In case anyone is playing the Nexus S game:
Puzzle Challenge #2: There is more than meets the eye at http://goo.gl/MKoc8. You'll find the answer in a tweet.

You never gave me the answer to the first one!
q:

SO's flair is weird o:

@RebeccaChernoff you're telling me

@drachenstern, stackflair.com ! (:

@RebeccaChernoff I should have totally just posted that as the answer.

5:10 PM
Hehe

@TimStone still doesn't solve their being bad does it? ;)

No, but you tagged the question as [support] instead of [bug], so. :P

StackFlair > SOFlair if I may say so. (;

status-supported
@RebeccaChernoff You may say so, but no one will believe you until you get rid of that mysterious extra set of eyes.

@TimStone look again sir, wanted to confirm the bug before reporting the bug

5:13 PM
I have verified your maths. :P

Hello
@moshe What was that link for?

@drachenstern re: your comment, I would have expected the same.

My Triton notepage with some thoughts
@balpha - I'm going to be following now. I don't use Youtube enough to know about the secret videos though... This will be rough going.

@Moshe Triton stores all data on your computer

Oh meh.
hang on

5:19 PM
i'm hoping to get sync working soon enough though..

Ok

that would allow you to sync your notes to a server, and possibly to someone else's client

@RebeccaChernoff It was CREAMPUFF

Um, what?

@RebeccaChernoff The first Nexus S puzzle
The first answer was posted on the Nexus Twitter page. Creampuff.

5:22 PM
Oh, lol.

Creampuff was the answer.

Yeah, ok, I got it now.

@RebeccaChernoff cool

What should the Android release after Honeycomb and Ice Cream be called?
probably Jellybean or something lame like that
K...

@NickT - Candy Apple, unless that's too close to Apple.
"Oooh, look at me, I'm Google, I'm a Candy Apple, not a lame gray one on a white background."

5:29 PM
Apple's older Apple logo was multicolored

Err, what happened to Gingerbread?

@RebeccaChernoff It was released two days ago?

I ate it, because I'm hungry. @PopularDemand That too.

And they've already named the next two?

5:30 PM
Yep.

Krispy Kreme maybe

(Look at me, pretending to be all "in touch" with consumer electronics news. I only knew that because I went to Wikipedia to find out what names A-G were.)
Krispy Kreme has got to be a trademark. Kandy korn?

Oh, I see. There's a naming scheme. I thought they were just random.

Kruller?

5:32 PM
Now it isn't as surprising they're naming ahead. >_<

Kettlechips.

@TimStone Not sweet.
Kettle korn, on the other hand....

@PopularDemand I don't have a problem with that, they're still delicious.

Actually, that probably is a trademark, too. Kettle corn is probably generic though.

And that's really all that matters when naming software projects.

5:34 PM
All software projects must be named after delicious items?

Working on Triton's Typography!

What were a & b?

@PopularDemand It'd work for me.

@TimStone I wonder if tigers, panthers and snow leopards taste good.

@PopularDemand I'm not a big Mac fan, so the trend would hold if they weren't.

5:37 PM
How do I get a bug to go from [status-norepro] back to open? I reported the bug about 6 months ago with detailed steps to reproduce, and it's still happening in all browsers...

Q: Human verification removed code formatting

adam0101On a recent post of mine I included a code block that was formatted correctly in the preview, but was rendered as regular text after I had to go through the human verification screen. Can this be fixed? Here's the post where I saw it: http://stackoverflow.com/posts/2950682/revisions It's been m...

@NathanTaylor I would imagine that you'd have to provide steps that someone on the team can repro with.

Well that's the problem, it was marked no-repro before i added the steps
I can consistently recreate it, and I challenge you to do the same if you're interested.

@NathanTaylor It doesn't matter; someone on the team needs to be able to repro it. If they can't see it, how can they track it down or know whether it's fixed?

@PopularDemand That's totally fine, but how do I get them to try it again? It has remained completely ignored ever since it was marked norepro. I tried downvoting Jeff Atwood's follow-up stating they couldn't create it in order to get his attention, but that went unnoticed.

crackle @balpha to aisle 89, customer needs assistance, @balpha to aisle 89.

5:46 PM
Between my answer and a comment debating Jeff's 'could not reproduce' I have 5 upvotes on the bug. I'm not crazy :|

@NathanTaylor Don't forget, you came here to chat and got a star, too!

@NathanTaylor I added some votes, and flagged for the mod to remove the erroneous tag.

@LanceRoberts Thanks, I appreciate that

I don't understand why would you expect tab characters to cause code formatting, @NathanTaylor

Mmm I have enough privaledge to retag it, that may help too
@balpha because they do. As far as the markdown formatter is concerned, 4 spaces and tabs are interchangable. The problem is that the Human Verification wizard removes tabs from the request, but has no problem with 4 spaces.

5:49 PM
hmm, looks like you're right

@NathanTaylor wait... human verification wizard?

one more proof that tabs as indention are evil...

@radp wizard/control/sequence, whatever you want to call it

@NathanTaylor You can't stop me now. I've started on my quest to find a relevant funny picture and even if I'm on a cellular network I shall bring it to you!

5:52 PM
@RebeccaChernoff Sure, it does say that. But try copy pasting a block of indented code into the editor and you'll see that it gets formatted.

@radp A quest to find a wizard, eh? How cliche.
@NathanTaylor I think you missed her point.
Just because something happens to work doesn't mean that it's the way you're supposed to do it or that it's supported. Stack Exchange Markdown is not 100% equivalent to "standard" Markdown.

@PopularDemand I get it, it says what to do and doesn't suggest that tabs are an alternative, but the point is that you can enter code with tabs, see it in the preview formatted as you expect it, then post and your formatting is gone.

@NathanTaylor If you want them to make the preview match up with the final version, I'm okay with that, but you'll have to get in line behind some existing similar bugs.
I think I may have even posted one of them myself.

Wait, where is the issue? If you do it and you don't get prompted for human verification then does it post formatted? In other words, is it only when the human verification step interrupts?

yes

5:55 PM
@RebeccaChernoff Correct

which is by design
:)
I don't know why

The error lies in the human verification step's handling of the request data. It does not respect the '\t' character and it converts it into a single space instead.

Ooooookay. I thought we were talking about a markdown issue, but really it isn't at all.

I know where the error is
I have the code before me
I just don't know if it's an error

and yet you're not going to change it? (;

5:56 PM
Intriguing

@NathanTaylor, let the buttering up of @balpha begin!

I've actually mentioned the issue to @JeffAtwood in this chat room before, but he shrugged it off completely.

@balpha I believe that if the same text is processed in two different places in two different ways, that is the definition of inconsistency. A program should be consistent. Do I need to quote Hoare?

@balpha - Did you try the second puzzle yet?
I'm not sure if I finished it yet.

5:58 PM
@PopularDemand This is a markdown issue. @NathanTaylor's is not.

@NathanTaylor - He shrugs everything off.

@RebeccaChernoff I know. I was supporting an earlier point.

@drachenstern Are you kidding me? I'm trying to help, find out why this is happening, tell you I found it, and you give me that?

@Moshe Must be due to his God-status :p

I assume there's a reason for that code, so I won't just go in there and say "screw it, that's stupid, I'll delete that"

6:00 PM
@balpha And that's why your coworkers don't hate you :p

@balpha oh I know, I wanted the quote to be in reference, so used the reply-to function. wasn't intended to be a bash on you. more like a bash on the code and a potential argument for the SOIS team.

oh well, the relevant funny screenie is someplace in ted.com/talks/david_pogue_says_simplicity_sells.html
you'll know it when you'll see it.

@drachenstern okay then, all good

@balpha I do that all the time. Of course, the code is generally ridiculously stupid and I'm generally right...but...

@RebeccaChernoff at least that makes it easy to /blame rchern

6:03 PM
@RebeccaChernoff No one would ever suggest otherwise :)

@balpha, eh, no need to blame me when what I do fixes things. (:

Clearly we should convert tabs to four spaces on paste :P
comes in way after the conversation due to lunch preparation

It gets interesting when it is my code from when I first started here as an intern.

@RebeccaChernoff Sure there is. We might fall out of practice.

@TimStone Don't lie. Was it NFS or Minecraft?

6:05 PM
@RebeccaChernoff s/\/\/.*$/\/\/ oy/gm is not "fixing" things
2

@RebeccaChernoff It was definitely cheesesticks.

@balpha >_<
utter lies!

@balpha that's ascii art pretending to look like a vim command right? My brain bleeds.

also, most code here is vb.net, heh.

@radp no, that's a regex saying "replace anything coming after two slashes with oy "

6:07 PM
@balpha yeah, I finally figured it out after I saw the unescaped slash

@RebeccaChernoff had you included an oy that would've been a perfect response ;)

doesn't vim also accept commands with a different character than / to separate arguments?

@drachenstern heh.

@RebeccaChernoff ;) :D

I thought something like :s+//.*$+// oy+gm would've worked too, although I don't recall vimtutor very well.

@TimStone It is just an accident that that controller is right there, eh?

and a PEN!

@RebeccaChernoff When I'm done playing games I return immediately to my desk. :P
@radp Sorry, it's a mechanical pencil.

6:12 PM
@balpha - This is sooo odd! (Google Nexus S puzzle)

Sigh
I'm getting "you must login to post this message" messages every 10 minutes now on SE :(
I don't get kicked out

@TimStone Well it is hard to tell really. I mean, you didn't even get close to centering them and you've got this big object in the middle blocking half the picture.

The room list doesn't log me in.
When I use the button I get back in however.
...for some 10 more minutes.

@RebeccaChernoff ;)

@moshe I'm not even playing; it US, UK, and CAN only

6:14 PM
@balpha - o i am

@RebeccaChernoff I take pride in my selective editing.
Also, my boss just mentioned one of our projects that reminded me I have my own vendor story, heh.

We do work for a client who requires data from a vendor, and the data that their web service returns contains characters illegal for XML.
So the web service fails horribly, and it's hard to isolate what piece of data is responsible. The illegal characters come from people copying from Excel or something, and then pasting into the vendor's submission form.

@TimStone That sounds like a TDWTF post a while back

So we complained to the vendor about it, and they told us that the users should go back and fix their mistakes.
Since, you know, it would be unreasonable for them not to print out an invalid response, and far more reasonable for us to go figure out which entry was responsible through process of elimination, then go have someone manually fix it.
But here's the real kicker.
The client owns the vendor.

6:23 PM
Heh.

Heh.

lolwut???

We're hoping that with enough pressure someone will finally demand that they fix it, but it hasn't happened yet. Also, the web service is notorious for returning inconsistent results for the same queries.
Changing the sort order, for instance, will modify the number of total results returned.

Hey, anyone know anything about cryptography?
I'm trying to decode something.

@TimStone speaking of Hoare and consistency ... that's fracking awesome on a stick with a bun right there

6:27 PM
I need a cipher that would a)Include all letters of the alphabet b)give me the answer to the Nexus S challenge.
Seriously, I got a clue, not sure what to do with it.

@TimStone you don't say! ;)

DID POPULAR DEMAND SEND YOU THE FUNDS THROUGH HIS WESTERN UNION YET?

@TimStone oh wait, you did say :(

@PopularDemand - I saw somewhere today that Google plans on dumping the caps lock key.

@Tim You mean did Popular Demand get his funds. Not yet. There seems to be a problem with the barrister's daughter who is very sick. He is very embarrassed but he had to pay the doctor a lot of money, and now he can't afford the transfer fees (which can't be deducted from the actual money being wired for legal reasons).
He's now looking for how to get hold of those fees somehow. It's just a few hundred dollars. He may even turn to Popular Demand to see whether might help him out

6:36 PM
@drachenstern I'm surprised, given who the client is.. Not so much that something's wrong, but that there's not more pressure to fix the mess ups to appease the particular group that we do work for, heh. Ah well. We got something that manages to take care of it well enough, so.
@Rejoicerejoicekbdisback Ah, yes, my mistake. Oh, that's rather tragic, I do hope she'll be alright.

This is awesome.

Q: Question about Recalculation of Reputation

org.life.javaHello I triggered recalc using http://stackoverflow.com/reputation?recalc=true But after 5 min my reputation from 11928 became 11865 Why ? How can I trace out the problem ?

2

I already posted my Social Security Number. Just withdraw the funds directly.

@PopularDemand should be sure to send the funds without delay.
@RebeccaChernoff Hahahah

@RebeccaChernoff Users like that are the reason I ignore reputation score.

I'm proud of my low MSO rep, that means I don't waste time dealing with meta-issues, only real ones :D

6:40 PM
@NickT Sure, keep telling yourself that.

(Not that I have room to talk)

@RebeccaChernoff Fck that question. I clicked his recalc link and I lost 50 reputation...

Q: What is it like to be a high-rep user?

Popular DemandIt's been months. Many months. Asking some questions. Answering many more questions. Thanklessly editing hundreds, nay, thousands, of vague and poorly-formed posts. Proving to all, far and wide, that you are the expert. That you know all there is to know about your chosen field. And finall...

2500-ish on SO, 130 MSO

6:41 PM
@NathanTaylor Stack Overflow rickroll! Brilliant!
3

Hooray, I got two points back on SO! ;)

I'll lose 150 on MSO if I do a recalc. |:

@NathanTaylor Hey, you never really had that rep in the first place. It's not like you really lost anything.

@PopularDemand Tell that to my badge :|

6:43 PM
Could you make a link that if clicked causes you to randomly downvote a bunch of questions?

@NickT lol

@NathanTaylor Oh. In that case, I do feel kinda bad for you.

I don't know anything past HTML 3.2

Bye bye, ~1k MSO rep!

@NickT A bunch of questions or just a bunch of posts?
>_<

6:44 PM
Just stuff to cause a rep hit

@PopularDemand Still comfortably above 10K :P

@TimStone But so much farther from the 20k ability that will exist by the time I reach 20k!

You've given the dev team extra time to make a decision, they'll be thankful for that.

I'm now just over half way to 10K on SO...I really should answer some of these questions I still have open. I'm also pretty sure I said that the other day...hrm.

6:47 PM
This is pretty win, I created a custom context menu in Windows Explorer to build any SLN or CSPROJ with the configuration i select

I've found it! The perfect 20k rep privilege!

You can spend 20k rep to rig the elections in favour of a user of your choice!
And you can spend moar to rig moar!

Just like national elections

Like say you want to annoy rchern, you make her mod on Gaming and then start complaining about ITG, GREC and chat owner abuse and all sorts of fun stuff!

We should disable commit submission on Enter for people with 20K. That'd give them something to work towards.

I got 2 extra rep on Gaming. Boo yah.

@NickT Bah.

Lost 9 on E&R though :P

As for MSO, I'm not going to recalc and submit to the quasi random deletion of questions that happens on this site. :(

@radp There should be a "Just 'cause" delete reason that doesn't destroy rep.

@radp What is this ITG and GREC you speak of

No change to my 130 on MSO; that would be hilarious if it did though.

@PopularDemand We only count upvotes for that poll.
Thank you for trying however.

@radp That's silly. What if I really disagree with one of the other options?

@PopularDemand There was another question on the topic, asking if we were okay with the methodology.
You're a couple of weeks behind.

That may be, but it still seems like a bad choice to me.

@radp He hasn't put in enough game hours to level up yet.

It's an SE site, so the downvote button exists. It's totally counterintuitive to disable it for one selected poll.

7:02 PM
@PopularDemand Polls don't really work on SE anyway, I thought that was clear enough.

Especially because it's not really being disabled, merely enabled and ignored.

Oak apparently asked to have a proper poll (like the Ubuntu merging one) and was ignored.

But whatever, it's your site.

We needed a decision.
We had to make do.

The Dunning–Kruger effect is a cognitive bias in which unskilled people make poor decisions and reach erroneous conclusions, but their incompetence denies them the metacognitive ability to realize their mistakes. The unskilled therefore suffer from illusory superiority, rating their own ability as above average, much higher than it actually is, while the highly skilled underrate their abilities, suffering from illusory inferiority. This leads to the situation in which less competent people rate their own ability higher than more competent people. It also explains why actual competence may w...

@jleedev Ah. I didn't look too closely because it looked so... Pythony at first glance.

Explicit super means that not only can you override a method without regard for the base implementation, you may do the same for a constructor, which raises questions about what you're using inheritance for.
