after 9 your time ;)

Heh. Will be on iPhone then, but sure, if I remember.
Hopefully wrapping up a project today.
Already did the build, waiting for login info...
@TylerChacha - Please link your GitHub project again.
I'd like to see it please.

Wes
bye

5:07 PM
@Wes bye

@Moshe yeah, that's a clever idea!
I think looking at O'Reilly's range and checking whether a specific book is available in German would be a good bet.
Other than that, I'm sure there are good native German books on the field but as said, I have no experience with them

5:31 PM
Does anyone know if table format has been suggested?

@DanielCSobral pray tell what does that mean?

5:44 PM
Some way to format a table in the answer.
Like dokuwiki's ^ and | characters.

Yes it has been, and it's almost universally viewed as too hard to get right 100%

I never had a trouble with dokuwiki, so I don't know what the problem might be.

Q: Github losing revisions?

Mad WombatI work for a small web dev company and we are using private repository in github to keep our code. The way our workflow is organized is that each dev would work on a local repository and do frequent commits, but only push changes to github when the code is working. When a feature/change/fix is re...

Does anyone know what to do with a corrupted file? I got a Hebrew translation but it's appearing garbled. The English text is fine, but just the Hebrew part is corrupted. Is there a character encoding I should be using? I bet it was saved as ASCII on a windows machine...

See, you're asking us things we can't possibly know about
if they didn't do it in Word with Unicode support then I would toss it out (picking on Word because it usually does the right thing no matter what)

Wes
Okay back

I have almost a dozen now..

7:08 PM
Ok. Got it resent. Works well now.
@Tyler the SomeLanguage repo

@balpha ... care to contribute?

A: What question limitation mechanisms are there?

Adam DavisYou can only ask 50 questions in a 30 day period. This was introduced on 29 April 2011, and at the moment of writing it only applies to Stack Overflow, Server Fault and Super User. Beware that deleting existing questions will probably not circumvent this limit, and may actually make things worse.

Wes
hahaha
I was going to come here to ping @balpha too
Also did I do wrong editing that question?

Three-part trilogies are lowercase. Four-part Trilogies are uppercase :)

Wes
@balpha huh?

7:18 PM
So speak slowly and pretend like I'm special
is that 50/30 implemented on meta?

RE: the question, I agree with Hendrik Vogt, but I don't feel like messing around with it at the immediate moment. I'll make a note for later.

Wes
@TimStone what should I do?

not, it's not activated on Meta at the moment

ok thanks

Wes
@balpha is it likely to be? And is the reason to improve question quality?

7:24 PM
I can't imagine that anyone even comes close to hitting that limit on Meta.

Nah, Adam already refuted that possibility

Wes
that was alread mntioned somewhere

we just wanted to note for consistency

\0/ deposited my new computer in the bank. Well most of it anyway.

yatta!

7:28 PM
And guess what Apple released today?
Neeew iMacs!
:-D
Zing.

that have displayport limitations

Huh?

@Moshe I must only be half awake, at first I was sitting here scratching my head trying to figure out how you managed that.

@Moshe heresay I imagine. Someone said something on twitter about it having a new limitation

@drachenstern Oh, just wondering. I'm waiting a while to buy anyway. iMacs always have issues when they update. Remember the first 27" ones?
They had yellow blotches on the screen or something. Then dead screens, IIRC.
@TimStone lol
Ah well, it's only a month or two until Lion.
It may be worth a wait.

7:35 PM
Hmm... "Please save the date for the second annual [company name here] golf tournament, which will be held on Wednesday, [date]."
Isn't that a workday?

Yeah, but that's "normal" @PopularDemand
ummmmm

@drachenstern - Yea, 1&1 is known to not work in chrome.

I ... was not aware of that

I've seen that before in Safari.

all the more reason to only use them for registration and then to host with a better host

7:42 PM
Correct sir.

@drachenstern What's "normal"?

@PopularDemand having a company sponsored golf tourney during a workday

Wes
@drachenstern Does anyone sniff browser strings any longer?
Em that wasn't particularly to you just a comment about the picture

@Wes yeah, a lot of people do. They obviously haven't learned about sniffing features instead.

Wes
Wow - In a bad way

7:50 PM
In case anyone isn't familiar with api.jquery.com/jQuery.support ;)

Wes
never looked at jquery despite it being a meme
Oh yeah used feature detection before mostly due to quirksmode

I use it for cross browser compat on core browser functionality and for DOM manip. I really like it.

Wes
My job really isn't in websites any longer

@balpha +1 for making @ + O + Tab bring up "@ÓlafurWaage." Also, hi @ÓlafurWaage!

:)
Anyone studied network flow algorithms?

8:06 PM
Chat isn't open source is it?

Q: Access to Chat Code?

JustinOk, I'm not saying... "Let me have you chat code." I'm asking if its an open source project. I love the design of chat and well the entire interface in general. I'd love to incorporate a like client into my own project, but I'd have to do some adapt work and add some features that this site reall...

Don't think so

Wes
sorry

I didn't think so either.
@ÓlafurWaage I studied network flow algorithms in school... many moons ago... why?

Know of any good tutorials? Doing some skool projects with it and need to learn some real quick.

Ah, no. I studied from a book.
Might still have it...
"Computer Networking" by Kurose and Ross.
It was pretty approachable and understandable for me.

8:11 PM
I'm in a "programming under pressure" course, and we're taught stuff pretty quickly and need to use that knowledge to solve problems
with limited time, so I need to get me some learning fast

hit us with some Qs, that might be faster :p
+1 for googlebrain in chat

hehe, no questions as of yet, currently doing some reading on cutting.

google brain? What now?

In optimization theory, the max-flow min-cut theorem states that in a flow network, the maximum amount of flow passing from the source to the sink is equal to the minimum capacity which when removed in a specific way from the network causes the situation that no flow can pass from the source to the sink. The max-flow min-cut theorem is a special case of the duality theorem and can be used to derive Menger's theorem and the König-Egerváry Theorem. Definition Let N = (V, E) be a network (directed graph) with s and t being the source and the sink of N respectively. : The capacity of an edge...
ok that's kinda an annoying feature of the chat
just wanted to post a little link, not dump text

it's useful since it's a preview (since we sometimes know concepts as a different name)

8:15 PM
aye :S

ok, wtf is up with "breakup" spam as of late? I'm amazed that the googlefilters aren't removing it

Wes
what spam?

I hate collisions ....

that's a collision?

sure why not
idk, what to call it
it broke the flow of my previous two posts :p

8:21 PM
Oh lol

Man Fuji apples are great, never been an apple fan but those things are pretty good

Wes
8:41 PM
any luck?

Oh I figured he was going to on account of his posting a Q on MSO about getting the source to this

Wes
take less than a day to knock up. apparently

apparently

Wes
obviously I mean it would take me 1 hour on a BBC acorn typing with my nose.

I'm not sure how an oak tree helps in this situation, but ok

Wes
8:47 PM
The BBC Microcomputer System, or BBC Micro, was a series of microcomputers and associated peripherals designed and built by Acorn Computers for the BBC Computer Literacy Project, operated by the British Broadcasting Corporation. Designed with an emphasis on education, it was notable for its ruggedness, expandability and the quality of its operating system. Following the Literacy Project's call for bids for a computer to accompany the TV programmes and literature, Acorn won the contract with the Proton, a successor to its Atom computer prototyped at short notice. Renamed the BBC Micro, t...

It was a joke

sorry I thought you were taking me semi seriously
hey sometimes when i leave this tab and return it seems to scroll me up

its probably a plugin that you have that conflicts ... that would be a known issue if so

Ok ta. Doesn't bother me I just noticed it a couple of times today

Wes
9:18 PM
where's The*Exception these days?

He is away for personal reasons.

Wes
Fair enough just seems quiet here without him.

He has asked that no more be said. I or a moderator or a few other people can easily get ahold of him tho if you need him for something.
It is, but it's quiet here in general lately. I think with spring setting in everyone is finally working more

Wes
Probably.
I guess I should be coding. or doing something else.
but instead I'm hanging arround refreshing meta all evening
for some reason.

Hi folks.
I just submitted update number 5 to my season app.
More bug fixes.
Should be stable - finally.

Wes
9:24 PM
Hey @Moshe

Next release breaks that with localizations, but hey, more languages = more market = more money.

@drachenstern Much to my dsappointment ;)

Will the Tavern survive the summer?

@mootinator ;)
@Moshe it shall

Meaning, if folks start to work, who will be back in the fall?
It's kind of like reverse-hibernation.
@drachenstern - I was thinking - surprise! - now that my other app is stable and has been tweaked to the likings of my users (for the most part), I'd like to look at Nippon again.
So...

9:26 PM
lol

@drachenstern - What are your thoughts on my "colorizing" Nippon and making it fit the iOS UI paradigm a little more?

Wes
Nippon?

hey, see what you can do with a camera app. I want to see about importing pics from albums, importing to this app, and sending up to a webserver (which I'm working on getting the details set on) ... I figure playing with a camera and album import would be a good start for you to have a task at hand ;)
@Moshe I don't think colorization would do much for you

@drachenstern Hrm? What do you mean? Hit me up on Google Talk. I have 10 minutes.
@drachenstern It might bring more impulse buys.
I don't mean just color - I mean "textured" rows and some nice graphic work.

@Moshe try it on your demo app first before committing on the "big" app

9:29 PM
Good point.
@Wes Yes, Nippon. ducks
@drachenstern Perhaps I will.
I'm surprised at the lack of ratings.
It had over 800 downloads when it was free and featured on a website, but that traffic did nothing for me.
Not a single rating. Several downloads, maybe, after it was paid again.
I played that one wrong.

Wes
Hey cool.

@Wes Thank you.

Wes
See If I can presuade my wife to download it.
Whats your pitch?

Well, my other app, which was downloaded almost 500 times, is a really niche product but I advertised a little and some family "spammed the internet" for me.
@Wes Thank you.

I think I have the highest legitimate score in Nippon ;)
@Wes it's drugwars redone with fish instead of drugs
er, dopewars?

9:32 PM
@drachenstern Uh, no longer, take another look.
@Wes It's a throwback to the classic trading game "Dope Wars", with Game Center integration.
I've got more planned if I can pump sales a bit.

@Moshe legitimate scores? and are we talking on the testflight or the regular app? I haven't "reinstalled" the app due to the testflight taking over

I'm not sure if it's worth the effort though, if I'm doing worse than I am with a religious/seasonal app.
@drachenstern The App Store version.

ok, I have somewhere to be...

@drachenstern - Eine Moment bitte

@Moshe can't keep flipping 'em on me :p

9:33 PM
@drachenstern I know.
I'll upload a screenshot 1 sec
@Shog9 - How would you advise me in getting more involved on SU?

@Moshe Good god, man - why would I ever advise something like that?

@Shog9 I feel like I dropped the ball on some of the SE sites.
I like having 6K on SO, but it feels unbalanced.

Ok, then - what's your area of expertise?

Like, privalege-wise, despite being an established member.
@Shog9 I was all around but Apple brainwashed me.
I even held a Windows 7 house party once...
</reminisce>
@drachenstern - still there?
Sorry, missed you on Gtalk, wasn't logged in - false positive...

@Moshe There are a few hundred osx questions that haven't been answered, and a few osx+windows questions too

9:37 PM
Thank you.

You don't necessarily have to answer them, but some well-placed edits and/or up-votes would probably do some good.

@Shog9 Ok, I'll keep that search in mind "[osx]".
Thank you.

np

I'm leaving momentarily. See you later.
Tschüss

9:55 PM
i need help cv a duplicate duplicate of my Q

@MarcGravell how did you get the source of a message again?
