01:00 - 21:0021:00 - 23:00

1:30 AM
silences the crickets

1:42 AM
heh

Hm, suppose now is as good of a time as any to update this userscript.

2:30 AM
nah, I doubt it

1 hour later…
3:38 AM
I totally feel like I'm in a twilight zone ... dodododododododo

3:48 AM
reckon how long it will take wget to download 24000 files?

Hello!

@TylerChacha you say hello, I say goodbye :p It's time for bed here in CST

@drachenstern Happy 11pm!

I think I'll have a half a glass of wine before bed tho, if you have anything yould like to chat about
watching Death Race on FX

I just am continuing to build my programming language
I'm working on compiling and parsing functions..

3:50 AM
I am waiting on domains to do their thing
I hate DNS propagation some times

I need to put in some garbage collection..
I need to get into the habit of writing better committ messages

don't we all?
jcolebrand.info/index.htm <-- it has begun

Are you actually going to make a site?

I am
I told myself first was getting a domain name
next was getting hosting
Altho now it seems I need to learn CPanel so I can manage the effing things ...

Behold: The beginnings of OOP: var subtract = function {
    return argument1 - 50;
};

3:57 AM
@TylerChacha I didn't tell you what I have in mind for said site? I am going to work on a platform for image backup and sharing

my first function that kinda works right...

like a cross between carbonite and flickr/imgur

@drachenstern Yes, I heard that

Oh, ok, I wasn't sure, I was pretty sure I had told the room repeatedly

NOT ANOTHER ONE!!!!

3:58 AM
Oh, goodness. Even smoking a cigar while watching The Daily Show can be dangerous. I almost swallowed a mouthful of smoke.

hahahahahhaah shhhh
@GeorgeMarian eh, that does have the potential to be bad
when jcolebrand.com/index.htm mirrors jcolebrand.info/index.htm I should be ready.

@drachenstern And yet, I keep pushing my luck.

wtf? why is trafficZ hosting the landing page for my domain? that makes no sense
I can see I will need help in the AM from my host provider

I really want Netbeans to allow me to hit a single button and remove all unused imports in my entire project

4:04 AM
It's ok, I totally trust my webhost ;)
I'm sure it's because I don't understand CPanel
I prefer back in the day when I just configured the root system files myself by hand
ok, where's the last of my wine?
well there goes that 750 of Merlot all in one night

@drachenstern One those nights, eh?

nah, just had the urge to drink some merlot and the next thing I knew the whole bottle was gone.
I don't normally drink that much, so ...
also, I'm surprised at my tolerance. I don't feel like I've had a 750

Wait 'till the morning. ;)

I don't normally have a problem with hangovers actually
especially not with red wines

Lucky. Wine usually kicks my ass.

4:13 AM
Well, I'll let you know in the morning for sure ;)

I'm kind of really effing nervous about my new sites ...

Why's that?

I snagged the following TLDs for jcolebrand: info,biz,org,com,us,net
cos it means starting the project
it was one thing to discuss it

Ah, fair enough.

4:14 AM
it will be another to actually write it and have it work and then let people trust it to work faultlessly

Yeah, I know how that is. Been working on my blog for months. :)

writing your own?

Nah. I had considered that. But then it would never be finished.

lol, so what platform did you decide on?

WordPress

4:17 AM
I'm debating writing a webstore for my mom as well towards the end of the year
The one she's using now is horrible for her
I think I can use the software I'm going to write first to help her with that so I'm prioritizing
I want to see how quickly I can do this first part
Ok, well that wine is gone

heh
Now you're making me wonder what wine I have available to me.
I'd better not. I have an interview tomorrow.

tomorrow I think I'm gonna crack a cabernet sauv, but I might do my cotes du rhone tomorrow instead...
what time is the interview?

In the afternoon.

That should be good

Yeah, I'm considering finishing off the bottle of scotch. I think there's one glass left in it.

4:21 AM
So I'm thinking .info will be my personal site, where I should put my blog ... the others I'm going to use for various other things perhaps ...
ooooh, which distiller?

Ah, so each will be something different?

Yeah, that's the trick

Glenlivet

I think that will be interesting, it'll give me a chance to do some interesting things, I think

So, what is this project of yours?

4:23 AM
So it is intended to be a mashup of carbonite and flickr
that's the first part of the elevator pitch anyways

Was this inspired by flickr losing that one photographer's images? ;)

so I need a webserver / db / fs I can upload stuff to, and I'll write a webservice to let me drop stuff, and I'll write a windows service (and later a OSX service and a unix/linux service [altho they aren't called that on those platforms]) and then a iPhone and an Android and a WinPho app and ... so first things first, the initial target platform is Windows desktops
No, I hadn't heard of that. This was inspired by my sis-n-law losing her laptop to a house fire.
Then I was additionally motivated by the recent disaster of tornados

I happened to lurk here via phone...

Welcome Fosco

@drachenstern I could provide linux hosting of web/db/files for you.

4:28 AM
Thanks I have one already, but if I can't figure out the effing CPanel I might do that ;) also it might be good to have a secondary host for testing distributed stuff, so I'll keep you in mind. Thanks

Ok, you know how to get in touch with me.. good luck, project sounds cool.

lol, I do. Thanks!!
Everyone so far really loves the idea.

@drachenstern I thought you were going to bed

I was
eventually
you caught me as I was closing browser tabs already ...

4:49 AM
@badpssockpuppet are you saying this is only IP restricted? The user can post questions from another machine?

5:25 AM
Meh... I need to clean up some code before I can really get further

7 hours later…
12:00 PM
hi, @Marc. could you please take a look on , , , , , ,
i'm about some normalization
for example, everywhere with a slash, or everywhere without

what is more normal for iOS?

sorry,
let me think
iOS 4.2.1 rather then iOS4 or iOS4.2.1, in internet in general, i think
and on OS we have much more popular such versioning in tags. with slash
but and , probably because that's kind of brand
like

should be fine, but you should really propose it as a synonym for visibility

apple.com/ipad/ios4 uses iOS 4 with a space, so not a brand name, but just a version
@MarcGravell i'm afraid i have no enough votes for synonym proposal

12:25 PM
@abatishchev can I check which site you mean?
we have several that would work...

Nvm, looks look like they're already synonyms
But they appear in the tags page

1:04 PM
@marcGravell I'm in favor of either way. I think no slash is better for mobile users and also I think all ios tags should be synonyms of just "iOS".
Or "iPhone"
No need for a new tag each time Apple claims they finally fixed the signal/wifi chip.
Speaking of which. I just filed several bug reports with Apple.

1 hour later…
2:14 PM
@MarcGravell sorry, Marc, what site do you mean?
where iOS <version> used with space, not w/out?
afaik + i just googled for some random links
@Moshe agree
especially for minor versions
probably it's good to merge everything into with appropriate synonyms to prevent further branching/growth
but insert spaces everywhere before :)

3:14 PM
I need some upvote love for my suggestion of a topic for upcoming devdays
0
A: What topics would you like to learn at DevDays 2011?

Adam DavisIt's an app app app app world! A talk that goes through the industry shift from independent software distributors to the large app stores. Developed by the phone industry, co-opted and made popular by apple, and now moving to PCs via the Mac and upcoming windows stores. What does this mean fo...

So if you agree with the topic, go forth and vote!
Hey, cool, my phone number made it back onto the star list.
Huh, everyone must be working for a change.

Work? What's that? (;

Is this behavior by design? @RebeccaChernoff

Q: Link dialog may appear while voting on question

DragonLordWhen I click on a vote button on a question, the link dialog containing a URL to the question may appear intermittently. This most often occurs on Stack Exchange Photography, but I've seen it occur on other sites. Is this a bug?

Generally asking on meta is fine, you don't need to track down and @lert mods unless it is an emergency. (:
Did you, uh, read the dialog that appeared?

The dialog says "share a link to this question" followed by a URL to the question.

So, if you voted on it, maybe you thought it was a good question? One that was worth...sharing?
Do you expect us to know the sharing habits of each and every person that reads the site?

Sorry.
I simply wanted a moderator to look at the question, post an answer if appropriate, and retag it as needed.

If you've posted on meta, it'll get seen.

3:56 PM
Okay, thank you! :) I have work to do, so see you later.

ok peoples, I have a question about XML ... but I don't know how to phrase the question to ask to get the answer I want, so I'm gonna rubberduck on you guys
<!ENTITY triggers "<triggers><intervalTrigger seconds="30" /></triggers>">
                                                      ^^^^ quotes
That should line up nicely for most people. If it doesn't then I can just pretend like I know what the hell I'm doing. On to the question!!
Should I put double quotes there? ie: ""30"" or should I use an escaped character sequence?
What do you even call that situation? nested quotes in an XML entity is the closest I can come up with, but I'm not sure that's right

Is that a legal place for a CDATA block? (shrug)

not cdata
you have to use &# for the quotes I believe.

I'm doing it in the <!DOCTYPE place ... as you can see I'm learning something new today ...

Er, wait, wouldn't you want an &quot entity
Right...

4:09 PM
so I should do " here?

" should work

I'm trying to mentally process it before I just push it into the automated processor ...
how would you ask that question besides the way I did it?

@Hogan well so I already saw that link, but they're only putting strings, not a whole XML chunk

Would you have to use > and < then for the xml to be valid or is <> good enough?

4:13 PM
see, idk
I don't even know what the question I'm trying to ask here is

yeah I think you have to %gt; like mootin sez
you can't have those nasty characters in xml

I would probably ask how to nest XML in an XML entity I suppose, given the quotes aren't the only potential source of error.

how to nest xml in an xml doctype entity <-- sound reasonable?
<!DOCTYPE cruisecontrol [
    <!ENTITY triggers "<triggers><intervalTrigger seconds=&qout;30&qout; /></triggers>">
    <!ENTITY rootdir "J:\pathyness\" >
]>

@drachenstern Sure.

I can't imagine that it is legal to have the < and > character in an entity
but then, I've been accused of having a good imagination.

Wes
4:20 PM
@Hogan @drachenstern Im pretty sure your right.
I think you need entities in the entities.

I found it in the spec
4.3.3
only a-z+A-Z+1-9 and # &
oh wait...
nevermind that is entity name.
"When an entity reference appears in an attribute value, or a parameter entity reference appears in a literal entity value, its replacement text must be processed in place of the reference itself as though it were part of the document at the location the reference was recognized, except that a single or double quote character in the replacement text must always be treated as a normal data character and must not terminate the literal. For example, this is well-formed:"

Q: nest xml in an xml doctype entity

drachenstern<!DOCTYPE cruisecontrol [ <!ENTITY triggers "<triggers><intervalTrigger seconds="30" /></triggers>"> <!ENTITY rootdir "J:\pathyness\" > ]> I'm trying to setup my first cruisecontrol.net server, so since I want to reduce the amount of repeated configur...

Wes
I think its <triggers><intervalTrigger

@wes I agree based on the xml spec.

Wes
For the record. I've seen someone do this with an ant script
Its horrible
I'm sure theres a better solution

4:25 PM
a better solution to what?

Wes
Entities that resolve to XML fragments
But more specifically cruisecontrol.net should have some feature to assist you reduce repeated config
Does its xml parser not have any include function?
Also is this for your website who's url I can't rembmber at the moment.

@Wes Hi. My name is Cole. I'm doing this for the very first time. I'm not even sure what to ask. Have we met?
@Wes no, this is for work
my website url is currently at jcolebrand.com and shortly to be something devious and mischiveous

Wes
Yes @drachenstern You were doing a website with flickr style and

@Wes yes

Wes
something I wasn't familiar with the other site

4:29 PM
do try and keep up ...
I am at work, doing workish things
that is at home
:p

Wes
Sorry
Oh well if your website shows two hits from gibraltar today one is me at work not doing workish things
and the other is me just now

So ... I'm going to do my initial development on the newly minted domain name jcolebrand.com (or one of the other TLDs I picked up (info|biz|net|org|us) and then when I have a actually usable service, I will have to get a new name for it
@Wes I'm not worried about it. I have exactly one static page up right now ;)
I figure the roadmap will look like this:

Wes
btw @drachenstern we've talked several times here. Though not for long I guess

1. Build the basic service for my computer, show that it works.
2. Make it work with the wife's laptop.
3. Have some guinea pig friends install it on their computers. (and hopefully I don't have to do _anything_ there)
4. Have you general rabble install it and watch my free-host friend cringe at the TB of consumed space :p
5. Go get VC funding so it will be self sustaining
6. Scramble to realize that I still haven't figured out how to make the storage redundant so that it's actually a useful backup service
@Wes no I know we have ;)
somewhere around 5.b is when I will have to pick a new rebrandable domain name

Wes
I'm not familar with the VC abbreviation
well it probably means something different to me

4:35 PM
@drachenstern I dun answered.

yeah but when I open that page it doesn't validate
<!DOCTYPE root [
    <!ENTITY triggers "<triggers><intervalTrigger seconds='30' /></triggers>">
    <!ENTITY rootdir "J:\pathyness\" >
]>
<root>
  &triggers;
</root>

ahhh

Wes
Don't think you can use single quote
In thehory it should diplay correctly in ff or crome

The single quote does validate, heh.

When I validate the above block at that URL in IE, it says it doesn't validate

4:49 PM
> At the end of the journey the driver is provided with an overall score, with the best driver getting 100, or zero depending on what he's trying to achieve.

shakes his fist at IE.

Wes
Does it display correctly in firefox? if you name it something.xml and drag it in?

Go back and look at the Q, somebody gave a very explicit example, so that I also learned even more today /me shakes head in shame
Also, you people go upboat his answer

@drachenstern Yay, I learned stuff by proxy. I shall use this knowledge for only evil.

@mootinator that's often the best way :D

Wes
4:59 PM
Good answer btw

Wes
Also what is VC funding
@rchernoff oi

@Wes did you upvote it?
@Wes venture capital
@Wes it's "Oy" and it won't get you upstarred anymore
@RebeccaChernoff what did he do now?

Wes
@drachenstern did I upvote what
Also its the first time I've ever said that

@Wes "Good answer btw"

Wes

@Wes pedantics

Oh yeah I upvoted it
btw I'd like your opinion on this

Q: How to migrate to code review.

WesRelated: On migrating from SO: how to do this efficiently and appropriately. I've just come accross a question which I believe is ideal for code review. However it's already got an accepted answer. I can't flag that it should go on code review, and I'm not sure flagging is the best approach. S...

I think that the general rule that you're going to find from mods (since I am one) is that once it has that magic checkmark, or once it has more than one upvoted answer, it isn't going to really be a migration candidate.

Wes
Okay fair enough

I'm curious about if it's sane to have a migration path from SO to CR

Wes
5:14 PM
Jeff thinks so

I guess what I'm saying is a sane path in that regular users can migrate those questions by vote

Wes
I doubt its important enough
But its not going to get any traffic if theres no migration
I thikn
I was active in the area 51 proposal. But I've nothing to add content wise.
Its a service I like though
So basically anything that features functioning code where someone is asking about best practice and constructive comments on improving code should be migrated. In my opinion only
Jeff's definition is different
Seen your comment

Most of my meta rep came from: meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/68743/…
I posted a subsequent feature request but it got Jeff-d.

well I can't upvote that twice

As long as there are no people shaking sharp, pointy sticks... :-)
