yay, my dad got his keys back...
after dropping them down the elevator shaft...
25 floors down...
I thought someone undid their downvotes...
Maybe... someone, somewhere did
After all, they got their keys back!
oh, my dad never downvotes
and he votes every 4 years or so... in the elections :D
@MetaAndrewT. The vote was locked
2:21 AM
..... that was a good one
Oh... need to wait for an edit to the candidates selection...

are there any feature requests to change the comment-flagging rate limit to allow bursts?
It's really annoying when half a comment thread is no longer needed
lets just delete all of it
@RyanM I raise a post flag in these case and then link the comments that need to be kept.
@rene Ugh, mess.
@RyanM I usually got all of those comment flags declined for too many flags on the same post :)
@MetaAndrewT. wait, really? I've never had that happen...I asked an SO mod once and some mods apparently actually prefer each individual comment flagged
I once flagged like 10 comments on a post...and to be fair, they did decline one flag. But they didn't delete that comment either (which I maintain makes little sense out of the context of the mess they did delete...but it was a good comment, so eh).
6:09 AM
@RyanM did that on Anime.SE, probably annoyed the mods ;)
@Tinkeringbell yeah, I was close to do some serial voting so I thought better bring it here.
oooof that's a lot of declined flags. Did they delete the comments anyway?
@RyanM no, though the comments are actually really outdated
heck, I can't check which flags are for which comments...
My most recent declined NLN flag was for a comment that says "I can help you, but there isn't enough space to explain"
...I stand by that flag.
Well, the comments are discussion about spoiler block like "I agree with @username. You should use the spoiler tag." on a question that already has spoiler block applied...
6:20 AM
The SO moderators have approved 99.65% of my comment flags, though, so I'm not too concerned about the declined ones :-)
@MetaAndrewT. At least comment flags don't count toward flag bans, so having all those declined won't get you banned (but does count negatively toward your daily flag allowance). Flagging the post does count toward a potential flag ban, but only once. So the question is: if your flags turn out declined, what do you value more? Your ability to flag at all in the near future, or your far future ability to flag more times?
Pretty sure Andrew isn't hurting for flags, given the 1,380 helpful flags on that site :-)
Flags sometimes hurt.
Might depend on the volume of flags/comments how mods would like them delivered :P
The flag doesn't hurt, hitting the pole does ...
6:25 AM
@SonictheK-DayHedgehog I value both, though I only had 5 declined post flags out of 665, compared to 94 declined comment flags out of 673. Still 100 daily flags though :)
@rene depends where it hits....
little toe?
This too, yeah.
And then there's currently an election on Anime.SE... will my comment-deletion policy be controversial? stay tune!
Going to start Icy Tower, this will bring the kids along too. It's like a silent dog alarm: they can feel I'm playing it. :D
6:28 AM
@MetaAndrewT. Eh, bad cliffhanger.
Every comment deletion policy is controversial for limiting free-speech :P
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Ohh, now that's a game I haven't heard about in a loooong time.
@Tinkeringbell somehow on Android.SE, our regulars really like to clean up and flag outdated comments :)
6:52 AM
@MetaAndrewT. They do on IPS too, and people are also flagging more of them on MSE than when I first started as a mod :)
@Tinkeringbell six years?
in Shadow's Den, Jul 23 '14 at 8:29, by Shadow Wizard
@VotetoClose Icy Tower!
@ShadowWizardWearingMask I wasn't even around back then :P
I think even longer. The last time I played that was probably a few years before I went to University in 2008.
@Tinkeringbell what's your record, you remember?
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Ehh, it was a few 'stages', I think. But no, can't remember :D
My 3 y/o daughter reached floor 120, though no combo at all. ;)
My son reached 418, my own record is only 510. Turns out practice alone isn't enough. :(
7:00 AM
If I get really bored this weekend, I might try and see how far I can get for you ;)
Just relubricated my desktop keyboard. I miss the clicky sensation of the space and Enter keys
I should clean mine again soon too. Perhaps during christmas vacation.
Yours mechanical or membrane?
Yeah, mechanical keyboards just aren't worth it, considering that you can get seven membrane keyboards for the price of a single mechanical one.
Just for the novelty of it, though, I use a mechanical mouse.
7:13 AM
Eh, some people really like mechanical ones, I'm sure they have their reasons. And I don't have to worry about money. This one works, that's good enough for me :P
@SonictheK-DayHedgehog eh, not true.
actually, a bit of an annoyance I have is the keyboard I've had the last decade finally died, and the spare dosen't have a decade of breaking in
Two or three, or even five? Sure, quite possibly. But seven?
@SonictheK-DayHedgehog some people even prefer them, sure
but "Arn't worth it" is a very subjective thing
to the point where I am debating getting a keyboard with hot swappable keys, desoldering the keys from my old keyboard and installing them
and there's actually cheap mechanicals
I was messing with one, and it isn't bad other than the debounce being off. I'll need to check what it was
Don't get me wrong, mechanical keyboards are really great, and I'd prefer to have one over a membrane, seeing as I do feel the mushiness of a membrane. But my use cases are such that it's not worth the 7x price increase
(or 4-5x)
7:29 AM
I type. A lot.
That's my use case :D
7:42 AM
@JourneymanGeek so no downvotes

@JourneymanGeek We've seen your keyboard, did you hit it with your torch ?

@Rob this was when I literally had no money :D
everything on the desk except the X220 was salvage
I think we might have thrown out the table too
8:46 AM
The table and chair seem reasonable, and that's only 8 months ago; glad you won the lottery.
@Rob oh the photo is a lot older
X220 is... 2nd generation core i5. The PC that replaced Juno was a 3rd gen, so... uh... 8 years or so?
@Rob that's nearly my current setup
I had a core i7 3700 - in between, about 7 years
I've gotten the old girl upgraded on a budget but kinda haven't gotten her running again
(swapped heatsink, added ram, added a 1tb chinese SSD.... got her running and reinstalled the OS... then had to move her and haven't gotten her set up again)
I do have dummy HDMI plugs so running headless is an option now
9:05 AM
Headless? looking for the head
@ShadowWizardWearingMask No such command 'head'.
@ShadowWizardWearingMask with no monitor
essentially this emulates a monitor so software that expects a monitor will run
they're like 2 dollars so I bought a few "in case"
9:20 AM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask Headless is a bit of a misnomer, you need a head just not a monitor:
@Rob while there's probably a way to, I have a linux box that runs gnome that has no monitor. Sticking one of those things in a HDMI port is the only way I can graphically remote in
9:42 AM
My daily use machine is a Haswell i5 (actually a Xeon, but pretty much a modified i5 with extra L3 cache)
@JourneymanGeek How much was that SSD?
@JourneymanGeek My Cable Modem is a Linux box, I can log-in with my phone using Wi-Fi and poke around; so I understand what you mean.
@SonictheK-DayHedgehog It was a while back, and most folks are probably better off not buying random chinese SSDs :D
If you must, kingdian is decent
Mine are all SanDisk (Western Digital)
can't find the mail... so really o idea
@Rob oh my router is another one of those :D
2 hours later…
12:17 PM
I have a question. When a flag about serial voting to the moderators is returned with
"We've asked CMs to investigate", and days later I see "Voting corrected" in my tab,
but there are still more that haven't been corrected, should I flag another post,
or wait?
(I don't know why my profile is grafitar...)
12:34 PM
@AnnZen depends for which post or posts you raised that flag. If you made them aware of those in your initial flag then reflagging is just a nuisance. If the serial voting is on posts you didn't point out earlier then a flag on the involved post and links to other posts in the same serial voting spree can be worthwhile.
perhaps the start of the spree
and before i got any feedback from the mods
the spree continued. I can tell
that the votes that are most recent
have not been reversed.
^ I flagged perhaps the start of the spree
12:54 PM
@AnnZen then perhaps raise a new flag. Based on what I can see only the votes on July, 30th are serial. All others seem legit. assuming this is about your MSE account.
1 hour later…
2:10 PM
@Rob lucky guy
@AnnZen I kinda trust the CMs to have checked the accounts for most part
so its possible they are not serial votes
@rene more likely she means her SO account. Reputation page is like traffic lights.
@JourneymanGeek there are some obvious serial downvotes, but less than four each time. Whoever cast them is well aware of the system.
@rene It's actually my account on SO.
2:26 PM

You can have both too.

A: Seeing "It was not possible to perform this tag search at this time due to an unexpected error" intermittently

Marc Gravell(repeated from here) The short summary of this one is "because internet"; it turns out some annoying folks were doing annoying things specifically to be annoying, and a side-effect was disproportionate performance impact to a particular sub-system (the "tag engine"). You’ve gone through the motions and play-acted a disaster recovery scenario, but despite spending a lot on the production, it’s not real. What you have is a fairy tale: “Once upon a time, in theory, if everything works perfectly, we have a plan to survive the disasters we thought of in advance.” In practice, it’s more likely to be a nightmare.
Guest Post, any relation to Tim Post?
His guest?
@ShadowWizardWearingMask unrelated; for a few seconds when we deploy, it can be a little... "uncertain" - we deployed a little while before your comment, so I'm guessing you were one of the first people on a fresh server — Marc Gravell ♦ 8 mins ago
Didn't really expect a reply, lol.
3:29 PM
@ShadowWizardWearingMask now Marc will come to your house with a giant Tag ...
An s-tag
@ShadowWizardWearingMask I guess it's related to this not-featuted announcement:
Q: Search changes for anonymous users

Nick CraverWe wanted to share some of what's been happening on the network lately behind the scenes. We do our best to keep fires from being visible but that's not always possible and when it happens my goal is to be as open as possible. In short, we've enabled captchas for anonymous users when they search Q&...

Meanwhile, while everyone was busy, a thief has stolen the FavIcons from the HNQ List again (3-4th time this month).
4:12 PM
@Rob no repro for me
4:25 PM
@rene Also, completly different HNQs delivered to Firefox browser versus what is delivered to Chrome (shouldn't there be some overlap):
depends on which server you land. Cache is per server
starting FF to verify
OK, just the one "bug", and a Feature which may not be desirable.
FF left, chrome right: i.stack.imgur.com/Vb7FV.png
lol, that was a mistake
must have dragged it when i switched over
You ran out of toilets?
4:30 PM
the darkmode extension i use adds ctrl+v and drag/drop image posting
@rene Refreshing the page 15 times with each browser produces a different HNQ each time, but never loses nor restores the FavIcons for either browser. Fully repro for me. :(
I guess my being in NA and you being in NL is a factor. Unfortunately, I'm busy for at least an hour.
The base HNQ List only refreshes every 15 minutes see also: meta.stackexchange.com/a/354731/158100
@Rob does this load for you from FF: meta.stackexchange.com/Content/Img/…
4:46 PM
@rene Yes, I can see Img/favicons-sprite16.png?v=f4676f10d215
Hmm, the only thing that happens is a css rule to find the correct sprite. Is that FF old?
@rene I think the "request" it refers to (that is 15m apart) is the server's request for a current list of HNQs to present; to me regardless of how often I request (as long as I don't cross the server's 15m line) - so I should have seen the same HNQ List each time, and possibly two different ones; but not 15 different ones.
@Rob the total number of HNQ's is in the hundreds, you get a top 25 of a random list, per server, per call from that single master list.
Nope, running on Android; it's new: Friday 10/16 @ 1:53 AM --- 82.0.0-beta.6 (Build #2015769931)
AC: 60.0.5, a1a471ddc
GV: 82.0-20201008183927
AS: 63.0.0
@rene OK. So not truly the hottest. Just the hottest in some random place, each 15 minutes.
5:08 PM
Yeah, I have 100 HNQs here but sede shows way more potential HNQ questions for dates in the past
@rene clicking the first link, and the big ball in the upper right goes here: codegolf.stackexchange.com/questions/213962/… which corresponds with: stackexchange.com - and refreshing Hot tab doesn't change the result everytime, it's insistent about its answer.
... But SEDE would be 5 days not-hot (stale).
@Rob yeah, that list is top 100 order by display_score desc, based on this.
2 hours later…
7:36 PM
@Ollie, Regarding: "Keyboard shortcuts don't work at stackexchange.com, or in the network profile", is this the problem: "Join meta doesn't join main site automatically?" ?
1 hour later…
When a new site launches, things can be out of whack when it comes to favicons for at least a couple days.
However, HNQs are completely randomized on each page load.
@rene and with sand and Gravell?
@SonictheK-DayHedgehog gravy is better. My kids love their food dry, so I don't bother to make.
(no point working hard just for something I'll enjoy)
That said, I did throw some kebabs, potatoes, and green peas into a pot today and let it cook for few hours. Turned out to be not so bad.
A: Incorrect icons on hot network questions

Adam LearApparently we've been looking into this for a while now. :) But, the core problem remains the same - sometimes some CDN nodes end up caching an old image with the new cachebreaker and everything goes out of whack. I'll see if we can dig more into it soonTM, but in the meantime, please feel free ...

@Rob ^
soonTM means 6-8 soons, meaning.... well, you know.
You said it. ;)
some things just... aren't as important as others, :p
9:05 PM
I do it these days with a client, poor soul keep asking for ETA and I'm forced to delay it. (assigned to different tasks by the boss.)
Pity, he's my favorite client, and it's more fun to work on his tasks.
(usually more fun = easier, but not always)
That said, anyone here works with Coralogix and/or Fluentd?
never heard of either
spend most of my time in coldfusion
would rather be working with js
@user400654 I do work with JS most of the time.
Coralogix is system that handle huge amount of logs, and Fluentd is a system to send log files to remote servers.
Our systems write to log files, this can't be changed - so those files should reach a central place to be stored and analyzed better.
(from dozens of different places, all over the world.)
Sadly, in the first place I tried to implement it, something very odd happens. The logs do reach Coralogix, but only in "bursts" - they're sent for about 15 minutes each time (20k to 100k lines), then.... they stop, for 1-2 hours, then send again. Without any error messages, no hint what's going on.
Since I have no clue if the configurations are correct.... no way to know what's going on. :(
