8:01 PM
@NathanTaylor we're up to Web 3.0 now

@NathanTaylor I'm afraid links are good ole Web 0.1 stuff :)
The webbier the web gets the less links it gets... :(

@Zypher I've been using the 4.0 beta

I mean, there only are 174 links on this page. Disappointing!

@NathanTaylor Only 1 in 5? Lies: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/AllBlueEntry
2

@NickT hahaha nice find

8:10 PM
Comes from much experience on that site. Almost don't confuse MediaWiki and pmwiki syntax anymore

@RebeccaChernoff That's some serious blasphemy right there.
@balpha = win

Today I've been mostly recalculating my reputation

@ChrisF what you do on your own time, buddy, what you do on your own time...

8:19 PM
@TimStone Burning man?

@GeorgeMarian Hahah

I also noticed the new splitting of close vote types

@TimStone >_<

@balpha I say mostly - but it took all of 5 minutes

allo @ChrisF

8:22 PM
Evenin' @Rebecca

@RebeccaChernoff If @jleedev installs it, I suppose we can forgive him

@TimStone teehee

@TylerChacha did anyone answer this for you? You need "Lorem Ipsum" google it

@PopularDemand Pro tip right there.

8:23 PM
@PopularDemand thank you, but I wanted him to google it :p and also I didn't know if anyone told him already

@drachenstern I don't think anyone did tell him. That site is probably the first result, explains what it is and provides a generator. What's the point of Googling?

In publishing and graphic design, lorem ipsum[[#References|[p]]] is placeholder text (filler text) commonly used to demonstrate the graphic elements of a document or visual presentation, such as font, typography, and layout. The lorem ipsum text is typically a section of a Latin text by Cicero with words altered, added and removed that make it nonsensical in meaning and not proper Latin. "What does the filler text "lorem ipsum" mean?", Cecil Adams, The Straight Dope, February 2001, webpage: [http://www.straightdope.com/columns/read/2290/what-does-the-filler-text-lorem-ipsum-mean ...
bah, now you've gone and made me do it ;)

who wants to add "Link or it didn't happen"?

Q: Misuese of reputation

santoshI have found several times that people misused there reputation in closing the question on stackoverflow.

bah, @drachenstern is too fast ):

I blame my afternoon sleepiness.

8:27 PM
@ChrisF I liked the word "Misuese". Sounds French.

WTF Firefox and your 1.2GB RAM consumption. Unacceptable!

@TimStone chat?

I'm normally thoroughly unamused by Welbog, but I liked his revision comment:
> Misusing my reputation to combat your inability to use tags.

@balpha My FF is at 220M. (Sorry, typo.)

@balpha It starts out at under a fourth of that, so it seems there's some leak somewhere or the other. I suppose I should try switching chat over to Chrome and see if the problem corrects itself.

8:30 PM
@TimStone wait a sec

waits

Asked: 10 minutes ago, Edited: 5 minutes ago, Closed: 2 minutes ago, bahahaha priceless

@TimStone put $("<div id='debug-messages' />").appendTo("#chat").show(); into your JS console, then say //cash (yes, double-slash). This will freeze your browser for a while, but hopefully after that you get a message in the box under the chat

8:35 PM
I sometimes feel sorry for people who go to Meta to complain about the treatment their questions received on SO. It usually results in more pain - down-votes and closure.

And not the good kind of closure.

/cash
Oh, lawlz
Foiled by our own userscript

hehe

@ChrisF Yes, but it's so entertaining.

@TimStone hahahaha

8:37 PM
@GeorgeMarian I must admit to being entertained too ;)

@balpha Ah, very nice. Unfortunately I had already restarted Firefox prior to you saying that, but if it climbs back up I'll check again. :)
Admittedly, if it were chat's fault, I'd suspect the userscript over anything else, but. ;P

Jin
anyone on ubuntu here?

@TimStone I showed my process info!

@Jin that almost sounds like ubuntu is a drug
you trying to push to kids in schoolzones now?

8:40 PM
@RebeccaChernoff Heheh, but I have a tab open for each room I'm in, and Firefox may not be so well behaved.

@Zypher s/drung/drug

@Jin At the risk of being ridiculed, I'll admit to being on Ubuntu.

ridicules @GeorgeMarian

Jin
ok i'm just trying to see if anyone can repro meta.gamedev.stackexchange.com/questions/329/…
@balpha just told me he can repro it.

And, I have to be honest, we didn't stress-test the userscript, so if there was something wrong, I'd feel wrong blaming chat first ;)

8:41 PM
@TimStone minor detail.

@GeorgeMarian @MichaelMrozek went silent again, you're safe (for now)

@TimStone You probably just woke the beast. |:

@Jin I also see white.

Q: The reputation recalc page has direct side effects based only on GET data (and not POST)

KopThis is bad because if I do ![alt text][1] [1]: http://stackoverflow.com/reputation?recalc=true in a post, then whoever visits the post will have their reputation recalculated.

8:43 PM
@RebeccaChernoff It's OK, if there's a problem we'll just blame Yi Jiang.
@RebeccaChernoff It was a risk I was willing to take, as there was no risk to me.

Jin
@PopularDemand can you see the image here? sstatic.net/gamedev/img/bg-header.jpg

@TimStone I'm ok with this.

@Jin 404

** total rep 3000 :)
nice even number that ended up on...

@jin Yup, I see a lot of white. The links aren't visible (white on white). (I'm on Minefield BTW 4.0b8pre)

8:45 PM
@GeorgeMarian cough beta ... what's the policy on beta browsers?

@RebeccaChernoff I figured you would be. That, or we could blame @MichaelMrozek, didn't he submit a line here or there too?

@TimStone He did indeed.

@Zypher Heh. Like I care. If it wasn't an issue in my beta browser, I would've fired up FF3.6 to verify the bug report. :P
Oh, and someone else has chimed in as well. :)

@Zypher We should check with Jeff to be sure.

haha
he won't be up for another hour

8:48 PM
@RebeccaChernoff We should phrase it in the form of a maths question, so he'll really be happy to answer.
@GeorgeMarian Works on My Machine. ;)

@TimStone with lots of Ss
Also, I call not it on actually being the one to ask him. q:

So, "Why is the SE staff Sabotaging our website, don't they realize that HIGHLY respected maths profesors MUST use the beta browsers and because they are HIGHLY respected you MUST change your stance"

Me too. :P

ehh i'll wait till the new year

Jin
ok can anyone else(non ubuntu users) see the header on gamedev.stackexchange.com ?

8:50 PM
@Zypher lol

Jin
i'm seeing it.. even cleared the cache and hard refreshed

yes

@Jin Works fine for me.

@Jin I see it fine.

worked on Fedora 14

Jin
8:50 PM
very very odd...

Ctrl-F5?

@Jin Fine on Chrome

@Jin, do we need to spin the WOB?

but i just dropped off the network to verify it's not because i'm vpn'd in

Jin

8:51 PM
@Jin Also works fine in Ubuntu running in Virtual Box for me (not that there should have been any logical reason it wouldn't)

@Zypher I worked at a university IT help desk. This sounds vaguely familiar.

Jin
WOB hurtz feelingz

@RebeccaChernoff We always need to spin the WOB

WOB?

Jin
8:52 PM
@ChrisF btw i'm posting the design mockup for programmers.se soon.

@RebeccaChernoff oh. Where's that?

@NickT Think Pat Sajack, but with a more accusatory nature.

@Jin Great. I was beginning to wonder if it was next.

@TimStone Wheel... Of... Blame-shun?!

Jin
@ChrisF hopefully we'll launch it this week.

8:53 PM
@Jin I don't think I've seen you on this WOB, so you're safe. q:

@Jin Does it have a code monkey?

@Jin what about DIY & UI? Are their figures too low to allow for full launches yet?

Oh, I take it back. You are on it.

Jin
@ChrisF they'll need to be in Beta for a bit longer. there are other sites that have better stats than them.

@mootinator That works
@ChrisF I wish UI had more traffic. I signed up the other day, but the question list kind of sluggishly drags along..

8:54 PM
@Jin Thought so, but nice to get confirmation. I'll pass it along if anyone asks

@Jin source?
@Jin will you give us first crack? :)

Game Recommendations

Proposed Q&A site for expert and amateur gamers who want to get game recommendations in different game styles and tastes

Currently in commitment.

That was quick

@jin I just checked the gf's pc. That header image 404's on her Windows machine as well. (And, in my VM.)

should be fixed now
geoff did his magic

8:58 PM
Oh noes I gained 2 points of rep by doing a recalc

@balpha Ah, that it is. What was the problem?

\o/ Geoff

Or lost them, I'm not sure which, actually.

sstatic.net is actually several servers, and one of them was missing that image, so depending on which server you hit, you got it or you didn't

damn servers ):

8:59 PM
@balpha Ah, the joys of mirroring (or not in this case)

Ah, the down side of clustering/load-balancing.

Hmm, just noticed something

Hooray coincidence!

@YiJiang really doesn't need to add @Zypher to the WOB. He's already on there. Whenever it is the server's fault, it is his gravatar.

9:01 PM
Somebody yell for me a while back?

hides

Well? Still needed?

Oh, heh. Wrong "M" name.

Hahahah

9:03 PM
1 hour ago, by Tyler Chacha
@marcGravell WE NEED YOU!!!
I guess not, I don't see @TylerChacha around atm

@MarcGravell Presumably it was something inane anyway (which is why @PopularDemand just ran away), so I think you're safe getting back to whatever more important stuff you were doing. :P
It's Jin's holiday miracle!
lmao at the picture caption:
> "Even if they're not on solid foods yet, your progeny shouldn't be deprived of the joys of bacon. Soft and snuggly with big giant eyes, My First Bacon is both friendly and reliable, just like actual bacon."

Jin
i love My First Bacon
it talks too

:D

I'm bacon!

Jin
9:16 PM
i really need to pay Thinkgeek HQ a visit.. it's only like 10mins away from my house

@Jin Take pictures!

Jin
it'd be funny if all the employees there are stuffed monkeys.

> Former Sun CEO Scott McNealy talks to The Reg on where things went wrong, and acquisition by Oracle: 'We probably got a little too aggressive near the end and probably open sourced too much and tried too hard to appease the community and tried too hard to share,' McNealy said. 'You gotta take care of your shareholders or you end up very vulnerable like we got. We were a wonderful acquisition — we got stolen for a song at the bottom of the Dow.'
Right, because Larry Ellison needs more reason to act like a complete tool.

SOCK MONKAY
I don't come to chat to interact with people, I just randomly interject things.
Apparently.

9:21 PM
:P

@mootinator Did you just say, SOCK MONDAY?
I like the idea.

@radp I am vaguely frightened by the idea.

@radp barefoot except socks on Mondays while in the office?
@mootinator no no, we're not saying if you work from home that's all you can wear ... banish the thought (unless you're female and undeniably, universally cute, then I don't think anyone will complain)

@drachenstern whew
@drachenstern There's already Topless Wednesday and No-Pants Friday for that anyhow.

hahaha, fb message: copy this text and put it in your status somewhere if you know someone or have heard of someone who knows someone. If you don't know anyone or even if you've just heard of someone who doesn't know anyone still do this. It's important to spread teh message. And the hearts!! ♥ ♥ ♥ for heavens sakes don't forget the hearts ♥ ♥ ♥
@mootinator So what you're saying is ....

9:24 PM
@drachenstern "I'm a troll and I just got you."

@drachenstern I saw that yesterday. It was lacking in unicorns.

@mootinator I only saw it today, so there's that...
@radp nonsense! ;)

"jQuery mainly?" was a nice touch in this one

@MichaelMrozek Ah - how sweet

@MichaelMrozek $(document).exchangeStack(); Done.

9:28 PM
@drachenstern I remember random old tweets.
Topless Wednesday! Everyone celebrating?

9:47 PM
o:
@Kevin is in quite sharing mood today hehe

Hahah, indeed.

Q: Revise the community wiki policy, or enforce it better

orokusakiI say "or" in the title because I've not read the exact policy. My concern is with the implementation of whatever policy is in place. It feels very reminiscent of a socialist government. When a great invention is created the innovator isn't regarded as having created a success which they can then...

Hahahahah

10:03 PM
It pisses me off when people have to start a comment with "Wrong." As if that's enough to be a complete sentence. It's always followed by a statement that would've stood alone just fine.
-1
A: Why are variables "i" and "j" used for counters?

ThomasI use 'c' so that I can write "c++" in code. (for integers post/pre-increment doesn't matter)

"Wrong." with a "You Idiot." next reply.

They like to open a wound in you first before they rub salt in it.

Wrong. Starting the sententance with 'Wrong' is used to re-enforce the fact that you are very very wrong without actually wasting the bits

@DanGrossman That drives me crazy too. Also when people start questions with "Question:"

"Wrong" is a waste of characters. That's why the Apache mailing list invented "-1".

@RebeccaChernoff His reply..... shakes head

10:08 PM
@MichaelMrozek You know what grinds my gears?

@TimStone Heh.

Can someone get the last close vote on the post he linked to?

@TimStone Oh, I didn't realize it was a duplicate, I thought people were closing it as off-topic again, which is nonsense

@MichaelMrozek Yeah, heh. Not very surprising that someone felt the need to ask that before either.

Once a post gets to like 50 upvotes SO should pop up a dialog when a user tries to upvote with "Is this post seriously that amazing?"
8

10:20 PM
I wonder if closing the post makes us Super Socialists.

F**king customers. I hate them all.
2

We won't tell them you said that. Well, I won't, at least. I can't vouch for the others.

At least 1 in 5 declined charges from failing address verification turns into a string of e-mails about how we've stolen their money.
Two days later when the declined charge disappears from their online banking's pending charge list they shut up.

Heh

They always threaten to call their banks. Call them! Please! Call them instead of me so they can explain it to you!

10:26 PM
@DanGrossman lol

Hrm. Why do people write a question containing only a SQL query to fix, but tag it with a bunch of programming languages...

well I recalced my SO and MSO accounts, and I lost points (~50 each) ... for shame ... Oh well, it's just points on a screen, sure I'll get 'em back in no time. Like when I beg for shameless upvotes for awesome FHCs ;)

You were a point thief!

hey I had nothing to do with that! ;)

@drachenstern Yes, I was rather disappointed I got no up votes for pulling out the hot dog stand themed flair. :( Hahah

10:35 PM
oh ffs database, can't you figure out what I mean? sheesh, six stupid little rows out of 32000 ... stopping my insert for duplicates on a select distinct ...

Speaking of databases...
I really need to stop procrastinating and decide whether I'm moving to RDS or not. I'm wasting $21 a day running double the instances in parallel the past week.

Q: Design Ideas for Programmers Site

JinHi all. I'm Jin, and I'll be working on the designs for the Stack Exchange sites as they graduate from the beta phase. Each site will have its own unique theme that will reflect its topic. However, all sites will share quite a bit of common elements so they feel like they're part of the Stack Exc...

:shivers:

@Jin Where are youuuuuuu?

10:52 PM
Looks fairly sterile, I guess programmers are like that though

lmao, that we are
