Not a very smart move :P

@Tinkeringbell Well, that definitely answers this question, though:
in The Sphinx's Lair on The Stack Exchange Network Chat, 10 hours ago, by HTM
in Contact, yesterday, by HTM
...Mith, I don't know if you're the world's greatest genius or if you need to go to the hospital
...since if I need to get a finger reattached, I probably need the hospital. ;)

Speak of the devil. Hey @HTM :P
...suddenly I'm getting a server error?

8:06 AM
@Mithical hm, maybe the parrot bit off more than you realised

Funny, now it's working again. Huh.

Hey... can we stop blaming me for everything? There's at least one other parrot here... and that's one's even green!

@Tinkeringbell hey!

I am afraid to blame Magisch of things.
(is he looking at me?)

why? I'm perfectly friendly and non threatening

8:10 AM
Yes sir!

looms and menaces

shrieks

@Magisch Alle Menschen werden Brüder Wo dein sanfter Flügel weilt.?

The deafening silence is very tasty.

It's a good atmosphere to properly wake up in :)

8:41 AM
Hmm. It seems the warm welcome hat was fixed, but not in chat :(

could be cacheing

How? I just put the hat on this morning...
Because I liked it because it was fixed. That's a true warm welcome ;)

9:20 AM
@YaakovEllis btw, Yaakov - the original trigger for the Amazing Grace hat was
> Ask a meta question tagged that scores at least 10 and attracts an answer that also scores at least 10
That's because coincidentally she is also tied to the famous "Bug found in mainframe" incident that is often said to be the origin of the widespread use of the term debugging
It was then revised to be about getting a medal.
I don't really mind, but the change is due to make users think more about Grace role in military history than in IT history.
(not sure how you could fix that though, the original trigger meant that you basically could get the hat only on MSE)
Oh, and for an added trivia....
it also manages to look like the symbol on weapon power-ups in Contra.

sigh ... people and hats... can we just get random coloured squares as avatars next year?

was just going to post this same info, Yaakov. Btw, for your reference in case you didn't already know about that, back in '15 there was a post that listed each hat origin. Could be useful to restart the tradition. Anyway, I think that maybe it is safer if we avoid anything that could be related to politics/military in the future (remember - we also had the Flying Tiger hat the same year) — Hitodama 12 mins ago

I can only suggest to try to avoid anything that can be easily tied to politics, specific countries, military groups and such topics

I was more thinking of that.

9:31 AM
Basically, switch to cakes

'easily tied to'... As long as people see Jesus on toast, that's impossible.

Instead of hats, collect pastry.
or cats

unicorns?
Ugly sweaters.

@Tinkeringbell that is an option too. And as I already said in my old suggestion.... You can add procedural generation and have infinite sweaters.

I just read the wiki article on grace hopper, apparently she had quite a productive and impressive life

9:33 AM
Yeah I know I should feel bad :P

should you? you owe the world nothing in particular

Tell that to the world? :P
I was just kidding...

;)

I feel like people are deliberately trying to find fault in everything and anything related to hats.

Just in case someone will want to use that in the future.

9:42 AM
@Mithical only in hats though?

@Hitodama Hahaha good one :) I already upvoted the pet edition ;)

@Mithical My guess is the user filing the new thread saw positive response to the one yesterday and decided to try themselves

@Hitodama that ship has sailed…

@Magisch Which... is logical? At least they made their question 'right' at the first revision ;)
@Hitodama Why quote the whole thing at me?
I had already read (and upvoted) most of it once ;)

because I misclicked, that's why..

9:46 AM
Ahhh.

> And YET another more thing (2019 update)

A random parrot in a random chat board just pointed out another interesting option: ugly sweaters. I think that could work too - basic idea would be the same: sweaters could be procedural generated based on a random seed (similar to how gravatars are generated). They would still be bought with coins you would get from various task/trigger. The fun part is that we could then implement a "gift an ugly sweater" feature to give out sweaters you own to other users. That would basically be the SE version of the old Christmas tradition of getting ugly sw

Well it's almost Christmas... so I forgive you? :P

I just intended to post this part.

no forgiveness, only fire

anyway, sweaters could still be interesting, realtively easy to do and I think no one could then claim that the shirt reminded them anything.

JAD
9:47 AM
hmm, randomly generated offensive symbols ;)

@Magisch fire would be nice... my room is a bit on the old side :)

@JAD random is random and no one had yet blamed SE for gravatar shapes

@Hitodama "This snowflake/negative space looks like a swastika"... Like I said... as long as people see Jesus on toast, they'll find something ;)

@Tinkeringbell is that a reason to burn it down?

@Hitodama Don't give them ideas :P
@Gimby I was thinking a more controlled burn? :P
Burning it down would be a waste of yarn.

9:49 AM
@Tinkeringbell ha ha :) I see fire, I think only in extremes.

@Gimby Which is good, unless it causes the kind of mess it did last New Year's Eve in Scheveningen ;)

@Tinkeringbell Thank god that nonsense is over. It was actually featured in the Netherlands episode of "Europe from Above" on NatGeo. It was shameful to see.

Was it? I kinda like vreugdevuren...

A fire is fine. But not one you can see from space.

But I guess it's not very environmentally friendly and when done this big/unprepared, dangerous.
@Gimby Ehh... disagree. If it's a fire you can see from space that doesn't harm anything or anyone... it's the best fire :D

9:54 AM
Yeah? But the "doesn't harm anything or anyone" did not apply, it did do a lot of damage :)

That's true.
Now I wonder if previous year's fires were visible from space.

the fire in australia certainly is

I exaggerated that to illustrate how big the fires were, I'm pretty sure you couldn't see them from space ;)

:(
You got my hopes up, only to kill all the dreams with a dead bird!

@Gimby This one is visible from space...
The Darvaza gas crater (Turkmen: Garagum ýalkymy), also known as the Door to Hell or Gates of Hell, is a natural gas field collapsed into a cavern located in Derweze, Turkmenistan. Geologists intentionally set it on fire to prevent the spread of methane gas and it is thought to have been burning continuously since 1971. The gas crater has a total area of 5,350 m2. Its diameter is 69 m (226 ft), and its depth is 30 m (98 ft).The Turkmen government hopes that the crater will become a popular tourist attraction. The surrounding area is also popular for wild desert camping. == Geography == The gas...

HTM
10:01 AM
@Mithical ‘ello there
I should probably be in bed now, got more finals to prep for

Expecting dangerous releases of poisonous gases from the cavern into nearby towns, the engineers considered it advisable to burn the gas off. It was estimated that the gas would burn out within a few weeks, but it has instead continued to burn for 48 years and is expected to keep on burning
Wow, poster example of "assumption is the mother of all screwups" :)

JAD
damn, no pictures of it actually being visible from space :/
tbh, with espionage satellites, aren't most things on the surface visible from space?

True enough.
The hairs on someone's legs, if we have to believe certain hyperactive Hollywood movies :)

@JAD you can actually kinda recognize it on Google Maps.
There is a distinctive fire red circle visible in that area
Also visible in this article

@Hitodama reminds me of that coal mine in america that caught fire some 40 years ago and is still burning also

10:13 AM
@Magisch There are even bigger ones burning in China.

10:26 AM
in the meantime, somewhere else Squaresoft employees keep avoiding the big question "Will the FF7 remake have any major plot changes?"
I am kinda starting to hope that this strategy backfires on them.

JAD
how many times has anything truly backfired in the gaming industry? Especially when nostalgia was added to the mix?

Oooh! If we're talking games... I read on Twitter yesterday that the Stardew Valley update is now ready for the Switch too. So if I disappear for two weeks, that's where I'm at ;)

@JAD let me think.... nope, never.
They kinda know some won't buy the game if they don't fix Zack role and "Ye oldie Aerith Dies" thing.... and others won't buy the game if they do.
So they keep throwing curve balls that can be misinterpreted in both ways.
See the infamous "this if FF of 2020" Japanese tv ads that basically says "What we do now could be different or the same" right after mentioning Aerith death.

JAD
@Hitodama and either can be solved by waiting a day and googling which of the two it ended up being

@Hitodama from what I understand the plot is kept rather faithfully, however some of the awkwardness is taken out of it which appeared due to the translation from Japanese to English. Even the weirdo dress-up sequence is kept in the game.

10:35 AM
@JAD I kinda think that you know nothing about the remake, do you?
It is impossible to do that.... the original game will be split in multiple episodes
First probably will be JUST MIDGARD

@Hitodama That's for sure

Enche, all the controversial plot will be at the very least in the second game.

I've never been able to get into final fantasy
every piece of lore I've ever read from it just oozes overly complicated mess

they know that, so they are intentionally keeping vague so that people will buy the first "chapter" because they don't know in which direction the following ones will go.

@Magisch Are you still playing The Witcher?

10:38 AM
@Magisch Mmm that's particularly Final Fantasy 7 in my experience, the other games are pretty straightforward.

@πάνταῥεῖ I'm done (tm) with it
some 400 hours in total now

@Gimby unless the final scene also shows something about Kalm town. Or they include some flashback to Cloud arrival with Zack. But basically Midgard

@Magisch Wasn't there a follow up?

@πάνταῥεῖ not that I know of?
I recently replayed it a bit
mostly the DLCs though

@Magisch I thought I read something at Heise. But could well be that it was just a comparison for a different format.

JAD
10:41 AM
@Hitodama Correct. I didn't know they'd release it in episodes. That changes things yes

@JAD I assumed that, and btw sorry in case the messages sounded condescending or anything. Didn't mean that - just that I realized you didn't know about the whole episodic release thing.
Basically, to have the FULL game... I don't think the final episode will be released before 2025.

JAD
none taken :)
and yeah, that sucks

So, you are making a remake, without being clear on what plot element were changed... on an episodic release that will keep people hanging for years.
Add that they seem to be purposely dropping red herrings... and you have a recipe for angry buyers

JAD
as long as they're buyers, they won't care
my point still kinda stands. Just wait until the contentious episode is released

@JAD Oh, it doesn't really matter for me - I am far more interested in the Trial of Mana remake than I am in the FF7 one.
but... as I said, I think that the City of the Ancients part would be at least chapter 2.
.... You really think gamers will skip the first chapter to wait at least a year to see if they like the second one?
Especially when most would assume "remake==same plot"
They are walking on eggs now.

Legal documents are funny. From now in, in real life, I'm also going to use five sentences to just state my name, address, birthday and marital status :P

Being faster than SmokeDetector is satisfying...

@Tinkeringbell not a fair game, it has 5 minutes delay before posting here. Surely it reported that post in the main room. ;)
LOL
See?

@ShadowThePrincessWizard There weren't any flags from SmokeDetector on it yet ;)
That's why I was quicker :)

and yep, the scene is just like that in the original, they just added the music and the afterimage effects

@Hitodama ._.
What is this from?

@JourneymanGeek Scooby Doo: Legend of the Phantosaur
this is the original...
And then... mods started to appear.
Now, you can play as Ultra Instinct Shaggy in Xenoverse 2

@JNat thanks!
@JNat thanks!
@Hitodama the beard looks like a "loading" gif icon.... ;)

@ShadowThePrincessWizard this room is echoey some times, heh? :P

@ShadowThePrincessWizard can't really do much when the original looked like this.

@JNat blame the walls... we need to break some. :P
@Hitodama sure

Less loading-ish

as I said, the knitting tool doesn't exactly play well with small lines :P

@Yaakov hey! The tour page is winking at us, in case you missed it... meta.stackexchange.com/questions/340637/… :)
(Not sure it's "yours" though.... guess there are other developers out there in SE, but you can poke them in case of dire need... ;))

JAD
hehe, spotify currently has a similar bug

and since you are at it @Yaakov, if you have to touch that page to fix that.... it would be a good opportunity to add an unicorn/pony (a little Fluttershy maybe, but I don't think Hasbro would bee too happy...) to the hidden easter egg it has.... You probably know what I am talking about
The current one is sooooo boring.

@JAD that's horrible)

@ShadowThePrincessWizard absolutely unusable

@JAD Oh hey, so that's where that missing parentheses went from my manager's presentation yesterday!

@YaakovEllis Konami code on that very page. Try.

and.... you should add an unicorn on the diagram.

@Hitodama well, if I add it, I certainly wont do it today. I will probably maybe add it sometime in the next year. I guess you will just have to keep checking back there to see

@Hitodama Secret secret move#42: use kaomoji. (ಥ﹏ಥ)

I thought secret move #42 was chocolate?

JAD
it's context dependent

You just have an unhealthy obsession with chocolate.

@Tinkeringbell nope, it kinda is Friendship.

2:00 PM
@Mithical It's because it's like forbidden fruit! I can't eat much of it :(
@Hitodama You can make friends with chocolate :D

Chocolate is highly toxic to parrots.

Really? Well. yet another reason to stick to a parrot avatar, who would've known there could be so many!

@Tinkeringbell be happy that I can't really find the old discussion "was the fact that Twily cutie mark has exactly 42 tips intentional or just a fortunate coincidence" that we had in another room...

I don't think I had that conversation, and if we did, it was probably in here :P

@Tinkeringbell Chocolate being toxic to parrots is a reason to have a parrot avatar?

@Gimby Suits real life me... If I eat too much chocolate, my eczema gets worse.

@Gimby It means nobody will ever suspect them of stealing their chocolate.

@Rubiksmoose Hey, that was a secret!

It's the gesture!

clearly we need a "mark as shog" function that works like accepts, only more authoritative

I don't need flowers. Yet I'm flattered if I get some.

I always thought this was a drawn out clichee. Do you honestly react positively to flowers?
nobody I know does. They all see it like being gifted a pet

Ehhh. Society demands I do? :P
At least I don't start sneezing.

@Magisch This is kind of true, my partner is notoriously bad at keeping plants alive and it infuriates her. I never ever give her flowers.

2:50 PM
@Gimby Flowers are meant to die. Plants is a bit of a bigger responsibility ;)

How does that look?

See! (I'm not sure if bounty markdown was still broken though...)

the female sales reps get tons of flowers from customers every year
none of them seem happy about it in the least

That's because you get them all the time.
Then they lose the specialness ;)

@Tinkeringbell not all, she buys the ones that are meant to last. But they don't.

2:53 PM
@Tinkeringbell The "Show off your hats" bounty links to another post. I assumed it was via markdown

@StevoisiaksupportsMonica Then it works again ;)

Any suggestions before I post that bounty?

@πάνταῥεῖ Nice, wildflowers!

nobody ever gave me flowers

2:55 PM
Maybe adding a phrase "The community appreciates it. 🙂"

@Magisch Where should I send them? ;)

which is nice because I don't like caring for them. The only plant I continue to maintain is an ivy

Or would that be too much

@StevoisiaksupportsMonica I'd say make it from you... or people are going to get mad at you for speaking for them.

Potential final revision:

I mean.. it's your message ;)
I'm not going to tell you what to write :P

Alright, it has been posted

@Tinkeringbell too kind of you but please no

I know ;)

;)
my fern is plenty plant for me
it seems to be unkillable

Almost forgot I can't mark an answer for bounty in advance without dismissing the notification
@CesarM The changes to the Warm Welcome hat are appreciated too. :)

3:06 PM
@Magisch now you done cursed it

@JourneymanGeek I've been telling myself I wont get another plant but the ivy just keeps spreading. it is vast and all consuming, and ever growing
intermittently I forgot to water it, forgot for a year to change its soil, and more. And yet, it persists.

are you sure you didn't accidentally adopt a triffid?

I have to prune it every so often

@Mithical chocolate is healthy.
Chocolate is seeds from a fruit. Seeds are good for you. Hence chocolate is healthy

@JourneymanGeek As always, depends on the dose.

3:17 PM
@πάνταῥεῖ I suppose 20 tons of fruit might be a mite bit lethal applied correctly....

@StevoisiaksupportsMonica y'all should know that shog's answer is an excerpt from an internal discussion that we had on this. We have similar discussions about many of the feature requests and bug reports

@YaakovEllis nonetheless - Its good to see folks active on meta.

Seamless communication is a must on the modern web. As internet speeds increase, we expect out data in real time. To address this need, WebSocket, a popular communication protocol finalized in 2011, enables websites to send and receive data without delay. With WebSockets, you can build multiplayer games, chat apps, and collaboration software that work on the open web.

I built several projects with WebSockets before I started to wonder what exactly was happening under the hood. That question took me down a research rabbit hole, and I am excited to share what I’ve learned with you. In this article, we will: …

Hi guys. I want to post a question with this title "Does it matter to you who answers your question?" do you think this question make problem?

well, my primary observation would be that you're potentially asking it to a community of answerers. I'm not sure how useful the response will be.

Some of us ask a lot of questions.
I don't see it being problematic as a if you can phrase it right.

@Sepideh Hi! It sounds a bit opinion-based. I mean, of course almost everything on meta is opinion-based, but when it's not evident how the information would be useful to anyone, it gets a poll-ish appearance and we haven't been doing those for a long time now.
If you word it as "should it matter?", then I guess even if people act otherwise, their response would be obvious.

Thanks for your responses
