A little scary that they keep showing live video from Hawaii with two people standing on the beach...

What are they doing there??

hardcore photographers?
any news on that 100 passenger ferry?

1:10 PM

1:23 PM
It's happening
All of a sudden the water is coming in and not going out on the hawaii news feeds
> A little scary that they keep showing live video from Hawaii with two people standing on the beach...
The place those people were standing is now underwater...

@DanGrossman Where is the video of the people?

@tombull89 I was wondering that too

welp i gotta go ... I hope everything goes well for hawaii

annoyed that the BBC video feed went down, probably because of the load on the server

1:32 PM
is this the decicated BBC feed or BBC news?

@tombull89 It's BBC news, yes, though there's also a dedicated text feed that aggregates reports, emails from readers and tweets beside it

@YiJiang use sky news

13:33: There has also been a major explosion at a petrochemical complex in Sendai, according to the Kyodo news agency.

Sad that the best CNN can do is show Windows Media Player streaming a Hawaii TV station which is a screencast of Flash streaming a security camera at a management building at the shore.

well, our internet has ground to a near-halt.

1:37 PM
Every 20 minutes someone 2 video feeds down the chain has to refresh the page to kill an idle timeout...
Oy, some idiot found out what camera every news channel is showing, and is now standing just feet from the wall the waves crested at... but the next wave could go over...
He waved at the camera

just got a very boring video of the west coast of the us?

He just rode his bike across the road ... he's in lower left of the video frame now

just wait untill you see him running...

Heh?
Sounds like something @badpssockpuppet would name

...connecting to stream...still...

@LoïcWolff Nah, it's too descriptive

Looks like the water is rising again to me, and that guy is still there
They're showing a reef that's usually underwater completely bare, the ocean receded...
ominous

1:55 PM
oh god

now it's underwater again...
"The fire department helicopter is trying to herd people out of the area. This one gentleman is only 15 feet away and isn't going to budge."
they're talking about that guy...

Now there's two people trying for a Darwin award -- death by tsunami with 4 hours advance notice...

@DanGrossman man, as if people trying to run away can have any luck

@DanGrossman are you watching just the hawaii one?

2:04 PM
@MylesGray Right now I'm watching CNN's stream of KITV and Hawaii News Now's stream of KGMB, both Hawaii

2:16 PM
This wave's bigger than the one 30 mins ago... the guy seems to have left, which is good...
It's so calm... like someone just slowly raised up the sea level 5-6 feet and left it there for a while
> Japanese police have now confirmed that between 200 and 300 bodies have been found on the beach near Sendai, the closest city to the epicentre. NHK television said the victims appeared to have drowned. Earlier, police said at least 60 people had been killed and 56 were missing. - BBC

Hello

I see that um ... disaster hit
anyone in any danger?

Just people in Japan it seems, everyone else had lots of notice for the tsunamis and theyre only a few feet high so far
Stock market's open. Going to be interesting.

I'd say wonderful ... but it seems wrong

Whew... finally got unwrap working with phpQuery

@TylerChacha I know what you mean, it's horrific to see how fragile us humans are but yet you can't help be fascinated - and be glad that it's not you.

@DanGrossman thats amazing

Any more news on the 100 person ship that went missing?

Popped over to twitter.com, and a Tweet by Barack Obama showed up

Kyodo News Agency: Japanese military prepares 300 planes and 40 vessels for earthquake relief. http://bit.ly/eQzIqc
Jiji News: Fukushima nuclear reactor cooling system expected to be restored soon.

What I wanna know is about that nuclear facility in Japan. The last thing we need is to start closing nuclear plants over something from this as fallout, no pun intended.

Morning.
This doesn't look to great, the news from Japan.
Google's featuring it on their homepage too.

If I were to go with "Nippon : Earthquake Relief edition. 50% sales donated to relief." would that just be being opportunistic?

Every little UI change... not that I haven't complained before, but I've instituted a personal policy of waiting a few days to complain about changes. That way, if it turns out I was only unhappy because it's change and not because it's actually bad, I won't end up adding noise.

@Moshe not if you really donated 50% to relief efforts. Otherwise it would be breach of contract and fraud and get you kicked out of the apple universe.

@drachenstern I'm not a liar. I woudl for sure do it.
bbiab

@tombull89 Well @balpha could have made it so it turns into an ♥

@PopularDemand I'm complaining about how SE rolled these changes out, not about the changes themselves - the comments on Jeff's answer to the 'Where did my envelope go' question states my point far more eloquently than I can

3:27 PM
@YiJiang Sorry, I'm not complaining about any specific person, just the volume of "change it back!" I'm seeing. I only got here a few minutes ago, so it's the only thing I've seen so far.

Back.
@drachenstern - My only issue with doing so is Apple's minimum payout policy. If I don't hit the minimum now and then I do so later on, after the relief effort has died down, how will I fulfill my pledge?
In order for me to get payed, I need to make $150 after Apple's 30%

you track actual sales numbers for the period while you're making that offer. And what you donate has nothing to do with apple's cut.
you're not saying "50% of profits from sales donated to relief" so you would be setting yourself up to only earn 20%
that's not me being an asshole, that's math.

I gotcha.
I only mention Apple's cut because of the payout issue.

If you can't afford to make a donation to an appropriate charity in the near future, even if you don't meet the payment threshold with Apple for a long time, you probably shouldn't do that promotion

@DanGrossman Which charities are helping there? (Red Cross, anyone else?)

An advance-fee fraud is a confidence trick in which the target is persuaded to advance sums of money in the hope of realizing a significantly larger gain. Among the variations on this type of scam are the Nigerian Letter (also called the 419 fraud, Nigerian scam, Nigerian bank scam, or Nigerian money offer), the Spanish Prisoner, the black money scam as well as Russian/Ukrainian scam (also widespread, though far less popular than the former). The so-called Russian and Nigerian scams stand for wholly dissimilar organized-crime traditions; they therefore tend to use altogether different bre...

Dear Mr. Wong, Thanks for your offer, however...

But but but I already wired him the 44.5MUSD from my bank to his bank so he could repay me in kind. Do you mean I'm out 50% of the mentioned amount above? My wife is gonna be so mad.

I have 45.5B USD which I need to transfer to your country. You know what, for you buddy, don't inconvenience yourself with an email. Just fly on over to my place at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Ask anyone for directions....

haha, indeed
however I think 935 Pennsylvania Avenue Northwest would be better

When you get there, just ask for me by name. They call me George Washington. Some of my friends, who wear these really awesome sunglasses (made in China of course) will take you to a padded room. The money is there. Take it back with you and keep 75%.

@PopularDemand Removing a feature with something that has half the functionality of the original and is semi-broken then telling people to calm down saying 'hey, we'll finish it next week. Sit tight!' isn't exactly going to make people happy isn't it?

@DanGrossman you recgonized the addr I gave?

:agrees:

3:42 PM
@drachenstern Googled it.

@YiJiang a) who said the old things was better? b) I get notifications on responses via the super-collider, so I'm good there. I now get rep scoring via the dropdown, so I'm good there.
what's the problem?
@Moshe you're not dangrossman

Whoops

Deja vu, new competitors for the Darwin award... projected 8.6 foot tsunami waves will reach California's coasts in the next 30 mins or so... beaches closed and evacuated hours ago... live video shows tourists jogging on the sand.

it's possible they just don't know

@DanGrossman waitaminute, they're still predicting nearly 3m waves for CA?

3:44 PM
That's what the guy on CNN just said

@drachenstern Well, let's see... there's no way to break down rep gain by day, week or month unless you enter it by hand, which is a PITA - the textbox won't accept anything not strictly YYYY/MM/DD, with leading zeros and all

I didn't know about 9/11 untill neary 14 hours after it happened (being in school all day)

@tombull89 Eek. I was in school too. My world history teacher said "history is happening", pulled a TV into her room and told us to watch the news for class.

what textbox again?
@DanGrossman I was driving to morning classes when it happened, after seeing it on the news when the first plane had already hit the first tower, then was moments from school when the second one hit, then spent the next 30 minutes in the cafeteria, then in class we barely reviewed anything through about 1, after which professors decided it was a good day to continue being strong.

@DanGrossman Smart teacher.

3:47 PM
@drachenstern You know, that's not the replacement for the /recent page - if you notice a +10 change to your rep, you're not going to care that there's a +10 change in your rep, which is all that popup shows, but which post that +10 happened on - which apparently is now accessible through profile?tab=reputation

@YiJiang Indeed it won't.

@YiJiang you will care. I won't.

@DanGrossman I was in English class, listening to a lecture about rhetoric. The guest speaker actually tried to involve what was going on on TV for a few minutes before giving up and watching with us. Later we found out we were like, the only school in the system where the principal gave permission to turn on TVs/radios/&c.

and I do know that it's not a replacement for that page, but hearing how they've structured things on the backend, I'm surprised the site was ever responsive in the first place.

3:50 PM
CNN reporting on Japan's nuclear reactors... "LIVE FROM MOSCOW". Thanks CNN. That's exactly where your reporters should be to cover this disaster.

I would if it were my choice :p

@drachenstern You won't, but I think you can see that a lot of people do

@YiJiang I do.
I also remember exactly how much I pay for this service, per day.
I don't go ranting and raving at Randall Munroe if he happens to have a family crisis going on either

@YiJiang It's a now.

@PopularDemand Presumably the first user who noticed this thought its a bug, but meh, it has been a for 10 hours now

@TimStone I didn't mention something on the bug yest. That really applies to all situations, such as the occasional [/me something ] that doesn't get formatted correctly. Perhaps a global .val().trim() or something at the top?

So here's where we should come to bitch

that there wasn't a major change to the rep-calculation rules rolled out at the same time, quiet-like, so as to be overshadowed by the shit-storm that is EnvelopeGate.

Oh, another : next time the rep rules are changed, instead of, say, halving the question value, double the answer value. People will complain a lot less about getting more rep, even if you adjust the privilege thresholds and other vote values to match. (@... @balpha, I guess? @RebeccaChernoff?)

I mean, did they? I presume they would... sometime... no time set though

@YiJiang Exactly what I was thinking. Ah, such a wasted opportunity...

Nice. Thanks @TimStone I'll see if that broke anything as I go through the options

@YiJiang I kinda think Jeff's still waiting for someone to step up and point out why it's a terrible idea. Can't be sure though. Jeff is occasionally subtle like that.

4:12 PM
@drachenstern nods Hopefully it should be alright.

@RebeccaChernoff Ah, thanks!

@DanGrossman Earthquakes do make for some spectacular photographs. They would actually be kinda cool, if they didn't, you know, ruin people's lives.

@PopularDemand indeed

Stackoverflow.com is running slow this morning

@DanGrossman Don't blink or you won't see it coming.
I guess that person decided that if there is a tsunami coming his way, he's screwed anyway, might as well be front and center.

@badpssockpuppet ...that, or he doesn't watch the news in the morning, was on his way to work and thought "Nobody's on the beach? It's my lucky day!" and called in sick to enjoy his good fortune.

@PopularDemand what I can't figure out for reals is how the hell that got 16 upvotes. I'm all afloored.

4:26 PM
@drachenstern If it makes you feel better, I didn't star it. (It probably doesn't, though; that just leads to the uncomfortable question "wait, this room has seen 18 users since March 7?")

@PopularDemand And a few sock puppets

Argh, does anyone know offhand how to check which branch you're currently using in Subversion?

Nah, this room has over 20 lurking or active atm. I expect it's probably had 40 in that time. And I don't feel bad or better that you didn't star it. It was a joke. It had meta references and puns. I was proud of myself.
@PopularDemand in Hg I could answer that very quickly :p

Reuters: More than 300 people killed and 500 missing following Japan quake

@DanGrossman That makes me want to comment, "just 300"?

4:33 PM
I can't tell if that's awesome or what. I'm going to go with Awesome because there's no way I could trump the laws of physics and applied chemical bonds are awesome.

The headline you won't be reading: "Millions saved in Japan by good engineering and government building codes". Buts it's the truth.

"Oh, that's not such a big deal after all. I was picturing deaths by the millions"

@badpssockpuppet awkward but true.

I'm worried about the guy with the dog on the beach. It looked like the waves were receding a bit... which happens before a big one comes in...

@DanGrossman so you're familiar with that beach are you?
I honestly have no clue what any beach looks like on a regular basis, enough to say "oh those waters are recedent"

4:37 PM
No, but I've had its video up for over an hour
The Hawaii feeds made it obvious, coral reefs (that are normally underwater) were completely exposed before the tsunami wave came in
They're literally running from the tide
now off screen :/

4:51 PM
I love it. I implemented the work in the fogbugz ticket, and now I'm asked why I didn't read his mind and apply those changes to two other pages while I was at it. Lovely.
@$^#$@()*%)#@$% cos it wasn't in the workorder @#($*@#($

I read that as fizzbuzz ticket. I was confused.

hehehe
that might be another interesting way to do things

@DanGrossman That's not much of a headline because good governance and solid construction are what should always be true. But yes, it's certainly a good thing that they actually are true in practice.

I'm just waiting for things that occur on other pages to break now. I know that it is going to happen. But I'm doing it his way, so he can't complain that it breaks.

5:08 PM
Wow. Over 200 upvotes and no downvotes. That's an achievement for any post.

@PopularDemand Let me fix that.
Seriously, who used that envelope anyway? I could barely keep up with the "maximum 90 days allowed" messages since the SuperDropdown has come
I'd rather see stuff that matters with a +200 score

I recently started using it.
The real tragedy here is the 1800 meta reps being flushed down the tubes. ^_^

@badpssockpuppet I did. But I'm not especially attached to it.

heh, on one of the CNN video feeds there's a guy on a surfboard waiting for the wave...

@tombull89 :lol:

5:17 PM
jeepers when did the @ notification noise change?

I use the envelope regularly... its one of the two buttons I click on the SE sites: Questions and Envelope :)
It's nice for people who don't spend a whole lot of time on the SE sites, or who only answer the occasional question

I don't see what the fuss is all about. The drop down is a nice idea - when it fully completed it will be even better ;) They should have maybe kept it so when you click your name it went to your profile.

@tombull89 The noise changed?

You can't keep things the same forever - you'll get left behind.

Well, it is different here than on chat.SE..

5:21 PM
@TimStone I think so.
different per site?

chat.SE, chat.SO, and chat.MSO all have different sounds.

ah that would explain it.
SF as well?

I'm not sure if the sound is still different per-site on chat.SE, I don't think so, but I could be wrong.

no it's not

There, straight from the expert's mouth ;)

5:24 PM
@Rachel You can see replies from the StackExchange dropdown too, much more conveniently too.

ah I rarely have sound turned on as it is, only as I'm streaming news I noticed.
cheers guys ^_^

I swear Stack Exchange is pulling a Facebook.
But only a little.
Oh, wait, Popular demand already said that.

@badpssockpuppet How? I didn't see it in the dropdown

SHould have looked.

@Rachel "inbox"

5:28 PM
: "Working hard so others can be lazy."

@badpssockpuppet I don't have an Inbox link in the dropdown...

Wow, we haven't had a "the rep cap isn't working" post in a while.

@PopularDemand It even snuck a bit of envelope talk in there too (for good measure).

How come the question that cannot be named has not been locked/closed? Surely it is subjective/argumentative?

@Barry which question?

Q: Does anyone like clicking twice to go to your profile?

WesleiI didn't like clicking twice on my name in header to go to the profile with the new version. I think that small window should appear only when clicking the down arrow at the left of my name and the click on the name should lead you to your profile... Noone agrees? :-(

Although that post does bring up a good point (indirectly), /recent showed reputation lost your own down votes right? The reputation tab can't (or at least doesn't) do that, so no link back to those posts. I wonder if that's important...

@mootinator Four votes so far... I wonder what the most quickly closed post ever is.

heh

5:33 PM
@Barry Well, clearly the change isn't done, so feedback is feedback, heh.

@PopularDemand Whatever it is, Jeff probably holds it

@DanGrossman any more news on that ship?

@badpssockpuppet I meant without diamond intervention.

@MylesGray Why??? Of the thousands of ships lost or destroyed, why do you want news on that one?

The one with 100 people on board?

5:35 PM
@PopularDemand In that case, probably something linked in here, heh.

@TimStone Hmm suppose so. :-/

Oh, and since I'm cranky

@Barry Most people are just upset, but that doesn't mean there aren't things to be taken away (even if in some cases it involves sifting through some ranting)

I voted to close that question as noise or pointless, as it detracts from actually important stuff.

I imagine that if I made a post titled "why are there two links to the 'privs' page now" it'd get locked, eh?

5:37 PM
like this change, which I find pretty bad:

@CanSpice I think that'd be a duplicate, actually.
Or at least I know that someone mentioned it somewhere..

@TimStone: ah, fair enough. It's probably in That Thread somewhere.
also I feel bad because I've downvoted Jeff twice in the past two days :(

I hope they leave the one in the drop down though, as I've repurposed the link on the reputation number itself to go to /reputation.

(for the "OMG WHY DO YOU NEVER ANNOUNCE CHANGES" series, you know)

@badpssockpuppet Fair enough, but the situation will only deteriorate if the post actually gets closed. Someone will post a dupe, others will reopen, overall complaining will increase by 15%....

5:38 PM
@PopularDemand If Jeff closes it then sure it will.
If 5 bozos decide to close it then meh, 5 more enraged users will reopen it.

I'm half-seriously writing a question along the lines of "how much of a democracy is this?" in my head.

Ya know, this isn't really the right duplicate to close as meta.stackoverflow.com/questions/82757/… - that post doesn't touch on clicking twice while there's another one that does. (;

@CanSpice Well, I don't think you have to feel bad about that. :P
@RebeccaChernoff There's like three others that do, aren't there? Heheh.

@TimStone: I just imagine he has some little widget on his desktop that blinks when someone downvotes him, so he can twirl his moustache and laugh manaically and go 'DOWNVOTE ME, WILL YOU?'

lmao

5:41 PM
@CanSpice He had one, then he removed the link to it. snicker

lol

@badpssockpuppet I'm not keen on that idea either. Although I do see some benefit in a way. Maybe implemented differently - If most of your rep is only from questions then reduce the amount of rep earned on question upvotes to say 2 until your ratio improves.

@Barry I just don't see the problem with having a Q:A ratio below 1:2

I don't like rep caps on questions. Punish people because they're good at asking questions?
enforcing a Q:A ratio reminds me of torrent trackers, and that's not a good thing.

@TimStone There are some positives from the question but I feel most of is it just noise. It needs to edited until it is pretty much a new question (which will probably get rolled back anyway) If all the goodness was taken out and asked as a new question then fair enough. :)

5:43 PM
yet, if you get more than "~25%" rep from questions than you do from answers, you're going to see a big percentage of rep vanishing - again

@Barry Yeah, I just decided to accept people's responses as an inevitability for the moment, heh.

and unlike last time, this change has been triggered by a user "about" to get 10k rep without posting a single answer.
To address 3 people how many more are you going to offset?
I think it's ridicolous.
Aarobot loves it though.

@badpssockpuppet I guess its personal pref. I think that the if there is a user who has asked 400+ question and not really answered any - is that really fair? I know there is nothing wrong with it in terms of using the site but I feel that maybe they should help a few other people out (like people have been helping them out)

@Barry I don't know about fair, but I know about a practical example:

@badpssockpuppet Admittedly, I do feel like there's the potential for there to be serious issues with that. But after thinking about the whole scenario, trying to say "Well, given X, the problem is Y" is really trying to go about it the wrong way, so I agree that it's a bad idea.

@Barry Will reducing that person's rep make them answer questions? No...

@badpssockpuppet Although having said that If I fell in to that group of users I would be pretty annoyed :)

5k rep. 98 questions. 84 answers. 3k rep from questions, 2k rep from answers. Penalty Cut: 2k rep.
I wouldn't think he's a problem user, quite the contrary honestly. Gaming is in a serious shortage of questions.

+14/-7! I'm well on my way to the hypothetical Controversial badge.

@DanGrossman You are right - no. But maybe if they were notified "You are only receiving 2 rep per question up vote as your q/a ratio is x" they might. but then again they might not be bothered :)

Yet, due to three bozos on SO nearing an arbitrary threshold of activity...

Since really, the problem isn't that people get reputation from questions, it's that certain people are getting a lot of reputation and those people happen to be serious help vampires.

@badpssockpuppet They wouldn't get cut though would they? I thought it was it aimed at users with poor Q/A ratios?

@Barry Uh, neither Jeff or Waffles mention that
If you get more than 500 rep from questions per 2k rep from answers you're going to be cut.

@badpssockpuppet Maybe I have made that up my head.... I wouldn't put it past me

With a bonus allowance of 500 rep from questions for free.

5:51 PM
Oh well that is a bit silly. I thought it was based on Q/A ratios. e.g Asked 450 questions - answered 3. that kind of thing

isn't about stopping users that ask lousy questions. Isn't about stopping users that ask "too many" questions. Isn't about stopping pity-voting.

@Barry That would just cause people to leave lousy answers in order to get 100% of their question rep (in theory)

@Shog9 What is it about then.

is about preventing high-rep question-heavy users. That's it. The beginning and end of it.

"500" being high rep?

5:54 PM
You can get 2000 rep from editing (in theory) why would the free rep for questions be any less than that?

Not sure why Waffles brought the 500 thing in. 2K was a much more interesting cut-off. Then again, 2K is where you start getting real privileges on the site, so cutting short of that makes some sense. But... why not 1.5K?
@mootinator Because, upon reaching 2k you can edit anything (almost). Which makes a ton of sense if you actually make a thousand good edits to get there. Not so much if you've just posted a ton of questions.

"The headline you won't see?" nytimes.com/2011/03/12/world/asia/…

@mootinator *1000 rep
unless it was changed since introduction

ton. ton. tonne. tounne. tung.

@Shog9 The "500 thing" has got a checkmark from Jeff, so it's going to become very real very soon

5:57 PM
As Jon has said in his answer - I don't see what the problem is. They obviously decent questions otherwise they wouldn't be getting to 10K in rep?

@badpssockpuppet Didn't he post the bounty after he accepted it though? I thought that was kind of odd.
Oh, definitely not.

What bothers me is that there are two ways to get 500 reputation, 10 good questions (average of 10 upvotes) or 100 meh questions (average of 1 upvote)

clearly pays attention

Who's going to get capped faster?
(Aarobot believes this point is completely meritless)
but in my view, with any sort of cap, the better questions you ask, the faster you stop gaining rep from them.
I don't think that makes any sense.
Maybe it's just me.

@badpssockpuppet That's a very good point. So if they are going to implement it - do you think they should disregard questions with say 5 or more up votes?

5:59 PM
@Barry «@Jose, I am not sure about that ... stackoverflow.com/questions/2193953/flash-cs4-refuses-to-let-go – waffles♦ Mar 7 at 5:56»

Go for users that ask lots and lots of questions that get one or two up votes?
