@Feeds That's a Soylent Green question:

1 hour later…
2:11 AM
@Rob That looks like expired film

Rob
During filming they used a water cell with green dye as a filter to make the atmosphere appear green (because it is poisonous).

It looks like "I" "have" and "a" are in the stopword list of Elastic Search on SO.
"a" seems to be in the default set: stackoverflow.com/a/51288244/578411

morning.

7:54 AM
what the hell is this doing on HNQ

JAD
eh, scam questions tend to do well on MoneySE

yeah but that is rather NSFW (as in, you wouldn't want your boss to see that on your screen), no?

8:07 AM
Mwah. Borderline, I don't think "sugar daddy" in a title is that much NSFW...

JAD
but you can always suggest an edit

8:21 AM
@Magisch If you're on SO and that shows up in the HNQ list, any reasonable boss is not going to go crazy over it. If you decide to click it, that's your problem.

@Mithical The exact above rationale has gotten a whole site kicked off HNQ before and they devised a feature specifically to avoid it, though.
personally I'm unaffected because nobody is (or even can) look at my screen

JAD
so let's hope nobody complains on twitter

8:38 AM
don't worry. I think they will be busy with the Warm Welcome hat for a bit.

JAD
did I miss something?

Q: Is Stack Exchange promoting communism now?

emixI've just earned the "Warm Welcome hat", which is nothing more, nothing less, but a communist symbol of a system which killed millions of people and enslaved my country (Poland) for 123 years, then after the WW2 in 1945 did it again, not until the fall of USSR in 1989. In Poland, promotion of s...

I can't help but feel a bit of sympathy for OP there. I too live in a country where we're particularly sensitive to certain imagery.

@Magisch They mentioned that.

@Magisch that question is bound to be controversial and a good candidate to get a condescending reply "that is why we can't have good things"
Yet, I bet that if I changed my avatar to an Hindu cross (see Glorfindel answer) some mods would remove it or even suspend me just because it look like that other symbol.

JAD
8:48 AM
I don't think that would happen with yellow on red hammer and sickle though.

Up- and downvotes flowing show the controversity.

@πάνταῥεῖ I would use Chewbacca defense and claim it was a reference to Oolong

@JAD i've seen people with an avatar like this before

JAD
I think while they make a valid point, it could be framed better. As it stands it's accusatory and jumping to conclusions.

@JAD Imho, it isn't. The tittle is purposely provocative but I don't think the OP really mean that SE is promoting anything. They are just advocating that the specific choice can be a pain trigger for some users.
Exactly as the April fool site was a pain trigger for some users - even mods I would say - that had to take the day off to avoid it.

8:58 AM
@Hitodama It might benefit from an edit that makes it 'just' a complaint about the communism symbol and the hat, without the 'rhetorical question' of 'Is SE promoting this'....
But I don't know where to start :/

Aren't there other symbols coming with hats, which could be discussed controversially?

I don't subscribe to the controversial stuff behind it; I am still confused what that symbol has to do with being welcoming though :)

JAD
Rephrase it into a feature request to be more mindful about meanings of symbols used for fun

@Tinkeringbell Edit the tittle and the last line to be something like "This hat is a pain trigger for me for obvious reasons"?

> I've just earned the "Warm Welcome hat" and the red star on it looks like a [communist symbol][1] of a system which [killed millions of people][2] and enslaved my country (Poland) for 123 years, then after the WW2 in 1945 did it again, not until the fall of USSR in 1989.

In Poland, promotion of such symbols is prohibited by law.

[![Warm Welcome hat][3]][3]

I hope I don't get banned by this. It's just… I was really shocked to see it this morning. Can SE be more mindful of the symbols used when it's just about fun?
Title: Communist symbol on warm welcome hat?
Something like that?

JAD
9:02 AM
I think it should be a instead of btw

Probably, yeah...

I would be more explicit on the fact that the symbol is a pain trigger for the user, but do as you wish.

No, a feature request or no, don't edit like that?

It's clearly a discussion about how bad SE acts, there's no request in there.

9:03 AM
Okay. So no touching the tags. I am going to edit the body regardless.

JAD
@ShadowThePrincessWizard which is not helpful. Phrasing it as a feature request would be.

If they'll remove that hat, someone will find something offensive in other hat.

@ShadowThePrincessWizard it's clearly an attempt to use evocative language to get SE to retire the hat
why else would they post it?

@Magisch to hammer SE
these days it's a trend, no?

JAD
@ShadowThePrincessWizard On that note, given the horrors of the last season of Game of Thrones, the Mother of Dragons hat brings back traumas

9:04 AM
@ShadowThePrincessWizard So, we just allow that? Or do I just plain delete the question as rude/abusive? Why aren't there any flags for that then?

My good faith interpretation says it's a feature request not tagged and explicitly stated as such

If this exact thing was posted last year, it would be downvoted to oblivion, see this:

Q: Is 'Mmmm Bacon' hat in poor taste?

frostbiteI hold the stack community to very high standards in everything from technical discussions to being acutely aware of cultural sensitivities. As a vegetarian and animal lover I found the 'Bacon' simply too offensive. I'm keen to hear what the other stack<*>ians have to say.

Same idea.
Hat offends people.

Yet this one asks if it's in poor taste, it doesn't accuse SE of promoting something
Or uses language as toxic as 'do we get swastika's next'.

JAD
@ShadowThePrincessWizard last year? 2016?

@JAD yeah, trauma of a good TV show brutally murdered by no else than its writers...
cries
@Tinkeringbell I won't flag because I'm annoyed at SE too, just not acting upon it.
Also, the hammering is done with a small blunt hammer, without causing direct damage, so nothing to flag.

9:09 AM
Yeah, not helpful. I'm going to edit this, to be good faith feature request. IF it's rolled back, we can assume OP is trying to be rude and we can flag.

@JAD 2018
2016 just had the example I posted, of hat offending some people.
@Tinkeringbell fair enough

@Tinkeringbell I suggested a re-framing in a comment to OP. I'm waiting how they respond before I edit.

LOL it even attracted a spam bot

@Magisch Heh. too late.

always the bludgeoning red parrots around

9:13 AM
Green ones are softer, I believe :P

@SonictheReinstateMonica-hog cheers. :)

JAD
@Tinkeringbell but prickly?

@JAD Sometimes, yeah :P

@Catija there was something bit different:

Q: Protecting questions from mobile site

Janus Bahs JacquetI’ve searched through blog posts and questions just about everywhere I know to look on Google and SE (which is still far from everywhere there is to look, mind), but I cannot find anyone mentioning this at all, which surprises me, because it seems like such an obvious question that I had expected...

I must admit though.. that warm welcome hat looks like one of those russian furry hats even.

9:15 AM
@ShadowThePrincessWizard I... don't think the two things really compare.

@Hitodama how so? Hat offending people.
The reason for offense is less relevant.
Some are offended by bacon, some offended by star symbol, etc.

nah, I think the gravity of the situation is different
I can relate to OP feeling a bit down when they see a site using a hat in a minigame ostensibly glorifying an ideology which has killed millions of their brethren not that long ago

Maybe in 20 years, 90% of the world population will be vegetarian then it will be the other way around...

@ShadowThePrincessWizard It's slowly getting there :P

9:19 AM
But until then... yeah, something that kinda looks like a stereotypical furry russian hat with a star on it... might upset some people.

@ShadowThePrincessWizard If an user put racist stuff in their profile, I expect the company to remove it. If an user has a plate of salami for their avatar... it seems less reasonable to remove it because someone is vegan.

@Hitodama only because not enough people are upset with the salami.
It's all about numbers.

if you say so...

I now say....

@ShadowThePrincessWizard brews a cup of Affogato for @ShadowThePrincessWizard

hmm.... maybe I'll be back to Shadow The Coffee Wizard? It's pretty neutral...

JAD
@ShadowThePrincessWizard it is, and right now this is how the numbers are right now. Are we supposed to do things one way or another because in ten years an entire different group will be offended?

@JAD of course not
I only said the two things can be compared.
(bacon and USSR as winter bash SE hats)

@Magisch At least you got a thank you :P

@ShadowThePrincessWizard I believe that should be reflected in an answer to that (newer) question

@Tinkeringbell your edit seems to have turned the voting balance around, too

9:34 AM
Yeah... I at least reversed mine, as it was given for 'not helpful' due to the tone.. and I fixed that XD

Seems that red parrots sound softer :-D

all parrots are soft. After all, they are birds with feathers

@πάνταῥεῖ Hey, I'm a big softie sometimes. You just never show weakness on the internet, that's like lions seeing wounded prey ;)

@Magisch But they come with a dangerous spout ;)

beak.
spouts are for teapots :P

9:40 AM
@Tinkeringbell Oops, I probably meant pecker

spending too much time on the internet will cause you to be on edge, to never show vulnerability and to close off in a certain way

@Magisch I'm sure that exceeds the character limit ;)

@Magisch Which metal flair are you thinking of?

@Mithical your daily picture? Awesome! Bit dark though.
:P

@ShadowThePrincessWizard No... that's the abyss. Staring back. ;)

9:47 AM
I see tongue out
Rude cat! :D

Was there an announcement of the change?

Q: What happened to the on-hold state of a closed post?

JdrupalIt seems like closed questions are now shown as [closed] instead of [on-hold]. Is this by design or a bug? Here's an example from Drupal Answers: This question was closed 1 hour ago, but it already shows as [closed]. Usually it would be [on-hold] for a while before being closed.

@πάνταῥεῖ yes, see in comments.
It's part of major revamp of the post notices.

I guessed so. Wasn't sure. Voted as dupe.

Actually it was wrong, the original announcement didn't explain. Only the newer one have it.
(under Where did the "On Hold" label go?)

@πάνταῥεῖ this question is not about StackOverflow. It is about StackExchange overall, as intended by the description of the stack-overflow tag. The fact that this page is on SO domain does not automatically make it about SO. — Anton Menshov 2 mins ago
Is it?

Seems good enough here to me if the contests site is also used for other (non-so) contests...
It seems arqade may have things there too? And winter bash is on it too.

M'kay will retract my cv

Thanks :)
It's... looking like an old and unused site though.
Thanks everyone for your feedback. This hat will be retired after the current WB. — Yaakov Ellis ♦ 7 mins ago
No more warm welcome, it seems ;)

JAD
10:28 AM
hmm, everything turned out better than expected :)

Looked like stupid nonsense complainery at first, but they kinda have a point.
It fits nicely onto the Monica badge, though.

I personally really like my sporting wizard hat

@Tinkeringbell they haven't had proper contests in years :/

it fits the perspective of my avatar perfectly
I just remembered I'm still missing the swag from the stuff-a-way in the end of 2018 :D
I can bring it up every year like a yule log of online trivia

@JourneymanGeek I won a watch, a cheese board, and a box of swag last year... seems proper enough to me :P
@Magisch It does look good on you :)
It's not red enough though :P

JAD
10:35 AM
I'm not sure they're really the same contests

@Tinkeringbell i got just the watch
but I'm still regularly wearing it

I must admit I packed the cheese board away for use in my new apartment ;)
I do wear the watch though.
And I already used up the notebooks and water bottle that were in the swag package ;)
Lost the pen, I'm afraid.

heresy!

I know!

@Tinkeringbell how do you use up a water bottle?

10:38 AM
@rene Use it until it's time is up? :P
Broke it, but that sounds so heretic too :P

my water bottle is currently one of my iced tea bottles
it's an array of plastic bottles which I regularly fill with mint tea which is then left to cool down and subsequently refrigerated, for maximum mint tea consumption

Oooh... Nice!
I have a big tupperware one for work, and another SO one for on my desk at home. The one I got last year had one of those collapsible straws, and I managed to drop it and have the straw break off.

@Tinkeringbell So they're using China crap to send out swag?

@πάνταῥεῖ Nah... probably just me being clumsy ;) I'd manage to break it even if it was produced locally ;)

10:48 AM
that's why I want to become an astronaut, so I can drop things without breaking it ...

@Tinkeringbell my son kept breaking his bottles, so I bought him one from aluminum

I've seen too many horror movies to want to become an Astronaut :) In space, nobody can hear you scream and all that.

@ShadowThePrincessWizard Now it's only dented beyond recognition? :P

I think aluminum is better for you anyway, no plastic particles in your water.

Meh. You gotta go some way or other.
Maybe aluminum does give of particles too.

10:56 AM
everything these days is bad for you

@Tinkeringbell It does, especially with some acids.

if you research enough you'll find only despair at all the factors you can't mitigate
for instance many people say using deodorant with aluminum salts is bad for you
but no other deodorant works nearly as well

@Magisch Think about the Brezen

@Magisch that's pretty much been debunked

@Tinkeringbell I won an SSD 🤣
But I mean site promo contests
@Tinkeringbell my sippy cup #1 broke. #2 hasn't been used
Nalgene is bulletproof tho.

11:03 AM
@JourneymanGeek I must've dropped that thick plastic one a hundred times and it's still perfectly fine
The sippy one cracked, though. I think a sibling knocked it over.

@Tinkeringbell not yet... he love the new bottle so much that he keeps it safe.... for now. ;)

@Tinkeringbell *grumble* my watch got "adopted"

@Mithical by brother?

by someone who broke their watch and "borrowed" my spare

:(
!!/blame watch

11:06 AM
@ShadowThePrincessWizard It's user400654's fault.

I mean... I know exactly where it is, but they still haven't gotten themselves a watch yet

11:22 AM
@Mithical my sippy one had the lid split in 2 🤣
I grow a plant in it

Mine had the bottom just crack and part of it fall off

@motosubatsu Thats good news because the one deodorant I've been able to find that works for me to effectively eliminate body odor and doesn't irritate my skin is aluminum salt based
all others either don't work or give me hives

@Magisch always happy to help.. IIRC the whole thing came from some initial lab experiments in petri dishes that never actually panned out in to the real world.

@motosubatsu I was gonna keep using it anyways tbh. A bottle of this costs like 2.49€ and it lasts for 2-3 months. And it just utterly cleans up BO, where I've previously had a lot of issues with not getting rid of it and had to drown myself in scent. This deodorant has no scent at all.

11:38 AM
@Magisch yup.. it's really, really effective

11:55 AM
Tradition here is to only blatant off topic questions.
For the rest, there's the review queue. :)

M'key
@ShadowThePrincessWizard You meant or is something different?

lol meant cv
Anyway, question edited, no longer unclear

change detection still seems to be broken in the PNP spfx template. If something as simple as this fail, I can not see how this can be used at all.

status-needz-moar-AJAX

I am talking about something as simple as
> {{foo}}

<input type="text" [(ngModel)]="foo"/>
change the value in the input, the interpolated "label" in the curly braces does not change
and obviously, it is only on Edge when run in the SharePoint workbench.

12:12 PM
@motosubatsu still plenty of people online claiming it causes cancer or alzheimers or both

@Magisch heh, My dog's on aluminum oxide for his kidneys ._.
@Magisch people online claim a lot of things

someone tried to convince me online once that the chlorine used to treat water against bacteria is responsible for type 2 diabetes

._.
that stuff evaporates

meta.stackexchange.com/q/340530/369802 < Would a question that's asked because 'doing research' be a good one for MSE?
Have we had those before?
Did they go over well?

I actually suspect that would be a textbook discussion question
Needs polish of course

12:21 PM
I voted to reopen I think it is a valid topic of discussion on MSE

:)
I do hope it'll be polished before reopened entirely!
I specifically would like to know if they're looking for SO users only, because then we might better migrate it to MSO?

I can think of situations where we discussed an issue off siteand the answer would have been nearly impossible otherwise if I hadn't known the user 😁

How does the edit look?
@JourneymanGeek Oh, IPS has some discussion of 'if we know from one question the user is on the spectrum, is it okay to write an answer to another question using this info'
We also had a bunch of questions that were basically follow-ups/all related to a bunch of roommates and problems with that, and users wanted to know if they could use the entire context to write bigger/broader answers ...

of course it matters, especially on the more subjective or socially based stacks
I know of several examples on TWP where remembering a prior question I answered or commented on was vital to being able to form a good answer, and ultimately what pushed me to answer

I do wonder if that's what's meant with 'knowing the user' though... they do talk about answering a lot of their other questions or even 'real-life-knowing-each-other'.

Rob
12:39 PM
@Tinkeringbell Not good. It's good for the title to summarize the body (most of the time, when done reasonably). You've taken a title that describes the question and made it indistinguishable from our "Why do you stay?", etc. styled questions. I understand that people can click through and read the whole question and see what it's about, but the title accomplished that before your edit. Since you asked: it harms readability and should be reverted;
and it was an unnecessary bump.

@Rob But the body looks better?
Then I'm halfway happy, I do admit I'm not great at writing titles. The comment by OP suggested it was about more than just knowing people so I edited accordingly.

@Magisch there's also plenty of people on the internet claiming that the Earth is flat, that vaccines cause autism and other equally dumb things

Rob
Ehh, true they did comment about that; does it matter if they are doing research or their mum asked them. They also said to email them the answer. --- The person says stuff, but does it help ... [The additional information doesn't keep the question open, and IMNSHO it doesn't make me want to reopen it.] So, not really.

@motosubatsu indeed, but prior to today I'd given the aluminum salts thing a bit more credibility because I heard a lot of otherwise reasonable people talking about it and was cited at a study or two (which I didn't read tbh)

@Rob So, you think it's still too primarily opinion based/off-topic?
We discussed it a bit above and people seemed content with having it...

12:51 PM
I think it is answerable as I started on an answer. Not going to top LriO so I left it at that.

Rob
You asked about the edit, on or off topic is a new question.
The Review History says:
Post Closed as "Opinion-based" by πάντα ῥεῖ, GhostCat says Reinstate Monica, Luuklag, PeterJ, Jenayah
and now it says:

@Rob Hmm. Well, I do think it's nice to know I'd be answering a question because someone is doing research or just curious or wanting to know if they could do that... It might influence how I answer it!

Rob
Post Reopened by Lightness Races with Monica, rene, Mari-Lou A, Magisch, PeterJ
But nothing has changed.

True... though the closure as opinion based probably also had two votes in the mix for 'too broad', lemme check.
Two for more focus, two for more clarity, two for POB (looks like one of the more focus ones was retracted)
In my timeline. The last one was for primarily opinion based..
This is weird.

Rob
What if they said they were a kind and happy person, that they gave to charity, and always told the tooth. (sic) --- Then would your become a disciple?

12:56 PM
@Magisch yeah there were some janky studies done a while back - as is de rigour they got picked up by some media outlets (as well as some of the cranks) and got turned into "OMG Aluminium-containing anti-perspirants cause breast cancer!!!"

@Rob Hmmm?

Rob
@Tinkeringbell They are hatting.

@Magisch There was an American study several decades ago that linked aluminium to Alzheimer's. They found abnormally high levels of aluminum in brain tissue samples from people who'd had Alzheimer's. But no other studies were able to replicate the results. Eventually, it was discovered that water involved in preparing the tissue samples had high levels of aluminium. Sorry, I can't be bothered looking for references right now, but IIRC the faulty study was done in Georgia.

@Rob Still. It looks like you haven't cast a close-vote yet. So either the question was good enough as is, needs more improving (then probably ask OP in here, hi @sepideh ) or in a comment on the question... Or it needs closing again. All of those you can do too.

Rob
I did cast "leave closed", after your edit.
