Yikes! New contributor!!?!?!
also, morning...
so... yeah.... first review after waking up:

2:17 AM
erm. Burn with fire?

Done :)
Okay... now I just see "[username] is a new contributor" on the answer box, and it's, honestly... distracting :(
and I now can see and agree the confusion for linking to CoC :/

2:42 AM
@Somewhat you should feed this back on meta
@Dukeling you should feedback these things on the specific meta posts ;p
If you're unhappy about changes - let folks know why politely. Shutting up does no good.

@JourneymanGeek I'm almost always late to the meta party (read: these have been covered already in some of the answers of that meta post ;)

3:33 AM
pity!
lol
I totally expect that to happen

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog It was already disputed.
Within six minutes of you marking it "looks OK" it was handled.

@Catija A few minutes after I posted that message, someone else made another "Looks OK" review, which dismissed the flag.
(message conflict)
@Catija Could you please use your mod powers to delete the above linked off-topic question?

Right... my point is, give the community a chance to fix it.

4:26 AM
edited into a real site-recommendation Where do I ask a question that is about law and is biblical [on hold] - Abhijit Bagchi‎ - 2018-08-22 01:36:33Z

@rene Too bad, I already reviewed it as "Leave Closed" before it was edited again. Oh, well, cast a reopen vote externally.

yeah, it is a new contributor, I think that warrants my edit and re-open attempt. ..

5:14 AM
@rene the "biblical" bit still confounds me a bit

yes, I agree.

@JourneymanGeek The biblical law is sort of irrelevant... a bit of a red herring... whether it's morally wrong by the bible doesn't impact the final answer of whether it's illegal by English law.
If it's illegal by English law (which I don't think it is), it could be causally related to the biblical laws but it doesn't matter. Governments more and more aren't bound by religious texts.

Edited further, then added my reopen vote

Let's all agree on general confusion and move on ...

Kinda split up the biblical and legal contexts of the question, and dumped the original wording totally. Hopefully it matches OP's intent but I was too lazy to use aibobot for a suggested edit.

5:21 AM
Ugh, it's way too late to be this confused ;) Have a good day, y'all.

Sleep well !
Ok, let's party, no one is watching ....

5:33 AM
The prime is watching. Everything

2 hours later…
7:56 AM
Did something change on MSE or is it just my monitor? I can barely distinguish posts which have been deleted. The "red" color is very close to the white

@Bart Is it just MSE?

lemme check
Nah, it's just this #f4eaea which is very close to white for me. Same deal on SO.

@Bart I would blame your monitor. It's just the usual red to me.

Guess so. Just get confused whenever you guys ask me to delete something. :D

8:48 AM
^ this worries me a little....

Thats a nice kitten though
I kind of want to cuddle it

Google AI is so advanced now it even detect ghosts.

More likely it's pareidolia

and here the owl comes again, with his science buzzwords, to kill out our fun ;_;

owl be right back

8:55 AM
@Derpy what... is this?
@Tinkeringbell nope, I also notice a change, they made the red lighter. /cc @Bart
Might be A/B testing...
Maybe they think that when a new user will see their own deleted post, having it less red will cause less grief.

@ShadowWizard Is it on the new themed sites then? I'm going to take another look. IPS still looks red to me, as does the color code Bart sent

@Tinkeringbell dunno, checked MSE only. No rep on themed sites.

If it's just bull-sight problem, make it grey rather than red

It's not red a bit, it's light pink now.

That's the color google gives me for the code Bart sent

9:01 AM
Yup

And that's the difference between white and red on IPS. It's not lighter?

@JohnDvorak or blue with flowers floating over it.
So that the new users will feel happier.
@Tinkeringbell appears to be the same.
Very hard to distinguish.

@ShadowWizard Yeah, but it's the usual color?

@Tinkeringbell not sure now.... maybe it just appears different because @Bart said. ;)
Heroku cloud meta.stackexchange.com/questions/314502/… @Bart @rene @JourneymanGeek @TravisJ

@ShadowWizard that's only until they learn the flowers refer to Rene.

9:07 AM
@JohnDvorak who is Rene?
I know only @rene... ;)
At least @rene is cool about it, unlike balpha who gets mad whenever being called Balpha.... :D
Sep 13 '17 at 18:43, by balpha
Now, people uppercasing the "b", I'll never get used to.
hehe
> In real life, I'm commonly known as Ben; online, I usually go by the handle of balpha. This goes back to a story from school, where a teacher enumerated the three Benjamins in class using greek letters. I was the first (naturally), hence “Ben alpha”.
So @balpha are you still in touch with Ben Beta and Ben Gamma? ;)

not so good compared to other samples

@ShadowWizard nope :)

anyway, on an unrelated note, Akinator doesn't know about Skeet
maybe I should try with shog

@balpha oh... too bad... could be really cool. "Ben Club" could also be a thing. :D
I was part of Facebook group dedicated only for people called "Yahav" in their real life, but the group didn't really have any activity. :/
There was some non-Israeli woman who somehow found me and added me, lol

And now you're married?

9:24 AM
@Derpy not so good, period.
I mean... @rene being a cat... lol
Guess that project won't really launch any time soon.

@ShadowWizard It matches? Both are illegible :P

@Bart yes, but not to that woman. ;)

@ShadowWizard plot twist: @rene has secretly been @bjb all along.

I've tried my lovely owl face, and cartoonify came up with ... a white rectangle

9:26 AM
hehehe
Maybe it sense your emptiness.

@JohnDvorak :( I'm not worthy of cartoonification either :(

I don't think I want to know what's going on there...

@Tinkeringbell hey that's rather nice!
At least it detected you're a bird!

@ShadowWizard I thought that was an airplane (tail on the right :P )

9:30 AM
@Tinkeringbell nah it's a bird as kids draw it

Hey, that's pretty accurate

the deep dream generator is on a whole different level.

@ShadowWizard but why is it facing the wrong way?

Got a white square too

@Derpy better level? Well, looks like that deep dream generator is both more mature, and has whole team working on it, while that cartoonification project is done by a single person.
@Tinkeringbell I think it doesn't really draw anything, just taking existing images and scramble them together.

9:33 AM
@ShadowWizard well, google deep dream made this one.

From a cartoon? Nice

@Derpy yeah looks very nice!

Deep Dream could actually provide great results when asked to colorize cartoons

@JohnDvorak nope, it was the deep style feature
original photo:

oh?

9:35 AM
I applied this as a style to copy:
the cat was turned in a sumi-e style painting

I thought Deep Dream could only highlight pareidolia opportunities

nope, they added some more features "recently"

@ShadowWizard Oh right. That's what that quickdraw dataset is about :P

Probably...

I really have to get into all this deep learning and machine learning stuff at some point. If you look at how many conference papers were about that at a recent graphics conference. It's insane.

9:38 AM
@Bart Just get a machine to learn it for you :)

Haha, I already suggested having a machine learn how to write papers for me so I can submit them to the conference next year

Been done

Yeah, although it wasn't terribly convincing.

10:33 AM
sad :(

I saw this new contributor post and felt compelled to be welcoming

@JohnDvorak hmm, that looks slightly like Caleb Hyles

ha ha, now all the spammers have the "new contributor" decoration on Stack Overflow

New contributor... new contributor everywhere..!

Does anybody here still uses the iOS-app and if so, can you confirm the version you have? I'm wondering about the correct tag here.

Pie > Apple

@rene The latest question stated 1.6.6.2
ok, nvm. I think I know what you're trying to do and I misunderstood it... or not ._.

OK

11:12 AM
what is "OBE"?
I believe it's not Out-of-Body Experience...

Obsolete By Extension

oh...

@Somewhat Overtaken By Events

Obviated by Eons
Outlawed by Evangelists

New user indicator is getting a lot of heat

hides a can of gasoline, whistles overtly

^ guys, be nice please. It's a new contributor.

done ...

The thing was just implemented today and it's already old

11:31 AM
I'm very nice, confirming the spam post as spam by flagging it as spam.

/me sings "spam spam spam spam"

I'd rather listen to Dries Roelvink ....

@rene Toppers? Or is that too much of a stretch?

Both of you deserve to be banned just for mentioning those names

@Bart Oooh. I know much worse :P

11:38 AM
Shush

@Tinkeringbell will work as well.

I think it's time to link this again :P

I haven't opened any HNQ since "New user" contributor...

@Somewhat That's an ... interesting? side effect?

Can we ban @Tinkeringbell please? They're unwelcoming to any users.

11:39 AM
Because you don't want to be tempted to participate on a new site and get that badge?
@Bart This is basically singing welcome, welcome over and over :P And the other song, iirc is inviting everyone to join as well!

I usually only suggest an edit though, never answering

@Bart sapperdeflap

will "new user" indicator appear on never-posting user?

Where is my smiting stick? Time to use it again.

@Somewhat Hmmm. Since it's apparently tied to your first question/answer... I don't know if it shows up when you comment or edit
It doesn't seem to show on this page, for example: interpersonal.stackexchange.com/…
@Bart I'm not impressed

11:44 AM
(I just realized I used "new user", not "new contributor")

@Tinkeringbell Ouch

@Somewhat I understood ;) You can see the new users there, without the contributor thing :)

Welp, seems on SE, "contribution" is only for Q and A (escape from reality)

@rene ? What's ouch about a children's song?

I anticipated the smiting stick coming your way ...

11:46 AM
@rene Ohhh... Nope. I scared Bart away :P
Probably with the taste in music XD

Yes, I have to say, your taste is ... special ...

@rene I grew up with those songs! And my childhood was perfect :D

New headcanon: the open palm icon represents a slap in the face of those who thought Stack Exchange was about questions, not askers

@Tinkeringbell a bird of paradise, you might say

@Magisch Ohh... good. puns! I heard a great one lately. Sad it only works in Dutch though :P
puns are safer than music, I guess :P

12:32 PM
@JourneymanGeek I do, but experience has taught me that's not very effective. It works much better to just fix it on my end.

Bit concerning when the second reaction to an announced UI change is people figuring out how they can undo it

@Magisch What's the first? Just the general 'We hate it?'

aye

I dunno... I see a lot of 'I don't want to be labelled a new user, I've been here longer than today'... which is why I think the thing focuses on contributions, not users? I kinda like the visual on the actual question/answer, instead of in the first posts queue, so far...

1:04 PM
While I can kind of appreciate what SE is trying to do, the indicator seems... wasting vertical space :/
And that's why I posted this earlier...
10 hours ago, by Somewhat
user image

@Somewhat Put it next to the username? :P Facebook does that, and then you only find out why some people wave at you and some don't by hovering over the icon ;)

I wonder if I should already write an "accept-rate" like request to undo the new contributor tag :D

the emoji is not global, but that's a "beginner" mark in Japan

@Somewhat I could use one :D

1:19 PM
@Tinkeringbell yeah there are quite a few users who are years in Stack Exchange and labelled now "NEW" in MSE when they posted on the announcement of the NEW indicator, which is weird.

New to MSE?

Well... yes, but still... they also have MSE profile for years. Just didn't post before.
aka stalkers.

@ShadowWizard Well, I guess that's what the whole thing is about? Having a way to see first posts outside the first posts queue?

e.g. author of this answer.
MisterGeeky, Infopark Campus, Kochi, Kerala, India
244 1 5
> Member for 1 year, 3 months
Member of 36 communities in SE except MSE.
So "new" is... well... not really accurate.
waiting for "male/female user indicator"

@ShadowWizard Yeah okay. But still... 1 post, 11 votes casts, no edits... Meets my definition of a 'new contributor'

1:25 PM
waiting for "under 13/16 user indicator"

lol
@Tinkeringbell well the major issue is that SE shouldn't focus on those things. Same as it shouldn't focus on gender, color, profession, race, etc.
SE should focus on content. Period.
And now they are not.

@ShadowWizard Hmmm... what would be the use of that? :P New contributor says to me 'oh hey, new! Hi! Welcome, here's how we do stuff, please stick around!'... Female says to me 'careful, may be on a period and grumpy'? :P

@ShadowWizard the problem is that, well, a lot of people seem to think SE should

actually, waiting for "SE mobile app user indicator"

@Tinkeringbell now now. Men can be grumpy too. And we have no excuse ;p

1:27 PM
@ShadowWizard So the indicator should be on the content, not the one posting the content?

because those users need more guidance than browser user

I can live with that.

@Tinkeringbell something like that... :D

@Somewhat Just do the 'posted from my iphone' underneath a post :P

@Tinkeringbell in a sense I think our new user indoctrination induction should be focused more on content than people...
I love stuff like the new user wizard for example
well I will when its a thing ;p

1:29 PM
@JourneymanGeek Sure. But I don't mind pointing out that content may be the first time someone actually put content on there, and actively reminding people not to be grumpy? I think once everyone is used to the icon, no one is going to notice and things will be back to normal soon :P

@Tinkeringbell Maybe

@Tinkeringbell no indicator.. at least not one which isn't related to content.

@ShadowWizard it will be moot soon
the app is slowly mouldering like last year's cheese

you mean cheese from 6-8 years ago, yeah...

@ShadowWizard So? A 'first contribution' indicator on the content (not the queue)... is related to the content in my mind...

1:33 PM
@Tinkeringbell I guess my big arguement against it is there's two or three mechanisms that do the same thing
First post reviews, and reputation counts

That's... a "First Post" queue, when even their second/third/etc. post could go there if the previous is deleted....

@JourneymanGeek Apparently, they haven't been sufficient?

@Tinkeringbell why might be a good question to ask. Review queues have been one of those things that's been a constant work in progress

I could agree "First Post" and "Late Answer" queues aren't really sufficient because they only need 1 reviewer to get them off from the queue...

@Somewhat That's kinda what I like about the whole indicator (whether on the post or user)... it gives EVERYONE a reminder, not just the one in the first posts queue. And it's way more visible (annoyingly? :P ) than rep or badges or even edits/votes

1:38 PM
I'm actually okay with it (most traditional forums do that, I believe, with "predefined title" based on posts count)... only the cosmetic part.

@rene actually, see his profile

Seeing a 1-rep user without a cartoon hand is pretty damning... "hey everyone, this answerer is currently suspended. Not a noob. Suspended."

2:24 PM
@JohnDvorak Ehhh... but that was always the case? I mean, you could see the age of the post, the votes, and the 1 rep :P
I often realize people are suspended after first wondering for 30 minutes how they managed to lose the rep from an upvoted post :P

Yeah, but it's even more striking now.

user194636
Perhaps the avatar could get a pair of suspenders overlaid to make it more obvious

or a noose

user194636
the power of iterative development

This feels like accept-rate all over again

2:42 PM
@JourneymanGeek okay
@Bart like Please make that silly hand go-away! Get some rep will you!?

2:56 PM
someone decided it was a good idea to park the "disco bus" in front of my house ...

@rene not even that necessarily. Just some in your face marker which has good intentions but will trigger some to be less than welcoming.

3:10 PM
it is nice to see how the square-enix store faqs lacks the most important information about preorders.
WHEN the product is actually billed

Don't pre-order games ... ever. Stop that

Dear collaborator, we thank your for your suggestion. It has been forwarded to the document shredder as per office policies.

Regards,
Ponyville mail department
but you know, jokes asides, again with the no-preorder thing? I though I left that on Arqade - and its chatroom, which I avoid on purpose - alongside with the "pc master race" comments

Haha, I primarily game on PC, but developed for mostly mobile VR and would have loved to develop for Switch. So that's not something I care about. Game on whatever you like

3:29 PM
so, just for fun, what would be the no-preorder reasons this time?
because, you know, someone once tried to tell me that I shouldn't have preorder Project Diva: Future Tone DX because the game could have been bad and I couldn't have know at the time....

i mean...
that's true of non-prerelease/preorder games too.

You're free to do whatever you want. If there's a good discount and you really want the title, go ahead. It just irks me that there is hardly a physical need any more for preorders. It's a mere AAA quick cash grab in an attempt to please shareholders. Anyway, some stuff there that annoys me, some of it I can't talk about. But do whatever you want. Don't listen to the grumpy guy behind the glasses.

Sorry, I guess that I should have explained it a little more.
The funny part about that is that Project Diva is a game that originally released only digitally.
about... TWO years later they had a physical release just for "fans". Very limited quantity.
so basically:
a) it is a rhythm game,
b) that I already tried
c) that has about **300** songs.
Vocaloid songs I should add, and since I do listen to those... you would probably understand that any "wait to see the game" rant didn't really make any sense in that context.
The game was out and reviewable BEFORE the preorder.

so it was... an order.

Basically... same thing as the Undertale collector edition thing.
@FélixGagnon-Grenier it was a preorder because I had the order placed before the physical edition was released. But I was fully aware that its content was the same as the digital version + some bonuses.
As I said, same as Undertale.
I knew the game, and I knew I was going to get an additional heart locket replica

3:49 PM
I don't preorder simply because i can get the game 40-50% off after 6 months anyway. why rush to get it immediately, it'll still be there in 6 months, or it won't and it wasn't worth buying anyway.

@KevinB that's typically what I do ;p
also if I liked a game I rarely buy the sequel immediately

Is there any other reasonable guidance we can offer this user to make them post questions that are on-topic and useful on MSE.
I now more feel like a dispatcher

uhh... outside of Q-banning him on MSE?

@rene I think the current approach of closing those questions as needed unless adviced otherwise by TPTB seems prudent?

4:17 PM
OK
Seeing now that Shog9 deleted it I'm wondering if I was welcoming and nice enough.

4:54 PM
I always delete blatantly off-topic questions on meta
there's very little to be gained by leaving them visible

@Shog9 Agree on that but I saw Tim answering a question from that same OP so I assumed that set some benchmark which I tried to reach. I'm not questioning your deletion, I'm wondering if my comment was helpful / inline with what is expected when we encounter a new contributor. If you assume I'm over confident of myself, then that assumption is wrong.

I either didn't read or don't remember your comment
I expect that the question Tim answered was actually on-topic for MSE

well, I didn't even try to comment on the question he answered but I take it if we conclude he is the Director of Communication and we're not. We have a lot to learn.

5:32 PM
let's... leave that stuff to Twitter.

5:47 PM
Can anyone else check if I hammered this incorrectly? I think the answer from Nicael answers the question. But in the end the why can I only accept one answer is answered by because it is by design?
@sha or @Bart maybe for a second opinion ^

@rene I think you used your Chaos Emeralds correctly there. However, I think you should add meta.stackexchange.com/questions/308860/… to the duplicate list

6:11 PM
@Shog9 Still composing your answer?

6:28 PM
@rene meta.stackexchange.com/q/152142/377214 as duplicate of meta.stackexchange.com/q/303105 and please remove the other proposed question from the duplicate list
^^Engaged in a brief comment thread with that user; they were just in the wrong place.
First, if the rationale is that ?noredirect=1 shouldn't work if you'd see a 404 page, why does it work for deleted migration stubs? Second, the only reason one would go to a URL with that parameter is if they want to access the page for some other technical reason; I don't see a reason why adding it should continue to redirect, as it contradicts the expected behavior. — Sonic the Inclusive Hedgehog 23 mins ago
@Shog9 Still waiting for a response.

6:59 PM
ok, knock that off
I already get an inbox message when you comment on one of my posts; you don't need to ping me again here to add a second inbox message asking me to read the first one.

8:02 PM
@Shog9 Sorry, was a little impatient.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog not a little ...

... wait there's the new contributor spam in the answer box as well

it is everywhere

... I'm jealous, I too would have liked some neon all over me

@rene not a dupe IMO. It is asking why without suggesting to change this behavior. "This is by design" is not valid answer either, whole point is the reasoning behind this behavior. Valid question and if I will have time might throw answer.

8:10 PM
Ok, fair enough.
Let me re-open then.

Already reopened. ;)

OK
do you need anything from my comments?
otherwise I clean up

@FélixGagnon-Grenier start new account. Profit. ;-)

heh, I actually have never done that, and it seems that lots of people spin new accounts. might try it some day, but I'm somewhat afraid my activity would appear strange...

@rene didn't read them yet, just the question's current revision and the other questions. Let me see...

8:13 PM
Ok, take your time

@rene well most can be safely removed, except this one:
Because ultimately the SE design philosophy is that a single question has a single best answer. And I think awarding excellent answers is a perfect reason for a bounty. And I don't understand the "winner takes it all" remark. Is that still about content of posts? — rene 3 hours ago
This can become an answer, with some polish.
@FélixGagnon-Grenier try it. Fun is almost guaranteed. :D

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog try to understand that no response is also kind of response.

@Shog9 Could you please clear the comments on meta.stackexchange.com/q/314515/377214?

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog Why? and just flag the post, someone from staff will handle it. That doesn't need a CM

8:22 PM
@rene Flags on MSE take a very long time to be handled, and employees review them anyway.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog But you haven't actually flagged them and Shog isn't the only person who might handle said flags. By only pinging him, you're singling him out for work that someone else could do should they look at the flag queue.

waffles

I only take waffles on rabbits nowadays
also, I need to understand what's the big waffle vs pancake thing
