I use it to defrost our fridge quickly

Your fridge needs to be defrosted?

Our old one had a good half inch of ice at the bottom
I think I was having a bad day and decided to do something about it....

Freezer?
May be a pedantic American thing, my tendency is to call the part we keep between 32 and 40 F the "fridge" and the part kept below 20F "freezer" specifically... so a fridge having ice in it would be odd.

Ya. Freezer part of the fridge :p
I was referring to the machine as a whole

Ah.

12:39 AM
defrosting my ancient deepfreeze was my project yesterday.
Got smart about it for once and picked up 10lbs of dry ice to pack on top of the coolers full of food
...then had to resist the urge to make bottle bombs with the leftovers

That sounds impossible

A dry ice bomb is a simple explosive device. While its simplicity, ease of construction, high bursting pressure and sound make it appealing for recreational purposes, it can be unpredictable and dangerous, and it has led to many injuries. Dry ice bombs are illegal in many jurisdictions. == Overview == Dry ice bombs are commonly made from a container such as a plastic bottle, water and dry ice. The bottle is filled about one quarter full of water. Chunks of dry ice are added and the container is shut tightly. As the solid carbon dioxide warms, it sublimates to gas. With limited room for the gas...
As cool as that looks (har) I do have some respect for the neighbors, particularly the ones trying to sell their house right now

1:38 AM
@Shog9 for what it's worth for you and the mods, I'm sorry you had to deal with Tobiq, and @AaronHall thank for you the 24 hour reprieve.

not a problem for me, looks like quite a bit for the SO mods

@Shog9 . . . That's horrifying.

dry ice bombs were fun experiments in high school chemistry until the country started using them maliciously
now they're jail worthy

@Shog9 Oh, see... that's what @Undo needs today.

...wow

1:53 AM
He was the one complaining about not having any explosions.

/me 's head asplode.

If you do experiment be safe, they can literally take fingers/hands off if the plastic bottle or container is more solid

not to mention fast frostbite

Warning: Do not look into laser with remaining eye.

also yes
I think in my hometown kids would put them in mailboxes before people opened them and a lot of people got hurt. It was pretty bad

1:56 AM
... Eeesh, that sounds dangerous.

Extremely :(

yeah... kids used to do that with foil & bleach

People who need their fingers probably shouldn't play with explosives.

I never heard that one -- I assume bleach reacts with aluminum?

Bleach does react with ammonia. Don't do that. Seriously, don't.

1:57 AM
That one was commonly taught in our schools

Foil and bleach? Maybe I should be glad I'm not coloring my hair any more.

@SterlingArcher yeah. Kids are dumb.

I was horrible at chemistry. I set off the emergency shower 3 times, once by accident

@Catija only if you colored your hair in a ... wait, bleach?

1:58 AM
How do you think you make dark brown hair blonde?

oh, right, h2o2

The worst was when I ripped my glove, and my hand touched this compound that just sucked moisture out of anything

well, shoot, you can have a lot more fun with that

I remember the delightfully demented safety video we would have to watch every so often. Don't snap someone else's goggles (demo)!

Isn't hydrogen peroxide used as rocket fuel sometimes?

1:59 AM
panicked, spilled the rest all over my shirt. teacher threw me under the chemical shower

@HDE226868 The first result Google gives me is from Quora, so I guess we'll never know. :P

it's an oxidizer, but used at much higher concentrations

Well hydrogen peroxide is also an over-the-counter antiseptic.

Apparently it's this stuff: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-test_peroxide

@Catija That was such a harsh burn it could have come from . . . at least one of these explosives.

A: Cleaning a round-bottom flask, especially after distillation

Ben Norris@Permeakra suggests some good cleaning solutions. I have rearranged them (adding a few) in a suggested order from mildest to most evil. The specific thing you want to use will vary based on what you want to clean. If an initial rinse isn't good enough, you may want to let it soak for a few hours....

More good fun

@Catija Ooh, monopropellants are interesting.

2:49 AM
@Catija I can see you're participating in the internal chat rooms...

slightly creepy

@Shog9 The fact that one has talked in a private chat room is publicly visible

so's your house; still, greeting someone with "I see that you're home" might be... off-putting
just FYI

@Shog9 Just a joke
In that case, why not make the "last talked" only show the last time one has talked in a non-private chat room?

@HDE226868 as an oxidiser IIRC
not as a fuel

2:53 AM
(public or gallery) @Shog9

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog I still kinda feel like you're missing the point.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog cause most people are not going to go "hey, you talked in the secret room"
or even care. Or point out
and some folks may choose to spend time on public rather than private rooms.

Again, imagine your phone is ringing. You answer it, and I exclaim in your ear, "hey Sonic, I see that you just walked into your kitchen!"
Possible solutions:
- Turn all the lights off in your house
- Buy blackout curtains
- Move to an undisclosed location
- Tell Shog to be slightly less creepy

I am disappointed. No Foil? ;p

fine.
- Put your phone in the microwave

2:56 AM
Also, I totally want blackout curtains.

@JourneymanGeek Mostly, but it can be used as a monopropellant - acting as fuel and oxidizer. But it's been a while since my aerospace geek phase, so I could be misremembering.

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog There's a huge difference between the info being available and you commenting on it. And, I'll go so far as, when coupled with some of the personal questions/remarks you make in here, it makes me somewhat uncomfortable. I know that I'm not as private about my life as some people are... and I appreciate that you're interested in being friendly with me...

@HDE226868 with a catalist.... maybe?

@JourneymanGeek Dunno. Sounds like I have some reading in my future.

Blackout curtains are great, except when they throw your sleep schedule off and you somehow sleep until 2PM

2:57 AM
@Shog9 I have no sleep shedule. I work shifts
and tbh having my room dark as night at midday has a certain appeal...

that's gotta suck
I did that for a short while

Also popular in extreme latitudes.

never felt completely awake

Its a job, and it pays money ;)

yeah, that's why I did it too. Still, I missed feeling awake.

2:58 AM
and hopefully puts me in a place where I can find something with saner hours or at least more interesting work.
@Shog9 and ... normal weekends.

@Catija I understand. Note that while I always prefaced such questions with "if I may ask" or "out of curiosity" to better indicate that you don't have to answer if you're not comfortable, I now understand that you chose to answer such questions because you went out of your way to be polite. I'll be sure to keep such questions down in the future. Thanks for letting me know your feelings.

Also, there's something horribly wrong with waking up rested, turning on all the lights to give yourself a sense of morning, drinking some coffee... And then leaving your house and suddenly feeling dead tired because it's cold and black outside and your body is convinced it's time for bed again.

lol
The worst part is.... almost dozing off at 4am...

Falling asleep while driving just as the sun comes up is... such a weird feeling

and suddenly all the alerts go off.
ahh
I sleep on the train
then come home and sleeep some more.
Then have lunch. Then sleep a few more hours.

3:03 AM
I've never gotten the hang of sleeping on a train, sometimes because I constantly remember I'm traveling uncomfortably fast on a narrow track and have no control over my speed. I wish I could; the Northeast Corridor isn't the most scenic route to take.

oh local metro trains
and I'm tired enough I could probably sleep on a bed of broken glass

I used to travel on Indian sleeper trains. I'd never get to sleep on them, partly due to the train's motion and partly because of jetlag

I love sleeping on trains. And planes. And in cars, if the driver can keep a relatively constant velocity
...that last one is only an issue if I'm the driver...

Sleeping on planes in a cramped seat without bothering your fellow seatmates is a learned skill.

oh these are metro trains
sideway seats, and its from the first station so I basically find a quiet corner

3:09 AM
@JourneymanGeek Has there ever been a time when you missed your station because you were dozed off when the train arrived?

@JourneymanGeek Commuter rail or subways?

subway
@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog oddly no

In my childhood, Air India used to operate a 747 route between Los Angeles and Mumbai, which had relatively low load factors, so my parents could easily find a row of three empty seats and put me to sleep

@Shog9 under normal circumstances, I really prefer to sleep horizontally
So sleeping on trains sucks but, eh, if my body needs that extra hour of low quality sleep, it can have it ;)

@Catija I know. But the titles used are great
Btw I know there is such a service available but didn't knew the url until you posted here. ThAnkS

won't work

5:45 AM
Interesting, the preview breaks from the URL http://%EF%BF%BD%EF%BF%BD.la/%EF%BF%BD%EF%BF%BD

[test](javascript://hello%0Aalertworld)

in order to render it must start with http

btw, javascript doesn't use // to execute

https? is the patter

5:47 AM
http matches both https and http

@TravisJ that's a way to bypass xss filters
after javascript:, //hello is a comment. %0A is line break. So, alert will execute
fyi

doesn't execute in chrome

I thought the chat would've converted http://📙.la/👋 to http://xn--yt8h.la/%F0%9F%91%8B

@TravisJ when you copy paste in chrome, chrome remove the javascript://
just type it

Yes, I did. It doesn't execute.

5:50 AM
works fine for me
in the first message, I used ` to send variable to alert. That get converted to codeblock
try
javascript://hello%0Aalert('a')

Hm, worked on a different tab. Not sure why it didn't work at first.
It's possible I copied a unicode or something in there, typing it out worked.

@JennaSloan That was a security bug in chrome

That's an interesting approach. I haven't really seen anywhere with much xss vulnerability in a long time though.

nowadays it's hard to execute because of X-Xss-Protection and csp

My favorite was the image tag with an onerror javascript handler

5:54 AM
src=X onerror=alert

yeh

In some places, alert won't work but prompt/confirm may work

I mean, if it gets through the next step is spraying the heap :P
Only works in FF and IE though
chrome is too smart for that

Chrome update it's auditor each and every release. I guess it uses an AI algorithm
Facebook's linkshim uses an AI algorithm to detect and prevent open redirect. Once we bypassed, we can't do that again with same payload

Chrome is ridiculously safe.
Redirect isn't so much of an issue so much as capturing the window object of a new tab opening.
(chrome is still susceptible to this, and so is facebook)

6:00 AM
Google generally won't accept open redirect. But recently paid someone $7.5K for an open redirect
He found it in a desktop app of Google Chats. Since the app is built using electron, the address bar isn't visible. Redirecting to a phishing login page, it's easy to takeover google account
some sites consider tab-nabbing an issue.

In app nav is always a little creepy

yeah. In that case, open redirect matters
I am need of money, urgently. So, currently I'm hunting low hanging fruits

Are apps running chrome instances?
You mean, like at upwork.com?

@TravisJ electron apps use chrome to run

interesting

6:06 AM
@TravisJ no. On google domains. But for low priority bugs like csrf, logical issues, missing access control at server side, etc

And you submit that to google in a report and they pay you?

@TravisJ yes

That's kinda cool

They've the panel meeting today and my 3 reports are in the queue.

They recently updated their control panel for analytics, that might be a place to look

Q: How do I greet someone in a different timezone when my morning is his evening?

SumiI am in Nepal and my father is in America. When we talk with him it is our morning and his evening. Now how can I greet him and how can he greet me saying, where one would typically say 'good morning' or 'good evening'?

or even better:
> One of the major problems encountered in time travel is not that of accidentally becoming your own father or mother. There is no problem involved in becoming your own father or mother that a broadminded and well-adjusted family can't cope with. There is also no problem about changing the course of history- the course of history does not change because it all fits together like a jigsaw. All the important changes have happened before the things they were supposed to change and it all sorts itself out in the end.
and remember: Don't Panic

Time travel is one of those things that sounds nice until you think it through

and once again I'll have to quote...
> Things are a mess fer ya 'cause ya think time an' space are objective things. Y'now how time seems down when y're waiting? Fact is, time is simply a creation of your human consciousness. What is there ain't no human beings anywhere in the world? Wouldn't clocks and calendars be a waste?

Maybe there ain't no such thing as time that flows in one direction from the past to the future, and never was dontcha think, ma'am? Human beings are slipshod to begin with, so there ain't nothing strange 'bout time being slipshod too. If ev'rything was all hunky-dory then THAT'D be weird! The only certai

@TemaniAfif If you're talking about upvote/flag, it's intentional. They're now buttons and they're inheriting styles from the .s-btn class. It was one option to make them keyboard/screen reader accessible. — Brian Nickel ♦ Aug 17 at 20:48

@Somewhat Huh? Why?
Did I miss something? :P

the flag was misaligned since SE stripped leading whitespaces...
and this "man facepalming" emoji is offered by Windows 10, but not rendered correctly on Chrome -_-

@Somewhat Ohhh.. that's not a fail on your side ;) What does the women have to do with it?

What's been wrong with user400204 here that the account was nuked? A disclosed sock? Asked for deletion themselves?

@πάνταῥεῖ I suspect that's under NDA

Probably.I just wondered.

I'm also curious, actually

You've answered the question, yes.

Considering the OP comparing SO (and MSE) with the friendly (not really) Maths.SE and Tex.SE, I'd go for self-deletion...

I thought that took a week and required a CM nod?

> If you have never posted or voted more than once on your profile, your account will be immediately deleted. -- How can I delete my account?
I don't know the history of that account on MSE though, but if it's the only post, then immediate deletion

Oh, OK. Seems plausible then.

Hello together. Just a question: I wanted to ask a question if polaris and sigma octantis could be seen both at the same time (must be near the equator and equinox). I typed in the title in "Ask a question", found the exact duplicate question, left "Ask a question" and followed the link (It is faster this way to find duplicates). It was answered, so I upvoted and give a star to the question and upvoted the answer. I got +2 points which is nice, but why?
It's Astronomy.SE, by the way.

Can I see what your rep dropdown says?

To be honest, any actions you did wouldn't get you +2 rep. At least that's a fact.

@ThorstenS. You edited the post, and your suggestion was approved, giving you +2 rep.

Oh, I forgot that completely.
It was kind of automatic reaction.

This is, to be clear, NOT the "chat with a SO mod" room.
Also, blaming your favorite SO mod for whatever moderation actions you happen to have observed today is pretty low. There are 26 Stack Overflow mods and a heap of employees who also do some moderation on SO / chat.SO
The standard way of resolving this stuff is to raise it on meta.
If you want to chat here, be polite and recognize that most of us - probably including the moderator(s) you're pinging - have no earthly clue what you're talking about.
So clue us in before you start tossing out invectives
...and then, y'know... skip the invectives.

Are three separate tags (with a synonym locking), and really needed? Shouldn't they be synonymized?
This was brought up on a local meta (where we had a similar problem with choice of tags) but it is probably a reasonable question about tags on Meta Stack Exchange, too.

I think they are the same with the only difference that some question locks also locks the answers?
But this needs at least a mod to confirm and that is not me.

6:27 PM
@bwDraco A common sight in India
@rene Only for historical locks. For other types of locks, the only thing that happens to the answers is that suggested edits are prevented (but nothing else).
@rene You've got the anonymous editor :)
@Shog9 But it used to be (back in the pre-MSO-MSE-split days :)

@SonictheInclusiveHedgehog and that has its own tag, at least on MSE so that makes sense.
