That reminds me that I need to look into a better way of managing all of my "daily deals" and such.
Those emails are worthless once the day's passed, but I'm lazy and never clean them out, heh.

I use a filter in gmail to label all of those types of emails.

Yeah, I've been meaning to see if I can do a delayed delete based on a filter in Thunderbird with an extension or something.

Heh, I haven't used an email app in ages.

If i had brought apple stock instead of the iPod 10 years ago i'd have $11,914 today. hrm.

6:21 AM
@Reno That kind of analysis is easy to do in retrospect.

Any mods around?

@ircmaxell Be more specific. :)

(I'd suggest not clicking the link inside, NSFW)

The only thing I can do there is flag the message.

me too (and I did)
Ok, thanks anyway. Good night

6:26 AM
g'night

A few more flags should kill it (I threw one in)
G'night

Ok, I'm curious enough to ask WTF is it, but not curious enough to check myself. :)

Holy crap, continuous earthquakes! Making me crazy....

I'm not entirely sure, it was a Chinese proxy, but the content was expired by the time I clicked the link. The advertisements were pretty mild, but suggested that the content probably wasn't chat-friendly. :P

6:32 AM
The new drop down thingy me jiggy is nice - although I'm not sure I'll really use it much

@Barry I agree that the new stuff is nice, but killing the envelope isn't.

maybe we should ask PopularDemand to put in a word from us :P

@GeorgeMarian So I am guessing the numbers next to favorites & revisions - are they edits?

@Barry Good question. I assume the numbers next to favorites are any changes to favorite questions and revisions are probably revisions to your own questions.
Yup, looks like that. Clicking on the labels themselves displays some details.

6:38 AM
@GeorgeMarian Actually, I've just looked around (my other accounts) and that seems to be the case.

damn, 8.8 mag earthquake hit Japan

:O

I wonder if there is still notifications enabled. I would have thought so. A little number will probably appear next to the drop down for new edits.

@RebeccaChernoff Yeah, poor @SMark over there. :/

Oh, wow. That's huge.

6:41 AM
> OXYGEN REMOVED FROM US AIRPLANE LAVATORIES
Good job MSNBC. I'm sure that was the best wording you could come up with.

O.o
I'm saddened by the decline of journalistic quality in the internet age.

Apparently there's some of those overhead oxygen masks in plane bathrooms, heh.
(which is what was removed)

I was in japan when a 6.5 mg earthquake hit it. Apparently i slept through it =T

@TimStone Interesting, but what happens if you're caught with your pants down while the plane's going down. ;)
Sorry, I just couldn't resist.

Hahah, well, pilots are trained to bring the plane down to a safe altitude as soon as possible anyway.

6:47 AM
Ok, unlinking /users/recent is definitely a bummer for me. I sure hope they don't get rid of that page.

Hrm, Mrozek didn't update the RFC2SE >_<

Is that what we're calling it now? :P

That's what I've always called that post...

The feature is still in flux too I guess...but I suppose it should be added nevertheless.
Ah, I call it "the change list", apparently I'm not creative enough.
> Reporters at the Associated Press Tokyo Bureau take shelter under a table Friday while a strong earthquake strikes Japan.
Note the heads in the background.

@TimStone lol
"WTF are those idiots doing?" ;)

6:53 AM
man i'd hate it if i had to face someones butt ;)

@RebeccaChernoff >.<! Go to sleep and stop stealing my answers

Eewww, I don't like having to do two clicks to get to my profile page. Can we have the arrow open the drop down, and the name still link to profile? please?

@Benjol You're like the 19th person to suggest that in the last four hours :)

closes @Benjol as a dupe

6:57 AM
@MichaelMrozek they must have been right :)
So star me, that way maybe I'll be the last...

I'm assuming they'll change it, but if not I'll end up scripting it to do exactly that, that seems right to me
I think the 66-upvoted post on MSO will do more than a starred chat message

@Benjol I am not a fan either, but that arrow is pretty small to be a link like that.

I clicked it every time; I didn't even realize they'd messed with the profile link until I tried to actually go to my profile

@MichaelMrozek Yeah, I mentioned that to Jin earlier, it doesn't look like it's supposed to do what it does, heh.
So, I suspect we'll see changes of some sort in the near future, though in which direction I'm not sure.

I already have a script that rewrites half the header; I should just have it delete the whole header and create a new one from scratch. Take that, SO designers

7:02 AM
@RebeccaChernoff So make it bigger :)

$('.profile-triangle').css('font-size', '72pt');

@MichaelMrozek Perfect!

7:28 AM
RIP, StackExchangeâ„¢ RedEmpathy SpamEnvelopeâ„¢
2
You, like Bouncy, will always remain in our hearts.

We usher in the new age of the StackExchangeâ„¢....?

eh, first I have to realize what it is for
the beta name shall be StackExchangeâ„¢ SpamCounter MiniDropdownâ„¢
2
but I'm not completely satisfied

Ooo -- the profile triangle should bounce when you have changes
Somebody get @balpha on that

Bouncy, the Vendetta?

Revenge of the bounce?

7:32 AM
No, not bounce. It should dance.

@TimStone With 14 backup unicorns?

Is there any other way?

Yes, and it's 15 unicorns without the arrow.

Well, at least we have options.

That's probably what the arrow should reveal
15 dancing unicorns.

7:35 AM
@TimStone It should spin

When you get downvoted the arrow starts glowing. "Got the downvote blues?"

Argh, Chrome, why do you insist on not removing tooltips properly? grumbles

Seems to be only from bookmarks. Since I never click on them I just hid the bookmark bar. (:
Usually have it disabled, don't remember why I turned it on again.

@RebeccaChernoff I get phantom tooltips from the tab bar on the bottom area of the browser quite frequently actually.

I'm having the issue of the tooltip coming up when I switch tabs to show the page title, and then I move the mouse too fast and it gets "stuck". >:/

7:41 AM
Then again I use the mouse sometimes

tab bar on the bottom area? huh?
@TimStone hmm no repro

I'm going to shame myself by saying this, but I couldn't intuitively figure out how to switch tabs using only the keyboard, besides using Ctr+#.

Ctrl-Tab ftw :P

|:
gleeBox ftw

You and your gleeBox

7:43 AM
@badpssockpuppet Wow, fail on my part. lmao

@SMark, you ok? (which seems a silly question to ask since you joined, but meh)
(I think I recall you're in Japan but no clue where) >_<

Hi, yeah, ok for now

Whew :/

But, not sure there could be another one though

Let's hope not.

7:45 AM
@TimStone Let's not forget Ctrl-PgUp & Ctrl-PgDn. :)

Yeah, hope not

@GeorgeMarian Ah ha, thanks. :)

are you in the area?

Holy crap. I just discovered that ctrl+shift+page up/down moves tabs around in Chrome. Is this widely known?

I am at Tokyo

7:47 AM
@MichaelMrozek I think I stumbled on that before and forgot about it.

@MichaelMrozek I've known about that for ages, despite not having known any of the aforementioned more basic commands.

Well now I'm hurt that nobody told me

Ctrl-Shift-PgUp/PgDn is a no-op here

Yeah, it doesn't work for me either, heh.

Not centered, but feels very huge, the ground is moving when we run out of office

7:51 AM
I think they have stopped all the JR trains

Yeah
Cell phones still does not work yet
Gonna logout for now to save my iPad battery, I ll be back, later

Be safe.

take care

stay safe @SMark!

assassinates (audit)

8:24 AM
Anyone here? I seem to have been pinged earlier, but can't get context on iOS.
@RebeccaChernoff if you replied, I didn't get it. My email set up is a bit strange. It's synced across several devices, so I guess whichever one gets to my email first gets to decide what is spam.

@Moshe I think drachenstern pinged you about reading some Hebrew, but then got it taken care of, or something.

Ah ok.
My only Internet connection right now is my phone. I was immersed in working on my game.
So I missed the ping.
Well, night. (Beta testers - another one is on the way.)

G'night.

Hmm, what to write in my profile...

what happened to the old recent activity page...please don't tell me they ditched it :/

@TimStone my got...has that answer been nuked?

They did, kind of. The old one is still accessible for now, just not directly.

@Kev Yup

Q: Eeeek! What happened to my envelope?

MartiThe envelope is gone from next to my name!   How am I supposed to check where those recent points came from? I don't remember the link to that page! Edit: just to summarize the ways that the reputation graph does not make a suitable replacement for the /recent page: The recent page has just th...

@tombull89 Yup, together with the account

@TimStone 'I debug JavaScript code for Stack Overflow. They totally should pay me for this.'

@YiJiang Hahah, nice ;)

I actually prefer the new drop down. The envelope never seemed to work anyway

8:49 AM
dont say bad things about the dead

wut. So this is what the meta explosion was about...I want to see my profile when I click on my username :(

@Barry I think there are some refinements to be made, but ultimately I agree.

@TimStone Definitely, the whole set of 'today, yesterday...' buttons for instance

Yeah. Nick was in here earlier and mentioned that a per-day breakdown is planned for the future, which should be similar to the reputation tab on /review.

The date format can definitely be made friendlier/less strict
I just tried to enter '2011/3/1' and it rejected it because it wants a leading 0 in front of the '1'

8:53 AM
I know Jeff doesn't particularly like jquery.ui but the datepicker would be ideal for the dates.

@Barry Possibly, he doesn't like them because of their weight and not because there's anything particularly wrong with it

I really like the new listing of your reputation where you can expand it out to see the breakdown of rep earned on the question.

@Barry It doesn't work particularly well

@YiJiang Yes, I should have clarified that. I meant the bloat associated with it rather than functionality
@YiJiang Does it not? What's wrong with it?

@Barry Well, the maximum number of entries you can get is around 4 for each post, it's not very useful to not have them expanded already. I really don't like the fact that each expansion is a new ajax request, it's a direction the SE engine has been going
and that for it to be really useful I'd want it to break down the rep changes by date

Kev
8:57 AM
hmm...this is not one of their better UX changes....to add to an already expanding list of bad UI/nav choices
you'd think with all that money they could employ a couple of top notch usability folks

@Kev Agreed, but some of the issues were more technical then anything else

The /recent page made the databases cry.

The dropdown menu could definitely do with better styles

Kev
@TimStone - i would be disappointed to see /recent go

9:01 AM
@YiJiang z-index in particular

I've actually did some heavy Stylish work to the 10k tools to make it actually pleasant to use

@YiJiang I don't see why you would need more than 4 for each post? The only options would be Accepted answer, up vote, down vote and ? (As they are grouped together) I agree with the Ajax request though that is a little annoying if you are going through a lot of posts.

@YiJiang \o/

Kev
@TimStone - tbh they don't need /recent to be that recent....

@Barry Well, I can guess the entries just by looking at the rep changes! Why would it be useful to expand it if it doesn't show me any more useful info?

9:03 AM
@Kev I think it had to do with the general way it was setup, but I don't know the specific details (you'd have to question Nick Craver)

@YiJiang Well how else are they going to shoe horn an Ajax request in? :)

@TimStone Well not just that - the spaces around the elements are totally unnecessary, and the whole thing can be tightened up a bit

@YiJiang Hah, that sounds suspiciously like what I was thinking too ;)

Kev
@TimStone - if they sorted the rep list under the graph by most recent vote date i could live with that.

@Kev There's supposed to be a view for that coming, I think. :)

Kev
9:07 AM
ah ok

Something comparable to what was on /recent, as far as the reputation tab goes.
I'm not sure to what extent though, I guess we'll see.

Tsunami warning has been increased wrh.noaa.gov/total_forecast/…

I... wow... have a look at this answer:

A: An SVN error (200 OK) when checking out from my online repo

TiloHello, I had to dig into this issue too and found the following pages which lead me to the solution: - http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.comp.version-control.subversion.devel/117844 (See espacially the link to "Julian's patch") There is stated that the "OPTIONS of : 200 () OK" error is quite miss...

Kev
@TimStone - they should have a labs.stackoverflow.com to demo stuff like this before rolling it out half baked.

It has +18 score, around one year old, and is on a very famous question
Yet if you look at the source you can see that two <url> bits were stripped out because the engine interpreted them as HTML tags

9:25 AM
You'd think that the team would've seen this when running tests with this new thingy, hrump...

@YiJiang There's really no way to unit test how a page looks

@badpssockpuppet Well, they do have a dev version of the site which they test this stuff on
You know, actually use the feature you're going to push out instead of running unit tests...

@YiJiang If it works on SO it's probably good enough!!

@badpssockpuppet Bah, you're right, we're the only ones that matter!

@YiJiang To be fair.. :P
6 hours ago, by Jin
@TimStone i agree they should be consistent. but i haven't the time to update every site's sprite before we launched the new profile popup
The style bit was kind of on short notice, heh.

9:28 AM
poke I'm more active on SF and SU, but here as well as MSO has all the gossip.
Well, when I say gossip...

Honestly I'd rather continue seeing SE's quick iterations

@badpssockpuppet I'd honestly like them to finish developing the features first to avoid +94 score s asking to bring the old, replaced feature back

eh, I don't think the envelope will be really missed
Sure -- invaluable to know how much rep I have on meta.Gaming
but since the Superdropdown came, I immediately stopped using it

Well, given that the reputation tab doesn't do everything /recent does, it's no surprise people want that page back

Heh, no Autobiographer for me because I don't have a website I want to put in the box, should probably do something about that.

9:42 AM
@TimStone Just enter something like http://www.example.com, get the badge, then remove it

@TimStone I have my twitter there.

@YiJiang That seems silly, I should just get around to setting up a personal site. :P

@YiJiang Wait 'till the Unicorn Police get you, you fraud :p

@LoïcWolff No twitter for me, heheh.

@TimStone No twitter? But... how do you procrastinate?

9:44 AM
@TimStone I'm not a twitter'er either, too many distractions as it is.

weird

10:22 AM
Was researching on censorship in Singapore and stumbled upon this: wired.com/wired/archive/1.04/gibson.html Wired was banned for a while in Singapore for this I believe

10:52 AM
Nice article, is it true though ?

@Reno I can't vouch for it's truthness, but it's certainly different from anything local journalists would write, which is makes it a very amusing read

I only got to see Changi

The history of Singapore is fairly accurate, and so is the part on the death penalty
The franchise operation bit didn't take off as he thought it might (me writing this almost twenty years later still have never heard of that)
The eugenics thingy is again historically accurate (there was a plan to encourage university graduates to produce more babies while discouraging those from lower education level from doing so in the 60s)

@Reno Changi as in Changi Jail?

@MylesGray The airport I presume, though the jail is nowadays a tourist attraction

10:59 AM
@YiJiang Oh okay cool, My great grandad was held in Changi for about3/4 years

@MylesGray During the Japanese occupation?

@YiJiang Yeah, he was the director of Kodak in the middle east during World War 2, He stayed behind to destroy all the surveillance photos (they obviously provided all the optics and films and then developed them) and the Japanese bombed the last ship out, so he got taken to Changi
Was held there for around 3/4 years I believe and got every disease under the sun
really very interesting

No just the airport and stuff. It was a boring 17 hour transit

A: Should comment upvotes reward reputation?

Myles GrayNo, as more often than not comments just ask for thing (i.e. more code) in the question that a few people want too, so it gets up voted. No one should get rep for asking for the obvious, also people who post funny comments tend to get a lot of up votes, I don't think the rep system should be po...

11:14 AM
@MylesGray are you from ireland :o ?
so cool

@Reno That I am :)
Why is that cool :P
we don't do anything better (look at the state of the government) or different than anyone else

idk ... im fascinated by gaelic .. and welsh
also irish vowels are always good

Oh dear jesus, the Irish language sounds like a cat being strangled by a dog with rabies and a bad temper (I used to speak it) all its good for now is going up to the fields and talking to the sheep...

@DanGrossman I thought they gave the all clear for the nuclear power stations already?

I believe japan can handle EQ's not sure about the rest

IAEA says everything is OK, but a cooling system did fail
Japan is going to lose billions, not just from the earthquake but from the tsunamis

i think its time to give money to the red cross for me
Unless I am reading this wrong, the tsunami should be reaching Hawaii now??
wait the time zone converter reset the clock -_-
a little over an hour from now

@DanGrossman Is it THAT big?

11:50 AM
@MylesGray Yes, over 30 feet high in japan, moving at over 500 mph (800 kmh), and should be 3-6 ft or higher in hawaii

it doesnt seem as bad as the one in Thailand

It depends on local currents and stuff, but yes the boats need to be evacuated.

I should have been asleep hours ago but I can't fall asleep with the news
